The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent and are widely recognized as a significant concern. Climate change, the biggest challenge facing sustainable development, is the result of unsustainable practices in areas such as industrial development, energy production, land use, lifestyles, and consumption patterns.

Energy security is a major concern for many countries. Addressing this issue involves a fundamental shift towards sustainable energy systems that also consider the limited capacity of the atmosphere to absorb emissions. Combining the goal of energy security with climate security can yield positive results.

Sustainability and addressing climate change should not be a standalone policy, but rather an overarching strategy that influences all actions and responsibilities. This includes the upkeep of the environment, roads, waste recycling, transportation, and even individuals’ and employees’ daily behavior. In short, addressing climate change must be integrated into all aspects of society.

Sustainability is not just about the environment, but also about creating a strong and resilient community that feels supported by its surroundings. As the pursuit of sustainability is non-negotiable and essential for a better future for all citizens and future generations, local government plays a crucial role in building a sustainable community and promoting community engagement. By fostering a sense of community ownership and action, local government can help to ensure that the goal of sustainability is met.

There are many opportunities for members of a community to make a difference on a daily basis and take positive steps towards achieving a sustainable

THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW

future. This is crucial in fostering a community that is driven, committed, and spirited. By taking action and encouraging one another, we can all do our part in building a sustainable future. This not only benefits us and future generations but also helps to create a stronger and more resilient community.

Waste management is a crucial issue in the sustainable development of the 21st century. One effective way to address the issue of waste management and promote sustainable development is to educate individuals, families, and organizations on the importance of minimizing waste. By teaching people about conscious product choice, packaging, and reuse of materials, we can help to reduce waste and protect the environment. Making provisions for recycling, purchasing products that are reusable, recyclable, or made from recycled materials, and participating in clean-up and recycling programs can also raise awareness and encourage people to think before throwing materials in the trash. These efforts can help to ensure that our surroundings remain healthy, resilient, and sustainable for current and future generations.

It is essential that we make the most of every opportunity to promote tangible action on the issue of waste management and sustainable development, rather than continuing to engage in theoretical debates and political negotiations. We cannot afford to waste any more time in discussions; it is high time to take action. We can all do our part in protecting the environment and building a sustainable future. Let us not delay any longer; it is time to act now.

Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India in the latest edition of Mann Ki Baat, highlights the importance of various festivals, celebrations and sports in uniting people

NEWS / NATIONAL

Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, during the 94th Edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on 30th October 2022 highlighted the importance of various festivals, celebrations, and sports like Chhath, National Unity Day, Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, Gurupurab, Navratri and National Games in uniting people and bringing out the spirit of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat.

The Prime Minister said that ‘Chhath’, the great festival of sun worship is being celebrated in many parts of the country. The festival of Chhath is an example of ‘Ek Bharat- Shrestha Bharat’, the Prime Minister said. Chhath is celebrated with great pomp by the people of Bihar and Purvanchal. It is now getting organized on a large scale in different districts of Maharashtra along with Delhi, Mumbai, and many parts of Gujarat. The Prime Minister said that he remembers that earlier in Gujarat, Chhath Pooja was not performed to this extent. Now the colors of Chhath Puja have started getting dissolved in almost the whole of Gujarat.

The rich heritage of India, our faith, is reinforcing its identity in every corner of the world.

Talking about the Nation Unity Day, the PM said that on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Run for Unity is organized in every corner of the country. This race strengthens the thread of unity in the country and inspires our youth.

Prime Minister elaborated that the same sentiment has been seen during our National Games as well. With the theme ‘Judega India to Jeetega India’, National Games, on the one hand, have given a strong message of unity, on the other, have promoted India’s sports culture. The National Games this time was the biggest ever organized in India, the Prime Minister said. 36 sports were included in this, in which, 7 new and two indigenous competitions, Yogasan and Mallakhamb were also included. The PM said that the National Games were held during Navratri in Gujarat. While the players also used to

participate in the games during the day; in the evening they used to get immersed in the colors of Garba and Dandiya. The way art, sports, and culture came together during the National Games in Ahmedabad, filled all with joy. They also shared a lot of pictures of Gujarati food and Navratri on social media. After all, through games like these, one comes to know about the diverse cultures of India. They equally strengthen the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat’, the Prime Minister said. PM further said that on the 15th of November, our country will celebrate the Janjatiya Gaurav Divas. The country started this last year to celebrate the tribal heritage and pride on the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda.

Bhagwan Birsa

Munda had united millions of people against British rule and sacrificed his life to protect India’s independence and tribal culture. He had always emphasized that we should not forget our tribal culture, we should not go far from it at all.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT ‘CENTRE STAGE’ OF TOURISM’S RESTART

The four pilot countries have led the way in putting gender-equality centre stage of their tourism recovery plans and UNWTO is committed to taking this work further and wider

18 NOVEMBER 2022 TOURISM INDIA www.tourismindiaonline.com NEWS / NATIONAL

With the pandemic having made clear the extent to which women and girls everywhere are disproportionately affected by crisis, UNWTO partnered with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and UN Women to put gender equality at the heart of recovery plans. The Center Stage project was piloted in four countries – Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jordan and Mexico – bringing on board both governments and businesses as well as NGOs and community associations.

As part of the initiative, UNWTO conducted a survey on the impact of COVID-19 on tourism employment. The research found that, between March 2020 and September 2021, women in tourism were:

3% more likely to lose their job, 8% more likely to have a pay cut and 8% more likely to have reduced working hours in Costa Rica.

5% more likely to lose their job, 2% more likely to have reduced working hours and 12% more likely to have a pay cut in the Dominican Republic.

4% more likely to lose their job, 8% less likely to have a pay rise and 20% more

likely to pay someone to look after their dependents in Jordan.

3% more likely to lose their job, 8% more likely to have a pay cut and 3% more likely to take time off to care for their dependents in Mexico.

UNWTO’s pioneering ‘Centre Stage’ project was designed to address this, working with 3 governments, 38 businesses and 13 civil society organizations to implement year-long gender action plans.

The project has produced the following results:

702 businesses/entrepreneurs received gender-equality training

712 people received in-person training

526 women received a promotion

100% of participating businesses strengthened sexual harassment prevention

100% of participating businesses committed to ‘equal pay for work of equal value’

OBSERVATORIES GUIDING SHIFT TOWARDS MORE SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT TOURISM
Observatories are an excellent tool for guiding and accompany this change and ensure evidence-based decision- making

Meeting

in Madrid, the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) welcomed insights from more than 150 experts, with a focus on key topics including the shift towards a circular economy and reducing food waste across the sector. The global network of INSTO Observatories is pioneering and implementing, very often for the first time, catalytic activities designed to help the tourism sector implement sustainable development at the destination level. Together, they are leading the transformation of tourism by building on the principles of participatory approaches including all stakeholders to ensure an inclusive and resilient tourism development.

Sustainable production and consumption

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “To ensure the sustainable transformation of the tourism sector, its development must be seen as a means to achieve the overall prosperity of a local community and the surrounding environment rather than a goal in itself. The Observatories are an excellent tool for guiding and accompanying this change and ensuring

evidence-based decision-making.”

Another topic was the availability of data from a growing variety of data sources, making it increasingly difficult to process them into useful information needed for an informed decision- and policy-making process. It was agreed that all of these issues will be addressed in the INSTO Network through webinars and technical discussions.

Network keeps growing

Within the framework of the meeting, the Center of Tourism Economics of the State of Sao Paolo in Brazil and the Biscay Tourism Intelligence System in Spain were officially welcomed as new members of the Network. Both destinations have based their commitment to sustainable tourism development on participatory approaches, evidence generation, and transparency, all three important requirements for membership.

The meeting was also an opportunity to introduce the five members who have joined since 2021: Mallorca, Barcelona, and Málaga from Spain, the Yukon from Canada, and Bogotá in Colombia.

Destinations around the world are reporting significant advances in sustainable tourism, with timely evidence and analytics serving as key tools for transformation as the sector’s recovery continues to get underway.

Ethnic Tourism– is a participatory tourism development approach evolved on the basis of UNWTO’s motto ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth. The project is being implemented as part of the globallyacclaimed Responsible Tourism initiative of the Kerala Tourism Department.

Tourism to move forward with more new initiatives.”, said Tourism Minister Mr.PA Mohamad Riyas,

“This award is a categoric recognition of Kerala’s fast and concerted efforts post-Covid for inclusive development of tourism destinations. This award encourages us to take forward Kerala Tourism’s RT initiatives with more conviction and resolve. The Kerala Government will continue its focus on ensuring that local communities actively participate in tourism activities across the whole of Kerala, thereby ensuring more economic benefits to the community”, he added

This project is especially important for a place like Kerala whose core strength is natural assets. Through STREET, the state aims at conserving these invaluable assets side by side the tourism development, Mr. Riyas further added.

The project focuses on a themebased street development approach at tourism destinations to reduce the overconcentration of activities at core centers, widen the area of interest for visitors, and maximise the local community benefit.

‘Water Street’ is one major stream

of the STREET Project, successfully implemented at Maravanthuruthu Panchayat in Kottayam District near the world-renowned RT destination Kumarakom.

As part of developing Water Streets at Maravanthuruthu, 18 canals, three rivers, and a backwater stretch flowing through the area have been cleaned and deepened as the combined effort of the local community, RT Mission units, and the local Panchayat the banks of the canals were protected with coir rapping and cultivation of herbal and vegetable plants. Once the free flow of clean water was ensured, water-related tourism activities like Kayaking, rowing country boats, and shikhara trips were taken up and marketing of local products and live fishing activities were organised.

Launched to promote experiential tourism, such activities are taken up by the local community with a local monitoring mechanism. These activities have led to the development of the subcategory called Water STREET and it proved that Tourism can protect water bodies with the strong involvement of the community. It proved that if the

local community finds a livelihood in the water body its members will get actively involved in conservation activities.

A positive environmental impact has been created through these activities in the project area and helped control the water-logging and flooding during the rainy season. Through WATER STREET Kerala’s Responsible Tourism Mission has shown the world that tourism can become a tool for water conservation if connected with local economic development.

Mr. KS Srinivas IAS, Principal Secretary, Tourism; Mr. P. Nooh, Director, Tourism and Mr. K Rupeshkumar, State Coordinator, Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission are also part of the delegation to WTM London 2022.

SOAKING IN SPLENDOURS OF BRAJ

Whether it is the fascination for the divine bliss or the quest to unravel the holy land, Braj Bhoomi vows travellers with loads of mythology, amazing architecture and picturesque landscapes.

FEATURE / DESTINATION

Forthe ever-exploring Indian travellers with a penchant for mythology and intending to take a break in the enchanting land of Radha and Krishna, then the Land of Braj is your preferred destination. The birthplace of Lord Krishna, the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu is popularly known as Braj Bhoomi which falls in Golden Triangle and is a mere two hours drive from New Delhi taking the Yamuna Expressway. For those who opt to travel en route Delhi-Agra National Highway, it is around 155 km. Mathura and Vrindavan are the two significant destinations in Braj with a plethora of tourist attractions. It is best to halt at one of these destinations and make a complete tour of the Braj circuit.

Vrindavan vignette

Nearly 181 km from New Delhi is the pilgrim resort of Vrindavan which is synonymous with Radha and Lord Krishna. One needs to devote a couple of days to exploring the pilgrim resort of Vrindavan replete with renowned and grand shrines. Start off with a visit to Katyayani temple in the old quarters of the town. Devoted to Goddess Parvati, Katyayani temple is highly revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in the country. From here move on to the spectacular Sri Ranganath temple honouring Lord Vishnu and his consort, Lakshmi. Ranked as one of the largest shrines in North India, the foundation of Sri Ranganath temple was laid in 1845 and completed in

1851 at a whopping cost of Rs 45 lakhs. The high point of Sri Ranganath temple is the presence of Garor Stambh- a huge pillar carved of gold.

The next point of exploration is Vanshi Vat, the holy site on the banks of river Yamuna where Lord Krishna had performed the Maha Raas along with Radha and Gopis. Vanshi Vat has the famed, age-old banyan tree where

FEATURE / DESTINATION

Lord Krishna played his flute. This is incidentally the destination that Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited on his Vrindavan sojourn.

When it comes to Banke Bihari temple, it is the most visited shrine in Vrindavan and enjoys the distinction of being the holiest of shrines devoted to Lord Krishna. Here the devouts converge to get glimpses of Nand Gopal (Lord Krishna in the form of a child). Pilgrims need to head to the shrine during its scheduled visiting hours. The shrine came up way back in 1864 and was the creation of Swami Haridas, the mentor of Tansen. The next day should be devoted to visiting the new-age shrines of Vrindavan. There is the fabulous Prem Mandir sprawling over 54 acres of land area on Sri Kripalu Maharaj ji Marg that stands as an outstanding masterpiece of marble architecture. The glittering two-tiered shrine boasts profusely adorned interiors and has been the brainchild of Jagadguru Kripalu Parishad. Also known as Shyama Shyam, the interiors of the shrine flaunt chandeliers and lighting facilities in a riot of colours. At Prem Mandir, there are life-size portraits of the great Hindu reformers of India like Shankaracharya, Madhavacharya, Ramanuja, Kripalu, and Lalita Avatar. The shrine complex has a

fascinating, landscaped garden.

In the vicinity of Prem Mandir stands another massive shrine and is none other than Shri Krishna Balaram temple honouring Radha and Lord Krishna. The shrine traces the journey of Sreela Prabhupada who took the Bhakti movement to the world. For travellers interested to know about the teachings of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, this is the place to be. Sreela Prabhupada made huge strides to lay the foundation of international temples and establish Krishna consciousness in New York way back in 1965.

Legendary Gokul

Around 15 Km from Mathura is the 5,500-year-old pilgrim hamlet of Gokul on the banks of the serene-flowing river Yamuna. One has to cross the Gokul Barrage to reach Gokul. This is the destination where Lord Krishna was raised in secrecy in order to protect him from the evil clutches of his maternal uncle, Kansa. Gokul Dham in Mahavan Tehsil of Mathura has a lot of attractions for pilgrims. One can stroll around the impressive Thakurani Ghat on the banks of river Yamuna or opt for a river cruise. Devote some time to soak in the ambiance of the destination. A tour of

Gokul begins with the Baithak of Shri Vallabhacharya Mahaprabhu, the great saint, and philosopher of Vaishnavism who visited Gokul after Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Gokul is incidentally the birthplace of Yogmaya, the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. There is a slew of shrines including Yogmaya and the shrine of Goddess Yamuna on Thakurani Ghat. There is Makhan Chor Gali in Gokul Dham where the mythological tales come alive. The most significant monument in Gokul is Shri Nand Kila Bhawan which forms the palace of Nand Baba where the naming ceremony of Lord Krishna was performed. Lying nearby is a 6,000-yearold Shri Nand Bhawan temple built by Vishwakarma that has highly carved stone pillars. This shrine forms the birthplace of Goddess Yogmaya and Balarama.

The pilgrim point of Nand Gaon

For those interested to catch a glimpse of the site associated with Lord Krishna’s childhood years, head to Nandgaon. At a distance of 52 km northwest of Mathura, the semi-forest of Nandgaon has countless tales of Lord Krishna had spent his boyhood years along with his foster parents- Nand and Yashoda.

At the entrance of Nandgaon is the

huge statue of Shani Dev. The premier sightseeing spot is the 5,000-year-old Nand Bhawan – the bygone residence of Nand that lies on the hillock of Nandiswar and is a steep climb. Once you climb the Nandiswar hill, navigate your way through the ancient, narrow lane to reach Nand Bhawan. The inner walls of Nand Bhawan are adorned with age-old fresco paintings illustrating Lord Krishna and his brother Balarama with snippets from his formative years. Here darshan of Lord Krishna comes at a price. On the foothills of Nandiswar lies the sacred Pavan Sarovar dotted with fascinating Chhatris. It is essential to know for travellers that Nandgaon lacks basic infrastructure facilities and there are no such decent accommodation centers. Hence travellers are advised to halt in Mathura or Vrindavan.

Tranquil Raval

Regarded as the birthplace of Radha, the traditional hamlet of Raval in Mahavan Tehsil is at a distance of 7 Km from Gokul and about 13 km from Mathura. Raval is in the vicinity of Gokul and the path leading to Raval is less travelled by tourists. There is Radha Rani Devi temple carved of white marble in the interior part of Raval with the highly adorned deity of Radha in sitting posture. This is the only shrine that honours Radha in the form of a child and is looked after by Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad. While in Raval, one feels a sense of bliss. The rustic green ambiance

of Raval with mushrooming of milkweeds has dancing peacocks.

The luxury resort now welcomes Kishan Singh, a culinary veteran who has been with the Four Seasons since 2016, as the resort’s new Head chef.

Germany,

the diverse travel destination, has launched its Autumn/Winter campaign, encouraging travellers to visit, explore, and experience its sustainable and diverse culture. From unspoilt landscapes to authentic cuisine, urban attractions to historical locales, Germany is the ultimate European destination to travel sustainably.

The ‘Feel Good’ campaign encompasses a plethora of guiding tips highlighting the country’s eco initiatives providing conscious travellers with adequate tools and information on reducing their carbon footprint while touring different regions.

With the German Environment Agency having set the goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 per cent by 2030, and complete neutrality by 2045, the German National Tourism Board is consistently supporting this goal through various ongoing initiatives with one of them being the ‘Feel Good’ Campaign.

“Germany will continue to position itself as one of the Indian’s all-time favourite destinations with easy accessibility

and valuable tourism experiences that can cater to all travel desires. For the Indian market, we will focus on creating awareness and offering ecofriendly and sustainable ‘things to do to promote Germany as a responsible and sustainable tourism destination“, said Romit Theophilus, Director the German National Tourist Office, India.

Under the initiative, states and towns are highlighting their innovative transport solutions, pioneering examples of green architecture, and sprawling parks – all of which ensure an exciting city break that can be enjoyed eco-responsibly. Berlin has an abundance of green hotspots including vegan restaurants and alternative events within the city’s urban oasis; Freiburg features a Plusenergy House, which aims to achieve the world’s best energy values for buildings and represents the efficiency standards expected in the future. The tranquil Black Forest in Deidesheim has long been known for being a hub for local food produce and handmade crafts, while Celle recently became a certified sustainable

destination for its eco-friendly initiatives and practices.

“Germany’s ‘Feel Good’ campaign offers the right advice and tips to enjoy sustainability on the move in the country. Not only can travellers reduce their ecological footprint, but they can also calculate their carbon emissions through our CO2 calculator, ensuring their trip is climate neutral and as sustainable as possible.”

In addition to measuring carbon footprint of both air and car journeys using a CO2 calculator by myclimate.org, the ideal partner for effective climate protection, travellers can also sponsor carbon offset programmes in various countries around the world. These include providing cooking stoves for people in Kenya, reforestation assistance for Nicaraguan farmers, and much more. This compensation initiative was created to help positively shape the future of the world while making the trip as climate neutral as possible. Germany has a broad range of other locations and activities also available for travellers.
