All Aboard Our Innovation Corridor The supercluster of tech companies and startups that stretch from Toronto through Brampton-Guelph-Kitchener-Waterloo is Canada’s Innovation Corridor – our own Silicon Valley. Ontario has plans to link it with all-day, two-way GO Transit service on electric trains in the near future. Here are just a few of the areas worth exploring: MOUNT PLEASANT VILLAGE. Mobility is key in this transit-focused urban community built around a new Mount Pleasant GO commuter train station, an inter-city rail line, transit, and great recreational paths and space to walk, bike and play. At its heart is Mount Pleasant Village Square, served by a library and community centre in a restored historic CPR train station. DON’T MISS: Look for unique goods sold by artisans at the Village Market every Thursday evening from June 22 to October 5. BRAMALEA. CASTLEMORE. This suburban area in the northeast corner of the city has several new residential developments, and is known for its large and luxurious estate homes built on the shores and ravines along the Humber River. CHURCHVILLE. This rural hamlet in the southwest corner of the city, deep in the Credit River Valley, has been designated a heritage community. First settled 200 years ago, a number of original timberframe buildings survive to this day. The community is steeped in history – some families have been here for generations. DOWNTOWN BRAMPTON. Brampton’s urban core is a welcoming, pedestrianfriendly destination for shopping, dining and enjoying vibrant cultural attractions any time of the year. Graced by tranquil parks, historic homes and tree-lined streets, it is also home to a growing number of residents drawn by all the great local amenities. Red & Co Food + Drink (341 Main St. N.), Chef Jason Rosso worked his first kitchen jobs in the same neighbourhood. 50TH ANNUAL EASTER TOURNAMENT When it comes to women’s hockey, there’s no place in the world that cheers as loud as Brampton – proud home of the largest and longest-running female hockey tournament, celebrating 50 years in 2017. The Canadettes Girls’ Hockey Association became a club in 1964, buoyed by avid local interest in ladies’ hockey. That year was also the opening chapter in what was then the Dominion Ladies’ Hockey Tournament. Over the next decades, the event grew into several locations until returning home to Brampton in 1989. This year’s tournament is touted as the largest ever, with more than 600 games played over three and a half days by teams of all ages and levels in arenas across the city. PEEL ART GALLERY, MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES (PAMA) PAMA is your first stop in downtown Brampton to learn more about the art, culture and heritage of Peel Region. This year also marks the 150th Celebration of Peel County and PAMA’s courthouse and jail buildings commemorated by great exhibitions, programs and events. Comprised of an art gallery, a museum and historic archives, PAMA offers visitors an authentic glimpse into the past and present, and historic insights based on personal lives and stories of the people of Peel Region. 5 THINGS ABOUT A 150-YEAR-OLD LANDMARK: Built in 1867, and closed in 1977, the Peel County Jail building is today integrated into PAMA – Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. 1 / LINK WITH THE PAST: Now that the jail is a museum, you can visit the Jail Gallery on the main floor. Go into one of three cells, close the metal door, and imagine what life was like for the prisoners and the people who worked here. 2 / CREATURE COMFORTS: PAMA characters Coco the Crow and Wellington the Raccoon were inspired by various animals that found shelter in the jail when unoccupied. 3 / SOUND DESIGN: The arched ceilings of the jail’s small cells were designed to create an echo and allow guards to hear prisoners from out in the hallway. 4 / CLOSE QUARTERS: While originally meant to hold 16 prisoners, one in each cell, the jail was often used to house the poor or destitute, so occupants were doubled up. 5 / GREAT ESCAPES: In the 110 years the jail operated, there were many escape attempts. Built circa 1840, the home is an excellent Canadian example of Georgian-style brick farmhouse. Restored to a mid-to-late 19th century appearance, the house operates as a museum and craft shop open from mid-February to mid-December on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 4pm. An exemplary example of the Italianate Style, this cultural heritage site was purchased by the City of Brampton in 2002, and has been restored and adapted as a premiere space for special events, weddings, conferences and meetings. CPR STATION RECONSTRUCTION: MOUNT PLEASANT VILLAGE Rebuilt and restored as the focal point of a new civic square at Mount Pleasant Village, the CPR Train Station represents an important waypoint in Brampton’s history. Designed by Charles Sorby and built in 1902, it was originally situated Downtown between Park and West Streets. This is where millions of flowers began their journey around the world, shipped from the greenhouses of “Flower Town,” and where thousands of soldiers crossed paths en route to both world wars. The city is located within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in a region that forms our country’s largest and most dynamic urban centre. Brampton is conveniently situated at the northwest boundary of Toronto, right next to Toronto Pearson International Airport – Canada’s largest and busiest international travel hub. Brampton is also easily accessible via major highways and is only 30 minutes from downtown Toronto by car (pending traffic), local transit or rail.
