COMMODORE’S CORNER

GPYC Teeming with Activity and Family Fun This Summer

In all my travels, I believe the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is one of the most beautiful places to be during the summer. We have so many wonderful activities and the advantage of our very own Lake St. Clair. A beautiful sunny day by the pool, a cocktail at the Gazebo bar and then a meal outside at the Harborside Grill or the Binnacle Terrace…it doesn’t get much better than that! One of my personal favorite days at the Club is the Fourth of July. It is an entire day of family fun, starting with the pet parade, then pool games, a family barbecue and DJ before our annual fireworks display. The weekend also offers a Saturday night family friendly night by the incredible tribute band, Your Generation In Concert, on July 6 and Sunday’s highly competitive Bocce Ball Tournament on July 7. I hope your family plans to spend this summer holiday at the Club. Later this month, we will be hosting the 2019 United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) Optimist Nationals which will bring us national and international recognition. This premier event begins on Saturday, July 20 and will continue through Sunday, July 28. At its peak, from July 25-28, there will be over 300 boys and girls with their OPTI sailboats in and around the harbor. In addition, there will be parents, siblings, coaches, judges and GPYC volunteer helpers launching, retrieving and conducting races. I encourage you to be a part of this prestigious event – no sailing experience is required to volunteer! To find out more information about volunteer opportunities, go to gpycusoda.org and click on “Volunteers.” During this event, the Club will be fully operational, and every effort will be made to minimize any inconvenience to members and regularly scheduled Club activities. The harbor entrance and fairway to the Hoist Dock will be inaccessible for approximately one hour during morning launch and afternoon retrieval of sailboats (see the detailed schedule on page 9). Your support and understanding as we host this event are greatly appreciated. As a premiere yacht club, it is a great opportunity to showcase GPYC and the pride we share as members. We have two great rendezvous planned for July – the Old Club Dinner Cruise on July 11 and the Catawba Island rendezvous from July 12-14. I hope you are able to join in the adventure and festivities. The 2019 Fleet Review is coming in August, and we encourage all Social and Active members to join the fun and participate in the DECADES Themed Dock Parties. To get a ride on a fellow member’s boat for the Fleet Review parade, please contact Catering Director Barb Walkowski at bwalkowski@gpyc.org. Happy Summer,

Commodore Ilja Vreeken

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Play All Day

It has been a very wet beginning to our summer season. But on the bright side, the green landscape at the Club has never been more vibrant! This is my favorite time of year because the Club transforms into a summer “theme park” for all ages. The Founders Club members have raised an impressive amount of funding to improve our programs as well as the Harbor. I am very proud of how our Club presents itself in those areas and look forward to future plans. Special thanks to Rear Commodore Gary Marowske for his continued efforts with the Founders Club! Our children’s programs are getting stronger each year. We continue to celebrate the success the Marine Activity Center has brought to Sailing with another giant group of junior sailors and several prestigious regattas including the USODA Optimist Nationals in July. Our Swim Team has grown by leaps and bounds with the help of our swim team parents and Head Coach Nick Valice. I am pleased to report that our Swim Team rebuild over the past couple years should be paying off this year with strong swimmers and several new families added to the mix. Tennis received a boost when the Athletics Committee and Board announced the Racquet Sports Program, which allows prospective members use of the courts. We have already seen positive recruiting results there, and our Tennis/Pickleball Program is as strong as it has ever been. Day Camp is back and has been enjoying another successful summer under the guidance of our Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser. Whether you are 5 years old or 85 years young, the GPYC has something exciting in store for you! We look forward to seeing you at the Club and appreciate your continued support. Smooth sailing,

STAFF SPOTLIGHT George Spieles, Director of First Impressions By Aaron Wagner

Recently, the GPYC was named an "Iconic" Club by Distinguished Clubs (BoardRoom Magazine) due to several key attributes. The most important measure of a Club is "Intangible Quality". This represents the things that impact a member emotionally. It's what makes a Club great! We have been looking for ways to add to this feeling of Intangible Quality, and this has led to the addition of a new position, Director of First Impressions. This person will greet everyone who walks through the doors with a friendly smile. George Spieles, who has worked at the GPYC for many years as a housekeeping attendant, seems to know everyone and is the perfect fit for this role. George is dressed to impress and looks forward to seeing you!

SPORTS Swim Team Update Group & Individual The 2019 Sailfish Swim Team season is in Swim Lessons full swing. We began back in May with our Swim Team Kick-Off Party. It was a huge success, as we welcomed many of our new and returning swim families. The fun continued into June with our team outing to Cedar Point, and our Pizza / Poster Party teambuilding event. The Sailfish also fared well in the pool, with successful swim meets against Plum Hollow and Grosse Ile Country Clubs. As we look ahead to July, the action does not stop. We have meets scheduled with Detroit Yacht Club, Edgewood Country Club, Dearborn Country Club and Western Golf Club prior to heading into MICSA Finals at Country Club of Detroit. The swim season wraps up on July 30 at GPYC with the Summer Splash-Down Awards and Pool Party. Speaking of the MICSA Finals, did you know that GPYC will be the host club for the 2021 MICSA Finals? This is a huge event for the Club that brings hundreds of swim families together from all over the metro Detroit area. GPYC’s own Jim Boutrous and Steve Beckett have already begun preparations but will need a team of support volunteers behind them in order to make this event a success. If you want to be a part of this prestigious event, or any aspect of our growing GPYC Sailfish program, please contact GPYCSailfish@comcast.net.
