Happy New Year to All!

With the holidays behind us, for many, it’s time to create new resolutions and strive to make 2019 one to remember. The staff, committees and club leadership have resolved to improve the value of your membership in making this your Club for all seasons. It’s going to be a great year at the GPYC! We are your go-to place for world-class dining and camaraderie with friends and family. Check the Club calendar often for special member events from pop-up parties to fun athletic events. Coming to the Club as a place for yearround family fun has never been easier with the new Teen Center and the Family Recreation Center. Thanks to the commitment of the general manager and his staff, the Club is open more now than in decades past. Enjoy the casual bar and menu in the Bowling Center on Monday nights for the big game or the adults-only Friday and Saturday night events in the Tower Pub where we are serving up cocktails and small fare. Perhaps you celebrated with your family at our well-attended first annual Christmas Eve dinner, certain to become a Club tradition. Kelley and I would like to thank all who attended and made the 90th Commodore’s Ball a great success. Special thanks to Aaron Wagner, Anna Swartz, Barb Walkowski, Karleen Bacha, Chef Newman and his amazing team, the waitstaff and all the behind-the-scenes staff who helped make this possible. I would also like to thank the all-female hostess team – Kaitlyn, Pasha, Skye, Marika and Anika Vreeken and Madeline Roeske – who did a great job of seating visiting Commodore’s, Past Commodore’s, the Board of Directors and the Bridge. As our staff and committees have been hard at work, here are just a few of the upcoming events you will not want to miss: January 9 - Ladies Fashion Show - featuring clothing from Dawood in the Village. Members will model clothes down the catwalk featuring hip/casual to black tie dresses. January 23 - Paddle Tennis Launch Party - come to play and stay to watch Dimitri and Aaron take on some Pros! January 25-27 - Winter Festival Weekend - long festival for adults and children. There is something for everyone. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Club! Respectfully

Commodore Ilja J. Vreeken

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER

Activity and Communication Lead to Retention

Cheers to a happy and healthy New Year! This year the Club is committed to becoming your 12-month Club. In order to do so, we are offering a full schedule of activities and making investments that assist in achieving that goal. With the recent additions of the Marine Activity Center (MAC), Family Recreation Center (FRC) and Bowling Recreation Center (BRC), the Club has been very successful recruiting new members, specifically in the younger demographic. However, with great success comes great responsibility. Your management team, Board and committees are dedicated to providing value for your membership in order to retain members for generations to come. In January, there are activities for all ages and interests. Ladies! Make plans to attend the Icy Hot Ladies Fashion Show on January 9 with styles from Dawood Boutique. This event will feature a fantastic four-course dinner, a beautifully decorated Main Dining Room and fellow members on the catwalk. Looking for action the entire family can enjoy? Make plans to be at the Club the weekend of January 25-27 for the allnew and improved Winter Festival Weekend! The weekend will begin with a new “Glow Party” for teenagers in the BRC. Thanks to some of our young Membership Activity members, this party is going to be one that your kids won’t want to miss because it was designed for them…by them! The weekend will also feature a variety of activities at the Family Recreation Center (FRC) including an adult vs. kids snowball fight, floor hockey on the pickleball courts, hot chocolate station at the Tennis Center, snowman making contest, paddle tennis tournament, trap shooting tournament and unique food trucks with a hot lunch available for purchase. Characters from the movie “Frozen” will also be there to entertain the children. On Saturday night, the “hottest” party of the cold winter takes place. Winter Blast is back – wait till you see the new additions. This party might be the biggest since its inception. Be there! Get your reservations for all of these events by calling the Front Desk at (313) 884-2500 or email us at switchboard@gpyc.org. I would like to also mention that in the spirit of creating more activities and events for members to enjoy, we have created and filled the position of Special Events Director. Please join me in welcoming our newest addition to the Club, Kathy VandeLaare. Kathy has a contagiously positive personality and will be improving traditional in-house events and adding new activities to the schedule. Her goal is participation, and she will be working with the various committees to maximize it. Get over the holiday hangover and the winter blues and enjoy all of the action at your Club! *GPYC Communication Tools: -Join the private GPYC Facebook group. (Please note you cannot search for this group, as it is private. You must contact me, and I will add you to the ever-growing list of members on there.) -Follow the Club on Instagram (search for @OfficialGPYC) -Create a user name and password on the GPYC website. -Look for an email announcing the creation of the new mobile app. As I write this article, it is in beta testing and will hopefully be ready by the time you read this! Your credentials are the same as the ones you created for the website. Smooth Sailing,

STAFFSPOTLIGHT By Aaron Wagner

Valet Director Neil Turchick

This month’s Staff Spotlight features “the second person” you see when visiting the Club. First comes Security at the gate, and then comes Valet. Our Valet Director Neil Turchick has been with the Club for more than 19 years. He has been in charge of the operation for about six years after working under the previous valet management for 13 years. For those who know him well, he is a constant joker. He always tries to make everyone smile when entering or leaving our Club. I have seen him bend down really low to shake hands with little kids and playfully tease. Then, five minutes later, he is talking about “old times” with some of our elder members. When it comes to being professional, Neil turns it on as well. He can be found during formal events greeting guests at the door in black tie attire and always calls everyone by proper name.

Without a doubt, Neil’s greatest attribute is his dedication and loyalty. Neil is someone who cares deeply about family and friends. He is the guy you can call at any hour of the day or night to help. When it comes to the staff and members of the Club, he considers them an extended part of his family – and it shows. Whether it is an airport run for a red-eye flight or maybe an unplanned safe ride home after a fun party at the Club, you can count on him. Please join me in honoring Neil this month for his services to our members.

MATTERS New Administrator Joins Membership Services

I am pleased to report that we now have a new face in Membership Services. Claire Rundquist has been hired an administrator in Membership Services. She will work Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. She joins Membership Director Susan Hughes and Communications Manager Anna Swartz. Having Claire’s assistance will free up time for Anna and Susan on communication, recruiting and the mentoring of new members. She is a recent graduate from Loyola University Chicago and has studied Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. If you are at the Club during a weekday, stop in to meet her. Just a reminder for members vacationing in warm places over the winter months, Membership Services is happy to arrange for reciprocal dining privileges at private yacht clubs worldwide. It is simply a matter of calling Claire or I, and one of us will make the arrangements for you. You can reach us at shughes@gpyc.org and crundquist@gpyc.org.

HERITAGE COMMITTEE

Why Looking Back is Thinking Ahead A group is formed to preserve and promote Club history. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club abounds in hard-working committees whose task is looking forward. You name it -- Finance, Facilities, Membership, Harbor -- they all strive to impact the Club's future.

Now there's a new committee -- Heritage -- whose mission is to look back. The Heritage Committee was formed to preserve, protect, and learn from, the Club's rich and sometimes rocky past. Above all, the Heritage Committee is dedicated to embracing the Club's 100-plus year history and sharing its memorable highlights with members. "Our club provenance is rich in people and events that helped shape this region in the 20th Century," said Vice Commodore Ilja Vreeken, the committee's first chairperson. "But the tendency is to get so caught up in the present that we ignore the forces that made us what we are. This committee is charged with bringing the past into the present and making our members aware of who and what we were." The new committee's charter is widereaching. One of its first assignments is to dot Club publications with a series of interesting historical tales that will hopefully leave members thinking, "Gee, I didn't know that." The Grosse Pointer magazine, The Mast, The Buzz and the Club web site will eventually carry these retrorevelations. At first the stories will draw heavily from the GPYC Centennial History Book, but new historical information will be revealed as it is uncovered. The committee will also concern itself with the historic "look" of the Club, reviewing all plans as they relate to the decoration, restoration and enhancement of the GPYC clubhouse, harbor and grounds. The group will ensure that all such projects

This artist’s rendering of the new home of the GPYC appeared on the front cover of the “Grosse Pointe Yacht Club: 100 Years: 1914-2014” book. It was drawn two years before construction was completed in 1929. are compatible with the Club's Italian Renaissance architecture and that a "yacht club aesthetic" prevails wherever appropriate. Will this mean a return to a "Roaring Twenties" style of decor? No, it will not. But we can expect the Club to be consistently held to a level of design elegance that was in place when the clubhouse opened nearly 90 years ago. The committee will further strive to improve facilities for the long-term preservation of the Club's archives and historical treasures. A clubhouse "History Walk," that will put many of the Club's vintage artifacts and photographs on prominent display, is already in the planning stage. Last but not least, the Heritage Committee will monitor the Club's conformity to state

9

and federal standards as a National Historic Site. Much work was put into achieving this prestigious status, and the committee will continue to make sure we remain in good standing with the National Register of Historic Places. The original members of the committee include Chairman Joe Schmitt, Elisabeth Meda, Past Commodore James Ramsey, Joe Schaden, Linda Schaden, Past Commodore Sean Schotthoefer, Larry Stephenson and Sue Vogel. Also, Past Commodore Bill Vogel recently joined the Committee, and Commodore Vreeken has been active in the committee as well. Commodore Vreeken summed it up this way: "There is an adage that says, 'Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.' In our case, we want to learn from our heritage, and make our members prouder for it."

HARBOR I am extremely pleased to have been asked by Commodore Vreeken to chair the 2018-2019 Harbor Committee. Your Harbor Committee will be working close with Harbor Master Alex Turner and his team to continue the growth of our Harbor. I am very proud to introduce to you a great group of members willing to give of their time to be on our committee: Dr. Gary Bill, Pete Blake, Luke Ciaramitaro, Doug Dossin, Dr. Steven Grekin, Dr. Linas Mastis, Dave Quint, Fred John Reif, Dr. John Seago, John Secco, along with David Schaden (Board Liaison) and Robert Galeota (Strategic Harbor).

HAPPENINGS

Each member of the harbor committee will be assigned a dock to represent. The responsibility of the Dock Representative will be to report items of concern, which will be addressed by Alex. This will include anything from cleanliness to needed repairs.
