BOATING AND SAILING
Rugged coastlines, tree-covered islands and islets, idyllic coves and bays, and protected marine parks — Victoria and Vancouver Island offer some of the most spectacular boating and sailing opportunities in the world. Numerous guided charters and sailing tours are available for day and multi-day cruises, as well as lessons and certification courses. CYCLING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING
Named the Cycling Capital of Canada, Victoria is an excellent destination for year-round cycle touring and features cycle-friendly streets and an extensive network of designated cycling routes including the rural Peninsula Trail System, the urban Seaside
Cycling Route, and the 55-kilometre Galloping Goose Trail, which follows an old railbed from downtown Victoria to the West Shore communities. Mountain biking is also a major sport here and the rugged terrain around Victoria is perfect for it. Active clubs and their members help maintain Vancouver Island’s numerous trails, which range from easy family tracks to difficult tests of physical fitness and technical know-how. All ferries that service Vancouver Island allow passengers to bring bicycles aboard for a small fee. Cycle tours and rentals for groups are available. DIVING
The wealth of natural dive sites, shipwrecks, and artificial reefs in Vancouver Island waters are world renowned among divers. Top diving areas include Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, the Ogden Point Breakwater, the Saanich Inlet, and the artificial reefs off Sidney. Although a year-round activity, diving is particularly recommended in the winter when cooler temperatures increase water clarity. Guided adventures and lessons are available. FISHING
Victoria and Vancouver Island have a decades-long reputation for outstanding fishing. The Pacific Ocean teems with salmon, halibut, and shellfish, while the many lakes, rivers, and streams nurture steelhead, trout, and cutthroat. Fishing is an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors, whether on a saltwater trip, or on a hiking and fly-fishing trip. Guided fishing adventures, including multiday packages, are widely available.

Victoria is blessed with moderate temperatures year-round, boasting an average of 2,183 hours of sunshine annually and an eight-month frost-free season. The average monthly rainfall is less than 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) in the summer and 5 centimetres (2 inches) in the winter. Ocean breezes prevent summer days from becoming too hot, but can cool off summer evenings; therefore, a sweater or light jacket is recommended in the summer. Although winters are mild and rarely include snow, warmer clothing is recommended between November and March.
