rossland, bc the powder highway starts here! your 2015 escape guide

rossland, b.c. punching above our weight

since 1896 Gold got ‘em here. And the Kootenays kept ‘em here… When gold-crazy miners struck pay dirt here in the late 1800s, they couldn’t have possibly known what would be “left in the pan” by 2014. But their grit, courage, and resourcefulness set the tone for the town to come. And, thanks to them, Rossland remains real in an era of artifice. It might not be as rowdy as the Rossland of 1896 with its 42 saloons and 21 brothels, but this place has a pulse. You can feel it on the street, in the shops, or in the grocery store. It hits you as soon as you step out of your car. The hard-as-hobnails miners with pick axes over their shoulders have simply been replaced by hardcore fun-seekers with fat skis or DH mountain bikes over their shoulders. It’s true many of them still have massive beards but, rest assured, the vibe is more “bro” than “brothel” heading into 2014. Modern-day Rossland is that rare beast: A place of small town charm and big, big ideas. A real municipality at the base of a world-class ski resort. An historic downtown core with all mod cons, from gourmet espresso to book stores. And all of it is held together by the famously friendly locals and their commitment to making sure that Canadian Hospitality still means something, whether you’re traveling as a family or on a solo powder pilgrimage.

serious business around here

RED Mountain is the last great, unspoiled resort. Located along the famous Powder Highway, RED delivers 2,877 lift-serviced acres (4,200 total!) of pristine skiing unfettered by overdevelopment. With epic vertical (2,919 ft/890m!), in-bounds cat-skiing, wide-open groomers, 360-degree descents, a rich tradition, and—phew!—the BEST gladed tree runs in North America, it’s no wonder The New York Times voted us their #8 “Best Place in the World to Visit in 2013.” Other accolades include #1 in Powder Magazine’s “Ski Town Throwdown,” and “Most Underrated Resort” by Skiing. [Buffs fingernails on shirt.] The only thing piling up faster than our international accolades is our famous powder: 300 inches (7.6m) of the stuff per season. We pride ourselves on fresh turns that you don’t have to fight for. And, for a measly $10 per run, you can even make your own tracks via our famous inbounds cat-skiing, now located on rugged Mt. Kirkup, a ‘14/15 expansion that adds an additional 195 acres to the 1,000 acres we added last year on Grey Mountain (see facing page). RED provides an authentic Canadian mountain experience that will create memories guaranteed to last a lot longer than your last Facebook post.

It’s the full vacation package: Everything you need. Nothing you don’t. redresort.com

red’s expansion fifty shades of grey (mountain, that is)

Brand-new terrain ringing in at nearly 1,000 acres. 360-degree skiing off the top. 22 new runs. A new peak. A new lift installed. A new restaurant where you can, like, install a new ketchup stain on your $500 jacket. RED’s 2013/14 expansion to Grey Mountain means more of everything you love, plus a massive increase in Intermediate terrain for families and mixed-skill groups. For 2015, we’ve performed extensive summer glading and manicuring to clean up this new terrain and really make it shine. Game changer? Definitely. This marks one of the largest expansions of an existing resort in North America in four decades (!) and places RED firmly in the scale of destinations such as Breckenridge. This bumps the “local legend” into the Top 20 of ALL North American resorts in terms of terrain scale— while maintaining its position as #1 in pow aficionados’ hearts. With 2,919 feet of vertical on offer from the top of Granite and 2,000 feet of vert off the new peak on Grey, it’s no wonder The New York Times voted our little “borough” their “#8 Place to Visit in 2013,” citing the über-expansion as a true tipping point: “Suddenly Red’s trail map will stretch as wide as Jackson Hole’s inbounds terrain. With a new Iodge and the first on-hill accommodations added in the last few years, this Iocal legend is ready to step out into the spotlight.” —NYT

bigger than some small countries. Rossland’s Big Red Cats is the world’s largest cat skiing operation. Not only are there 8 peaks at BRC’s disposal, there are almost 20,000 acres of the best tree skiing, glades and pillow lines in the world. With BRC you can explore the vast backcountry with a cat-full of stoked riders sharing your ability: Intermediate, Advanced, Expert or, occasionally, Über-expert. Yeah, that’s right: Über-expert. Big Red Cats runs four cats a day on over 220km of snowcat road accessing

over 500 named runs. The PB300’s snowcats are fast and smooth and get you to the top in style. Safety is BRC’s #1 concern and guides have CSGA, ACMG or international equivalent qualifications and are trained by the Canadian Avalanche Association. BRC exceeds industry operating standards for safety and even employs a full-time snow safety team. But fun is what it’s all about! The Big Red Crew loves exploring the backcountry, and nearly every day someone tells them that it was the best day of skiing in their life. Book one day, six days, or alternate with resort skiing. Because you’re staying right at a world-class ski resort, you can mix your cat skiing with resort days, have some group members cat ski while others are at the resort. Everyone has a riot and everyone goes home happy. So, if you like world-class gladed skiing, unspoiled powder, and sharing the vast backcountry with only a handful of lucky “co-shredders,” cat skiing should be right at the top of your list. bigredcatskiing.com

FOOD & drink Pre-après & post-après

are NOT the same as “dinner”

Whether you were baptized with a burger in-hand or lean more toward grilled baby leeks glazed with white truffle oil, Rossland’s restaurants are sure to satisfy. Gourmet pizza at Misty Mountain? Check. Pub food on a pedestal in Redstone Golf Resort’s 86 year-old log clubhouse? Fore! Sit-down Italian at Gabriella’s? Sì! Life changing nachos for après at Rafters? Burp. Exotic ingredients and decadent desserts at Idgies? Hey, that’s mine! Food, fun and cold ones at The Flying Steamshovel, one of BC’s oldest pubs (dating back to the Gold Rush)? Hells yes! Cook your own back at the condo with ingredients from Ferraro Foods, our gourmet grocery? Paper or plastic, miss? Scratch craft beers at Rossland Brewing Company? Cheers -- and please put your toque back on! Rossland’s amazing four-season lifestyle offerings have all but guaranteed that entrepreneurial gourmets, chefs, brewers and coffee heads move here and set up shop. And, well, let’s just say that it was all part of our master plan...#mischievouslaughter #whatsahashtag #rosslandrules #hashtagsareannoyingarentthey

boutique shopping fill your boots

(or just get them fitted) For some folks (who shall go nameless), a ski holiday is simply a great excuse to go shopping. At least now we understand why so many large pockets on that giant ski bag were left strategically empty… Rossland’s independent spirit is perfectly reflected in the shop windows lining our historic streets: No Big Box stores here. Nor will you find obnoxious luxury boutiques selling those weird jewel-encrusted eggs or any other jet-set nonsense. You’ll score items that you’ve never seen before, from infant onesies to top-of-the-line Gore-Tex onesies for grownups. Shop for shoes at The Red Pair, local artisanal work at Legacy Gift Room & Brew Shop, foodie-caliber dog chow at Tails, a new shred stick at RossVegas Boardshop, handcrafted apparel at The Cellar — and then get your second wind at one of Rossland’s awesome coffee shops. (We’ve done studies and a large latte will enable you to shop for exactly 2.5 more hours.) If it’s your sports gear that needs upgrading or tweaking, know that Rossland’s wizards, such as Powderhound and Revolution, can sort you out in ways you never thought possible. They live, eat and breathe mountain sports so they know what works best, regardless of budget. Get your boots fitted or yourself kitted right out, from goggles to gewgaws.

ALL ACCESS! If you’re new to RED, all of these potential runs and lines can be a little overwhelming. Don’t fret! No matter which adventure you choose –- hit up the Paradise face (inset A); fly down into Granite Bowl (inset B); take to the front near Motherlode; or head over to the new Grey Mountain chair -– you’ll always find a cat track at the end guiding you back toward a lift to do it all over again.

that’s not all, folks! one area. many uses. The new multi-use area at the base of Grey and Kirkup mountains means more fun for everyone. From informal XC skiing, to snowshoeing, to orienteering to your own take on Thoreau, this new zone is yours for interpretation, winter or summer. Enjoy the spectacular views and, as we develop the trail system, increased connectivity with town, existing trails, and RED Mountain Resort. Say “infrastructure” if you must, but please don’t start dropping “synergy” on us just yet...

srsly great outdoors Rossland is Canada’s Mountain Biking Capital so, yes, we do have a single track mind, thanks very much. With over 200 kms of maintained single track ranging from flat to double-black — and a profusion of off-book opportunities and obstacles deep in the woods — this is an area where even the suit-and-tie set knows how to get muddy. (“Six inches of travel” could be a little or a lot, depending on the scale of your map and/or mind…) Rossland also offers incredible opportunities for road biking, golf, disc golf, fishing, swimming, tennis, hiking, whitewater rafting, and just plain ol’ “breathing fresh air while looking at mountains.” (Try it. We think you’ll like it.) silver
