It has been a busy time in and around the Club.

The inaugural Christmas Eve Buffet was a resounding success with well over 200 attendees.

Kudos to the staff for this new Club tradition and their relentless drive to make GPYC our Club for all seasons. January started off with a bang - the Icy Hot! Ladies Fashion Show sold out early and will surely be the hot ticket for next year. The Winter Festival has become a can’t miss event with fun activities for all ages throughout the weekend. In the coming months, keep checking The Mast and The Weekly Buzz for information about newly added events and be sure to sign up early!

The Club has a scheduled housekeeping shutdown from February 18 through March 14. The Bowling Recreation Center and Marine Activity Center will remain open. General Manager Aaron Wagner, along with his staff, are working on food and beverage alternatives during this time, as employees and contractors will be busy throughout the Club working on refurbishing chairs/tables, cleaning carpets, upgrading the kitchen and much more. A club reciprocation list is available on page 6 should you wish to visit an alternative venue during this time. We will reopen for dinner on Friday, March 15, followed by the Back to the Club Party on Saturday, March 16.

On your next visit to the Club, I hope you will take time to welcome Special Events Director Kathy VandeLaare who recently joined the GPYC team. Kathy brings a wealth of experience to her position and is already planning new events to enhance our membership experience. Welcome aboard, Kathy!

Special thanks to our member volunteers who are working diligently on club committees. From harbor upkeep, new events, club heritage awareness, new member recruitment, and facilities improvements to legal and financial oversight, committees are an essential part of our vibrant club culture. Committee members’ efforts support and ensure our Club continues to evolve and flourish.

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER

Look No Further Than GPYC for Winter Fun

The holidays are behind us, and we are now in the middle of another Michigan winter.

Many Michiganders go South during these months, but our members are finding plenty of activity here at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Our Paddle Tennis Launch Party was a great success. The Club is also now offering open play days where you can drop in and join fellow members, as well as mixed league nights for the more competitive players. If you have not experienced the Paddle Tennis Center, make plans to visit and play. It is a very easy game to learn, and the Paddle Tennis Center is a nice venue for friends looking to get together.

The Paddle Tennis Center is not the only outdoor activity at the Club. This year, trap shooting at the Marine Activity Center has really taken off, especially with the mild weather. The Club has several guns for you to use, and we serve hearty chili and beverages to help you to remain energized between shooting. Each week, we post the top scorers in The Weekly Buzz. Take your best shot and see if you might be one of them!

Looking to stay cozy inside? Look no further than the recently renovated Bowling Recreation Center (BRC). The BRC just received all-new furniture including comfortable high top seats, high top tables, and seating for the BRC Teen Center, which features multiple gaming consoles and screens for maximum fun. The BRC is your hot spot for game time with all new TVs suspended above the lanes and an ideal bar setting. Look for scheduling in The Weekly Buzz for March Madness NCAA Basketball in late March/early April. Please note that the BRC will remain open during our Annual Shutdown. We are committed to being your year-round Club and are pleased to provide this venue during our annual renovations and projects.

When we reopen officially, the Club and the Membership Activities Committee have planned a Back to the Club Night that will be unforgettable. Being that it takes place on St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, the event will feature a St. Patrick’s theme and have fantastic entertainment, cocktails, and, of course, the finest culinary creations for your enjoyment. Make your reservations now before this event sells out.

Meet our newest addition to the GPYC Team, Claire Rundquist. Claire graduated in May of 2018 from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in Advertising and Public Relations with a minor in Marketing.

Since then she has moved back home to Grosse Pointe. Claire is working in the Membership Department alongside Membership Director Susan Hughes and

Communications Manager Anna Swartz and hopes to gain experience in marketing and assisting with member events. One of her current projects is to scan in all of the member files and past meeting minutes for accurate and safe archiving.

She is bringing us into the modern times!

NEWS GPYC Recognized as a Distinguished Club

Grosse Pointe Yacht Club has been selected as a Distinguished Club. Clubs are determined by a thorough vetting and awarding process conducted by BoardRoom magazine’s Distinguished Clubs team of industry specialists. To be a Distinguished Club is to be one of only a few, highly select private clubs that are recognized as providing a member experience at a level attained by only the finest clubs in the world.

GPYC Announces Fitness/ Wellness Center Project for 2019

On December 19, 2018, the Club unveiled designs for a Fitness/Wellness Center (FWC) to be completed in 2019. The Club will fund this project through donations and is pleased to report that the membership has shown great support already.

The FWC will be located on the first floor adjacent to the Mariners Courtyard and will feature three convenient points of entry including easy access to the Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms. Amenities will include spinning bikes, treadmills, free weights and other cardio equipment. The FWC will be open 24 hours a day and will provide towels, as well as beverages and small food items in a grab-and-go format.

Interested in Committee Membership?

GPYC committees work with the Board of Directors and staff to assure the Club’s services, activities and amenities meet the needs of our members. Members who serve in this capacity find they have fun and benefit by forming new relationships that make their GPYC experience more meaningful. If you are interested, the Membership, Communication, Athletics and Member Activities committees are all accepting additional volunteers for 2019. Executive Team Building Sail Program

GPYC corporate executives and human resource professionals: consider the GPYC Executive Team Building Sail Program as a way to inspire, improve communication, build awareness and improve leadership skills within the management team of an organization. These half-day or full-day sail courses are held at the Marine Activity Center and on Lake St. Clair. 2019 Summer Day Camp

GPYC’s Day Camp will be offered for eight weeks this summer, from June 17 through August 9, for children ages 4-12. Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser, who did an excellent job reviving and growing the Club’s program last year, is returning with plans for a busy and exciting summer. Madeleine is a teacher at Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods. Check upcoming issues of The Weekly Buzz for online registration information.

Corkage fee reduced 50 percent Almost all wine lovers have that very special bottle – the one they always mean to open, but never do. This is why Wall Street Journal wine columnists Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher invented Open That Bottle Night (OTBN) as a worldwide celebration of friends, family and memories during which we finally drink the wine that is otherwise simply too special to open.

During OTBN, GPYC members can join in this special tradition of not just drinking wine but relishing in the memories of great vacations, long-lost loved ones and bittersweet moments. If you are attending OBTN as part of a group, consider asking everyone to say a few words about the significance of the wine they brought. This really is what OTBN is all about – sharing.

EVENTS All Things European: 2019 Rendezvous French Wine/Cognac Tasting with Schedule Fine Italian Clothier Thursday, March 28 Fittings with Frank Serraiocco Friday, March 29, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Mark your calendar for an evening of French and Italian fineries: Help us welcome the Midwest ambassador of Louis XIII Maximilien and his new Ambassador Julien as we learn about cognac and enjoy a French wine tasting led by Michael Cregar of Woodberry Wine. All of this will be paired with Master Clothier Frank Serraiocco, who will be displaying his finest fabrics and taking measurements for 100 percent hand-sewn jackets and suits. Frank will also be on hand to meet and fit members, guests and the public throughout the day on Friday, March 29.

Paddle Tennis Reservations Please observe the following guidelines for making court time reservations: • Reservations can be made Wednesday through Sunday by calling the Front Gate at (313) 640-7001 or emailing frontgate@gpyc.org.

• Reservations can be made on Monday and Tuesday by calling Susan Hughes at (313) 640-3188 or emailing shughes@gpyc.org before 5 p.m.

• Reservations can be made no more than four hours in advance.

• Only one court can be reserved at a time.

If the other court is open, it can be made available for use.

• The court may only be reserved for 1 ½ hours at a time. This time cannot be “piggybacked.”

If the court is not being used at the end of the reservations, you may continue to play.

Golf League & Closest to Pin Competition Eastside Tennis & Fitness Club is hosting some golf simulator events – a league and closest to the pin competition. The cost for the league is $40 per month. You can play up to eight times each month on two course, on your own schedule. Each month consists of two world-class courses to choose from. The lowest score between both courses receives $40. Also, a closest to the pin competition includes 10 shots for a $5 entry fee, with continued play for $5 per 10 shots. First place receives $40 cash, and second place includes $20 cash. HARBOR By the time you read this article, we will be in the middle of winter. We hope you are thinking about spring and getting your boat ready for the upcoming season at the GPYC. Harbormaster Alex Turner has all of the Slip Lease Agreements in for first boat slips. For those of you who have a second boat, watch for the upcoming announcement in April regarding second boat slip postings.

We want to make all of you aware that slips are awarded based on seniority points, while trying to strive to have boats utilize 75 percent of the size of the slip.

Accommodations can be allowed on a temporary basis. We do our best to satisfy all of our membership.

Boating Education Classes

will hold this class at the GPYC for six consecutive Mondays at 6:30 p.m. The class covers the fundamentals of safe boating and operation and meets the state requirements for DNR certification.
