Beyond the Big Five: Unique Wildlife Encounters in Africa

When we think of travelling throughout Africa, visiting a game reserve, national park or going on safari, is often the first thing we think of. With the wish or hope of seeing the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) in their natural habitats, being high on most tourists itinerary. However, our beautiful continent is home to an incredible, diverse range, of wildlife that extends far beyond the famous Big Five. Here are some unique wildlife encounters that make Africa a paradise for nature lovers.

1. Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda & Uganda

Arguably one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife experiences in Africa, is trekking through misty forests to see endangered mountain gorillas. In Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Bwindi

Impenetrable Forest, visitors can observe these gentle giants up close in their natural habitat.

2. Whale Sharks in Mozambique

To experience the world’s largest fish, all you need to do is head to the charming, fisherman’s village Tofo Beach on the east coast of Mozambique. Here you can experience the thrill of swimming alongside these gentle giants in crystal-clear waters. For marine wildlife enthusiasts, this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. African Wild Dogs in Zambia, Botswana & South Africa

African wild dogs are rare and highly intelligent predators. They are sometimes referred to as painted wolves, or Cape hunting dogs, and are unfortunately one of the world’s most endangered mammals. African wild dogs are highly successful hunters due to their efficient pack coordination, endurance, and strategic hunting techniques. Their ability to work as a team and their stamina give them an edge in hunting compared to other predators. The best places to see them include Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, as well as at the Vikela Kruger Conservation Experience, Set in the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa where conservation efforts are helping to protect these endangered animals.

4. Pangolins in Namibia & South Africa

The elusive pangolin is one of the hardest animals to spot in Africa. These nocturnal, armour-plated mammals can be found in select reserves in Namibia and South Africa.

To give yourself the best chance of seeing these amazing creatures, try a guided night safaris to increase the chance of a rare sighting.

5. Flamingos in Kenya & Tanzania

If you are lucky enough to visit Lake Nakuru in Kenya or Lake Natron in Tanzania, you will be able to witness thousands of flamingos who turn the landscape pink. These lakes provide a stunning backdrop for birdwatchers and photographers looking for their next African adventure.

6. Lemurs in Madagascar

The island of Madagascar is home to a number of unique wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. One of the most fascinating facts about the island is that it is home to over 100 species of lemurs. From the dancing sifakas to the nocturnal aye-ayes, these primates make a trip to Madagascar an unforgettable adventure.

While the Big Five will forever remain iconic, it is important to remember that Africa offers an abundance of extraordinary wildlife experiences. Whether you are inland, or on the coastline, these encounters provide deeper insight into the continent’s rich biodiversity and showcase just how much Africa has to offer.

Why Every Hotel Needs an Upsell Tool for the Month of Love: A Guide for Hoteliers

As February rolls around, love is definitely in the air. Couples everywhere are looking to escape the everyday hustle and bustle to celebrate their relationship in a memorable way. For hotels, this is a golden opportunity to enhance guest experiences while also boosting revenue. Enter the Trevpar upsell tool—an essential resource that can help hoteliers not just meet expectations, but exceed them during this romantic month.

Maximize Revenue Potential

Let’s be honest: the month of love is lucrative for hotels. Couples are actively searching for the perfect getaway, and they’re often willing to invest in special experiences. An upsell tool makes it easier for hotel staff to suggest delightful extras. Imagine a couple checks in and is offered a romantic room upgrade complete with champagne and chocolates. Or how about a candlelit dinner package at your on-site restaurant? By presenting these attractive options at prime moments before arrival, you can turn a simple reservation into an unforgettable experience, all while directly enhancing your bottom line.

Personalisation is Key

In today’s hospitality landscape, personal touches mean everything. With the right upsell tool, hotels can gather and analyse guest data to craft personalized offers. For instance, if a couple stayed last year and mentioned they loved a specific type of wine, your upsell tool could alert your staff to offer a tailored “wine and cheese” package during their next stay. Those personalized experiences not only make guests feel cherished but also encourage them to return time and again.

Elevate the Guest Experience

Creating memorable experiences is at the heart of hospitality, and giving guests the option to book extras before their arrival can greatly enhance their stay. Imagine this: a couple plans their romantic getaway and has the opportunity to customize their experience in advance. With a simple click on our system, they can choose from curated romantic packages that include options like in-room rose petal arrangements, a chilled bottle of wine, spa treatments for couples, or a private candlelit dinner.

By allowing guests to pre-book these thoughtful touches, you not only enhance their anticipation and excitement but also ensure that everything is perfectly arranged for them upon arrival. This ability to personalize their experience helps transform an ordinary stay into something truly magical, creating cherished memories that they’ll be eager to share long after their departure. Empowering guests to make these choices ahead of time not only boosts their satisfaction but also drives additional revenue for your hotel.

Ease of Use for Your Team

One of the best aspects of modern upsell tools is how user-friendly they are. Many integrate smoothly with existing property management systems, allowing your staff to access guest information and suggest relevant upsells effortlessly. With minimal training, your team can confidently accept or reject upgrades before check-in or when guests inquire about services. This ease of use means that upselling feels like a natural part of your service rather than a forced sales tactic.

Build Lasting Relationships

Successful upselling isn’t just about making a one-time sale; it’s about building relationships. When guests feel valued and catered to, they’re more likely to return and recommend your hotel to others. By enhancing their stay through thoughtful upsells and personalized service, you’re not just giving them a place to stay—you’re creating a home away from home. It’s these small gestures that turn first-time visitors into loyal customers.

Monitor and Refine Your Success

An effective upsell tool provides valuable insights into your performance. You can track metrics such as conversion rates for upsell offers and the types of packages that resonate most with guests. This data allows you to refine your strategy continuously, ensuring that you’re always one step ahead. For instance, if you find that couples love your spa packages, you can highlight those more prominently in your offerings during the month of love and beyond.

Conclusion

In conclusion, embracing an upsell tool is essential for any hotel looking to thrive during the month of love. Not only can it significantly boost revenue, but it can enhance the overall guest experience in ways that lead to satisfaction and loyalty. As you prepare for this romantic season, think about how you can leverage upselling to create unforgettable moments for your guests. After all, love is about connection—and what better way to connect with your guests than by making their stay as special as the one they’re celebrating?

This Valentine’s Day, let your hotel be the destination for lovebirds—and watch both your guest satisfaction and profits soar!

For those seeking a more off-the-beatenpath adventure, the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania offers an unspoiled wilderness experience. As one of the largest faunal reserves in the world, Selous is far less crowded than many of the other national parks and game reserves, providing a tranquil setting that is able to be explored by boat, on foot, or in a 4x4.
