W

IT IS HIGH TIME FOR MORE GREEN DISCLOSURES

ith global economies still signalling red, industries are buckling up for what looks like a tough year. Until now, we have succeeded in laying the foundations to restart tourism around the pillars of sustainability, innovation, and investing for a resilient future. Through it all, we have learned many lessons, the most important of which is fostering a collaborative and multilateral approach; we believe this must remain at the core of initiatives to promote better understanding and intersectional progress within the Industry, even as we all struggle to fight off global economic stagnation. As other industries also try to adopt a sustainable approach in their operations and market their efforts toward this, the very real threat of Greenwashing remains behind the scenes. Every industry faces this threat, none more so than the Tourism industry. For the uninitiated, Greenwashing is when businesses try to leverage the ever-expanding public attention on sustainable practices but fail to meet the pledged goal in any meaningful manner this type of deceptive marketing. A growing trend in investing has been using the principle of ESG, using environmental, social, and governance metrics as ways to assess potential investments. But the idea that you can make profits with purpose has recently come under pressure from governments, oversight entities, many large exposés from journalists, and even insiders spilling the beans.

Sustainable finance and tourism alike remain replete with Greenwash. Auditing firms and holding your own organizations accountable is one way to tackle this. Travel and tourism businesses may state to be environmentally friendly while not recycling, using sustainable practices, or helping local communities they operate in. Short-term profit is the main goal when companies undertake Greenwashing campaigns. In some cases, companies offer (limited) disclosure to boost their own brand legitimacy. This approach may work in the absence of external monitoring or verification. However, if such claims later fail the test of time, they can be far more harmful. There are also many companies that may unintentionally engage in Greenwashing, hoping to do good by talking about services or products that they believe to be part of the solution, but they lack the information to thoroughly investigate its impact. Although this may appear to be harmless, it can have a long-term and damaging 7 effect on the goal of a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. Vague claims, lack of proof, and false labels are all signs to look out for and as consumers become more educated as time goes on, the risk of greenwashing companies will affect them even more. Good research and due diligence take time but are ultimately worth the effort. Rajani A Editor

WORLD TOURISM DAY RETURNS TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE Tourism is a force for good, bringing hope and opportunity to many millions of people around the world.

W

orld Tourism Day returns to focus on the future. As the sector’s recovery gets underway and building on unprecedented political and public recognition for the sector, UNWTO will highlight the opportunity to rethink how we do tourism through putting people and the planet first and bringing everyone from governments and businesses to local communities together around a shared vision for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector. World Tourism Day will be celebrated as the shift towards tourism is recognized as a crucial 10

pillar of development and progress is well underway. May 2022 marked the first time the United Nations General Assembly held a special debate on tourism, illustrating the historic relevance of the sector. Tourism is now on the agenda of governments and of international organizations in every global region. At the same time, destinations and businesses are proactively adapting to meet challenges and responsibilities, as illustrated by the wave of signatories to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, spearheaded by UNWTO. The theme “Rethink Tourism”

will reflect this. It aims to inspire the debate around rethinking tourism for development, including through education and jobs, and tourism’s impact on the planet and opportunities to grow more sustainably. For its 42nd edition, The official World Tourism Day will be celebrated in Bali, Indonesia, on 27 September, highlighting the shift towards tourism being recognized as a crucial pillar of development. Bali is a destination at the forefront of reimagining tourism as a pillar of sustainable development. Tourism’s International Observance Day will put people


at the center of key discussions. The one-day celebration will bring together stakeholders from every part of tourism’s uniquely broad value chain - from political and private sector leaders to community representatives, and youth and indigenous ambassadors. The event will develop around a multi-stakeholder panel discussion on “Rethinking Tourism as a Key Element of Recovery”, as well as a discussion on “The Tourism We Want”, led by local representatives from across Bali’s tourism sector. UNWTO’s Member States will be invited to amplify the celebrations and key messages, while UNWTO will also promote the event and its central theme of rethinking tourism through its channels and partners.

r. Narendra Modi the Prime Minister of India has inaugurated Bundelkhand Expressway at Kaitheri village in Orai tehsil of Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh. Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, State Ministers, and People’s representatives were among those present on the occasion Addressing the gathering, Mr.Modi recalled the glorious tradition of hard work, valor, and cultural richness of the Bundelkhand region. He said, “the land that produced countless warriors, where the devotion for India flows in blood, the prowess and hard work of local sons and daughters have always brightened the name of the country.” Talking about the difference that will be brought about by the new expressway, the Prime Minister said “the distance from Chitrakoot to Delhi has been reduced by 3-4 hours by the Bundelkhand Expressway, but its benefit is much more than that. This expressway will not only give speed to vehicles here, but it will accelerate the industrial progress of the entire Bundelkhand.” The Prime Minister emphasized that gone are the days when such great infrastructure and facilities were limited to large cities and selected areas of the

“UP Expressway projects are connecting many neglected areas of the state and every corner of Uttar Pradesh is ready to move forward with new dreams and new resolutions; UP’s identity is changing across the country as it is outperforming many advanced states”. other Expressways are connecting every nook and corner of the state, leading to a situation where “every corner of Uttar Pradesh is ready to move forward with new dreams and new resolutions”. The DoubleEngine Government is working in that direction with renewed vigor, he said. Regarding improving air connectivity in the state, the Prime Minister said that new airport terminals came up in Prayagraj. Kushinagar got a new airport and work is going on in Jewar, NOIDA for a new airport and many more cities are being connected with air travel facilities. This will give a push to tourism and other development opportunities, he said. The Prime Minister asked the Chief Minister to develop a tourism circuit around the many forts in the region. He also asked the Chief Minister to organize fort-related events and competitions. Referring to the role of the Make In India Campaign in strengthening the small and cottage industry the Prime Minister underlined the success of the toy industry. He said due to the efforts of the government, artisans, industry, and the citizens there has been a drastic cut in the import of toys. This will benefit the poor, deprived, backward, tribals, Dalits, and women, he pointed out.

MAGAZINE LISTS KERALA & AHMEDABAD AMONG WORLD’S EXTRAORDINARY DESTINATIONS The God’s Own Contry and Ahmedabad, the capital city of Gujarat were the two Indian entries into the list of the world’s greatest places of 2022

erala and Ahmedabad have been named among “50 extraordinary destinations to explore” this year by TIME Magazine. Lavishing praise on Kerala as one of India’s most beautiful states with spectacular beaches, lush backwaters, temples, and palaces, the magazine noted, “This year, Kerala is boosting motor-home tourism in India to inspire a new pas de deux of exploration and accommodation. The state’s first caravan park, Karavan Meadows, opened in Vagamon, a scenic hill station.” While noting the success of the state’s houseboat cruising, TIME said caravans are expected to follow suit with a similar promise 14

of sustainable tourism as a large number of campers are expected to traverse the land, giving a fresh and unique way to experience Kerala’s beaches and verdant plantations. Kerala is known as “God’s Own Country” for good reason, it added. TIME Magazine said that “as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad “boasts both ancient landmarks and contemporary innovations that make it a mecca for cultural tourism,

The list is compiled through nominations from its international network of correspondents and contributors, “with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.” TIME Magazine noted that with much of the global population now vaccinated against COVID-19, “world travellers are again hitting the road—and the skies. The hospitality industry is reopening and excited to safely welcome them and revitalize local communities.”

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND RESPONSIBLE TRAVELLER CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES Sustainable and responsible tourism practices will be implemented in various projects and initiatives through Swadesh Darshan 2.0 : Shri Arvind Singh

inistry of Tourism, Govt of India in partnership with the United Environment Program (UNEP) and Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI) organized National Summit on Developing Sustainable & Responsible Tourist Destinations in New Delhi. On this occasion, the Ministry of Tourism launched the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism and Responsible Traveller Campaign. The Strategy document has identified the strategic pillars for the development of sustainable tourism like Promoting Environmental Sustainability, Protecting Biodiversity, Promoting Economic Sustainability, Promoting Socio-Cultural Sustainability,

Scheme for Certification of Sustainable Tourism, IEC, and Capacity Building and Governance. Speaking on the occasion Mr.Arvind Singh, Secretary of Tourism, Govt of India said that Tourism and Environment share a Special Relationship. Their interaction with each other is a two-way process. On the one hand, environmental resources constitute one of the basic ingredients of tourism. The natural and manmade setting form the tourism products which the tourist enjoys lives and relax. On the other hand, the close and direct relationship between visitors, host communities, and the local environment creates a sensitive situation, whereby tourism can be both very damaging and also very positive for sustainable development. The COVID-19 pandemic has further forced the tourism sector to shift its focus to resiliency, sustainability, and interconnectedness among diverse

stakeholders in the sector. Mr. Arvind Singh further said that we need to make use of cleaner fuels. Prime Minister has also announced that India will increase its capacity of non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW and meet 50 percent of its energy requirements through renewable energy by 2030. “State tourism policies should recognize sustainability principles and the Sustainable Development Goals in their vision and strategic direction for tourism. With the vision to create a sustainable future for tourism, the Ministry of Tourism has also taken various steps in this direction”, he added. Mr.Arvind said that the Ministry of Tourism with the objective to provide experience to the tourists launched Swadesh Darshan Scheme and has now sanctioned 76 Projects. “With the learnings of this scheme, we have now revamped the Swadesh Darshan Scheme as Swadesh Darshan 2.0. The idea of Swadesh Darshan 2.0 is

to undertake holistic development with the vision to develop Sustainable and Responsible Tourist Destinations. While formulating the guidelines for SD 2.0 we have kept various elements in mind in order to undertake destination development in a sustainable and responsible manner. Through the Swadesh Darshan, 2.0 sustainable and responsible tourism practices will be implemented in various projects and initiatives. The Scheme will encourage the adoption of principles of sustainable tourism including environmental, socio-cultural and economic sustainability”, he added. Mr. Shombi Sharp, Head of UN in India, and Mr. Rakesh Mathur, President, RTSOI, and various eminent Speakers working in the field of Sustainable Tourism & Responsible Travel and from State Governments addressed the participants in different sessions during the One Day National Summit.

KERALA TOURISM UNVEILS ROADMAP FOR TOURISM CLUBS ON CAMPUSES Tourism and Higher Education departments, Government of Kerala to implement the initiative

I

n an upfront initiative to ensure active participation of students in sustainable and inclusive tourism development, Kerala has unveiled a novel project to form Tourism Clubs on major college campuses across the state, as a collective endeavour of the departments of Tourism and Higher Education. Mr. PA Mohamed Riyas, Minister for Tourism, and Dr. R Bindu, Minister for Higher Education said Tourism Clubs will be formed

in 25 colleges in the state in the first phase. The Department of Tourism will provide the funds for the activities of the clubs. Mr. Riyas said tourism clubs will be in charge of the upkeep of 25 tourism destinations and they will especially ensure the hygiene of each property. The Minister exuded confidence that campus clubs will pave the way for new tourism trends and create interest in travel among students.

“The plan also includes identifying future tourism professionals among students, who can also help market the destinations using social media platforms. There are good bloggers among students and their talent can be leveraged for featuring the state’s tourism attractions before a wider audience,” Mr.Riyas said. The youngsters can also work as part-time tourism guides and cultural interactions and workshops will be conducted in concert with

P. B. NOOH IAS ASSUMES CHARGE AS THE DIRECTOR, KERALA TOURISM

r. P. B. Nooh IAS, a 2012 batch Indian Administrative Service officer has been appointed as the New Director, Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala in place of Mr. Krishna Teja IAS, who transferred as the Director, Department of Scheduled Caste, Government of Kerala. Mr. Nooh, the former District Collector of Pathanamthitta and Palakkad, is currently working as the Chief Executive Officer of Kerala Life Mission. Mr. Nooh is a native of Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district and an Agricultural Science graduate from the Banglore University of Agriculture Science. He followed the footsteps of his older brother Mr. P.B. Saleem IAS, former District Collector of Kozhikode and now a senior bureaucrat in the West Bengal government and trained to be in the civil services arena. He was ranked 48 in the year 2012 Mr. Nooh’s earlier posting in government includes Sub-Collector,

foreign universities to hone their skills. he added. Dr. Bindu said the initiative will encourage students to identify new tourism products and contribute to the growth of the tourism sector, besides fostering interest among students in travel and tourism. Kerala Tourism Director Mr.VR Krishna Teja and Ms. V Vighneshwari, Director of Collegiate Education and MD, KTDC were also present. Apart from enhancing the awareness among the youth that tourism is a vital sector for Kerala, Tourism Clubs will rope in students to see that the tourism destinations and assets are maintained well. www.tourismindia.org

Ottapalam, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Additional Chief Electoral Officer, and Additional Secretary, Election Department. Mr. Nooh took over as the DC of Pathanamthitta back in 2018. Within two months, he had to handle the biggest floods witnessed by the state in over a century, like his peers in other districts. As Collector, Nooh evacuated nearly 15 lakh people from various areas of Pathanamthitta. Pathanamthitta district got nationwide attention again in March 2020, due to the first COVID-19 hotspot in India. In a few weeks, however, he has managed to turn the tide. The time, when he was posted as the Director of Kerala Tourism at the peak of the crisis-ridden Kerala Tourism industry from 2017-18 after many challenges including the Okhi cyclone, Nipah virus, Floods and natural calamities, and two years long lockdown of the industry due to COVID 19 pandemic outbreak. Hope this crisis manager can turn around Kerala Tourism to its foot again in its 30-plus years of existence.

The clubs will seek to nurture future professionals needed by the fast-growing tourism sector, develop an international outlook among students, encourage them 19 to take an active role in nature conservation and environmental activities, and engage them in identifying new tourism spots. Also, the campus clubs will help students understand the tastes and demands of the tourists of our time. The members of the Tourism Clubs will get the opportunity to participate in major tourismrelated events in the state like Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) and Kochi Muziris Biennale. The members of the clubs will

have their uniforms, which will be the same on all campuses, as well as ID cards. They will be given certificates jointly by the departments of Tourism and Higher Education. Besides selecting the first set of 25 campuses for setting up Tourism Clubs and each club will have a maximum of 50 members. The clubs that put up outstanding performances will be considered for awards. DTPCs will be entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating the activities of clubs in their respective areas. The day-long workshop, the first in series in pursuance to the Memorandum of Agreement signed between the FAITH and Govt of

West Bengal on 21st April, 2022, held discussions on multiple issues relating to strategy roadmap for tourism development for the state of West Bengal. There was a consensus to evaluate in detail many of the issues concerning tourism, travel and hospitality industry including policy for heritage tourism, direct and last mile connectivity for tourist destinations, strengthening single window clearance mechanism for tourism, seamless tourist


transportation, adventure and ecotourism policy, prioritization of top 10 tourism products & segments, marketing & awareness campaign, development of district-wise tourism inventory and tourism calendars. The workshop discussed ways to evolve an eclectic and holistic tourism strategy for tapping the immense tourism potential of the state; connecting tourism with the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the state thereby promoting and protecting folk art, craft and folk genres. It was decided to constitute sub-groups for more focused attention on niche tourism sectors including Heritage Tourism, Rural Tourism, Film Tourism, Adventure Tourism, Eco Tourism, River Tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) Tourism. The evolving strategy shall be expected to focus on skilling, reskilling and upskilling of different professionals and stakeholders engaged in the travel and tourism industry with a view to unlock the

WTTC PUBLISHES NEW REPORT ON DESTINATION RESILIENCE Global tourism body says destination resilience is crucial to long-term sustainability

T

he World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) today published a new report on practical guidelines and case studies to support destinations in becoming more resilient and sustainable at its Sustainability and Investment Forum taking place in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The report, ‘Enhancing Resilience to Create Sustainability in Destinations’, jointly created with ICF, WTTC’s industry partner and a renowned global consultancy and digital services provider, provides practical, structured insights, for destinations as they consider their resilience and sustainability. Following the last two years of chaos brought on by the almost complete halt to international travel, no tourism destination has been untouched by the impact of COVID-19. And, many destinations have also been affected by major shocks, such as extreme weather. To support and guide destinations, this innovative analysis builds on real life case studies and presents a range of resilience actions for destinations before, during or aftershock events. The report provides five elements 22

destinations should focus on to build both resilience and longterm sustainability: environment, infrastructure, energy, economic, and societal resilience. It offers four phases to analyse the shock and its aftermath: ‘understand the risk’, ‘prepare for shocks’, ‘respond to shock’, and ‘longer term strategies’. The report presents case studies illustrating how destinations which rely heavily on tourism, whether they are cities or islands, deserts or tropics, apply resilience awareness. Puerto Rico is one of the destinations featured as a case study, highlighting the string of environmental crises and economic challenges that have

made resilience a cornerstone of their tourism strategy. Key learnings underline the importance of small businesses, identifying risks and implementing initiatives to handle any potential crisis. Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “COVID has had a devastating impact, decimating the Travel & Tourism sector around the world. But it’s certainly not the first shock to bring chaos destinations and their citizens. “This report allows destinations to understand how to better prepare, act, and plan for future risks, strengthening their resilience and long-term sustainability. “The pandemic has taught us you can never be prepared enough. Destinations have learnt not only from their own experiences, and those of other countries as they recover and build back. “Puerto Rico is an example of a destination that learned through COVID and natural disasters to become more inherently resilient.” John Wasson, ICF Chair & CEO, said: “For over half a century, ICF has been passionate about partnering with organizations all over the world to enact and

In 2019, the Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to GDP was 10.3% (U.S. $9.6 trillion), falling to 5.3% (nearly U.S. $4.8 trillion) in 2020 when the pandemic was at its height, and suffered a staggering 50% loss. WTTC’s latest EIR report also revealed that 2021 saw the beginning of the recovery for the global Travel & Tourism sector. Its contribution to GDP climbed an impressive 21.7% year on year, to reach more than US$5.8 trillion. The sector saw a recovery of more than 18 million global Travel & Tourism jobs, representing a positive 6.7% rise in 2021. While recovery is underway, more can be done to ensure the sector has a sustainable and inclusive future.

on tourism in a special Tourism Ocean Action side event of the Conference, held this week in Lisbon. Organized alongside the One Planet Sustainable Tourism

India is known for its spirituality around the world. Within the culture-travel category, OYO’s data highlights rising consumer interest in pilgrimage and heritage destinations. Varanasi, seen by many as the spiritual hub, tops the charts as the most popular pilgrimage destination in India in 2022. This is followed by Tirupati, Puri, Amritsar, and Shirdi. Besides this, OYO’s Mid-Summer Vacation Index also highlights

AN ‘OFFICE’ ABOARD THE ‘WHALE IN THE SKY’ A

Salute To Busy Bees In Uniform. “.Good afternoon Mr. Philip, how are you today, turn right and your seat is right there” – Christina with a beaming smile that beats the radiance of the warm November sunshine at Dubai’s T3 welcomes me into yet another trip on an Airbus Three-Eighty. The A380 – is incredibly large, massively spacious, yet surprisingly quiet. The wings almost never ever end, and the tail keeps going towards the skies, yet not a fuel guzzler. A head turner on the tarmac, a special-attention

seeker at the gate, yet a toy in the hands of well-trained Pilots. It’s thrilling to be up in the air in the company of clouds, in a plane that carries the weight of around 500 people, their thousands of pieces of bags, vaccines/medicines, fruits, vegetables, meat products, electronic goods, special cargo (anything from an expensive Lamborghini to a prized animal), even newspapers! And still climbs effortlessly into the atmosphere, stays afloat, and zooms at >1000km/h. Reaching the ‘upper deck’

requires almost the same number of steps to reach an A320 aircraft from the ground. Slick fittings, an experiential lighting system, spacious walkways that allow for more than a stretch of legs, round edges gentle in their bent, plush settings… any which way you look at it, there’s a sense of wonderful wonder as you step inside this silent giant. (the Queen of the Skies is still my favorite!). The most intriguing element here is a small cubicle right under the stairway from ‘Economy’ to the upper deck. The only indication that


allows you to imagine what this space could be is tiny signage that reads ‘Crew Only’ When you have to manage 500 passengers and up to 24 members of the Crew and ensure size does not eat its way into the quality of service or safety of passengers, monitoring each item on the service chart is necessary. An on-the-lap office will not suffice. Boarding At the first entry into the aircraft, Christina the leader of the Economy team continues to put up a lavish smile through her aging visage and greets everyone stepping onto this aircraft. In between many phone calls on the intercom invite her attention to the door, and boarding gets interrupted repeatedly. The door is wide, tempting the adventurous to try and make their way in, escaping her notice. But they fail. When boarding gets interrupted yet again, Tanya is roped in, and she takes over. Remember, these ‘Cabin Attendants’ repeat the same monotonous greeting to hundreds of people, for about 20-odd minutes little ‘office’ space has already gone through some amount of paperwork. Sheets of paper are haphazardly strewn around some ‘Emirates Cabin Crew Docket’ folders on the pulledout, make-shift table all of about 5 inches in depth and 2 feet in length. The door is half open, and my seat adjacent, secrets of how a ‘cabin manager’ works through the flight, are out in the open, almost. Michael, tall, active and pleasant, is slicing his towering figure through passengers who board the flight. As the Cockpit Crew is busy getting their share of paperwork done with the ground, technical, and airport staff, an engineer enters the ‘office’. Now to fit a 6’+ figure in that ‘office’ is quite difficult indeed. He has to first bend, and while at that, ensure he does not even unintentionally hit a passenger walking by, with any part of his body. He then nearly crawls almost on his knees and gets seated. There’s hardly any space to move or manoeuvre to retrieve a sheet of paper that falls down. www.tourismindia.org

Michael, already signing a few sheets and tapping some keys on the computer, has an urgent sheet to take to the cockpit, but only after the engineer is able to leave the ‘office’. Doors are waiting to be closed, the Captain impatiently looks behind for Michael.As the engineer looks on, a family of 5 (the last to board) is struggling to move on ahead and get to their seats; once they get past, he can exit the ‘office’ and make way for Michael so he can head to the ‘flight deck’. Captain James looks back time and again through the half-open cockpit door and urges for the document. Every second is precious because delays can put EK005 in a queue pile up at the end of the runway. This is an already delayed flight of 18 minutes; cost is another matter. Shaking his head fully knowing that Michael and the engineer are stuck inside the ‘office’, Captain James uses the time to make a fast-paced and hurried greeting to all passengers – he explains the route, warns of ‘bumps’, and informs us about the weather at London. Soon after, he heads to the lavatory! Documents signed, Michael runs down from the cockpit, gently pushes Christina away from the door, pushes a button and the huge door starts to roll in for closure. While at it, he reaches the public announcement system urging “all ground personnel to leave the aircraft”, and waves at the ground personnel. Doors are closed. An urgent barrage of calls from David the manager of the upper deck arrives one after the other in39search of Michael. Michael then makes a quick announcement instructing all cabin attendants to “arm all doors and cross-check” – his restless fingers searching for the buttons frantically. Christina does her door. In the midst of another intercom call, he signals her to do his door too, since he’s sorting out a ‘business class issue’. At the same time, he keeps a keen eye on Christina arming the door. Banging the phone on the rest, he swiftly flies up the upper deck

where First and Business Class seats are located. In a few seconds, he almost slides down. Hurriedly swirls into the ‘office’, grabs a paper, signs it in his ‘office’, and then it is faxed. Meanwhile, his ID card is swiped beside the inbuilt computer monitor, opening to an admin page on the inflight operations software resembling the ‘Emirates Airline’ website. A few buttons are touched, a few cabin lights come on, and the customary Arabic welcome address follows. “Short Taxi”, he silently screams at his colleagues on the intercom, indicating that there’s very little time to finish “before takeoff” duties, on this flight that is now almost 40 minutes late. Christina and another colleague cannot manage a stuck baggage compartment door and Michael’s help is requested. In a minute it is sorted out by changing positions of a few bags after identifying them with corresponding passengers. He’s back at the ‘office’ by which time captain James and his Sr First Officer roles on the Rolls Royce Trent 900-powered aircraft towards the top of the taxiway. ‘Safety’ and ‘ICE’ movies are turned on. Almost all members of the crew, though smiling and seemingly enjoying the briskness of work, are heaving a sigh of relief as they sit down at designated seats. A mother and two girls seated in front are almost wide-eyed JULY 2022 TOURISM INDIA

seeing a terrifyingly busy crew. One of the girls is putting finishing touches to a school project that’s to be submitted on Monday at a London school perhaps, and Michael spotting that stops and chats up with them; also using the opportunity to tell them to fold the tray table for taking off. At the end of it, he leaves a message with the girls: “study well and don’t end up with a job like mine”! What did he mean? On the taxiway, the monstrous aircraft continues to roll on effortlessly. The brakes are slammed briefly and the most pleasant faces of the cabin crew (moving towards the right side crew seats) are taken aback, but quickly regroup. A middle-aged man on the front row asks Michael who is now seated: “busy day” (he’s been running non-stop)? “Well we have

not started yet” comes the quick response, as his fingers roll across his face in true British style.

Airborne

Quickly thereafter, we are airborne. Members of the Cabin Crew seated in front and facing the first few rows of ‘Economy’, display highly relieved faces for managing to keep things under control just before the huge plane begins to sprint on the runway. As the blue waters of the sea below us emerge, the soft ‘ding’ followed by the intercom ringing for Michael signals the next phase of service on the flight. A string of services is quickly rolled out by the crew. Hot towels, menu cards, fixing faulty tv screens, serving welcome drinks and savories, lunch, and tea. As the ‘crew’ pick up their sprint from where they left, those urgently wanting to use the lavatories form

a line in front of the stairs. While some doze off, others are busy surfing through thousands of channels on the ICE system, and the odd traveller is either reading a book or going through some official papers. The odd toddler screams too! It’s all happening. It’s now nearly two hours since take off.Food carts are being cleared, stowed, and kept ready for the ‘empty cart collection’ in London. The crew is yet to eat. As one bunch does the clearing, the other is keeping ready ‘open galley’ drinks, snacks, and chocolates. Michael and Christina meanwhile, are planning pre-landing snacks, it seems! Soon, the busy ‘office on the whale’ is quiet, and its ‘doors are closed. An hour or so later, the doors are open again. Michael goes in and comes out a few times, each time picking up a paper, jotting something, and passing it on to other members of the Crew. Christina meanwhile runs to the ‘office’ – one of just three who has access here. The built-in computer system in the ‘office’ from where all in-flight cabin crew controls are situated has just been swiped with her ID card (I suppose). It refuses to respond. Christina is frustrated and calls for someone to rectify the ‘hung’ system. A colleague arrives, fixes the ‘bug’, and leaves muttering something to himself. Christina does not forget to thank him. But there’s no response. Genelle comes to do her reporting of the Business Class ‘performance’ and eggs the current occupant to hurry up. David pops in to clarify something. The three have a brief


exchange of opinions.’ The office’ is shut again for a few minutes before Michael comes back, swirls in, takes another bunch of papers, connects his iPad, swipes the computer, and starts to work. Four people are frantically called from here, most of them not available. The phone is gently banged. But return calls come in one after the other, and Michael briskly answers them with a series of queries/instructions. A pile of paper is then filled and signed (I think). Corresponding entries are made on the iPad. More calls are made, he’s made to wait impatiently, fingers are at work – the black pen revolves at the speed of a fan. Doubts are clarified and those papers are stacked and filed. A big box file is taken out of the cupboard and a few more sheets are checked. The ‘comments and incidents’ page on the iPad opens up. A flurry of quick touches on the iPad, then on the computer. A fresh pack of UK Landing Cards are taken out, and allocated to several members of the smiling crew for distribution. Less than 1.5 hours to land and the snack service – cold sandwiches with tea and muffins – is being carried out. Lunch was heavy with turkey salad, sauced rice and chicken, toasted buns, coconutsprinkled chocolate cake with mango jelly, tea, and chocolates! Water, of course. 50 minutes to landing and the pace of activity in the cabin has now once again picked up. Crew members are moving around trying to finish up most of the things before the cockpit crew announces descent into London.

Landing

And then Captain James announces descent into a cold London. That’s the hint Michael needed to get into a set of landing announcements with a wide open, warm, and expressive smile, but obviously hurried and quick. As I peep into his ‘office’, he responds with a wink. No papers to refer. He’s reciting the announcements as if it’s a poem. In child-like exuberance, Michael continues to run up and down with many things, including the www.tourismindia.org

donations bag. The rest of the crew is now on a blanket and headphone collection spree at breakneck speed. The aircraft has now descended to 12,000 ft from 38,000 ft. in about 8-10 minutes. Glorious London under lights is clearly visible. The descent is a bit bumpy as it usually is on the London route, enveloped in thick cloud cover, but the size of the aircraft makes it all so easy on the passengers. Michael wraps up his never-ending set of papers, files, and iPad. Now just the computer screen is open. Just as we hope for a smooth landing, the cockpit crew announces ‘holding’ in the air by the ATC LHR … “that’s another 15 minutes” – mutters Michael, and runs to the lavatory. Christina makes a quick visit to the ‘office’ and waits impatiently for Michael. She’s pensive. On spotting his shoes appear out of the lav, she politely asks “do we have time?” “For what,” he asks back. “To close the bar”, to which he screeches in controlled anger. On giving her a greatly relieving 5 additional minutes to close the bar, Christina, in excitement and relief and runs up. Unknown to me until then, the rest of the team had their heads pop out from behind the galley curtains to see Michael’s response. Jubilantly pumping their fists, they are happy and thankful. With a resurgent sense of renewed urgency, they go about closing up. The last instruction, three ‘holding patterns’ later: “don’t forget to get everyone to sign their log time sheets (if I got that right) before they leave, yea”: At that, the aircraft dives a further 2,000 ft and the London Docklands with its iconic O2 Arena are now naked to the eye. Yes! It’s London41one more time. For the first time in about 8 hours, Michael and his team are now ‘seated’ ‘peacefully’ and quite jobless too!

goodbyes to some passengers. After yet another successfully completed flight, they are laughing, smiling, patting each other’s back,s and waiting at the exit doors ready to ‘disarm and cross check’. With warm smiles Michael and Christina bid us goodbye. Michael engaged in few seconds of chat, commenting on my black trolley bag. “Wow” he exclaimed when he heard it was from Hangzhou. There were a couple more sentences exchanged about the nature of his work that he loves to do every day, but now was looking forward to a break of two weeks before his next flight back to Dubai. The question really is, which part of the job of the cabin crew is glamorised? Just the travel in terms of the opportunity to be in different parts of the world, I think. Whether on the ground, up in the air, or back on earth, there’s so much of responsibility and time-critical things to do… not even one can be delayed, or missed. On a British Airways 777 from LHR to Bangalore, there was a similarly tall, friendly, and forever buzzing Economy cabin manager. Whenever I lifted my head he was either hurrying to the front or carrying something to the galley behind! I doubt if he ever sat down on that 9+ hour flight. An hour before landing I asked him, “you must be tired”. On the go he replied, “yes, but 230 of you were comfortable, isn’t it, that’s my joy”? Despite everything, airline cabin crew manage to put up welcoming smiles, assuredly and patiently answer questions, or hold their composure even if air turbulence is moderate, or even when a passenger finds it difficult to breathe! They are the busy bees in uniform. Salute!

he highly-acclaimed Grimaldi Forum will have an exceptional gift to offer its clients as early as 2025, namely a vast extension of its building within an eco-district boasting green space. This eco-district project will

offer housing, a car park, shops, restaurants, a pine tree forest, and a marina. Answering very strict environmental requirements is part of the Principality’s objective to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Also note that a part of the electricity powered by 1,500 photovoltaic modules installed on its roof since 2019, allows the Grimaldi Forum to supply energy to the surrounding buildings and this new district. It is thus quite natural that the congress and cultural center of the Principality certified ISO 14001 since 2008 and are part of this ambitious project. Moreover, enriched with new shops and restaurants, the recent renovation of the nearby Larvotto beach area is an additional asset that will enable congress participants to enjoy all the services close to their congress center. The Grimaldi Forum is one of the first European centers to have received – since 2008 – the precious ISO 14 001 certification.

JAMAICA WELCOMES ONE MILLIONTH VISITOR FOR 2022 Continuing the destination’s strong tourism recovery, Jamaica welcomed its one millionth stopover arrival for 2022 on June 15

amaica welcomed more than one million stopover visitors to the island on June 15, 2022. The arrival of the country’s onemillionth stopover visitor is a signal of the strength of the country’s tourism recovery and how the industry continues to rebound rapidly from the COVID-19 pandemic. The arrival figures from the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) signal that the sector is proving its resilience and a return to pre-pandemic performance is on the horizon. In the mid of June, Jamaica surpassed the one million-visitor mark for this year. The island is continuing its efforts to achieve its 2022 projections, which an of total visitor arrivals of 3.2 million and total revenue of US$3.3 billion. Honorable Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism of Jamaica, addressed a function at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to celebrate the milestone of the visitor figures. “This moment is a testament to the confidence that the market shows in Jamaica as well as the strength, resilience, and enduring appeal of Jamaica’s tourism product as we build back stronger,” said Minister Bartlett. “It is a testimony to the hard work of our tourism workers and the success of the Jamaica Cares programme, which has

prioritised the health and safety of Jamaican citizens and visitors,” he added. Jamaica is already witnessing excellent signs of recovery as the tourism industry continues to drive the island’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery. The Tourism Director, Donovan White, said that “Jamaica has been seeing a steadily increasing growth in stopover arrivals this year. The summer bookings are pacing ahead of 2019 (pre-pandemic), to be the strongest summer we have ever experienced”. Minister Bartlett further added: “It is wonderful to see more than one million guests already in this

year of our 60th anniversary, with the bulk of arrivals having accrued in just the past four months, and the expectation that we will welcome the next million stopovers in the next four months. We encourage everyone to explore the island, connect with our people and learn about our culture so they will want to come back to Jamaica again and again,” he added. Tourism arrivals for 2023 are projected to reach 3.7 million and $3.5 billion in earnings, with 2024 expected to surpass 2019 levels with 4.2 million visitors and $4 billion in revenue.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL DRIVES MAY AIR TRAFFIC RECOVERY India’s domestic RPKs rose 405.7% year-on-year in May, compared to the 78.6% increase recorded in April. In May 2021, India had experienced the country’s most severe COVID-19 outbreak.

T

he International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced passenger data for May 2022 showing that the recovery in air travel accelerated heading into the busy Northern Hemisphere

summer travel season. Total traffic in May 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) was up 83.1% compared to May 2021, largely driven by the strong recovery in international traffic. Global traffic is now at 68.7% of pre-crisis levels. Domestic traffic for May 2022 was up 0.2% compared to the year-ago period. Significant improvements in many markets were masked by 56

a 73.2% year-on-year decline in the Chinese domestic market due to COVID-19 related restrictions. May 2022 domestic traffic was 76.7% of May 2019. International traffic rose 325.8% versus May 2021. The easing of travel restrictions in most parts of Asia is accelerating the recovery of international travel. May 2022 international RPKs reached 64.1% of May 2019 levels. “The travel recovery continues to gather momentum. People need to travel. And when governments remove COVID-19 restrictions, they do. Many major international route areas – including within Europe, and the Middle East-North America routes - are already exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels. Completely removing all COVID-19 restrictions is the way forward, with Australia being the latest to do so this week. The major exception to the optimism of this rebound in travel is China, which saw a dramatic 73.2% fall in domestic travel compared to the previous year. Its continuing zero-COVID policy is out-of-step with the rest of the world and it

shows in the dramatically slower recovery of China-related travel,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. International Passenger Markets European carriers’ May traffic rose 412.3% versus May 2021. Capacity rose 221.3%, and load factor climbed 30.1 percentage points to 80.6%. The impact of the war in Ukraine remained limited to areas directly impacted. Asia-Pacific airlines had a 453.3% rise in May traffic compared to May 2021. This is significantly higher than the 295.3% year-on-year gain registered in April 2022. Capacity rose 118.8% and the load factor was up 43.6 percentage points to 72.1%. Improvements in the region are being driven by reduced restrictions in most of the region’s markets, except China. Middle Eastern airlines’ traffic rose 317.2% in May compared to May 2021. May capacity rose 115.7% versus the year-ago period, and load factor climbed 37.1 percentage points to 76.8%. The

With most restrictions removed for travelers from this region, tourism and a high willingness to travel continue to foster the international recovery as several other routes areas are now outperforming 2019 results.

Latin American airlines’ May 57 traffic rose 180.5% compared to the same month in 2021. May capacity rose 135.3% and load factor increased 13.5 percentage points to 83.4%, which was the highest load factor among the regions for the 20th consecutive month. Some routes, including those from Central America to Europe and to North America, are outperforming 2019 levels. African airlines had a 134.9% rise in May RPKs versus a year ago. May 2022 capacity was up

78.5% and load factor climbed 16.4 percentage points to 68.4%, the lowest among regions. US domestic traffic was up 26.1% in May, compared to May 2021. 2022 vs 2019 The strong results in most international and domestic markets compared to a year ago is helping passenger demand catch-up to 2019 levels. Total RPKs in May 2022 reached 68.7% of May 2019 levels, which was the best performance against preCOVID-19 travel so far this year.

POSITIVE INCREASES IN IVAS PREDICTED TO BEGIN IN 2022 FOR ASIA PACIFIC The number of foreign arrivals into and across the Asia Pacific is still projected to either reach parity with the 2019 position or be well above it by 2024

T

he Pacific Asia Travel Association has released its latest quarterly updated international visitor arrivals (IVAs) forecast current to May 6, 2022, based on the data provided by 39 Asia Pacific destinations. In line with the start of the region’s travel recovery, aggregate numbers into the 39 Asia Pacific destinations are projected to have step-wise annual increases beginning in 2022 and continuing to 2024 across all three of the mild, medium, and severe scenarios. IVA recovery rates (above the 2019 baseline level) for visitors into and across the Asia Pacific are predicted to reach between 25-48% of the volume last received in 2019, with the numbers reflecting the range of potential outcomes from severe to the mild scenario. This is a solid improvement over the 16-18% range of 2021 – the trough year for most Asia Pacific 58

destinations – and heralds the beginning of a continued growth trend to 2024. The number of foreign arrivals into and across the Asia Pacific is still projected to either reach parity with the 2019 position (medium scenario) or be well

above it (mild scenario) by 2024. Even so, the severe scenario reminds us that a possibility still exists for conditions to deteriorate once again – with multiple influencing factors including the ongoing pandemic continually evolving,


the Ukraine/Russia crisis, escalating jet fuel prices, limited air capacity, and routes, plus industry-wide staff shortages. While annual growth is predicted to occur for each of the 39 destinations covered between 2022 and 2024, there will of course be some variations. This is illustrated by the differences in relative positions for each of the three destination regions of Asia Pacific, as well as under each of the three scenarios within each of those regions. At the individual destination level, recovery rates vary broadly in 2022 and are predicted to range from less than 15% to

almost 99%, while in 2024, they range from 86% to 120% under that same scenario. Overall, however, projections are now for the Asia Pacific to reach an IVA count in 2024 of 510-832 million, depending on which scenario plays out over that period. Similar variations are apparent across the source market regions relevant to the Asia Pacific, although in general, the trend is back towards the same inbound structure of 2024, at least under the medium scenario. As PATA CEO Liz Ortiguera observes “While a positive turning point is predicted to occur in 2022 for all the 39 Asia

Pacific destinations covered in these updated forecasts, many market variables are currently influencing travel and significant challenges still lay ahead. While the momentum for international travel demand is obviously increasing, multiple challenges need to be navigated by the global travel and tourism sector.” “From emerging new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to escalating jet fuel prices, the specter of rising inflation to the current geopolitical conflicts, these variables are concerns in the face of global pentup demand to reconnect and travel.”

ADVANCING SAFE MOBILITY FOR STRONGER RECOVERY The progress during these past two years, alongside increased coordination among governments, have prompted the basis for a strong recovery

NWTO joined the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Spain in the recent High-Level Meeting on Safe International Travel held in Ibiza on 7-8 July. The High-Level Meeting focused on the lessons learned from the impact of the pandemic on international mobility and tourism, to build resilience to face future crises. “The progress during these past two years, alongside increased coordination among governments, have prompted the basis for a strong recovery”, said Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili. Underscoring that “vaccine equity remains a big challenge”, he stressed that “implementing what we have learned is critical for how we deal with future pandemics, as we work to consolidating how we grow back better”. Participants recognized that 62

the recovery of cross-border travel requires easing and lifting COVID-related travel restrictions as far as possible, while ensuring public health considerations Chaired by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain, Reyes Maroto, the meeting gathered health and the tourism sector representatives of over 30 countries, the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other UN agencies such as the International Organizational

for Migration (IMO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The High-Level Meeting on Safe International Travel was held in support of the G20 Indonesian Presidency of 2022. Backed by key stakeholders such as OECD, WHO, ICAO and UNWTO, participants encouraged the Indonesian chair to incorporate the main points into the relevant initiatives of the G20 process,, namely the G20 Health Working Group’s priority on Harmonizing global health standards focused on the Harmonization of COVID-19 and other Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPD) Certificate Recognition at the Point of Entry. On the occasion, UNWTO and OECD released an impact assessment of the pandemic on tourism showcasing how the sector was among the most affected.


TOURISM STATISTICS UN REPORTS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Prepared in collaboration with the entire UN Statistical System, the reports and their latest available data show that action is needed to accelerate the delivery on the SDGs and to step up national measurement efforts, including for the tourism sector.

United Nations global assessment of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) makes clear the important role that tourism must play in achieving the ambitious agenda for change. Launched at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which this year is held around the theme of ‘building back better’ from the pandemic, the UN reports draw on UNWTO’s statistical work to track tourism’s role in delivering meaningful progress for people and the planet. Specifically, the UN SG Progress report on SDGs with its statistical annex will serve as an input to the deliberations of the HLFP. Alongside this, the Sustainable Development Goals Extended Report is aimed at the wider public and provides an overview of all 17 Goals with infographics, including those illustrating the relevance of tourism. Prepared in collaboration with the entire UN Statistical System, the reports and their latest available data show that action is needed to accelerate the delivery on the SDGs and to step up national measurement efforts, including for

the tourism sector. As demonstrated in section on SDG8 (‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’), tourism a major force of development was one of the most affected economic sectors by the COVID-19 Pandemic as global GDP from tourism nearly 63 halved between 2019 and 2020, with wide-reaching consequences for jobs, local businesses and conservation efforts. On SDG12 (‘Responsible Production and Consumption’), UNWTO’s statistics serve to highlight the importance of national efforts to implement standardized tools like Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSAs) and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA). Both underpin the UNWTO-led Statistical

Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) that assesses the social, economic and environmental impacts and dependencies of tourism—at national and sub-national levels -. These tools also underline the importance of multistakeholder collaboration which is fostered through the Sustainable Tourism Programme of the One Planet network. As countries build back better and aim to build more sustainable and resilient tourism, various policy frameworks have recognized the need for these measurement tools to guide their efforts and thus contribute to more evidence-based policymaking. Examples at the international and regional level are the UNWTO Recommendations for the Transition to a Green Travel and Tourism Economy and the AlUla Framework for Inclusive Community Development Through Tourism, both welcomed and endorsed by the G20, the European Parliament resolution on establishing a strategy for sustainable tourism, the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework, UNWTO General Assembly resolutions and UN Statistical Commission decisions.
