Victoria Philharmonic Choir UVic Centre Farquhar Auditorium Thu, Oct. 30, 8 p.m. Sat, Nov. 1, 2:30 p.m.

Haydn’s The Seasons Conductor Simon Capet Anne Grimm, Soprano Ben Butterfield, Tenor Bruce Kelly, Baritone Composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) wrote many masterpieces in his prolific life, but two of his greatest were his final oratorios The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801), both lush, beautiful and stirring works for large fourpart choir, soloists and orchestra. Both were a culmination of all his musical talent and met with instant success, but at the time, the biblical theme of God’s Creation was deemed, even by Papa Haydn himself, as more noble and worthy of musical immortality than the cyclical changing of the weather. Now in 21st century, climate change and global warming are among the world’s most pressing concerns. Haydn’s gorgeous work resonates anew as a profound and moving testament to the power and importance of the seasons’ interplay with mankind’s wellbeing. Join conductor Simon Capet and the acclaimed 80-voice Victoria Philharmonic Choir for two performances of the fabulous work at the University of Victoria’s Farquhar Auditorium. The work also features soloists Anne Grimm, soprano, Ben Butterfield, tenor, and Bruce Kelly, baritone and a 40-piece professional orchestra. Conductor Simon Capet is an exciting and dynamic young talent who has been bringing innovative and rewarding performances to Victoria audiences. Join the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, too, on Sat, Dec. 13, 8 p.m. for an intimate Christmas Concert First Metropolitan Church, 932 Balmoral Road For more information see www.vpchoir.ca or call 250.370-SING Tickets available in a wide range of prices to suit every budget. Craigdarroch Castle presents Giggling Iguana Productions October 16 – 31 Craigdarroch Castle and Giggling Iguana Productions continue their tradition of Halloween spectacles with an original adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the same vein as The Fall of the House of Usher and The War of the Worlds, the magnificent interiors and grounds of Craigdarroch become the setting for Wilde’s tale of a beautiful young man who descends into narcissism and corruption while physically untouched by his sins. Instead his painted portrait reveals each and every flaw which his hedonism heaps upon his soul. Considered the last true work of classic gothic horror fiction, The Picture of Dorian Gray is sure to send a tingle down the spine and a twinge in everyone’s conscience.
