Verica (Vera) Krasavac, Owner, Queen Gypsy YOU STARTED BY SELLING PASTRIES AT BRAMPTON FARMERS’ MARKET; WHY OPEN A RESTAURANT? Planting roots by opening a business in beautiful and growing downtown Brampton allowed us to offer two of our passions in one place: continue to make traditional, handmade bread and pasties, so loved by everyone at the market. As well, we now provide a unique dining experience, serving authentic, traditionally prepared Serbian and eastern European food - just like mother used to make in Serbia.

HOW’S BUSINESS? We get smiles and love from almost everyone we see at our place, and around the neighbourhood. It feels more like a family than a business sometimes. We have many regulars; some people have to have “their” table beside our little fireplace. I like to come out of the kitchen to see if everyone is enjoying themselves and the food... nothing but smiles and love all around the table!

Q&A WITH...

Jael Richardson, Founder and Artistic Director, The Festival of Literary Diversity (the FOLD) WHAT IS THE FOLD? We gather some of Canada’s top storytellers from diverse backgrounds and marginalized communities — authors who may be underrepresented at other literary events. It’s an opportunity to connect around stories that reflect Canada’s national identity. WHY DID YOU START THE FESTIVAL? I am an author. I live in Brampton, and I love reading books. After going to literary festivals for years, I noticed that they didn’t have a lot of diversity. I wanted to hear authors from different communities, talking about their stories, how they came up with them, and what their stories meant to them. WHY BRAMPTON? We are a young, underserved city that celebrates diversity and reflects Canada’s multicultural identity. It’s the perfect place for an event like this.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF THE FESTIVAL? It is so much fun to plan; it’s hard work, but it’s fun. When you take diversity as your mission, it makes your work harder, but it always reaps better results. When people get to the festival and they hear from our authors, it’s a rich and meaningful experience. HOW DOES THE FESTIVAL REFLECT BRAMPTON’S ARTS AND CULTURE? By celebrating voices from Brampton and across Canada here, it tells people that this is a place that, no matter who you are, no matter what you look like, no matter your culture, community, sexual orientation, disability or religion: you can come here and share your story.

Artistic Director Jael Richardson moderating a panel on publishing in Canada, FOLD 2017

Jael Richardson is author of The Stone Thrower: A Daughter’s Lesson, a Father’s Life, a memoir based on her relationship with her father, CFL quarterback Chuck Ealey. TOURISMBRAMPTON.CA | 19

The River Drew Me Here...

CELEBRATING CHURCHVILLE’S 200TH ANNIVERSARY

REMEMBERING THE 1948 BRAMPTON FLOOD

The village of Churchville was founded 200 years ago as one of the region’s earliest farming communities and grew around a gristmill on the Credit River. This legacy is commemorated in modern-day Brampton by Art Luc’s sculpture, The River Drew Me Here, unveiled at Sid Manser Park in September 2017, a public art project in honour of Churchville’s 200th Anniversary. This art piece symbolizes the importance of rivers in the history of early communities.

Brampton’s historic town centre was built on the floodplain of Etobicoke Creek, which was under constant threat of overflowing in the spring and during heavy rains. The worst flood ever took place 70 years ago in March 1948, when a devastating deluge left the crossroads at Queen and Main Streets under six feet of water and caused significant damage. Thankfully, there were no fatalities, but it prompted construction of a concrete channel to divert the creek away from downtown in 1952.

RIVERS IN TIME ART AND ATTRACTIONS MARK MEMORABLE TIMES AND PRESERVE A GLIMPSE OF DAYS GONE BY

THEN/NOW A RAILWAY STATION, RELOCATED Visit Mount Pleasant Village to check out the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) station, a historic building revived as a cultural hub in this active community. The structure itself has seen many travels. Originally positioned at Queen Street West and Park Street in downtown Brampton, it was relocated for use as a greenhouse in 1981. In the 1990s, after a lengthy campaign to once again save the building, it was dismantled and stored on a farm property close by. Finally, in 2011, it was carefully reconstructed with salvaged materials using the original architectural evidence. The CPR station played a critical role in Brampton’s history. Through this original rail station, flowers from “Flower Town” were shipped around the world, and thousands of soldiers set off for service overseas. It functioned then, as it does now, as a vital community hub.

Q&A WITH...

Kevin Allen and Trevor Davis, owners of Toprock Climbing

WHY DID YOU START A CLIMBING GYM? We’ve both been avid climbers for years. We met in university, where we volunteered at the climbing club. It’s a sport you can do anywhere around the world, and its since taken us to locations all over Europe, South America and North America. We opened Toprock Climbing here in Brampton as a place to gather local climbers, introduce new people to the sport and let visitors enjoy climbing as much as we love it.

engaging the region’s rock climbing community, we want to create an in-depth experience.

WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT? When you come here, it is more than about climbing: it’s also about the community. Between hosting social nights, community gatherings, friendly competitions and

WHAT ABOUT FIRST-TIMERS? A lot of our visitors are new to climbing. We’ve marked introductory paths that allow first timers to get to the top and enjoy the experience.

WHAT’S THE TOUGHEST WALL TO CLIMB? We have a variety of paths on all our walls, each labeled with markings to indicate the level of difficulty. A lot of experienced climbers jump on our overhang wall: at 65 degrees, the angle challenges people to do some burly moves.

We fell in love with tea, and we wanted to use tea to positively impact people’s lives, to give them a memorable experience. We love our visitors and feel a strong sense of connectivity in such a big city! WHAT’S BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS? We believe people come back because we truly value their business. We don’t just welcome you; we welcome you with a curtsey and a twirl, a personalized note on your cup, and fun, a lot of fun, laughs and stories in between.

ROYAL TEA! Daniel and Renata were invited to serve Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall on their latest royal visit to celebrate Canada 150. TOURISMBRAMPTON.CA | 73

BRAMPTON / to do: around the city

TO DO »

AROUND THE CITY MOUNT PLEASANT VILLAGE In the northwest corner of Brampton, Mount Pleasant Village is an emerging urban neighbourhood built around transit and public places to walk, bike and play. Served by the Mount Pleasant GO commuter train station, the community is centred in Mount Pleasant Village Square, a lively site of community events and a Brampton Library branch and community centre in a restored historic CPR Rail Station. TO DO: Check out outdoor summer movie nights in Village Square.

BRAMALEA Created as Canada’s first model suburb in the 1960s, Bramalea may now be best-known by visitors for the spectacular, 100-acre Donald M. Gordon Chinguacousy Park: locals call this multi-sports destination (it has a ski hill!) and public event space “Ching Park”. Other popular stops include Bramalea City Centre for power shopping and, across the street, the Brampton Library’s gorgeous Chinguacousy Branch, with its cool new recording studio and workspaces. TO DO: Go tubing down the slope of Mount Ching.

BRAMPTON / to do: around the city

HEART LAKE AREA The family-friendly neighbourhoods close to the Heart Lake Conservation Area bustle with activities on ample sports fields, playgrounds and are well-served by community centres – plus, it’s nice to have the peaceful and natural atmosphere of a lake nearby. TO DO: Go fishing at the Heart Lake Conservation Area, try Treetop Trekking or checkout a match at the Brampton Soccer Centre.

GORE MEADOWS AREA Towards Brampton’s eastern corner, a growing community is home to young families who value its protected natural spaces and friendly neighbourhoods. Attractions include Claireville Conservation Area along the West Humber River, and the Gore Meadows Recreation Centre, adding an eight-lane lap pool and a leisure swimming pool and, outdoors, a summer spray pad and winter skating rink. TO DO: Saddle up for horseback riding at Claireville Ranch, featuring 350 acres of trails.

DOWNTOWN BRAMPTON From the gazebo and gardens of Gage Park that define Brampton’s oldest municipal commons (established 1903) to restored estate homes such as Alderlea, downtown Brampton blends heritage and history with contemporary, urban living. At the hub is Garden Square, The Rose, PAMA and more! TO DO: Enjoy local artists on stage in Garden Square all summer long!

MAKE IT A DAY » NOT SURE WHAT TO DO? We have suggestions! Make the most of your time here with family and friends with these fun ideas on how to spend the day.

1» Group Get-Togethers

Introduce your guests to a classic Canadian winter activity: glide along the Gage Park Skating trail in downtown Brampton or whoosh down the ski hill snow tubing at Ching Park. Play out sibling rivalries at one of our skill-testing, interactive game facilities such as Battle Archery or Stryke Target Range.

»2 Kid-Friendly Fun

Plan a summer picnic and leave time to build a sand castle at Professor’s Lake. Thrill the family with an aquatic splash at the all-new Wet ’N’ Wild Toronto waterpark. Head to Chinguacousy Park for a few hours of fun at the children’s playground, then try a pony ride or see the animals in the petting zoo and barn.

Outdoor Adventures

It’s easy to get outdoors and be active in Brampton’s amazing green spaces and nature trails. Learn to ride a horse on a forested trail along the river at Claireville Ranch. Go off-road and bike the Etobicoke Creek Trail. From late April to mid-October, fish for rainbow trout in the Heart Lake Conservation Area, or walk on top of a forest canopy in Treetop Trekking’s zip line and aerial game park.

Arts & Culture

See what’s on at The Rose, Brampton’s premiere theatre. Step into history at PAMA. Visit the original jail cells, courthouse and land registry office. Make a date to meet at Garden Square to catch free live shows throughout the year. Plan your dates around our signature cultural events like CeleBrampton and The FOLD. See Calendar, page 12.
