NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Believe in the Magic of Christmas...
They say, “there’s nothing like New York City during the holiday season.” I beg to differ! In my opinion, the best place in the world during the holidays is the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Our Club is a magical place during the holiday season with lush greenery, sparkling white lights, and decorations in the spirit of Christmas. Many of you may not know this, but most of the decorations you see are planned and executed by volunteer members. Special thanks go out to Elisabeth Meda for leading the charge and to all the ladies who prep the greenery and appoint the rooms. I am pleased to announce that we are offering a brand new event this year. The Club will be hosting Christmas Eve Dinner on Monday, December 24. Reservations are required for this event and are available between 4-7 p.m. We hope to see all of the families at the Club prior to preparing for Santa’s arrival at home. In between all of the holiday magic, I would like to invite you to experience the newly renovated Bowling Recreation Center (BRC). This facility is not just for bowlers – it is for everyone! The BRC Bar comes alive during the weekend football games. With the University of Michigan Wolverines fighting for the College Football Playoff, we will have big crowds down there. Good luck to all of my fellow Wolverine fans (Go Blue!). Looking for a quieter place to go? A place that is for adults only and offers a unique after-dinner experience? Look no further than the Tower Pub. The Pub is open every Friday and Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. Remember the days when you would walk up to the Pub only to find it was closed or reserved for a private event? That will never happen again because the Club has committed to providing our membership with this amenity. Private events can still be booked on other days of the week, but Fridays and Saturdays are strictly reserved for our adult members only. To spice it up, we will be hosting monthly trivia challenges up there courtesy of Quizzo Entertainment and an array of “under the conversation” musical entertainment. Check your Weekly Buzz for updates and join fellow members for an after-dinner hummer or a hot totte. No matter what your wish is this holiday season, the GPYC will grant it. I wish everyone a very safe, happy and healthy Holiday. Smooth sailing,

COMMODORE’S CORNER Our Club for All Seasons!
I am honored to serve as your 86th Commodore. Kelley and I are passionate about the Club and elevating its cache as the premiere yacht club, with year-round activities and services. To this end, the Board, Committees and Staff are committed to meeting this challenge. Thanks to the leadership of our Past Commodores, Boards and with special thanks to Commodore Sean Schotthoefer and Lady Kristen, we intend to capitalize on the recently completed projects for an outstanding year of events and activities. Please read through the MAST each month to discover new events and activities as they unfold throughout the year! This year’s Board welcomes the addition of two new Directors – Bruce Knapp and Robert Weiland. We look forward to their contributions – Congratulations. Success is only possible with the support of our Committees that are led by member volunteers who are also passionate about the Club. I encourage you to seek out a committee that may be of interest, it’s a great way to make new friends and have an impact on the Club. Watch The Weekly Buzz for committee membership opportunities. In the annual meeting, we discussed the direction we will be taking to shore up the financial position of the Club. The Board is mindful of the necessity for financial prudence while not limiting the services and experience of the Club. Our capital expenditures and philanthropy activity will continue to follow the strategic plan with guidance from member feedback. A top priority remains the harbor upgrade along with bringing the Clubhouse and grounds up to world-class standards. If and when funding becomes available, projects under consideration include the addition of a wellness/fitness area, upgrading the Terrace and Gazebo, refurbishing the moat bridge and front circle drive, renovating the Grog Shop, improving campus illumination and adding sunshade and other amenities by the Family Recreation Center. Kelley and I would like to thank everyone for their support and wish you and your families the best of Holidays and healthful coming New Year. Respectfully,
Commodore Ilja J. Vreeken EXECUTIVE PORTRAITURE

STAFFSPOTLIGHT By Aaron Wagner
Catering Coordinator Karleen Bacha
This month I chose to “spotlight” a rather new face at the Club, our Catering Coordinator Karleen Bacha. Ms. Bacha came to us after working for Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn where she was also in the position of event
coordinator. Karleen has brought with her a contagious positive attitude and almost immediately fit right into our Club culture. She and Catering Director Barb Walkowski are improving processes and are looking to set records on banquet sales! She is
looking forward to building relationships with staff and members as she works to create memorable events. Next time you stop by the Club, please say hello to Karleen in the Catering Office.
