NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Welcome Back!

I am so pleased to welcome our membership back to the Club finally. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused quite a bit of stress for our members, staff, and community. Now it is time to enjoy the Club and all the amazing amenities. During the pandemic, the Club was able to complete a much-needed HighWater Mitigation Project to ensure the safe operation of our Harbor while also keeping the parking lot and adjacent areas free of flooding. Special thanks to our High-Water Committee for their leadership throughout the project. I would like to thank all our members for continuing to support the Club during these difficult times by ordering Curbside Carryout and patiently waiting as we planned a safe reopening in June. Our membership level is very healthy right now and still climbing while our Harbor is at full capacity!

I also want to take a moment to say thank you to our dedicated staff. Most of our staff were furloughed during the pandemic and while the Club did carry their health insurance and put in place employee support programs, it was not easy for them to be away. They are so excited to be back to work and many expressed that they had missed seeing “their members” every day.

One of the most exciting new things at the Club is our Member Boat Sharing Program. This program began in early June and has gained lots of attention thus far. Whether you are an Active or Social Member, you can use these beautiful, brand new boats. The Club has partnered with Colony Marine to feature a 23-foot Boston Whaler Vantage and a 21-foot Boston Whaler Montauk. COMMODORE’S CORNER GPYC Continues to Provide Amenities, Events Despite Challenges Crisis can bring out the best or worst in people. Some shrink away while others step to the front and find ways to improve difficult situations. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is fortunate to have a leadership team under the direction of General Manager Aaron Wagner that really stepped up in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The extended stay-at-home order, closure of virtually all our normal activities and the ever-changing nature of this crisis presented challenges unlike any we have ever seen. Combined with the high-water mitigation project, the pandemic took us into uncharted territory. Aaron and his team worked with the various vendors to keep the high-water construction project moving forward knowing that any delays would impact membership in the spring. At the same time, they began to creatively react and provide value for our members while supporting the front-line workers during the worst of the COVID crisis. CFO Jim DeMasse worked tirelessly with Aaron and the whole team to create a plan that would help minimize the financial impact to the Club, and Chef Colby worked with his kitchen staff to build the carryout program. Upon reopening the team created protocols based on best practices that help protect the staff and membership. All this looks seamless in hindsight but being in the trenches as this was evolving was not a comfortable place to be. Kudos to Aaron and his whole team for a job well done.

Over the past several months the Board has been working with management to create a long-term repair, replacement and capital expenditure program. The goal is to develop a five-year rolling plan to ensure our Clubhouse and campus are kept in excellent condition. We are working to identify key projects to enhance the member experience and put timing to critical infrastructure upgrades. As a part of this effort we will be undertaking a professional reserve study to understand the useful life of our assets and build replacement timing into the plan. With a clear picture of the future costs to maintain and enhance our Club, we can better address long term financial needs.

The calendar of upcoming events can be found elsewhere in this edition of The MAST but I want to invite you all to join Chris and I for the annual Fleet Review festivities. While slightly modified from the past years due to our “new normal,” it will be a fun-filled couple of days for members of all categories. Another event not to miss is our Harbor Springs Rendezvous. You do not need a boat to join in – all you need to do is contact the Club and make a reservation, then take the scenic drive up to Harbor Springs for the weekend.

Finally, the new Member Boat Sharing Program has been very successful in its rollout year. As another way to maximize the value for your membership dollars, this program is available to all membership categories. Thank you to Director Pete Beauregard for making this possible! Details on how to qualify are available through Wally Cross in the sailing office.

Pool Reservations

Pool reservations are only needed for those who would like to use lounge chairs on the pool deck. If you would like to just use the pool, you are welcome to come at any time during pool hours. Also, additional seating is available on the East Lawn (no reservation required). Members will be able to register for a time slot one week in advance and will only be able to register one time per day, twice per week.

• To make a reservation, go to https://gpyc.org/About-Us/ Pool_Hours_and_Reservations or use your GPYC mobile app. To make a reservation, you will need the following information: names of patrons, desired time slots, and number of people in your group (6 max).

• Members will sign up for one of five time slots. Availability will be at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Hours of operation will conclude at 8:30 p.m. A 30-minute time slot after each reservation period will be used to disinfect all seating areas.

• Each hour and a half time slot will accommodate up to 16 groups.

Members will be able to choose their spot on the pool deck, based on where they are queued in line.

• If a member needs to cancel a reservation, they should do so in a timely fashion (24 hours in advance) as others may be able to fill in once the reservation re-opens. The Club reserves the right to charge a $100 fee for any members who do not show for their reservation (no call, no show).

• Pool reservations will be available only to Members and their extended family at this time.

Curbside Carryout

Curbside Carry-out is offered Wednesdays through Sundays from 4-6 p.m. To view the current Curbside Carry-out Menu, please go to www.gpyc.org. To place an order, please email carryout@gpyc.org. In the email, please include pickup time, phone number and member number. Please note: Family Meal orders need to be placed by Noon for same day pick up (4-6 p.m.), and a la carte orders must be placed by 4 p.m. for same day pick up (4-6 p.m.). Pickup is fast and easy! When you arrive at the Club at your pickup time, there will be a member of our team waiting for you, so you don’t even need to get out of your car.

New! Member Boat Sharing Program

GPYC recently introduced a Member Boat Sharing Program. A Boston Whaler 23foot Vantage and a Boston Whaler 21-foot Montauk, pictured below are available to rent for half days, 8 a.m.-Noon or 1-5 p.m., or full days from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

To rent a boat, you must be a GPYC member and at least 25 years of age. Members must qualify to operate boats by taking an online Michigan boating safety course -- the charge is $29 per registrant. Grog Shop

The Grog Shop will be open every day from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Our fridges are stocked with many Grab 'n Go options, as well as other snacks and beverages for members to enjoy.

You can call ahead to place an order for pick up – (313) 774-0187– and the Grog shop staff will have your order ready to go.

Currently, the Club is limiting the amount of customers in the store to two people.

EVENTS Spring Driving Cruise & Visit to Lingenfelter Car Museum

Sunday, August 9 | 10 a.m.

Time to wax your Vette, Aston or old GMC truck! Join fellow members on a Summer Driving Cruise on Sunday, August 9. Participants are also very fortunate to also be visiting the Lingenfelter Car Museum. It is one of the largest private collections in the U.S, and not usually accessible to the public. Participants will meet at the back of the Club parking lot (near the playground and tennis courts) at 10 a.m. There, the group will review directions and logistics. Everyone will head first to the museum in Brighton and spend one to two hours viewing more than 150 performance and exotic vehicles. Afterwards, participants will head to lunch. We will conclude with a 20-mile cruise (recommended by the Lingenfelters) through the countryside before heading back to the Club. Cost is $20 per passenger. We are happy to announce a new boat sharing program at the GPYC! We now have two Boston Whalers that are available for members to rent so that they can enjoy a great day on Lake St. Clair! Entrance Buoys

The entrance buoys have been installed for the season outside of the entrance to the Harbor. Alex has had a few inquiries regarding the proper procedure when entering and leaving the Harbor. Please keep in mind the following: • When leaving or entering harbor please stay between the Red and Green buoys.

• The area between the outer buoys and the harbor entrance is a no wake zone.

• Cutting between the buoys is not permitted by any type of vessel.

MEMBERSHIP Thumbs Up, GPYC! Looking back over the last few months at the immense amount of challenges since the Covid pandemic hit Michigan, it is truly amazing how the GPYC has not just survived but thrived through the crisis.

GPYC members should be proud for continuing to support their Home Away from Home through such a tough time.

I perform an exit survey for all members who leave the Club. Although there have been 65 members who have left the club since the beginning of the fiscal year, only 11 members stated that their leave was

Covid-related and hope to be back soon.

Some other interesting findings include the increase in Active and Legacy memberships. Typically every year about five members transfer from the Social member classification to the Active. This year 13 Socials transferred to Active and brought a boat into the Harbor. The number of members in our Legacy classification is higher than it’s ever been. On average the Legacy member count is 25. Currently, it is at 40.

We fell behind in recruitment activity over

the past couple months, when the club typically recruits approximately 35- 40 new members over the months of April and May. I am confident that we can catch up in the upcoming summer months.

The members of the GPYC have demonstrated amazing patience, dedication and support through this challenging time.

The management and staff truly appreciate your loyalty, and we are thrilled to have you back at the Club after a long hiatus.

Can I view the details of charges/chits through the GPYC App and Website?

Yes, you can click on the charge/chit and see the details of the charge.

Can I pay my outstanding balance through the GPYC App and Website?

Yes! There is a “Pay Now” button that you click on and enter your banking information. This requires a separate username and password, but you only have to set it up once.

Can I pay with a credit card through the GPYC App and Website?

Yes! You set this up the same way you would with your banking information. There is a 3.5% convenience fee for paying by credit card.

Am I on auto pay when I pay through the GPYC App and Website with my bank or credit card?

No. If you choose to pay through the app then you must initiate a payment each month.

Members can utilize the GPYC Mobile App to access their statement, view details of charges/chits and pay their bill.

How do I set up auto pay?

Contact CFO Jim DeMasse, and he can send you out the “ACH Authorization Form” to have you set up on the auto pay plan. Junior tennis is in full swing, please see the schedule below. Junior tennis is drop-in style and designed for maximum flexibility.

Pee Wee Program

Format: The building blocks of tennis taught through fun and engaging games.

Monday-Thursday | 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Cost: $16 drop-in Ages: 4-7

Challenger & Tour Level

Format: Designed for intermediate to advanced children, emphasizing improved footwork, strokes, strategy, and match play.

(Ages 5-6) This new week-long session is a perfect sailing introduction for those who love the water but aren’t old enough yet for our Learn to Sail program. Our instructors

will use the sailing simulator and the club’s J/22s to get our smallest sailors comfortable on the water. This session will cover basic sailing concepts and water safety.

Session I: July 13-17 Session II: August 3-7 Session III: August 10-14 (half day only)

Learn to Sail – Level 1

(Ages 7-11) Session III: July 20-31 An introduction to the sport of sailing, this course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, boat handling, sailing fundamentals and water safety with a fun, game-inspired curriculum. Instruction is done in clubowned Optimists and J/22s. Sailors are paired with one another and learn the basics of steering, trimming the sail, and balancing the boat in an exciting, handson way. This class can be taken once or repeated until a sailor is ready to be in a boat on their own.

Learn to Sail – Level 2

(Ages 7-11) Session III: July 20-31 For sailors who have mastered Level I, Level II sailors will build on what they’ve learned and become more independent in the boats. Instructors and sailors utilize the club’s Optis, J/22s, and the sailing simulator to help sailors expand their understanding of sailing fundamentals with a focus on upwind and downwind sailing, boat handling and seamanship. This class can be taken once or repeated until a sailor is ready to move on.

Adventure Sailing

(Ages 12-18) Session III: July 20-31 Adventure sailing is for the beginner to advanced teenaged sailor who wants to explore the water and improve their ailing in a fun and casual way. During this two-week session, sailors will get to sail the club’s J/22s, O’pen Bics, 420s and windsurfers.

This class focuses on water safety and seamanship while allowing sailors to experience the joys of being on the water.

GPYC Sailing League

Tuesdays | 6-7 p.m.

This summer, GPYC will host Tuesday evening races for all members who own sailboats, junior sailing parents and Social members. We will have two courses – one for the junior sailing boats and a slightly longer course for the member-owned boats. Each race will conclude with a social gathering at the Gazebo Bar area.

Please join us on June 16 for the very first Tuesday Night Sailing League at the GPYC. Anyone planning to sail should contact Sailing Director Wally Cross by 5 p.m. the day of the race: wcross@gpyc.org.

Adult Sailing Course

Six-week sessions are available on Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m. Sailors are taught aboard the Club's newly restored J-22s, and instructors are U.S. Sailing Certified. Whether you are new to sailing or want to improve your sailing, navigation or racing techniques, we can tailor a program to your needs.

James Cooper is the Adult Learn to Sail Program director and has designed the courses for those 18 years and older with all different sailing abilities in mind.

Skills taught in Learn to Sail include rigging, boat handling, steering with a tiller, main and jib sail trim, entering and leaving the harbor, points of sail, wind, knot tying and sailing safety.

Participants will sail with a professional coach on each boat. All classes will be videoed for viewing on our new classroom in the Marine Activity Center.

SPORTS Fitness Update: Getting After It

Throughout my years as a trainer and fitness guru, many people have asked me what it takes to lose weight, get in shape, and start seeing results. My answer is simple – consistency + discipline = results.

I can teach my clients how to do a proper squat and push up, but consistency and discipline comes from within; you have to want it. There is no magic formula that will make you have washboard abs overnight.

Former Navy Seal and best-selling author Jocko Willink said it best, “don’t expect to be motivated every day to get out there and make things happen. You won’t be.

Don’t count on motivation. Count on discipline.”

Mayo Clinic recommends 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. Moderate exercise consists of walking, light jog, or lifting light weights. Vigorous exercise examples include anaerobic activities such as running, playing intense sports, or jumping.

Golf Reciprocity

The hardest part of any workout is getting started. People will make all sorts of excuses as to why they can’t workout, especially “I am too busy.” Next time you find yourself saying you’re “too busy,” try saying, “it’s not a priority,” and see if that changes your attitude.
