They may be statues but they’ve got opinions! We asked the Begging Bear and Old Jeremiah of the #StationaryCrew, situated on the University of Guelph grounds, to share their unique perspectives about Guelph:
Bear: Hey Jeremiah, I’m working on a project about how amazing
Guelph is. What do you like best about the University of Guelph campus?
Jer: Well Bear, we have some of the best people I’ve ever met!
I mean, you can’t complain about the view either - our campus is gorgeous. From where I sit in the center of campus I can see that our President’s office is a bumpin’ place year round.
Bear: Yeah, you’ve got a great spot there! I love how the students
paint you different colours too. I may not agree with all the colour combos they use, but I’m a bit more of a fashionista; not that you’d know it from how I get dressed occasionally. People love a bronze bear in a costume!
Jer: I probably have 300 layers of paint on me. I feel like I weigh
an extra 100 pounds! People need to dress you up more and give me a break!
Bear: Nah, you’re a classic! And besides, painting you is on the Old Jeremiah

student’s ‘Top 3 Things To Do at the U of G’ list. I’m on the border of campus. I’m dressed by students, but also by the great Guelph residents.
Jer: Guelph residents really interact with you, huh? I wonder
what other stuff they do around the city? I can’t see from here.
Bear: Well, I hear from @FamilyFountain (another statue
friend of ours) that downtown is a really hopping place. If I wasn’t cemented in place (#StatueProblems), I’d stroll downtown for the awesome festivals, the great food and the beautiful art shows. Bears love art, you know.
Jer: You and me both. Downtown Guelph sounds incredible. My
bucket list includes a cannonball @FamilyFountain. Hey, maybe our new friends can send us some photos?
Bear: Great idea! Maybe we could start #StationaryCrew on
instagram and share. The important thing is that folks come to Guelph, experience all the great things this city has to offer and tell their friends!
Jer: There’s so much to explore! From what

yes sushi burritos are a thing – a great thing! Head to The Boardroom,
grab a game and buy the winner a local pint before catching a show at River Run Centre.
Saturday:
Follow the locals on their Guelph Saturday
morning routine: bring your travel mug for a cup of fair trade java from Planet Bean, pick up a delicious treat from Eric The Baker (croissant
comes highly recommended), and then make your way to the Guelph Farmers’ Market to shop the local harvest! Take the steps to the
historic Basilica of Our Lady, snap a #Guelphie while you’re there! Pop into Guelph Museums and check out the latest exhibit before
lunch. Speaking of, it’s time for a Taste Detours, learn about the foodie scene and Guelph history one bite at a time. Next, bask in all the fall colours at The Arboretum at the University of Guelph (is frisbee your
thing? Take advantage of the frisbee golf course!) Dinnertime! Head to Borealis for a local and sustainable dish or for a vegan meal hop over to Cadence (try all the vegan desserts). Cap the night off with some
sweet dance moves at Ebar or see a comedy show at The Making Box.
Sunday:
Time to indulge in Sunday brunchday, all day
brunch is a thing at Bread Bar! Then grab some bubble tea from Half Tea and hit the pavement – shop until you find that perfect thrifted piece downtown before settling in for a cozy lunch at Buon Gusto.

A Moveable Feast

#CollaborationNation. Not just one of our hashtags, it’s the framework
within which we operate Taste Detours and the very essence of this city. Guelph takes pride in its independence, and buzzes with individuality.
We’ve got a frequency of our very own and a vibrancy like no other. Yet we also promote and support each other beautifully; somehow united within this fiercely independent realm.
The businesses we partner with are passionately local. This becomes
evident when we get a taste of the great care with which they source their of our core. So when you join us on a tour, you get a chance to learn their
stories — what got them inspired and what keeps them dedicated to being the true flavour of this town.
Food tours essentially unwrap (or uncork!) a region by offering access to its ingredients. Food — good, fresh, local — comes naturally to us.
We have very deep agricultural roots; roots from a soil that holds both
our old stories and a strong instinct to flourish. This forms perhaps the
most significant part of our history; indeed food was the very idea behind 8

goods and the flair with which they present it. They are the heart and soul
the founding of this town. These are the roots that we attempt to nurture, and retell. So our deliciousness is not only a matter of Guelph heritage and lore, it’s a tasty fact.
Taste Detours preserves this through storytelling. We offer lesser-known
bits of history along our routes and glimpse into the past to consider how we’ve been shaped by it, how it might influence us today, and likely will tomorrow. We walk the very streets where farmers traded their crops and their cattle; where ambitious immigrants set up new shops and
restaurants; where visionaries designed streets, a town, an imagined life for the growing populace. Much of this still exists today, with a modern
twist. We’re able to make the experience of a food tour memorable in a
unique and personal way by immersing you in these stories and revealing the very heart of Guelph.
Breaking bread and sharing a table is a distinctly human experience. Everybody eats, wherever they go. Savour the places that the locals
like to frequent and you’ll end up tapping into our particular culture of
food. Plus, moving from one scrumptious place to another gives you not
only a chance to experience all of the above, you may just feel justified in eating all that food!
We’re quite literally a movement. A moveable feast. Wherever we grow as a business, we want to remain authentic. To be the ones to offer that extra insight or bit of background to a place. Taste of Craft was born out of a love of Craft Beer and Artisan Cheese!
After collaborating on the first Queen of Craft Beer and Cheese session together, Karyn Boscariol and I decided to share our knowledge while
doing what we truly love! We feel passionate about pairing cheese and beer, telling the stories of local makers and sharing our expertise with
others. It’s a fun and creative venture…describing where pairings take
you, always meeting new people and educating the public about a taste of place.
When we are not running tasting experiences we retail artisan cheeses
and Canadian sustainable seafood and lake fish at the Guelph Farmers’
Market every Saturday year round. It gives us a chance to really engage with people, tell stories about all of our products, monger, educate and offer pairing suggestions. 10
The Market is a true community hub in Guelph. Market
goers are a wonderful bunch of people, who are genuinely
interested in where their food comes from and want to learn more about
products and food sustainability. It is such a personalized and informative shopping experience - recipes and cooking techniques are shared, as
are fun banter and personal stories. We look forward to being there every week. Many of our clients become friends and many do our selling for us, that’s a great feeling. Thanks Guelph!

As someone who has undergone massive weight loss, along with an ever-changing style and wardrobe, I’m often asked “but how do you afford to keep yourself so styled?”. My answer is simple - thrifting!
Thankfully in Guelph, we have a wide array of options when it comes
to thrift and consignment shops, especially in the beautiful downtown
core. What I love about the downtown Guelph thrift scene is that they are smaller shops, with staff that know their racks and are always willing to
help you style yourself! These shops curate their space to be styled well
in store and online, with captivating Instagram posts that keep you in the know and inspired with hot new items.

pieces to work into your wardrobe. More into a retro vintage vibe? Well, it’s all the rage
right now and sure, you can buy the copycat versions new in stores, or you can get the
real deal when you visit Take Time Vintage or Outpost which specialize in thrifted,
vintage, and upcycled clothing. If you’re
seeking a style for a curvier figure, visit a
shop customized for you like Destination Curvy Couture.
When visiting these shops, try and go in with a mental plan. Since regular retail shopping usually involves seeing individual items
styled for you and in an array of sizes, it can be intimidating to enter a thrift store where
you go in with a focus, you’re more likely to have success. Looking for a pair of jeans?
Take time and go through each pair of jeans in your size.If you’re seeking something
specific, try asking someone in the shop
to help because they know their inventory well and are likely going to find what you
need in a heartbeat. When you’ve strolled
all through downtown Guelph thrifting from
shop to shop and refreshing your wardrobe, don’t forget to cycle your clothes back into
these shops, too. With many of them being consignment-based, you can replace the
old with the new and recoup some of that
spending. It’s the best way to save on style, without sacrificing a bit of it.

Thrift shopping or also known as ‘thrifting’ is not for everyone. However, once you reach the ultimate thrill of finding that perfect dress with tags, you’ll be hooked! With so many different types of consignment, second hand, antique and thrift shops in our city, it’s hard not to love it!
Tip #1: Touch every item on every rack: This allows you to know exactly what inventory the store has. This can be helpful in the future if you only have time for a quick scan of the racks. Tip #2: Try it on: If something doesn’t fit, don’t buy it. Fill
your closet with items you will wear today! This will keep you from experiencing buyers remorse.
Tip #3: Visualize: Thrift and consignment stores aren’t always
laid out to tell you what to buy. You can give new life to something if you can see its potential to be styled in a different way or paired with something you own already.
Tip #4: Shop once or twice a week: Once you become
familiar with your favorite shops you’ll know what you saw last time and new pieces will be easier to spot.
My last tip is - Don’t give up: With thrift shopping there is
always new stock going out every day!

Guelph Film Festival

In early November, as the nights start to get dark early, the community gathers at the Guelph Film Festival for nine days of documentaries. The Festival started in 1984, which makes it one of the oldest doc fests in the world. In the era of giant film festivals we buck the trend by staying intentionally small, where community building is king- it’s a ‘spirit of Guelph’ thing. A small film festival feels like a secret, an experience of something special shared with those around you. Along with the docs, we have animated films for kids, the Pocket Films which lead you through downtown finding short films in unusual venues, and this year we are starting the Taste-Reel series, pairing local food with films. Each of our films is built into an event with the film as the cornerstone. We connect different groups and promote local initiatives that are making the world a better place. You leave the Guelph Film Festival both informed and inspired… and hopefully with a few more friends than you had before. Black Heritage Society By Denise from the Guelph Black Heritage Society
The base stones of 83 Essex Street, former British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church, were set in June 1880. The neighbourhood of EssexWaterloo had first become home to Guelph’s English Methodist who named the streets, and then to black settlers who found the community welcoming. The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) was formed after the BME Church was listed for sale in November 2011.

In August 2013, 83 Essex Street was designated a cultural heritage property by the City of Guelph. The plaque reads: “Built in 1880 of local limestone in gothic revival style, the B.M.E. church became the centre of Guelph’s black community. The city’s early black community of fugitive slaves from the United States settled near Waterloo and Essex streets as workers in area stone quarries. After worshipping in a frame church nearby, this stone church was built as a meeting place and a safe haven.” The mission of the GBHS is to restore and maintain the historical former BME Church building (83 Essex Street). 83 Essex Street, now known as the “Heritage Hall”, serves as a community cultural and spiritual gathering space and promotes Guelph and Wellington County’s distinctive place in Southwestern Ontario’s rich Black heritage.
GBHS activities include:
• Providing the community the opportunity to learn about our community’s Black heritage by staging presentations during Black History Month, Emancipation Day and throughout the year.
• Being a resource for the community by providing space for events, workshops, meeting space for clubs and other community groups. Learn about Guelph Black Heritage Society events and Heritage Hall at guelphblackheritage.ca

Imagine being able to print anything you want, from a card or a book or a large type poster...
Today they donate 100% of the proceeds from one or two shows a year to local charities that they feel need help. This is a terrible business model, but they aren’t business people. They charge very little and sell a lot. They don’t have a website but are on social media. Some people might find them offensive, but they could care less. They feel most local problems have local solutions. When you see Stubbs Letterpress at a show you should stop and talk to them if you have ideas, or want to donate printing materials. Stubbs Letterpress
The Stubbs Letterpress was formed as a way for a father and his two daughters to express themselves by writing small books of poems and fables. Initially influenced heavily by Johnny Cash and Dr. Seuss, this inspiration lasted only three or four books. They printed the covers using the 700 year old technology of a letterpress proofing press. After the girls became teenagers, the three of them would come up with ideas for cards, posters and prints based on things they liked; empowering young women, music, philosophy and coffee, lots of dog related items, and they always gave away free stuff!
