Hall Together Now Chef-driven food halls are shaking up the culinary scene in Toronto with fresh and fast handcrafted food in casual, social settings. Here are just some of the experiences you can taste while exploring the city.

◂ Assembly Chef’s Hall: Taste signature dishes from 17 top Toronto chefs, restaurateurs and baristas under one roof, in Canada’s first chef-driven community market. From Mediterranean share plates and new Asian cuisine, to next level espresso and Bangkok-style street food, it’s a big taste experience.

Assembly Chef’s Hall

In late 2018, Holt Renfrew will open a new Colette Grand Café at its Yorkville retail location, celebrating the essence of sophisticated French style in a casual-elegant Mediterranean dining experience. Watch for famed Momofuko’s soon-to-open concept restaurant. While the theme is a well-guarded secret, the eatery will occupy the entire third floor of the restaurant’s existing multi-level downtown building. Fresh and local are the calling cards at Craft Beer Market, where a huge selection of crafted beverages is offered

alongside fresh local fare. The restaurant gives generously to community programs and sources its goods responsibly. Groups of up to 400 can gather in their large space with semi-private dining room and seasonal patio. Amano Pasta at Union Station is a hopping new eatery offering fresh, homemade pasta and take-away baked goods and sandwiches, made fresh with local ingredients. The elegant and efficient space can accommodate 100, and it often does; especially at aperitivo hour when a one-price cheese and meat plate and buck-an-ounce wine draw crowds.

Some food halls can be booked for groups. All of them cater. Set up a food hall experience right at your event with a tapas tasting station, raw oyster bar, wine pairings and other food hall goodies.

Saks Food Hall by Pusateri’s: Shop, dine-in or takeaway from this food-lover’s paradise located below Saks Fifth Avenue on Yonge Street. Enjoy unique food experiences like CO/LAB, a rotating partnership with the city’s food experts including the wildly popular Momofuku. Campo Food Hall: Market by day, tapas hall by night, this Spanish-inspired food hall seats 70 and offers grab-and-go snacks, a bar, retail store and sit down restaurant. Venue buy-out is available for special events. Harboureats by Mercantino: Sit down or grab and go from the Chef’s Table, the Raw Bar’s specialty crafted sushi selection or the Taqueria’s Mexican-inspired cuisine.

IN THE WORKS… More food hall experiences are coming to Toronto. Eataly—the acclaimed international Italian food market—opens its first Canadian location in 2019 in the heart of Toronto’s stylish Yorkville neighbourhood. The vibrant Italian food marketplace will feature a mix of food markets, restaurants and eateries spanning 50,000 sq. ft. over three stories. Waterworks Food Hall, a heritage redevelopment project opening in 2020, will feature a 20,000-sq.-ft. Europeanstyle market hall. Unlike other food halls, Waterworks will open onto green space— St. Andrews Playground, one of downtown’s oldest parks.

The Food: A charcuterie board presented in a real kayak; a three-course meal featuring salmon jerky and grilled steak; deconstructed s’mores. When Tourism Toronto partnered with three local artists to brighten up winter nights, they got glowing results. Literally! Each artist created a winter-themed mural using glow-in-the-dark elements to brighten city streets. “This was the first time we’ve had glow-in-the-dark murals in the city,” says Margaux Cabais, social community manager, Tourism Toronto. “The murals drove foot traffic and encouraged passersby to take photos to share online. THE LEAD E R S CI R C L E The Leaders Circle program partners with the city’s top thinkers, innovators, academics and researchers to attract international meetings to Toronto. Conventions and citywide business meetings help to strengthen Toronto’s global reputation, promote innovation and leave a legacy of social and economic benefits to the city and region.

Business events make a significant contribution to the city. The 2018 Leaders Circle Recognition Gala recently honoured 12 leading experts whose efforts to bring high-profile international meetings generated more than $63 million in economic impact for Toronto. Without a local ambassador, 70 per cent of international conventions would not consider an overseas destination. Toronto is a world leader in life sciences, tech and finance and is making in-roads into renewable energy. The promotion of the city’s intellectual assets to the world helps meeting planners enhance content and programming, exhibitor base, attendance and sponsorship.

OpenText Enterprise World 2017 OpenText Enterprise World is among the largest technology conferences in the industry. After holding the event in various U.S. cities, the organization felt it was time to return home to Toronto for the 2017 and the 2018 events, according to OpenText’s senior global event manager, Jasmine Cargioli, and senior corporate event planner Shawna Creen. As Canada’s largest software company, OpenText holding its biggest ever event in Toronto was like a homecoming celebration last year. This unique event attracted more than 5,000 customers, industry thought leaders and technology professionals in 2017. Organizers expect an even bigger turnout in 2018. The 2018 event will be held July 10–12, and will return to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Cargioli and Creen shared more details about what makes Toronto the ideal venue for Enterprise World. Great Facilities: “At the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, we found something that really worked for us last year,” Cargioli says. “It has the meeting space that we need, all under one roof, and there is room to expand as we look to grow year-over-year. Having several hotels within easy reach is also very convenient for our staff and attendees.” Easy Transportation: “With attendees from all over the world, we really encouraged everyone to use the UP Express train service from the airport. This fast, reliable service was a great selling feature and benefit for attendees,” says Creen. Special Event: “Our closing event at Polson Pier was a uniquely Toronto experience overlooking the city and Lake Ontario,” according to Creen. “We had a Canadian band and we ended with fireworks over the lake. That was an awesome experience for international guests and Torontonians alike.” BusinessEventsToronto.com

Planning an event in Toronto? Business Events Toronto (BET) is your first point of contact. An early conversation about your needs will enable the team to make connections with Toronto’s best resources and talent. That’s what 360° Service is all about, according to Kathryn Wakefield, director of client services.

CONNECT “We can do everything from providing video content and images, to helping planners produce their collateral and meeting guides, to providing social media support and even content for their tweets,” says Wakefield, “But more importantly, we can connect planners to the local talent and resources in our city.” For example, when the International Confederation of Midwives decided to include an outdoor walk and celebration as part of its 2017 Toronto Congress, BET helped the organization navigate the city permits process as well as resources available to support the event. PLAN “We have such amazing outdoor venues, including our parks,” says Wakefield, ”So for planners looking for something different, the city has created this terrific online portal. It’s a step-by-step walkthrough, with information on permitting that’s needed, policing, security, and even garbage and cleanup requirements. Those are the kinds of resources we make sure planners are aware of.”

SUPPORT 360° Service also means BET will help you consider arrival options, connect you to talent to maximize the effectiveness of your event, and follow-up to receive feedback and say: ”thanks for coming.” Says Wakefield: ”Our mandate, fundamentally, is to support planners’ needs and their objectives; to help make their meeting a success.” Here’s what 360° Service can do for you • Attendance building and promotional resources • Customs and immigration liaisons • Help with site selection and visits • Customized microsites for your conference or event • Planning insights and local best practices • Innovative partnership opportunities • Complimentary RFP service • Dedicated client services manager • Media support, including PR, social media and online resources

Tara Gordon Vice-president Sales & Service tgordon@torcvb.com “My passion is urban design, so when I have the opportunity to explore the city I always seek out areas that showcase adaptive reuse at work. Whether it’s discovering a new designer shop in a tucked-away laneway of the the Historic Distillery District or exploring the market at the Evergreen Brick Works, I love to see how our past is incorporated into the present. This makes me very excited for the development by Sidewalk Labs of a smart city and how that space is transformed in the coming years!”

Loren Christie Director of Sales, Canada & International Congress lchristie@torcvb.com “The rooftop of The Broadview Hotel is one of my personal favourite places in the city. It offers a fantastic bar with great views of the increasingly hip Queen Street East. Having lived in the area for 20 years, it has been amazing to watch the changes to the neighbourhood.”

Jane Eastmure Director of Sales, U.S. Market jeastmure@torcvb.com “On Saturday mornings I love to go to the St. Lawrence Market. The area comes alive with fresh offerings of produce, meats and cheeses from the nearby farms and local vendors. The flavours and tastes reflect the diversity of our city!”

At the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) 2018 Convening Leaders conference in Nashville, Business Events Toronto hosted clients, customers and attendees in the “Imaginarium”—a 5,000-sq.-ft. hospitality and activation lounge. It’s a comfortable space where industry professionals can relax, learn and network while experiencing the best of Toronto. “We typically rent a lot of furniture to create the environment,” says Kathryn Wakefield. “But this year we purchased most of the furniture instead, and all of it was donated to a shelter so that families who were trying to get back on their feet had help furnishing a new apartment or home.” The furniture was donated to Park Center, a community program that empowers those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

Mark Crawford Director, International Business Development mcrawford@torcvb.com “My favourite restaurant in Toronto is Susur Lee’s namesake restaurant, Lee. Located in the heart of the King Street West neighbourhood, its location offers lots of options for before and after dinner activities. If you go, don’t leave without trying Chef ’s signature, 19-ingredient Singapore Slaw!”

Kathryn Wakefield Director of Client Services kwakefield@torcvb.com “There are so many amazing places in our city, but my favourite has to be watching A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the outdoor amphitheatre in High Park.
