Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that Guelph is situated on treaty land that is steeped in rich Indigenous history and home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people today. As a City we have a responsibility for the stewardship of the land on which we live, work, and visit.

Today we acknowledge the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation of the Anishinaabek Peoples on whose traditional territory we are meeting.

Guelph acknowledges the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

From time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have been the stewards of this land. Present-day Guelph is situated on the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabek Nations, specifically the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. In 1784, through Between the Lakes Treaty No. 3, the Mississaugas ceded 3,000,000 acres of land between Lakes Huron, Ontario and Erie to the British Crown, opening up the lands for European settlement. With settlement came colonial policies and practices intended to exploit, assimilate and eradicate Indigenous Peoples. As a country, we are now learning about, and coming to terms with, this troubling history. Today, Guelph remains home to thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and to non-Indigenous settlers from around the world. Guided by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, our community is working to strengthen our relationships with the Original Peoples as we move forward together in the search for collective truth and healing.

How to Spend a Weekend in Guelph

FRIDAY NIGHT:

Let’s kick off the weekend with a delicious dinner at Crafty Ramen. Crafty Ramen has creative and colourful options for the ramen lover, including amazing fresh ramen noodles made in-house that will make your taste buds thank you. Afterwards let’s go spend a few hours testing out a medley of local, in-house brewed craft beer and a board game in the historic Petrie Building at Brothers Brewing Company.

SATURDAY:

Good Morning! We begin the day with a downtown stroll to Eric the Baker, Guelph’s own traditionally influenced French bakery to check two things off your list: a delicious coffee and a house-made, melt-in-your mouth croissant, or Eric’s signature sausage roll. The space is quaint and take out only, so you can take your delicious bites and enjoy the morning sun in Market Square. Heads up - it is cash only! Next, we wander through the 190+ year old, historic Guelph Farmers’ Market. The variety of goodies is vast and you’ll be sure to find that perfect souvenir or gift to take home!

Next up, we take in some local history at the Guelph Civic Museum and then we’ll lunch at The Boathouse Tea Room and Ice Cream. Situated alongside the Speed River you can indulge in a locally sourced menu, delicious teas and ice cream. The Boathouse is one of Guelph’s iconic landmarks and is a hub of activity year-round. Neighbouring is the Covered Bridge where you can start a trail walk along the river or you can grab a paddle from Speed River Paddling and explore the city by water.

Time to freshen up at your accommodation and then we will enjoy dinner at Piatto Pizzeria and Enoteca. A beautiful restaurant serving up authentic Neapolitan pizzas in the beautifully renovated historic Wellington Hotel building in downtown Guelph. A must try is the Dolce e Fumoso – it’s chef’s kiss.

Let’s unwind from a packed day with a movie at The Bookshelf Cinema. A wide selection of independent and popular movies light the screen up with a rotating weekly schedule so you can often find something everyone will like. Grab a glass of wine, some popcorn and enjoy the show.

SUNDAY:

Rise and Shine! The best way to wrap up a whirlwind weekend in Guelph is to take in the island flavours over brunch at Rise & Shine. Rise & Shine Island Flavour not only has a robust brunch menu but a killer patio for warmer days. The Trinidadian flavours that run through the menu has made this joint one of the most recommended for all to try.

Time to shop. We’ve got so much going on with unique offerings that can only be found in Downtown Guelph - so don’t be afraid to wander and discover. For over a century, Guelph has been a “beer city” with a rich brewing history that flows into the present. Today, we are lucky to have five unique local brewers in Guelph including: Royal City Brewing, Fixed Gear Brewing, Wellington Brewery, Sleeman Brewing, and Brothers Brewing. While each of these local breweries are different sizes and have their own unique approaches to brewing, they share a commitment to nurturing and growing Guelph’s local beer culture.

Guelph’s local brewers teamed up to launch the website Guelph.Beer, a one-of-a-kind partnership focused on furthering beer education, creating collaboration, and promoting Guelph’s reputation as a world-class brewing centre and beer destination. Together these local brewers will host community events, create collaboration beers, and work alongside each other to celebrate all things local and craft.

Guelph has no shortage of charming, boutique-style, independently-run bridal shops – four within five-minutes walking distance of each other in the downtown core. That makes Guelph one of the best destinations for any bride.

Our local shop owners want to make shopping for your dress as magical as the wedding day itself. They’re dedicated to making the adventure of picking the perfect white (or crème, or off-white, or vivid white (there are just so many whites!)) a memorable addition to wedding planning. Let’s start the day by parking at the Market Parkade (so if you need a coffee before you hit the first shop, you’ll have your pick). One of four bridal shops in downtown, Sixpence Bridal Studio stands on its own as the only consignment boutique in Guelph. They offer once worn designer dresses, in great condition, at a discounted price. With the money saved here, you’ll have more for splurging in other elements of the wedding process.

Back downtown you will find Old Quebec Street Shoppes. A jewel box amidst the madness of downtown, you’ll find a multitude of precious stores. But you’re really there for the pearl in the shell, Crème Couture, a shop that can dress every wearer in the bridal party: brides, mothers, bridesmaids, flower girls and maids of honour.

Quebec Street is arguably one of the cutest streets in town and is home to the Tilted Veil. The Tilted Veil carries extremely unique dresses (some are only found in this shop in all of Canada). Nestled inside the third floor of the heritage Petrie Building, which was built in 1882, The Modern Bride not only promises gorgeous gowns, but equally gorgeous views of the city and our crowning statement, the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate. Maybe we can tick another box on the wedding to-do list. Can you say ceremony, done?

At the Modern Bride you can walk out with a dress that’ll make you feel and look as statuesque as the stunning steeples. The Modern Bride specializes in an experience for the contemporary bride and you’ll be sure to be awed by dresses outside of the mainstream.

The Good Games : Get Out. Out Do.

Canada’s Biggest Outdoor Multi-Sport Festival

The Good Games are Canada’s largest masters multi-sport festival for athletes over 30. The event takes place annually and will be held on July 8-9th, in 2023 at the University of Guelph with the festival being held in downtown Guelph, Ontario. The festival features a variety of sports including basketball, pickleball, beach volleyball, slo-pitch, track and field, and trail running. The Good Games targets men and women over 30 who are former high school or collegiate athletes, former professional athletes, and recreational league athletes who currently play or want to play the sports offered. The Good Games is the only yearly masters multi-sport festival in Canada and it adds a community festival to go along with the sport competition. It’s the tournament of tournaments.

The Good Games are being run by Helen Stoumbos, former Women’s national soccer player for Canada, and Mike F. Jean. The Good Games aims to be the biggest Multi-Sport Games for athletes 30+ in North America and it’s a great opportunity for athletes over 30 to keep competing and feeling part of a community.

2023 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Guelph Jazz Festival, three decades animating the city with world-class live music every September. The 2023 Festival will be September 14-17 and once again feature five complementary streams of programming to suit the tastes of a wide range of Guelph visitors and tourists: The Ticketed Concert Series in Downtown venues; ‘GJF in Market Square,’ featuring free outdoor concerts on September 16-17, including the popular ‘Friday Night Street Music Party in Market Square’; ‘GJF in the Parks,’ featuring outdoor concerts in municipal parks outside the Downtown core, presented in collaboration with affiliate Neighbourhood Groups; ‘GJF Colloquium,’ featuring ancillary programming like artist talks, interviews, workshops, and related programming; and ‘GJF Around Town,’ featuring live music in many restaurant and bar venues, widening access to live music around the city.

Programming for the 30th Anniversary Guelph Jazz Festival will be announced in the early summer, and as always will represent the best from the regional, national, and international fields of creative improvised music. This announcement will be paired with other opportunities to get involved, including volunteerism, membership, and corporate sponsorship. The City of Guelph continues our work connecting and growing its network of on-road cycling infrastructure and off-road trails, many winding along the scenic Speed and Eramosa Rivers. Our unique and historic downtown is a must-visit, as well as exploring the many local shops and markets. The city is fantastic to explore by bike and makes an excellent base in which to explore Wellington County and jump onto the G2G trail. Mountain bikers can join the Guelph Off-Road Bicycling Association and enjoy over 20km on the Guelph Lake Mountain Bike Trails.
