DIG INTO KELOWNA'S DEEP ROOTS 1859 Father Pandosy missionaries plant BC's first vineyard 1928 Pioneer Vineyards plants BC's first commercial vineyard – now the site of Tantalus 1932 Calona Wines, BC's first-ever, original winery opens in downtown Kelowna 1961-1972 Gray Monk, Mt. Boucherie, and Quails' Gate plant vineyards 1988 Canada-US Free Trade Agreement attracts winemakers from across the globe to Kelowna 1990 Provincial legislation creates the BC Wine Institute; the VQA appellation is created 1994 Mission Hill wins Canada's first-ever international award – the Avery Trophy for "World's Best Chardonnay" 2020 Kelowna and Central Okanagan is home to more than 40 wineries Arrowleaf Cellars Credit: Shawn Talbot

BC WINE – BORN IN KELOWNA Did you know the BC wine industry was actually born in Kelowna in 1932? Once upon a time in 1931, a visionary named Giuseppe Ghezzi, along with the local Capozzi family, organized a group of investors to create what was later christened Calona Wines Ltd. What is now named Calona Vineyards, is actually BC's first-ever, original winery and is still open in downtown Kelowna. As that brand manifested and expanded, and other wine labels were created across the valley, a small group of visionary winemakers, grape growers, and industry leaders came together in 1990 to create the BC VQA and BC Wine Institute (BCWI). Miles Prodan, President & CEO of the BC Wine Institute says “BC VQA wine would not be what it is today without the incredible vision, collaboration, and determination of our industry.”

HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE BC VINTNERS QUALITY ALLIANCE (VQA) The BC wine industry is still a newbie on the international wine scene, but what has been achieved over a relatively short period of time, is truly remarkable. This year we are celebrating the British Columbia Vintners Quality Alliance (BC VQA) standard created in 1990 to ensure that BC wine was made from 100% locally-grown grapes. The inception of VQA, literally marks the date that BC wine was catapulted into the future of serious winemaking. To honour this milestone year, the Wines of British Columbia are bringing together the pioneers and innovators of the future. Special events, commemorative videos and campaigns are scheduled throughout the year inviting industry, trade, and consumers to celebrate 30 years of BC VQA wine. Visit WineBC.com or tourismkelowna.com for event listings.

The next time you're searching for the perfect wine, look for "BC VQA" on the bottle. That is your guarantee that the wine you'll be sipping is 100% grown and produced in British Columbia.
