ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDER OF ROTARY

Paul Percy Harris was the founder of Rotary, the world’s first truly international service club. Paul founded a different type of organization, based on informality and exclusivity that the fraternalist clubs could never attain. In his own words, “Rotary offered fraternity without rituals, passwords and secrets”.

Paul Harris was born in Racine Wisconsin, on 19 April 1868. Significantly, at three years old, Paul moved to Wallingford, Vermont where he grew up in the care of his paternal grandparents. His upbringing in the small New England town of the late nineteenth century would shape his destiny in years to come.

Paul would eventually marry a young Scottish lady on July 2nd 1910. Jean Thomson (1881-1963) was born and brought up in Edinburgh.

He received his L.L.B. (Bachelor of Laws) from the University of Iowa. Paul Harris was, in addition, given the Degree of Doctor honors causa from the College of Law in Lima, Peru. After University, Paul Harris decided to take five years out to see the world and worked in a variety of short.term jobs.

After his five years of travel and adventures he arrived in Chicago to practice law in 1896. One evening in the summer of 1900, Paul visited the suburban home of a professional friend. Initially, Harris, like so many other country boys in the big city had struggled to make friends. After dinner, as they strolled through his neighborhood, Paul’s friend introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores, referring to each person by their first name. It was here Paul conceived the idea of a club that could recapture some of the friendly spirit among businessmen in that small, rural New England community he knew and loved.

On 23 February, 1905, Paul Harris formed the first club with three other businessmen: Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant; Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer; and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Schiele, a life-long personal friend, became the first President of the club. Paul Harris named the new club “Rotary” because members met in rotation at their various places of business. Very soon Paul became convinced that the Rotary club could be developed into a more important national and international service movement and he unilaterally strove to extend Rotary to other cities.

Harris died on January 27th, 1947. His vision lives on in all Rotarians. From the fellowship of the weekly meeting to the varied charity and community events, his hopes and aspirations continue and surely as Paul himself would say, there is even more for Rotary to achieve in the future. Paul Harris’ death saw the beginning of the Rotary Foundation as a mark of tribute to the man, the Foundation is the largest private charity foundation in the world with a very simple aim to do good.

Rotary Club of South Queensferry, Lothian, Scotland

McInally lauded Rotary’s ability to adapt technologically during the COVID19 pandemic, saying the approach should continue and be combined with the best of our past practices as Rotary seeks to grow and increase engagement.

“We have learned there is a willingness within communities to care for one another,” he says, “and we must ensure that we encourage people who have recently embraced the concept of volunteering to join us to allow them to continue giving service.”

With better engagement, McInally says, “We will grow Rotary both by way of membership and in our ability to provide meaningful service.”

He adds, “Membership is the lifeblood of our organization. I would encourage the use of the flexibility now available to establish new-style clubs that would appeal to a different demographic.”

McInally, a graduate of dental surgery at the University of Dundee, owned and operated his own dental practice in Edinburgh. He was the chair of the East of Scotland branch of the British Paedodontic Society and has held various academic positions. He has also served as a Presbytery elder, chair of Queensferry Parish Congregational Board, and commissioner to the church’s general assembly.

A Rotary member since 1984, McInally has been president and vice president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. He has also served Rotary International as a director and as member or chair of several committees. He is currently an adviser to the 2022 Houston Convention Committee and chair of the Operations Review Committee.

McInally and his wife, Heather, are Major Donors and Benefactors of The Rotary Foundation. They are also members of the Bequest Society.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR 2022-2024

Drew Kessler

Rotary Club of North Rockland, NY

Drew Kessler is Senior Vice President of the Commercial Real Estate division at M&T Bank.

Drew has led numerous professional real estate organizations, serving as president of both the Rockland County Board of Realtors and the 10,000-member Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors (HGAR) as well as director for both the New York State Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.

While At HGAR, he launched the HG Realtor Foundation. A passionate fundraiser, Drew has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for organizations including The Rotary Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes and Feeding Westchester.

Drew joined Rotary in 2001, at the age of 20. He went on to serve as president of the Rotary Club of North Rockland at age 25 – at that time the youngest president in the club’s more than 80-year history. At age 32, he served as District Governor for Rotary District 7210. “For anyone who says that you have to be retired to serve in these positions, I’d like to show that there is another path,” says Drew.

He has served Rotary International on the Young Past District Governor’s Committee as well as representative to the Council on Legislation and president’s representative. Kessler also has served in numerous Zone leadership positions, including general chair of the Zone 28/32 Summit & Symposium, assistant Rotary coordinator for Zone 32 and general chair for the Mid-North East president’s elect training seminar. Committed to continuity and collaboration, he is a member of the District 7210 Executive Board, a committee he helped establish that is made up of both past and present district leaders that collaborate to the lead the District.

As a husband and father to five children, Drew prioritizes finding a way to incorporate family into Rotary events, projects, and meetings whenever possible; all of his children have been touched by Rotary either through Earlyact, Interact, RYLA and Rotary Youth Exchange. Kessler and his wife Vicki – also an active Rotarian – reside in Hopewell Junction, New York.

Russ Jones

Rotary Club of Plymouth, MI

In 2003, Russ Jones joined Plymouth Rotary. He has been active in his club including BBQ chairman in 2009, club president 2015.16 and as a club board director. He is currently a director for the Plymouth Rotary Foundation. In addition to serving District 6400 as Area 5 Assistant Governor since 2018, Russ has been active in other roles including District Governor Golf Outing chair, multiple District Conference committees and District Rotary Foundation Committee since 2017. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and a COG Award recipient. Russ attended the Rotary International conventions in Atlanta and Toronto.

Russ’ professional experience includes 25 years in corporate financial and strategic management. Following his corporate career, Russ pursued a career as a Certified Financial Planner® and retired December 31, 2016. Russ has been married to Barb for almost 47 years and they have been Canton residents since 1975. They have 3 sons and are blessed with six grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys many outdoor activities including fishing, camping, walking, and hiking. He also continues a futile effort to play better golf.

Dr. Nick Krayacich

District Governor 2024-2025

As a family physician, Nick runs his own medical centre in LaSalle, Ontario. He has served on the board of directors for Hearts Together for Haiti and HANWASH (Haiti National Water, Hygiene and Sanitation – a Rotary led initiative to bring clean water to the entire country).

He proudly served as the president of the Rotary Club of LaSalle Centennial in 2012-2013, and 2015-2016. Nick has also served District 6400 in many roles. He has been a featured speaker at numerous Rotary events.

He is passionate about volunteer travel and has participated as a Rotary Foundation Alumni on missions to the Brazilian Amazon, Haiti and Tanzania. He led a Vocational Training Team to Ethiopia in 2017 and again in 2018 to train medical professionals in the six areas of focus.

Nick and his wife PRIP Jennifer Jones share a love of travel, cycling, golf and time spent at their family cottage. They also share a thirst for adventure, having scaled the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa in 2009. As champions of The Rotary Foundation, they are members of the Arch C. Klumph Society, the Paul Harris Society and are charter members of the Bequest Society.

Linda Morrow

District Governor 2025-2026

Linda has been a member of Windsor-Roseland since 2011. Prior to joining Rotary, Linda traveled with PDG Aruna Koushik to India as part of an NID project. As she often says, “I went to India a curious traveler; I came back from India a Rotarian.” In addition to traveling to India, Linda has been to Guatemala twice and was also a member of the vocational training team to Ghana.

Linda served as club president in 2014-15, District Trainer in 2016-17 and 2021-22, and is currently co-chair of the Vocational Training Team committee. She has presented at several district events, co-led a workshop at the international convention in Toronto, and recently co-authored an article for the Rotary magazine.

Linda has worked in education, process improvement, and change management for more than twenty years. She is also an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Windsor. She holds two bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree in communication studies, and a PhD in instructional design and performance improvement.

Linda enjoys travel, music, and exploring the possibilities. A self-professed “learning geek,” she recently started taking guitar lessons, and in her next life she wants to be a rock star.

The Dick Hedke Memorial Award honors the memory of Richard C. Hedke who was a member of the Detroit Rotary Club and served as Rotary International President in 1946.1947. THE FRANK DEVLYN EXEMPLARY PUBLIC IMAGE AWARD

This award was established by the Rotary Club of Windsor. Roseland to commemorate the 2000-2001 Presidential theme “Create Awareness, Take Action!” This annual public image award recognizes a club for their exemplary and on.going public image efforts throughout the entire Rotary year. All clubs are invited to apply and are encouraged to assemble materials for submission as the Rotary year unfolds.

H. WILLIAM IVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This legacy award honors Past Rotary International Director and Past Rotary Foundation Trustee H. William Ives for his extraordinary contribution to Rotary International and to The Rotary Foundation particularly in the area of polio eradication and Polio Plus. This District 6400 award is intended to recognize a single Rotarian for their exemplary service over an extended period of time.

The COG Award is the premier award of District 6400 and is designed to recognize individuals for their exemplary past and continuing service to the District. Just as the “cog” represents an integral working part of the Rotary logo wheel, the individual represents a vital moving part of the Rotary Wheel of Service. The COG Award is designed to recognize an individual, currently active, for outstanding service in one or more of the five avenues of service including continued service to the individual’s club. Nomination must originate from the club and be accompanied by a supporting resolution. The District Governor, Past District Governors and District Governors Elect and Nominee are ineligible. Super District 6400 salutes the following individuals for a job well done!
