CELEBRATING THE BEST OF THE BEST IN SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM The 2018 Lilizela Tourism Awards national winners were presented their trophies and certificates at a glittering function convened at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday, 17th November.
Over 800 guests across government, industry and media were in attendance at this year’s star-studded ceremony. This annual event, now in its sixth year, is organised by South African Tourism and recognises and rewards those who work passionately and with pride to deliver a world-class product and service and whose delivery grows South African’s global destination competitiveness.

Opening the awards dinner, South Africas’ Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom said: “It is a real privilege to be here with you to celebrate your successes and achievements. That’s what tonight is all about: recognizing and rewarding tourism players, businesses and the people on the ground who collectively make South Africa the great global destination that it is.”

In the run-up to the national awards, judges selected over 500 finalists from more than 1 365 entries, after which provincial winners were announced at the end of September with award presentation ceremonies held in each of the country’s nine provinces in the categories of accommodation, visitor experience, tour operators, tour guides, and entrepreneurship. This year, winners of the national Lilizela Tourism Awards also received an art piece by various local artists represented by Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) and Artist Proof Studios. Buffalo Kloof is one of only two exclusive Rowland Ward ‘fair chase’ outfits in South Africa. This coveted international accreditation demonstrates that it operates with absolute integrity, according to the highest standards of international free roam and fair chase best practices and ethics; which stem from a bedrock of passion for wildlife, the land and all that the owners and custodians of Buffalo Kloof do on the land. The reserve is already home to the ‘Big 4’ game species (elephant, white rhino, leopard and Cape buffalo), with elephants walking proudly on its soil for the first time in 300 years.
Furthermore, in an exciting new development, Buffalo Kloof recently welcomed its very first Cheetah. This fleetfooted feline species has not been found in the region for the past 200 years. In addition, lions will soon also be introduced to the reserve, securing its status as a ‘Big 5’ destination. As part of Buffalo Kloof’s efforts to continuously push the boundary in conservation, the reserve is partnering with selected local and international conservation organisations to improve security and antipoaching activities on the reserve; including the well-known World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in their Black Rhino Range Expansion Programme (BRREP).

Buffalo Kloof also offers non-hunters a variety of thrilling conservation-related experiences, whereby guests have the opportunity to get involved at grassroots level through one of their exclusive volunteering initiatives, in return for a sponsorship fee: ‘Reach out to a rhino’
‘Passionate about protection’
Through this initiative, Buffalo Kloof offers guests the opportunity to do their part in the protection of rhinos by partaking in a focused female rhino adoption programme, which is specifically aimed at protecting them; and thereby ensuring the continuation of this precious keystone species, in perpetuity.
This anti-poaching initiative allows participants to get first-hand experience in activities such as: • Darting and monitoring of animals. • Protective rhino horn infusion procedures. • Fence mending and monitoring. • Training in anti-poaching and reconnaissance work.
This allows participants to share in the responsibility of their adopted female rhino’s upkeep, notching, grazing and specialised conservation efforts.
‘Power of the land’
In return, participants in this worthy initiative are given the opportunity to name her, take part in her notching procedure, and receive regular, personalised updates from the team at Buffalo Kloof entrusted with her day-to-day care.
This fauna and flora educational initiative provides guests with an opportunity to participate in land management through the following activities: • Grass regeneration: phosphating and fertilisation. • Mulching and clearing of alien vegetation. • Animal grazing and condition monitoring.

s the crow flies directly from Angola to the east coast of Brazil, somewhere in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean is where you find St Helena.
Famous for being the residence of deposed French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte after the Battle of Waterloo until his death in 1821. Up until 2017, St Helena was only accessible by ship. The opening of St Helena’s airport and the advent of commercial flights by South African carrier, Airlink, has reduced journey times to the Island from days to mere hours. The History St Helena’s history is rich and fascinating, spanning over 500 years. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, the island was possessed by the Dutch and then became British, initially under the East India Company, then The Crown. Until the opening of the Suez Canal, the island was of immense strategic importance for the British. Due to its location, the island played a vital role in the abolition of slavery, and because of its remoteness has been a place of exile for many, including 6,000 Boers, Chief Dinizulu, Bahraini Princes, and of course the island’s most famous exile, Napoleon.
