ROSSLAND ESCAPE GUIDE ADVENTURE AWAITS

DISCOVER — YOURS ROSSLAND British Columbia, Canada

IT’S ROSSLAND, NOT ROSSVILLE

T

HEY MIGHT NOT have known, but they suspected something… They found themselves tripping over old chestnuts like, “there’s something in the air here.” This gold mining settlement needed a name, gawd-dangit, but what name could possibly embrace this feeling they all had as they peered up at noble peaks or dipped dented tin mugs into the cold, clear creeks?

Tendencies for toponyms in the 1800s were to honour prominent local figures: entrepreneurs, early officials, rich dudes, scary dudes etc. Sometimes the name stood alone as the town name, as is the case with Vancouver, B.C. or, perhaps more oddly, Boring, MD. Often, they’d take the surname of said prominent figure and add “-ville” or “-borough” to his name. (Yeah, always men…) Ross Thompson staked his claim here in around 1890 and eventually tried to call the town “Thompson” but was told, not surprisingly, that this one was already taken. Bummer. So, first name then… But why Rossland not Rossville? This was no country. It sounded so cocky, so grandiose.

OSSLAND, like Vineland in Norse mythology (or Portlandia in pop-cultural mythology) gets a “land” because, well, it deserves a “land.” To earn your “land” requires shared values, a desire to stand out in a sea of sameness. Back then they were miners and bankers, shysters and snake oil merchants, hardliving bon vivants and pious pioneers set on carving out a life—not just a living—from these ruthlessly beautiful Canadian mountains. The ground was full of gold and the sky full of possibility. “Why the heck not?” they might have said ‘round their cook fires. “As good a place as any…” It turned out to be better than “as good a place as any.” Much better. This was a small spot on an ever-expanding globe where an honest day’s work meant an honest day’s pay; a place where like-minded souls could look up from their work now and again to see something worth seeing: aspens glowing gold in October; a fish jumping two feet out of the water just for fun. Whether they came from Oslo or Spokane, Quebec or Kilmarnock, settlers to this special slice of earth felt an invisible pull telling them to put down roots, to start writing their own adventure: right here, right now. “Rossville” would be a fine name for a town, a worthy honorarium from Ross Thompson to…himself. But this place needed a name that whispered to like-minded souls, “We’ve got a good thing going on in these mountains.” RossLAND would be that name. And it would serve as a clarion call to true adventurers, men and women who could get down and dirty when necessary and still clean up good for church or what-have-you:

THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE LIKE THIS ON EARTH

YS COURTESY LOST KOOTENA

“Only hardy souls need apply. Bring sense of humour. Pack your whole personality.”

FLETT

Rossland c.1960s

Rossland today is still earning its “land” with an unprecedented array of adventure options for modern pioneers who might think that pick axes are cabin decor and mules a kind of women’s shoe. So why not stay and find out what these pioneers figured out 125 years ago: There is no other place like this on earth.

SINGLE TRACK MINDS…

M

OUNTAIN BIKERS are a funny lot — and there are a lot of them in Rossland for a reason. In fact, little ol’ Rossland is the “Mountain Biking Capital of Canada.” It’s not unusual for some locals to own $5,000 bikes while driving $500 cars, so please, don’t question their priorities. They know what they’re doing.

Our trail system is a real point of pride around here and it connects 200 kilometres of mountain bike action seamlessly. Trail maintenance is performed regularly by a full-time professional trails crew. From the kidfriendly Centennial to pump ’n’ swoop on Technogrind to the radical rock slabs of Sudden Exposure, we’ve got the entire spectrum of fun on a bike covered, from green to double-black. Killer cross-country, free-ride and downhill are on offer.

JONES

A mountain bike is also a great way to take in more views in less time than hiking. Trails like Cemetery allow you to see a deciduous forest up close and personal while a bit of climbing on Kootenay Columbia — or a bit more climbing on Redtop — will open up vistas that might blow that full-face helmet right off. These two-wheeled steeds are called mountain bikes for a reason and there’s no better place to get yours muddy than right here in Rossland, whether it’s on an old rail spur or dodging conifers with nary another human in sight. You can even rent a fat bike for those deep winter days and go anywhere.

6

Make new friends on a group ride and take advantage of daily shuttles. The fittest riders should take note that Rossland is home to an International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) “Epic”: the Seven Summits Trail. This is definite bucket-list material and it’s a 35 kilometre, point-to-point trail that’s well-maintained, challenging, technical, and blessed with views that automobile drivers will simply never get to see.

ROAD BIKING

BIG GEARS. BIGGER VIEWS

W

E MIGHT BE more famous for our mountain biking here, but ask any of the hardcore roadies ’round Rossland and they’ll tell you what you’re hoping to hear anyway: You just made it to skinny-tire heaven, my friend.

Escape the traffic of the big city and find out what those big gears are really for. Whether you prefer our quad-burning, lung-busting climbs or passing sports cars on technical, switchback-laden downhills, Kootenay climbs always come with a payoff. Our stomping ground is like a more user-friendly Tour de France: Satisfying climbs on winding roads. Tight corners that open up to storybook views. No altitude issues. (No attitude issues, either.) Pure, delicious tap water. And the real “yellow jersey” — a steady supply of organic bananas courtesy of the gourmet grocery store in town. So blow that city soot out of your pipes and turn down the traffic. And, if you need tubes, tools, leg razors or some better shorts to do away with those saddle-sores, Rossland-area bike shops are a roadie gold mine — with the right gear at the right price and insider tips on rides.

BIKEPACKING YEAH, IT’S A WORD

A

T THE POINT where mountain biking and minimalist camping meet, you’ll find this beautiful chimera, bikepacking. The West Kootenay is uniquely suited to this new adventure. The Columbia and Western Rail Trail (CWRT), in particular, is a world-class ride on an abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway line. As part of a major bikepacking mission, easy day trip with hot showers on the horizon, or connection to the famous Kettle Valley Railway, this extraordinary trail is reason enough to visit our fine part of the province with your trusty two-wheeled steed. It is free to ride and guiding is available for a reasonable fee. Play your cards right and it can actually be downhill both ways.

FLETT

In toto, the CWRT covers 162 kilometres from Castlegar to Midway, B.C. and opens up views that haven’t been seen by train since the last one chugged through in 1991. This gorgeous, well-maintained trail will take you over dizzying trestles, past the pristine Arrow Lakes Pick up a and through hand-dug rock tunnels that are dark copy of the Columbia even in daylight, giving you a taste of our history & Western that will linger long after your muscle soreness Trail Map at outdoor shops subsides. The CWRT is part of the Trans Canada in Rossland. Trail, the world’s longest network of trails.

Gerick Sports Gerick’s sells and services sporting goods for both winter and summer sports in the Kootenays. In the winter we have Nordic skis, Alpine skis, Hockey, Snowshoes and much more. In the summer we carry a wide variety of bikes from road to mountain, kids to S-Works. We also have hiking gear, paddle boards, running shoes, racket sports, soccer, baseball and more. We are backed by a full-service shop and welcome any make and model of bike, ski or snowboard. Stop by for trail recommendations, to see the latest gear, or just talk. We pride ourselves on having unparalleled customer service! Come have some fun.

HOT ON THE TRAIL

T

HEY COME IN chunky lug-soled hiking boots with bright red laces. They come in state-of-the-art trail runners and in those funny “foot gloves” that make their lower appendages look like monkey feet. Some brave souls do it barefoot. But ninjaminimalist or maxi-clunk old-school, hikers and trail runners are in for a treat when they get a load of our worldclass trails. There’s gold in them thar hills.

More adventurous groups can tackle a hike like Red Top before lunch or spend all day gaining altitude on Old Glory. Nothing brings a family closer than leaving the rest of the world way down there. Rossland’s hardcore trail runners live here because they are like ascetic mountain bikers, using their feet for tires and their knees as suspension. Pounding the pavement is great and all but nothing beats scrambling over knotty 500-year-old tree roots through a switchback forest that opens up on a vista that is as wild now as it was when that tree was still a pine cone. Knock out a quick 5 km loop before breakfast or fill that CamelBak right to the top and tackle the legendary Seven Summits Trail, home of the Broken Goat 50 km Ultra Race.

FLETT

Families with young children can pick from a number of leisurely trails with no big climbs and lots of places to stop, every hundred feet or so, for a snack or to dump out an entire day pack’s contents for no apparent reason. And then maybe cry for a bit…

GOLFING

BE THE PLAYER

C

ANADA’S ALPINE golf courses are some of the most gorgeous places to play in the world, with challenging holes and views that can rival even California’s “calendar holes.” Follow your drive ball’s flight and you might catch a view of a kestrel or redtailed hawk getting out of the way. Fore!

Rossland boasts an outstanding 18-hole Les Furber Signature course right in town and a keen golfer could play a different course for a week straight with minimal driving (off-course, that is). From family-friendly niners to club-busting championship courses, the Kootenays are golf’s best-kept secret and our courses are a leisurely way to soak in all of our excess natural beauty. (We won’t tell if you don’t…) By basing yourself in Rossland for a golf holiday, duffer or deluxe, you get all this and can enjoy pleasant alpine temperatures in summer that are warm but not hot. (We never want to see you jumping into a water hazard again.)

Kootenay Golf and Adventure Trail Discover Golf in the Kootenays with 7 great courses! Set among the towering mountain ranges, shimmering lakes and pristine valleys of the southeastern corner of British Columbia. Balfour, Castlegar, Christina Lake, Granite Pointe, Kokanee Springs, Redstone and Birchbank offer a memorable and affordable golf experience waiting to be discovered. www.kootenaygolftrail.com info@kootenaygolftrail.com 12

Redstone Resort Open from April 15th to October 31st, the Redstone Golf Course is ranked as one of the best Mountain Golf Courses in British Columbia. Sure, Redstone has great views, stunning greens and an incredible layout, but it’s the “fun factor” that sets it apart. Every golf hole is different. Twisting and turning through the Trail Creek valley, the golfer must think about where to play the next shot from, rather than just teeing it up and swinging away. Playing the course is fun, but it’s the people that set it apart. Locals at Redstone are more than happy to play with guests, and if you’re not careful you may end up making a new friend for life. Sean Noble of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota said it best. “I golfed a round at Redstone and it was the most intimate golf experience of my life.” Call 250 362-9141 and book your next round at Redstone.

DISC GOLF

CHAIN REACTIONS

T

RADITIONAL GOLF often looks down its collective nose at disc golf—but is whacking a ball with a stick truly more noble than chucking a frisbee into a basket made of chains? No, we think not.

See, disc golf might be considered “fringe” in some spots but, ’round here, it’s as regular as, like, curling or ringette. With the best 18-hole disc golf course in the Kootenays (all baskets!) and FREE playing and parking, all you need to pack is your trail runners, your discs and some oblique subcultural slang. Fun is all but guaranteed in this safe, easy-going sport that’s fun for the “hole” family. Doink! Located at the Black Jack Nordic Centre.

Rossland Recreation Recreation, education, culture! Facilities and programs include an outdoor swimming pool, arena, curling rink, bike skills parks, hundreds of kilometres of trails around Rossland, four neighburhood parks and playspaces, outdoor tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, public skating, swimming lessons, aquatic courses and programs for preschool, youth, adults and seniors. www.rossland.ca, recreation@rossland.ca City Hall, 1899 Columbia Ave., Rossland 250.362.2327 14

WATER YOU TALKING ABOUT?

FF-SEASON is ON-SEASON when it comes to enjoying the clear, clean H2O of the Kootenays. Nearby we have whitewater that ranges from “six-pack and a stolen inner tube” to fully-guided raft trips on the Slocan to kayaking or river surfing in the Columbia’s standing wave. You can dust off that SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) and get it wet at Christina Lake or wet a line looking for your future fish tale. With our small population and high environmental standards, refreshing swimming, boating, and floating options abound and you won’t have to worry about your relaxing paddle turning into Bumper Boats.

For family fun, nearby Trail boasts an aquatic center and a splash ’n’ spray for kiddos at Gyro Park, down by the river. Whether you’re picnicking at Nancy Greene Lake or busting out the boat and water skis at Christina Lake, our region is an embarrassment of riches in the water department. And don’t forget your PFD and SPF.

ARTS & CULTURE

RENAISSANCE TOWN

W

ATCHING ROSSLAND on a crisp fall day might make your inner artist twitch as the mixed forest around town explodes in a riot of colour. And it’ll come as no surprise that many world-class artists call these Kootenays home. Oil on canvas, fused glass, contemporary realist, abstract… they all come here to un-cage their minds and set their imaginations free. Pick up a one-of-a-kind piece at a great price in one of our galleries or bring your own easel and paints.

The Rossland Arts Council and Trail & District Arts Council make sure that culture vultures never have to snack on anything stale. And if you’re more into theatrical pursuits, look into the Gold Fever Follies and/or Rossland Light Opera Players putting up shows every year.

BACK IN THE DAY

S

A trip to the five-acre Rossland Museum, a Site of National Historical Significance, will let you peruse photos and artifacts from this rich history and even try your hand at a bit of gold panning.

Our modern “gold” might come in the form of powder, single-track or craft beer but we are exceptionally proud of our history and love

If you’d like to learn more about how Rossland cut her teeth as a town, we highly suggest devoting an hour of your first day here to the free, self-guided walking tour. (Or, if you want to be really modern, watch the historic walking tour online on your historic laptop.)

AY WHAT YOU WILL about IPOs and tech bubbles and the touted “Information Economy,” but the Gold Rush was cooler. Way cooler. Folks in the 1800s didn’t sit in mom’s basement learning Python and C++ and dreaming up new ways to monetize cat memes… No, sir. They heard a rumour about a lucky strike and showed up, ready to dig, get dirty, get rich. Some of them even did. Few areas in the modern West have maintained a connection to their founding myths quite like Rossland. Columbia Avenue looks much the same today as it did a century ago, even if you’re less likely to step in horse poop and more likely to get flattened by a Prius.

EVENTS CALENDAR

T

HE SPECIAL EVENT calendar around Rossland is surprisingly diverse for a city this size. We have the longest-running Winter Carnival in Canada that is as offbeat and unpredictable as our locals. We have a film festival, a craft beer festival, and top-secret tango guild. Rossland’s four-season joie de vivre is a natural outgrowth of the type of people our town attracts in the first place: work hard/play hard, wonderful weirdos, artsy athletes, fun families, colourful characters. KIING ON RED MOUNTAIN often marks a visitor’s first experience with the Rossland area. And nothing could be a better representation of what the Kootenays are really about:

With 300"/7.6m of annual snowfall, wide-open groomers, epic vertical (2,919ft/890m!), in-bounds cat-skiing ($10/run!), 360-degree descents, a rich tradition, and – phew! — the BEST tree runs in B.C., it’s no wonder the New York Times voted RED and Rossland “#8 Best Place in the World to Visit in 2013.” Other accolades include #1 in Powder magazine’s “Ski Town Throwdown,” and “Most Underrated Resort” by Skiing. Brand-new terrain on Grey Mountain ringing in at nearly 1,000 acres. Twenty-two new runs. A new lift installed. A new eatery where you can, like, install a new ketchup stain on your $500 jacket… The expansion to Grey means more of everything you love, plus a massive increase in Intermediate terrain for families and mixed-skill groups. This recent expansion bumps the “local legend” into the Top 20 of all North American resorts in terms of terrain scale — while maintaining its position as #1 in pow aficionados’ hearts. Add to this the new four-season Adventure Centre with fat bike rentals as well as lessons and guides for every sport under the sun, and “Where should we go honey?” starts sounding like a silly question indeed…

OFF PISTE

R

OSSLAND’S BIG RED CATS is one of the world’s largest CAT SKIING operations. Not only are there eight peaks at BRC’s disposal, there are almost 20,000 acres of the best tree skiing, glades and pillow lines in the world. With Big Red Cats you can safely explore the vast, beautiful backcountry with a cat-full of stoked riders sharing your ability: Intermediate, Advanced, Expert or, occasionally, Über-expert. Yeah, that’s right: Über-expert. For shredders who like to earn their turns and ditch other people faster than unsolicited phone calls, RED Mountain is uniquely blessed as a jumping-off point for BACKCOUNTRY adventures. With five stellar peaks within walking distance and enough terrain variety and challenge for even the crustiest split-boarders and free-heelers, this region is truly blessed. Our area also offers unique topography for “car drop” ski touring (aka “powder commuting”) where you can ski down to the highway and shuttle back up without even breaking a sweat. The 16 cabins scattered around Strawberry Pass are quintessential Kootenays. These stylish, funky cabins were built by locals on Crown land and are only for day use. Ever-popular with outdoorsy local families, you’ll often see three generations of snow-sliders eating a bag lunch or firing up the wood stove in these special shelters.

FLETT

If you ask us, SNOWSHOEING is one of the most underrated sports of all time. And, if you want to snowshoe up a mellow side-slope or on a more challenging trail, rentals are readily available. It’s very easy to learn with the new-style snowshoes but you can still wear that dope faux-fur hat. In fact you should.

trail map Aside from RED’s marked runs, there’s endless natural tree stashes, bottomless bowls, squirrel shortcuts, powder pillows and the like. At its best, this natural terrain compares to what you might experience heli-skiing. You see, RED is blessed with a unique topography that allows 360-degree descents off Granite Mountain and ~270-degree access off the top of Red and Grey Mountain. Being able to descend so many different facets off the top means considerably more skiable acres per lift versus resorts with only a “front side” and/or “back side.” It spreads out the skiers and riders and allows you to find your own lines, making the most of the day’s snow, sun, and fun.

ITHIN A double-double’s drive are several other communities almost as cool as Rossland. Almost. If you can’t find it here, chances are you can find it in one of these three West Kootenay beauties.

TRAIL: The mighty Columbia river running through Trail could tell some stories, sonny boy… The river is the heart of this city that offers innovative industry and lifestyle including incredible award-winning floral displays, an aquatic centre, a water park, a hospital, and more. You’ll fit right in and enjoy great museums, a youthful vibe, and every sport you’ve ever heard of right out the back door.

BOUTIQUE SHOPPING

INDEPENDENTLY CHARMING

R

As you might imagine, all things “sport” are well-represented in Rossland, from soft shell jackets to keep the elements off your hide to new forks for your bike. But the domestic romantic will find no shortage of wares in our locally-owned shops either, from gourmet kitchen supplies to sumptuous down duvets and handmade chocolates.

FLETT

CONWAY

Keep in mind that, as of print time, the incredible US Dollar/Canadian Dollar exchange rate (+/- 30%) was such that shopping here is akin to legal shoplifting. It’d be immoral not to pick up a few things… criminal almost! Do the right thing.

PEACHELL

OSSLAND’S NOT LIKE some resort towns where the “town” feels more like a “strip mall.” No, this is the real deal with many independent boutique shops you can’t find anywhere else on earth. Many are part of a leisurely stroll down historic Columbia Avenue, so you can leave the car at the hotel and only go get it if you find something too big to carry. (Hey, it happens…)

DINING & NIGHTLIFE

HIGH CALIBRE Say you’re an up-and-coming young chef with a serious singletrack bug. Or you’re a well-seasoned crusty old chef who has worked in every big city hotel and kitchen worth Yelping about, and you want to escape the rat race. What do you do? You open a smaller, more sustainable restaurant in the Kootenays with incredible local ingredients, a young staff that can push you out on the trails, and a lifestyle that is the envy of all your old colleagues in NYC, Toronto, or LA. You snowboard four mornings a week in the winter and ride your mountain bike to work every day, surrounded by wild Canadian nature, organic gardens, and people who truly love where they live. That’s why we are starting to have so many killer restaurants in Rossland. We sincerely hope this trend continues.

Our nightlife goes beyond the pitchers ’n’ nachos standard, too — though pitchers ’n’ nachos are a staple we pray never goes away. World-class musicians and DJs play here regularly and a good time is never very hard to find. Dance. Drink. Share a glass of the local vintage from the winery down in the valley, a dessert you’ll never forget or a one-off beer in our craft brewery. We live life to the fullest and we’ll fill your glass right to the brim with Canadian spirit.

REAL RELAXATION

M

AYBE MISSY ELLIOTT sang it best: If you a fly gal, get your nails done / Get a pedicure, get your hair did.

Visiting Rossland, we know you might be more interested in the “mud facials” you receive riding through hub-deep puddles on your bike, but a trip to one of our region’s fine spas or salons will be sure to leave you with that “sporty glow” you desire.

38

ROSSLAND ESCAPE GUIDE 2017 | tourismrossland.com

Know this: The spa and salon equation goes well past the mani-pedi in Rossland, with everything you might be craving, body or soul. From Pilates to massage therapy, yoga to yin-yang restorative acupuncture, you’ll be blown away at the variety on offer for a small town. We even boast an organic, chemical-free hair salon and a “big city haircut” is as easy to find here as a free parking spot. So get that “hair did” and let the natural beauty of the Kootenays shine through you.

ACCOMMODATIONS

M

ODERN CANADIAN HOSPITALITY grew out of necessity. Many (other) areas of the country have brutal winters and sparse populations so, in the olden days, welcoming a stranger in could be a matter of life and death. Now that we all have GoreTex and heated seats and protein bars and espresso on every corner it’s less of an issue, but that warm tradition lives on in Rossland whether you stay in a deluxe hotel, stylish motel, B&B, condo, or your Uncle Garry’s goat barn. And, while we actually have one of the most pleasant climates in Canada, we’ll still welcome you in like it’s the days of the Gold Rush and your fingers are falling off from frostbite. We might even ask you to catch your own dinner for old time’s sake. Where you stay can influence how you play, so take a close look at Rossland’s many accommodation options in the pages that follow

From mountain-bike-friendly options with safe space for all your spendy gear to ultra-civilized B&Bs more focused on relaxing conversation, good books and hot baths, we are confident that our area boasts a perfect place for you and/or your group. One person in the tub at a time, please... Before You Even Ask: Yes, most of our accommodations have wireless but we’ve found that people are often less fascinated by their phones once they get to the Kootenays and look around. RELOCATION

ECOND HOMES have a habit of becoming first homes around here… See, adventurous families buy a cabin or condo as an investment, planning on using it “only occasionally” until it sells. And then they forget to list it. And then they start coming twice a year. And then four times a year. And then their kids are going to school here and dropping “toque” and “zed” and “twoonie” like they’re actually words.

AMAN TEA

PUTTING THE REAL BACK IN REAL ESTATE

The value on offer in this part of the Kootenays is incredible for a marquee four-season destination. In-cre-di-ble. Current fluctuations in the exchange rate on the US Dollar (USD) make good deals great (+/- 30% at press time.) We are confident that no other area in the world offers the residential-recreational value represented by Rossland. (Man, that’s a lot of “R’s”… But if you’re needing some R ’n’ R, you are looking in the right place.) Rossland is a great place to invest, too. Opportunities abound for savvy entrepreneurs. And jobs are continually on offer in major industries such as healthcare, education, tourism, metallurgy, engineering, software and energy transmission. Whether starting your career and family or tapering that “5-to-9” schedule off and encouraging your grown children to move out already, Rossland speaks your language. You have no idea…

NOW GET OUTTA HERE! HEY COME HERE from paved cities to get their shiny new mountain bikes dirty, once and for all. They come here to hike through alpine wildflowers and dunk their heads into a cold creek. Some of them come here to do nothing at all, surrounded by Canadian nature at its finest.

Rossland’s a 3-D destination, so it can make much of the competition look flat by comparison. This is because this is a real town with schools and history and a mayor and stuff, not some fly-by-night recreational paradise. Some of our families have had their surnames in the phone book since, well, people cared

about phone books. Some came here to attend their best friend’s third wedding and ended up buying a second home with mountains in every window and trails right out the back door. Some have yet to discover what makes Rossland special — but it wouldn’t be special if it was common knowledge, now would it? So get up here. Explore at your own pace. Forget “doing it all” because there’s a LOT to do. Actually, forget doing anything if you prefer peace and quiet to adrenaline surges. Ride a horse. Ride a bike. Ride a golf cart. Ride a bar stool. We won’t judge. Just get up here and stay long enough to let all that special seep in.

City of Rossland Welcome to Rossland, a four-season recreational paradise. Please stay and enjoy our City’s warm, friendly hospitality.
