THE NEW: EVENT VENUES
ALL ARO UND. . .
THE ROUNDHOUSE
One of Toronto’s most unique landmarks, the historic John Street Roundhouse was built to service the steam locomotives that pioneered our nation’s industry. Fast forward to Canada 150–it’s now prime space for events in the burgeoning South Core tech and entertainment district.
NEW! THE REC ROOM. For a ready-made way to bring your groups into the Roundhouse, Cineplex unveils its hot new event and entertainment venture in Toronto this summer: The Rec Room Roundhouse. Flexible spaces are suitable for meetings, seminars, luncheons and teambuilding, in a go-to dining and entertainment destination for groups and events. With 40,000 square feet of space and licensed occupancy set for 1,200, this creative venue makes it easy to infuse fun activities into business gatherings in downtown Toronto.
STEAM WHISTLE BREWING. One of Canada’s most successful independent brewers crafts its premium Pilsner right here in its Roundhouse headquarters. In addition to private brewery tours, Steam Whistle has two event spaces that can accommodate groups of 30 to 750. Unadorned, they preserve the building’s raw, industrial character, with large multi-paned windows, exposed red brick and hand-hewn pillars supporting 60-foot ceilings.
The Rec Room
ROUNDHOUSE PARK. Right across from the CN Tower, Rogers Centre and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, this city-owned park can be permitted for corporate events. During NBA All-Star weekend in February 2016, host Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment had a custom-built VIP lounge and entertainment complex on site. This year, delegates of the ASAE Annual Meeting and Expo will party here for their closing function (see more, page 28). “It’s an intricate site. You certainly have to work closely with the city and all neighbours in a high-traffic area. There are a lot of variables, but anything is doable with creativity and a little bit of thinking outside the box,” says Heidi Pokorny, chief operating officer of InMarket, the Toronto-based company that led the event management of both projects.

• Main room is equipped with an array of high-tech sound and lighting fixtures, including a 65-foot stage and LED video wall. • Glass-walled Solarium has capacity to host a banquet of 200, and opens to two private patios with a spectacular lakeside view of the skyline for groups of up to 900. • INK Entertainment offers in-house planning services and support, using a range of vendors for catering, design, floral, talent and entertainment for custom events.

Spaces: Seven executive meeting rooms, seating 16 to 44, feature plug-and-play tools for presentations and conferencing. The Event Hall and lounge on the 17th floor is walled by dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the city skyline and Lake Ontario. Bonus View: The large outdoor terrace offers 180-degree views of Toronto’s downtown. Cool Fact: The venue’s first major event was, appropriately enough, to host the 2017 National Newspaper Awards.

Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, unveiled new corporate headquarters in the King Street East Design District that includes a purpose-built meeting and event venue, The Globe and Mail Centre. The building’s top two floors house private function space that can accommodate up to 400 people for conferences, galas or executive retreats. Up-to-date media goodies such as digital AV technology make this space “probably among the most technically advanced in Canada,” says Tanya Mora, sales and marketing manager.

Long-running stage company Crow’s Theatre has debuted in a permanent space, taking residence in the new Streetcar Crowsnest. Located in Toronto’s trendy east end Leslieville neighbourhood, the professional performing arts facility also caters to corporate event planners in three function spaces, including a main theatre and a permanent bar and lounge area ideal to host up to 450 guests.

Indigenous Educators Make Global Connections T H E M E E T I N G : World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE), July 24–28, 2017 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and various offsite venues.
W H O AT T E N D S : More than 3,000 educators and leaders representing First Nations from Canada, Native Americans from the U.S., Aborigines from Australia, Maori from New Zealand, Ainu from Japan, Sami from Norway, and others. Also open to anyone interested in connecting with indigenous educators or building cultural awareness.
T H E AG E N DA : Host partners TAP Resources and Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) received more than 1,000 abstracts to arrange five full days of programming, including three days of presentations, panels and workshops and a marketplace at the Convention Centre. Additional programming has also been designed for young leaders to develop knowledge and creativity. “It’s truly a people’s conference and opportunity for indigenous people from around the globe to connect and make partnerships that might not otherwise exist,” says Tuesday Johnson-MacDonald, president, TAP Resources, based on the Six Nations of the Grand River, about an hour outside Toronto.
C U LT U R A L E XC U R S I O N S : Tours to historic sites and indigenous communities in the city and within a 90-minute range of Toronto offer unique experiential learning opportunities.
“We’ve made great efforts that this World Indigneous Conference held in Toronto be open to those who are interested in learning more and having a deeper understanding of indigenous people, to come and participate.” – Tuesday Johnson-MacDonald Executive producer and lead event manager 30

Hear an indigenous welcome sung by Six Nations youth across Ontario.
Olympic Island, Toronto Island Parks “The traditional welcome ceremony of the Six Nations of the Grand River people must take place on land. The way we welcome international guests into our territories has been part of who we are from way before Columbus; it’s not something we conduct inside a building or convention centre,” says Johnson-MacDonald. Representatives from each visiting delegation will be met at the lake’s edge and greeted by Iroquois Confederacy Chiefs as well as Metis and Inuit leaders. Logistics include transporting AV and staging equipment, catering a traditional feast, city permitting and a ticketing system for delegates to arrive via Toronto Island Ferry. Full contingency plans were also made for alternative sites on the mainland.
Fort York, The Garrison Common For the closing gala, this open-air event space will be transformed with lights, tipees and stage, with seating for more than 3,000 west of the main gates of historic Fort York. The gala will provide a cultural extravaganza representative of the global indigenous cultures attending WIPCE.
TRADITIONAL FEAST Off-site catering was an important consideration in the planning process, to share indigenous cuisine and host traditional feasts. The bid was won by Hiawatha Osawamick, accomplished chef and owner of Hiawatha Catering based on the Wahnapitae First Nation near Sudbury, Ont. Her menu fuses contemporary and traditional cuisine with Canadian-sourced ingredients such as bannock with maple butter, duck, pickerel, rabbit and elk meatballs.

T H E WO R K : Wong’s mission is to find ways to bring life-saving healthcare solutions into hard-to-get-to places– like outer space or impoverished nations–using technology such as 3D printing, drones, robotics and databases. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station used Wong’s mobile 3D printer for the first time in 2017 to create a custom medical device–a finger splint–using blueprints digitally uploaded from Toronto. By the same principle, a solar-powered mobile 3D printing system fits in a carry-on suitcase to produce medical supplies in remote communities: simple, life-changing devices such as tourniquettes, prosthetics, splints and more.

Of particular interest to audiences with an interest in urban architecture and design, his tours have become an annual hit of the Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO).
