Todd Brandt President and CEO, Tourism Saskatoon Visitors like you often tell me that it is hard to put a finger on why they enjoyed their time in Saskatoon. It might have been one special event, or a visit to an attraction, or a collection of activities such as a dinner out, a walk along the riverbank and a little live music or theatre. I think the answer is our people. There are many great destinations in this country with wonderful experiences, but as visitors increasingly want to feel the heart and life of a community, they need to interact with those that live here. It speaks to the essence of our brand “Local Treasures – Openly Shared”. Wave at a local and they will smile and wave back. Ask a question and you will get a story in response. Share a bench and you might just make a friend for life. Share the story of your visit with us – better yet – share it with others too!

4 SEASON ADVENTURE BY JONATHAN STOREY
My first thought was, this will be easy, I've spent so much time enjoying the outdoors here. I figured I'd describe a sunny day paddling, biking, and exploring the city's parks and restaurants. But when I sat down to write this at the end of October, we'd already had our first snowfall and cold temperatures! No matter the conditions, here are my four-season suggestions for adventure in Saskatoon. colourful Autumn Afternoon

Meet Jonathan
(Cool morning, but warms to 20C in the afternoon) Sunny fall days might very well be my favourite days of the year. While it’s common for people to get sad about the end of summer, I have found there are so many fantastic days that we get in September and October. Visiting any of Saskatoon’s parks, I am greeted with the amazing colours and smells of autumn. Wanting to take full advantage of this I have made some calls and lined up an afternoon in Buena Vista park with family and friends. This park is home to more species of trees than I can count, it’s a special place to visit. We set up a home
Jonathan was born in Saskatoon and spent most of his childhood climbing trees, rigging rope swings, tipping canoes…good fun for curious kids. This later became paddling, rock climbing, and learning to ride a unicycle. After an unsuccessful attempt to stay focused long enough to complete a university degree, he teamed up with his brother Marcus in 2004 to start Escape Sports. This opened up a whole new world of fun: Kiteboarding, river surfing, Onewheeling!
base of blankets and picnic fixings, and then begin the activities. Slacklining, Spikeball, tossing frisbee, Bocce ball… there is even a sweet little bicycle pump track at the park that the kids are loving! Later on we lay back and turn our eyes on the skies hoping to catch a shooting star, or better yet a show of Northern Lights!
A Winter's Day (-15C and cloudy skies) I try to use as many alternate modes of transportation to cars that I can find in the winter – the more fun, the better! I like to take the kids to school by kicksled. Very popular in Scandinavia, kicksleds are basically a chair mounted on runners and kicked like a scooter. Simple, effective and lots of fun with the kids sitting up front as we glide to school. After dropping them off I head home to grab my gear for the day. I’ve been biking in the winter for over 20 years now, with the last six riding on a Fatbike. They make winter riding safer, more efficient and way more fun than a regular bike ever could. This year, my dad at 66 years of age, gave up his car and has been Fatbiking as his primary mode of getting around for the winter! After a hearty supper at Primal Pasta in Riversdale, there is still time in the day to enjoy one last snowy activity - cross-country skiing. There are many great ski tracks maintained by the city and the local ski club, Holiday Park, is my favourite. A quiet area where you can often see rabbits, and even deer while you are out.
Spring Is Here! (Sunny, 17C and 30kph wind) The Meewasin Valley is an incredible asset to Saskatoon which any visitor to the city can see right away. The entire length of the city’s riverbank is accessible to the public. It is full of great parks and green spaces connected by paved trails and amazing single track dirt trails. The Meewasin is, in my opinion, the most precious and amazing thing in the entire city. Leaving home I grab my Onewheel and head towards the river. A Onewheel is a self-balancing electric vehicle that is ridiculously fun to ride, remarkably easy to u

t learn, and feels very similar to surfing or snowboarding but you are actually cruising along on pavement, grass, or gravel. My ride to work, for example, involves cruising a few blocks of pavement until I get onto the Meewasin Trail. Dropping down to the pathway, the houses and noises of the city seem to disappear and are replaced with stunning views of the river. Carving along the path I eventually take one of the many bridges and cross the river to downtown. I wheel on up to Drift Cafe’s sidewalk patio to bask in the sunshine and enjoy a flat white and a crepe.
Action-Packed Summer (25C sunny and calm) Each Friday in the summer, Escape Sports organizes a Standup Paddleboard morning coffee/paddle. Launching from Rotary Park, this 90-minute paddle on the river leisurely cruises along until we find a sweet sandbar. Then we all relax in the sand while sipping on hot coffee and taking in the beautiful sunrise coming up over the river

valley. Such a great way to start my day: friends, exercise and great views! In the afternoon I get a text from a buddy saying he’s heading to Blackstrap, about a half hour drive south of Saskatoon. I know exactly what the plan is… kiteboarding! We carpool down to Blackstrap Lake and furiously change into wetsuits, pump up our kites and hit the waves. The thrill of racing across water and boosting through the air is such a rush! For those days in summer where you may not have an entire morning or afternoon, you can often find a free yoga class happening in Kinsmen Park near the river. The peaceful surroundings and gorgeous views will certainly revitalize you. These are just a few of the many ways that I’ve found myself passing time in and around Saskatoon. It’s a great city with many opportunities for adventure and variety with friends and family. Ù

ARTS & CULTURE
BY JENN SMITH NELSON
Over the past six years I’ve written about Saskatoon, from the revitalization of Riversdale to its on-fire food scene, the city has flourished as a vibrant, forward thinking and inclusive community. Diverse and ever-evolving offerings as a four-season destination make anytime a good time to visit. One thing is certain for those who have never been – this prairie hot spot will surprise and delight. Remai Modern Perhaps you’ve heard a thing or two about the new world-class art museum that opened in late 2017? If not, allow me to gush about it wearing my Bachelor of Fine Arts hat. The incredibly innovative and distinct Remai Modern sits on Treaty 6 Territory along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It also happens to be home to the world’s largest collection of linocuts by Picasso, arguably the most prolific and successful artist of all time.

Collections showcasing many pieces gifted from the former Mendel Art Gallery are spread out over 11 galleries on three floors. A variety of programming, a learning studio, films, artist talks and performances can also be enjoyed in its 150-seat theatre.

Winter City Festivals People flock to Saskatoon in the summer for the “festival season”. But those who live here know and love that we are a winter city too! Take in the 4-day music extravaganza, Winterruption (January 18-21) where things heat up with local and international music acts performing inside venues such as the Broadway Theatre and The Refinery. The Enchanted Forest running November 15 – January 5, is a family favourite. Drive through the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and experience a Christmas light show like no other, or have an evening out with friends at the Saskatoon Blues Festival March 2 – 4. Our winter culture really takes the spotlight during WinterShines January 27 – February 4.
Live music locals love Saskatoon has a booming live music scene! If the actions of a bustling bar where devouring pub grub, slinging back beers and singing along to stage acts that make you tick, head immediately to the Capitol Club. This live music venue lovingly referred to as "the rebirth of Lydia’s," oozes nostalgic appeal for locals. With many elements from the former hotspot including church pews and lampposts to the stools patrons sit on; the nighttime hotspot keeps memories of good times passed, alive. For the more refined palette where sharing plates for a seated performance in an intimate candle-lit atmosphere appeals, check out The Bassment. This underground club features both local and touring jazz acts, and is sure to please devoted music connoisseurs. u #SASKATOONing | 14 #Saskatooning 15

Wanuskewin Heritage Park
Seeking connection with nature and the ability to immerse myself in First Nations history and culture are two reasons I keep returning to Wanuskewin. Ancestors and visitors have been meeting on this land for over 6,000 years. In late 2016, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada recognized the point of pride in the community as the best in Canada for its impactful and authentic cultural experiences. With new gallery shows every three months, evolving programming including tipi building, hiking, traditional games, crafts and dance performances, and more, there are many reasons to visit Wanuskewin. However, the site that showcases Plains First Nations history and culture is about to become an even larger draw. With a 40-million-dollar renewal plan and an application underway to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, complete with the reintroduction of bison by 2021, it will become a worldrenowned centre for tourism, education and entertainment. Don’t miss the exhibition by the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada, Norval Morriseau, in October 2018.
Celebrating Culture with Dance Crossing spheres in both art and culture is the city’s multicultural dance scene. Events featuring the Yevshan Ukrainian Folk Ballet Ensemble, Alma Flamenca and Odissi Devotional Dance, combine flavour, flair and passion to create performances that celebrate culture and heritage.
Ukrainian culture runs deep in the province, and Saskatoon shines with Yevshan’s ability to interpret history through dance. Since 1960, the longest running Ukrainian dance group in Western Canada has been entertaining residents with high-energy performances. Over 40 dancers perform at annual events including the Ukrainian Festival, Vesna in May, or during August at FolkFest or Ukrainian Day in the Park.
Dance can move you - not only physically but also emotionally, and Flamenco dancing is a great example of how energy, intensity and emotion are displayed and felt. Take in bi-monthly in-studio Alma Flamenca performances called Tablao, where live music, tapas and Spanish wine add to the ambience; and annual events at the Bassment and Refinery, in April and June respectively. A combination of yoga, dance and spiritual elements is what you can expect from Indian Odissi Devotional Dance. Unique to Saskatchewan, this refined, ancient art form codified with yogic knowledge and philosophy uses postures and mudras (yoga for the hands) to stimulate energy channels. Watch for performances at FolkFest or collaborative events with Alma Flamenca.
Western Development Museum (WDM) I adore the idea of getting lost in the history of Boomtown – a simpler time perfectly captured in essence and form within the museum. My kids are always quick to check out the fleet of cool vehicles from trains to planes and old cars. Create a lasting memory by dressing up in period garb to get an old-time portrait done. The WDM is chock-full of digestible history. However, it’s huge and there’s a lot to take in, so carving out a full morning or afternoon of meandering is recommended. SASKATOON FOOD SCENE BY DAN CLAPSON
I may have moved away from my hometown of Saskatoon over a decade ago, but my Prairie roots still run deep. As a food writer who visits home regularly year after year, it’s wonderful to watch this food and drink scene evolve into something that’s worth taking note of nationally. Plenty of local chefs like Christie Peters and Kyle Michael (The Hollows, Primal), Darren Craddock (Delta Bessborough) and Top Chef Canada alumni, Dale Mackay, along with his chefs Jesse Zuber and Nathan Guggenheimer (Ayden Kitchen and Bar, Little Grouse and Sticks and Stones) are continually exploring the possibilities of contemporary Saskatchewan cuisine. What does that mean? It means that first and foremost, it’s about the ingredients.
Meet dan
The landscape which surrounds this picturesque city is ripe with ingredients like dwarf sour cherries, lentils, mustard, canola, plenty of grain, sea buckthorn berries and, of course saskatoon berries. While many of these ingredients actually make their way around the world, used in countries like Morocco, Italy, Czech Republic and many more, culinary minds of Saskatoon love showcasing them much closer to home.

He contributes to many Canadian publications including Westjet Magazine, Ricardo and is a panelist for the prestigious Air Canada enRoute’s “Canada’s Best New Restaurants” awards as well as Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants.
5 notable chef-driven eateries If you’re looking for a contemporary dining experience in the Prairies, these are a few of the restaurants that are leading the charge. Ayden Kitchen and Bar - The city’s most well-known restaurant nationally, this downtown flagship spot from celebrity chef Dale Mackay opened in 2014 and is a popular place for both dinner and well-crafted cocktails later on in the evening. His other ventures include the Italian-focused Little Grouse, the Pan-Asian Sticks and Stones. The Hollows - Embracing the hyper local mantra, Christie Peters and Kyle Michael’s renowned eatery impressively employs a horticulturalist who grows an array of produce for them during the summer. That means that even in the dead of winter they will be serving you ingredients that they’ve grown themselves. Pretty spectacular, eh?
Nosh Eatery and Tap - Head down to Broadway Avenue to check out this popular vegetable-forward concept. Though not completely meat-free, chef Justin O’Reilly’s main focus is on vegan dishes like the caesar salad with curried cauliflower and cashew lemon dressing or the mushroom gravy-doused poutine accented by cashew coconut “brie cheese” and basil oil. Odd Couple - Pulling inspiration from all over Asia, you can get your fix of plates of Asian food like fried rice topped with crispy bacon, crab rangoon (wontons filled with cream cheese, shrimp and crab), pad thai and plenty more. The approachable food is enhanced by a sleek interior design and thoughtful cocktails. Notable Chef-Driven Eateries continued u

3 iconic Saskatoon restaurants As tasty as those dining hotspots can be, there is nothing wrong with a classic or more casual meal! Here are three places that any born-and-raised Saskatonian would approve of. Calories Restaurant - This Broadway haunt has been a local favourite for years. Folks never tire of the comforting, seasonal fare, but the real secret here is to save room for something from Calories’ bake case. The myriad of cheesecakes, tortes and more --all made in-house-- are impossible to ignore.
Get in the Saskatoon Spirit
19 #SASKATOONing 20 | #Saskatooning
Seeing as we’ve got more grain than we know what to do with in the Canadian Prairies, it’s only natural that Saskatoon has a thriving brewing and distilling scene.
9 Mile Legacy Head over to the Riversdale neighbourhood and visit this budding microbrewery for a flight of brews in its tasting room. Their collaboration brew with Odd Couple, infused with ginger, Szechuan pepper and lemongrass, is especially worth trying.
Taverna Italian Kitchen and Bar - With a recent renovation, Saskatoon’s longest running Italian restaurant is looking more fresh faced than ever. Head here expecting big plates of pasta, veal scallopine, Roman-style, thin crust pizza and the largest selection of Italian wines and spirits in the city. The Yard and Flagon - This iconic pub on Broadway Avenue offers an uber cozy atmosphere, simple fare (the signature coconut-fried chicken sandwich is a favourite and best described as oddly delicious) and live music. The beautiful rooftop patio is arguably the place to knock back a pint of locally brewed beer with friends. Ù
Black Fox Farm Crossmount Lucky Bastard and Distillery Cider Company Distillers One of Canada’s only hypersustainable distilleries, , a visit is necessary not only to taste their spirits ranging from vodka to barrel-aged gin, but to tour and learn about their processes.
Visit the province's only cidery and try samples of classic dry to semi-sweet ciders, plus the interesting citri hop-infused cider. Its remarkable taste is somewhere between an IPA and a dry cider.
The city’s biggest distiller, with its ornate tasting room, has a long list of house-made spirits. Definitely try the spicy Horilka, a honey pepper vodka that pays homage to the city’s Ukrainian heritage.

Buttery, flaky... the perfect complement to a morning Americano.
Saskatoon Spring Rolls (Imperial Rolls) A superior version of a standard spring roll, these are typically made up of ground pork, noodles and spices, wrapped in rice paper and fried until perfectly golden. After one bite, you’ll see how they outshine the thick dough-wrapped rolls you’ll find elsewhere in Canada. Try the spectacular vegan spring rolls at Odd Couple.
Primal and Little Grouse Pasta made with local grain - both of these Italianminded concepts source local grain from a farmer just outside of town, gets it ground by the aforementioned bakery before turning it into anything from pappardelle to agnolotti. Mamma mia! #SASKATOONing | 22
