NOTES FROM THE MANAGER The Most Anticipated Spring in our History
Happy Spring, everyone! While the weather is still transitioning, we are gearing up for the most exciting spring/summer in recent history. The Club is in the process of building its first Fitness/Wellness Center, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of June. This project will change the way our members and the community view our Club. Your Board of Directors and management team are committed to providing you with year-round value. Drop that gym membership and use your Club’s brand new Fitness/ Wellness Center for your routine morning workout, your late-night cardio or your group sessions such as yoga and/or zumba! Can’t make it during normal business hours? No problem! The Fitness/Wellness Center will be open 24/7, so you can use it when you need it. Stay tuned for updates on this project. With all the buzz around the community surrounding this project and other initiatives, we have been fortunate to have a very successful recruitment year thus far, so you should be seeing lots of new faces around the Club. Many of these new members have children and are eager to get involved with Club programming and activities, so please join me in welcoming them. Speaking of programming, if you have not signed your kids up for a summer program, please do so, as they are filling up fast! Our Sailing Program enjoyed over 120 participants last year (a record number) and is poised to have at least that many again this year thanks to a very talented group of coaches and a focused structure. Our Tennis Program continues to grow rapidly with the addition of our new sub-irrigated clay courts and four championship pickleball courts. Tennis Pro Dmitri Diakonov plans to continue to grow the sport of pickleball as a complement to tennis and is now offering lessons and group drills. Our Day Camp returned last year after a two-year hiatus and features an all-inclusive Club experience mixing in athletics, swimming, and even a little bit of boating courtesy of our sailing coaches. If you have a young child or grandchild, this is the perfect place for them. Lastly but not least, the Swim Team is looking for dedicated swimmers to enjoy some healthy competition between neighboring clubs and get a great workout this summer. Perhaps encourage your child to try something new this year? It is always fun to meet new friends and discover new passions. Smooth sailing,
Aaron Wagner

COMMODORE’S CORNER Spring is in the air and can be felt throughout the Club. We had a busy shutdown period during which the staff and contractors worked on needed repairs, beginning the process of maintenance and renovation of existing spaces. Their work included decluttering and removing tons of obsolete detritus, adding a new break area for our valued staff, and beginning the process of moving the Accounting Department to their new office space, putting them in closer proximity to co-workers. Additional work will continue beyond the shutdown. You will see a lot of activity in and around the Grog Shop as it gets an overhaul with a new look and new contents. The old favorites will remain, but Aaron has promised a greater variety of new items as well. You will also see work taking place to prepare for the Fitness and Wellness Center (FWC) which is a three-phase project. With the donations we have in place, we will work on two of these phases – as mentioned above the relocation and construction of both the employee breakroom and Accounting offices. A committee, led by Director Knapp, is working diligently to ensure this will be a great addition to the Club’s services. The Board and management team have also been busy during the shutdown. The Board met offsite and worked to update the Strategic Plan which I encourage you to read on the members-only portion of the Website. You will also find the 2017-18 Audited Financial statement on the website. I am happy to report that the Auditor expressed no significant concerns. The Board will be following up later in the summer with another member survey. Results of the survey will be critical for the Board to gauge its performance, member satisfaction and future direction of the Club. By now, most of you will have downloaded and started to familiarize yourself with the new GPYC mobile app. I would like to thank the team that worked diligently to launch the app. Our goal is to enhance and simplify the member experience, and we hope to expand upon its capabilities as time goes on. As the 2019 boating season begins, you will notice new harbor entrance buoys in place. With all the added water activities, these will hopefully improve safety for ingress/egress. I am also pleased to inform you the Board unanimously agreed to reassign $5 of the monthly member capital dues to a dedicated Harbor Fund, starting in March. This is just the beginning of the Board’s effort and commitment to a dedicated fund for the sole purpose of addressing the Harbor. We will be looking at other opportunities to further fund the harbor as it is imperative in fulfilling our mission statement and is the bedrock of this Club. As always, your committees continue to work diligently on all fronts, and I continue to be impressed with their commitment to this Club. I am truly grateful. We continue to work on being your Club for All Seasons. I encourage you to share your ideas, praises or suggestions, as it is all part of the process of our commitment to continuous improvement. On a final note, please remember to make reservations early for Easter Brunch held on April 21 and plan on attending the Family Activity Day on April 27 from 1-3 p.m. Respectfully
Commodore Ilja J. Vreeken

STAFFSPOTLIGHT By Aaron Kessler Wagner
Executive Sous Chef Domonique Morsello
This month, we are featuring one of our newest employees, Domonique Morsello. Domonique was hired as our Executive Sous Chef working directly under Executive Chef Colby Newman. Domonique comes to us with a wealth of culinary knowledge and a background filled with industry experience and education. Not only has she worked in various types of kitchens, she has also been involved in culinary competitions and workshops such as Farm to Plate, Butchery and Molecular Gastronomy. Some of her past highlights were Cinco Lagos as sous chef and pastry chef, Toasted Oak Grill and Market as banquet chef, The Village Club as executive sous chef and executive pastry chef, and La Cucina Del Vino as executive chef and pastry chef.
have never done before followed by dinner at a restaurant they have not dined at before! Domonique proclaimed, “On one of our recent outings I discovered I’m not as bad at golf as I originally thought! It’s funny too because now when we go out to dine my kids inherently think it’s their obligation to be food critics and give me
Morsello is all about family. When I asked her who she would pick to have lunch with (living or deceased), she picked her grandmother Jerrie Lee Morsello who passed away in January 2018. Domonique loved spending hours with her, trading recipes and stories. Please help me welcome Domonique to the Club by stopping by and saying hello to her. She is excited to meet everyone and looks forward to a bright future as our Executive Sous Chef.
The opportunity to work at GPYC was appealing to Domonique for many reasons. Growing up in Saint Clair Shores, she spent a lot of time on the water and has always appreciated the beauty of the club often using it as a landmark to find her way back to harbor. After learning more about the day-to-day operations of the club and the tenured people who run it, she was easily sold on the opportunity. “It was incredibly refreshing to see that the club was progressive in its vision for the future, and that is a vision I eagerly bought into,” said Morsello. “For me, coming to the club was an opportunity to lay down some roots and truly grow within a company that I feel genuinely wants to cultivate its employees to provide the ultimate experience, a company with integrity and vision.”

Continue Your Family Traditions
Domonique’s hobbies outside of GPYC include many things. She is an avid cookbook collector and is in the process of writing her own. She appreciates art of all kinds, outdoor activities such as boating, biking, yoga, horse racing, sports and travel. She is a mom to three girls (Adrianna 12, Sophia 10, Joscelyn 6), and they celebrate her Monday nights off by hosting a reoccurring date night they appropriately named “My Girl Mondays” where they try and do something that they

Submissions for The MAST can be sent to Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org. The May MAST Deadline is Thursday, April 4.
Register Online for GPYC Summer Programs
Registering your child or grandchild for multiple summer programs at the GPYC is now easier than ever before. The Club is no longer using paper registration forms. Junior Sailing, Swim Team, Swim Lessons and Day Camp will all be using the same online registration software called TeamSnap. Sailing used TeamSnap last year, with great success. The software allows the coaches to communicate effectively with parents, handle invoicing efficiently and keep important information such as allergies or other health information right at their fingertips. Parents can sign up for Junior Tennis via email. All of the information you need, as well as registration links, is available at www.gpyc. org/fun. If for any reason the registration links are not active for certain programs, we will post information on that page as to the expected date for when registration will be available.
2019 Summer Day Camp
NEWS
GPYC’s Day Camp will be offered for eight weeks this summer, from June 17 through August 9, for children ages 4-12. Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser, who did an excellent job reviving and growing the Club’s program last year, is returning with plans for a busy and exciting summer. Madeleine is a teacher at Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Executive Team Building Sail Program
GPYC corporate executives and human resource professionals: consider the GPYC Executive Team Building Sail Program as a way to inspire, improve communication, build awareness and improve leadership skills within the management team of an organization. For more information about how this program can benefit your team, contact Sailing Director Wally Cross at wcross@gpyc.org.

‘Discussion Pointes’ Series
Featuring Members/Authors Gail Howe & Jason Grobbel Wednesday, April 10 | 7 p.m. Ideas matter. That is why the Club is introducing a new program called “Discussion Pointes.” Discussion Pointes is a monthly forum where experts and opinion leaders will examine a wide variety of topics including health, science, our community and other key issues that are important to our membership. You will have an opportunity to learn from these experts and ask your questions about things such as the Lake St. Clair water levels and the threats to our cherished resource and many other relevant topics. It is an opportunity for you learn and share your points because your ideas matter. The “Discussion Pointes” Series continues in April with an author highlight. If you have ever wanted to write or publish a book, or are interested in those in our community who have successfully published, this Discussion Pointe meeting is for you. Our very own Gail Howe and Jason Grobbel will share insights on their literary works. Gail is the author of Rosaline’s Big Dream, a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book. Gail will share her inspiration, challenges in this competitive space of children’s books and how she self-published this award winning book. Jason is the author of Leading America Back to Work, Reimagining Today’s Workplace. He will also share his inspiration for writing this book as well as the key to unlocking the potential of a business’s workforce. His book provides
a blueprint of how a business can tap into previously unavailable sources of efficient labor along with providing a tremendous opportunity for economic growth. Learn how these creative authors navigated from an idea to a successful printed literary work. Books will be on sale before and after the discussion, and the authors will be available for signing copies. Bring a friend and come listen to Gail and Jason in the Main Dining Room. MATTERS Welcome Back to the Club MEMBERSHIP Good news! We are off to a good start recruiting members. As of the beginning of the fiscal year, October 2018, 25 members have joined the GPYC family. During that same time period last year, we had recruited 15 members. Our best months of recruiting are still ahead of us. You should all be aware by now that every member who refers a candidate, who then becomes a member, will receive a $500 food and beverage credit – so keep the referrals coming! Management is equally focused on retaining members. There has been a lot of planning and prepping over the Club closing to deliver a number of fresh changes and events this spring and summer. This fastpaced society is often referred to as “The Experience Economy.” In today’s culture, many people do not consider physical
Children’s Tennis
possessions as important as memorable experiences. The GPYC is fully aware of this and takes it seriously. There are many areas of the Club where you will see a facelift and change in service. From the pool deck, Grog Shop, children’s menu, and special programs and events, members of all ages are sure to find new experiences here at the GPYC. More than ever, members have stepped up and have been very involved to assist in making unforgettable member experiences. The hope is that you will all walk away from a GPYC visit this spring and summer with a story – a memorable experience that will build GPYC pride. This can only lead to a happy club and better retention! Susan Hughes Membership Director

SPORTS Up Your Alley
We are nearing the end of the 20182019 bowling season. Scores are really outstanding the past couple months. In the Monday Men’s League, Tom Stephenson came within two strikes of perfection. Tom started the game with the first 10 strikes, only to come up short on his 11th ball and ended with a 288 game. He also rolled his highest career series of 714. Tom also followed up the next week with a 277 high game. He definitely doesn’t want the season to end. In the Wednesday Night League, Dea Welsh also bowled a career high game of 230. She ended with an actual series of 595. Not to be outdone, Ellen Starks, bowling in the Thursday Night League started with a spare then she proceeded to bowl eight strikes in a row to finish with a 257 game. These are just some of the highlights that are coming out of the GPYC Bowling program. I really want to congratulate all of the bowlers for their participation in the program.

In the other semifinals, Joan Retford will be up against Marilyn Stephenson. Bowlers use their league scores with handicap to determine who moves on into the Finals. Good luck to all of the Semifinalists. Upcoming events are the Team Club Championship on April 17 and our annual awards banquet on May 4. Also, just a reminder that we have open bowling every Saturday from 4-10 p.m. We will also have open bowling on Friday, April 12 and Friday, April 26. Junior Sailing Update
Learn to Sail: In order to keep growing and to provide the best instruction possible to our newest sailors, the Learn to Sail program will be offered in two week sessions, and divided up into Level I (beginners), Level II (intermediate) and Learn to Race, a new class that will help prepare kids who are interested in our racing program. Adventure Sailing and STEM camp: This year, we will offer the adventure sailing program in two-week sessions instead of four weeks, and the last session will be a STEM camp. The STEM camp, offered July 29 - August 9, will utilize US Sailing’s REACH program and covers topics like simple machines, water quality and testing, wind and weather, forces on a sail and water safety. Session Information: Our sessions for learn to sail and adventure sailing will be two weeks long with the option of signing up for the entire summer. They are as follows: Session I: June 17-28 Session II: July 1-12 (no class on July 4) Session III: July 29- August 9 The week of July 14-15 is a drop-in week
for our non racers, and is included if signing up for the full summer. It can also be registered for separately. Our drop-in week will be a fun week where sailors can utilize the different boats GPYC has and engage in fun activities like swimming and windsurfing. There is no sailing the week of July 22. GPYC will be hosting the USODA nationals. Racing Team: Our racing team will continue to offer four-week and full summer sessions this summer. Kindersailing: This summer we will be offering a week-long, half-day session for 5- and 6-year olds. It will fill up fast so if you are interested make sure you register early! This is a perfect introduction to sailing for younger kids that will focus on basic fundamentals and water safety. This year, to ensure that we have enough coaches on staff, there will be a registration deadline of June 1. After that date, spots cannot be guaranteed. Please make sure you are signed up before then. For all program and registration information, please visit http://www. gpycsailing.org. You can also follow GPYC Sailing on Facebook. HARBOR Spring is finally here, and we all know that means boat launching season has arrived. Harbormaster Alex Turner and his staff have been working diligently on improvements to prepare GPYC Harbor for the season.
As you make plans to move your boat into the harbor, please contact Alex to inform him of the date and time you plan to do so. This will allow the staff to be ready to assist you. You can call the Harbor Office at (313) 640-7000. Water will not be turned on until May 1, weather permitting. Please keep in mind that due to high water and the utilization of the barge for maintenance, parts of the harbor may be blocked while dock repairs, etc. are taking place. Don’t forget to attend this year’s Great Lakes Boating Festival on May 17-19. It is a wonderful way to support the Grosse Pointe Youth Nautical Education Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting national and international
HAPPENINGS
amateur sailing, maritime arts, education, water safety and community improvements. Also, boaters will be notified if their boat needs to be relocated temporarily for the festival weekend.
Safety Course will be taking place on Saturday, May 18, and a Youth & Mates Hands-On Boat Handling Class will be held on Monday, June 3. See page 9 for more information.
A few harbor etiquette items of interest to keep in mind: - Boats leaving the harbor have the right of way. - The GPYC burgee must be flown when leaving or entering the harbor. - American flags to be flown from 0800 to sunset. - Fishing is not allowed in the harbor unless you are fishing from your boat or participating in a GPYC Fishing Rodeo. - Swimming is not allowed in the harbor due to the risk of Electric Shock Drowning. We will be noting harbor etiquette items on a monthly basis to assist everyone in having a safe boating season.
Your thoughts, concerns and comments are always welcome. Safe Boating, Michael Meda Harbor Chairman
