A wise man once said, “the single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it took place.” Every member is unique, and therefore, prefers to digest communication in different ways. Most clubs rely on emails as their method of communication. After extensive research, we have found that the best way to communicate to everyone is by using many different modes.

Our emails are only opened about 30 percent of the time. Our print media is estimated to be read by 20 percent of our members. We needed to do more! Thanks to our rejuvenated Communications Committee led by Carol Klenow and our Communications Manager Anna Swartz, we have reformed our Grosse Pointer magazine, as well as The Mast newsletter (the piece you are reading today). We have also become more disciplined with our materials posted to The Weekly Buzz, which in turn is creating better readership. In addition, the website has been updated to be more user friendly. On social media, we have created and continually updated an Instagram page, as well as a private Facebook group with over 400 members (and growing fast!). The mobile app has been launched and features multiple ways to gather information, as well as ways to give feedback. We also plan to use the app push notifications for club wide communication such as emergency alerts. The app will continue to be updated with more features in the coming months. We are working on a Member Text system that will allow the Club to shoot information out via text messaging in order to send targeted messaging like Trap Shooting, Tennis and Bowling that members can choose to opt in or out. The Club is currently enjoying one of the busiest times in recent history as far as member engagement, and we are committed to continuing the efforts towards optimum communication. In the spirit of communicating, let me officially welcome all those boaters back to our Harbor! Summer is back! Stay in the loop on all the fun programming, events and activities. Smooth sailing,

COMMODORE’S CORNER
Staff, Members Work Tirelessly to Improve Club, Add Amenities
Happy June to All, I would like to use this space to reflect on the previous month, as I have spent considerable time at the Club, especially in and around our harbor and grounds. With the combined efforts of club staff and member volunteers, we now have a renovated Grog Shop, gas shed, Hickory, Gas and Moby docks. The inner south sea wall received a fresh coat of paint and many new PVC piling covers have been installed. In addition, harbor entrance buoys have been added, and there has been great progress toward completing the fitness area. All the while, the Harbor and maintenance staff have been working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the high-water levels which pose a serious challenge this season. These are the obvious items. Not so obvious are the new accounting office and employee break room, as well as the establishment of a Club wide staff 6S activity. 6S is a lean process improvement tool that stands for Sort, Set in Order (i.e., Straighten or Stabilize), Shine (i.e., Scrub or Sweep), Standardize, Sustain and Safety. This approach, when fully implemented, will yield improvements for all aspects of Club operations. I am only scratching the surface as pool preparation and the grounds upkeep have been underway, and the Food & Beverage departments were busier than ever in May with one of the best attended Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner in many years. My gratitude goes out to all the staff members involved. I am also grateful for all the volunteers, donors and members with kind words and appreciation for the progress. We have a great Club but an even greater community of members. Special thanks to our harbor volunteers including Steven Vreeken, Kelley Vreeken, Bill Dillon, Tom Curcuri, Paul Kelly, Gary Gonzalez, Bob Weiland, Gary Marowske, Dan Connell, Brad Benigni, Sean Schotthoefer, Michael Meda and Reis Dempsey. They have gone above and beyond from donating needed materials, to donating their time and calloused hands. It speaks volumes about the Club’s esprit de corps that when push comes to shove our member community steps up. The above progress reflects the ongoing commitment of the Board and General Manager to fulfill the Club mission to “Continue to be a premier private Yacht Club, among the finest in North America, also providing high-quality family and social programs to its members.” I hope to see you all out and about enjoying the Club as we enter the warmer months.
Commodore Ilja J. Vreeken

MATTERS
GPYC’s Future Continues to be Bright! As Commodore Vreeken and General Manager Aaron Wagner mentioned in their articles this month, there have been significant improvements in club communications, the harbor and clubhouse grounds. Additionally, all the added club amenities, including the addition of a fitness center, has positioned the Club to have a great year. Year to date, recruitment is higher than usual, and there are fewer members leaving the club. Historically, we experience a drop in the member count until we approach the month of June. This year, we came into the month of June with an increased member count by 11. We are in the process of adding recruitment information on the GPYC phone app to assist in our recruitment efforts. Members will have the ability
Did You Know?
to act as GPYC Ambassadors and have recruitment information at their fingertips. You will be able to reference the top reasons why family, friends and colleagues should join the GPYC. Initiation fees and monthly dues will also be included. We will be sure to let you know when the functionality is ready to access.
As I always say, there is no better time to showcase the club than this time of year. Please be sure to keep the referrals coming! I am happy to offer tours any time and provide a complimentary lunch or dinner for two to prospective members.

GPYC to Host 2019 Optimist Nationals, July 20-28 A reminder to all boaters, especially those in the west harbor – the 2019 United States Optimist Dinghy Association (USODA) Optimist Nationals begin Saturday, July 20 and continue through Sunday, July 28. Launching and racing begins on Sunday, July 21 with approximately 125 boats for the Team Racing. At its peak, July 25-28, more than 300 boys and girls will be in and out of the harbor with their Opti sailboats. bisecting the main parking lot at the paddle tennis house, including all parking around the tennis courts and hoist dock area, by 8 a.m. on Friday, July 19.
there will be significant impact to the boaters in the harbor and disruption to members in general. We ask for everyone’s support and understanding as we host this great event.
Please know that even with all these activities, the Club will remain open and operational, with access to all members. Every effort will be made to minimize impact to members and any regularly scheduled GPYC programs and activities. Parking on the weekends will be in short supply, but we have offsite parking at Grosse Pointe North High School, with regular shuttle buses running from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. each day. With that said,
