January has come and gone, and we are now beginning to see the days get longer and hopefully warmer. Early in the month we had the Taco Extravaganza complete with Mariachis and Flamenco Dancers. A few of our members bravely accepted an invitation to join the pros out on the dance floor. The Commodore did not. Nicely done! Chef Colby and his team put together a wonderful menu of Mexican specialties for this sold-out event and coupled each course with a shot of high-end tequila.

Following that came the annual Winter Blast. With over 240 attendees, a flip cup tournament, beer pong and excellent cuisine from Chef and his staff made for a smooth wind down from the holidays.

Winter maintenance began February 17 and continues through March 26. The Bowling Recreation Center, Marine Activity Center and Fitness Center will remain open during maintenance. However, the kitchen is undergoing a long overdue major renovation, so Aaron will be working out other options for food. The complete hot line will be replaced with a modified layout and the floor will be redone to reduce maintenance cost in the future. Once completed, the kitchen will provide Chef Colby and his staff with a much more efficient operations center that will allow better service to the membership.

Coming up on April 3, we have the Back to the Club party. This year, come and dance the night away with Your Generation in Concert. See page 6 for more information on that. It is shaping up to be another fantastic event that you will not want to miss. While you are thinking of spring be sure to sign up for our Spring Launch Party - Keels and Wheels, formerly Summer Breeze, where you will get a chance to actually drive some amazing classic cars from the Gilmore Auto Museum or win a Great Lakes Cruise on Victory Cruise Lines.

Finally, we continue to execute our plans for high water mitigation. To ensure the projected high water does not breech the seawall, we are closing the various openings and will be adding risers as necessary to numerous docks, finger piers and some walkways. This, coupled with extensive rerouting of electrical services and setting up for back-up power generation, will cause some areas around the campus to be inaccessible in the short term.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to protect the Clubhouse and Harbor from potential damage.

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Readying for a Successful GPYC Spring & Summer Spring is on the horizon, and we have been extremely lucky with our mild winter weather this year. Last winter, we were fighting ice chunks the size of cars – climbing over the sea wall and threatening both the Marine Activity Center and the power pedestals on the docks! Due to the icy conditions, we also experienced significant damage such as popping pilings and docks out of place. In order to avoid these issues this year, we purchased 200 ice eaters (water fans) which kept the Harbor from freezing and eliminated potential for damage. This investment is predicted to save the Club up to 30 percent on repairs and maintenance annually in the Spring. Also, as most of you are aware, the water levels are going to break last year’s record highs. The Club is amid major projects to protect our Clubhouse from flooding and ensure the Harbor is fully operational. With the electrical alterations and dock risers, we will be in great shape.

I am also pleased to announce that during our current renovation period (February 17-March 26), the Club is completing a large-scale makeover in the kitchen. This project includes all-new equipment on the a la carte service line as well as a brand-new floor. The old cabinetry and shelving units are being replaced as well. These changes may be invisible to members, but the impact will be very visible. As a top-rated yacht club, our kitchen layout and design should reflect the same high standards, and now it certainly will. If you are interested, Chef Colby and I would be happy to give you a tour of the changes in the kitchen. We love giving members and their guests behind-the-scenes experiences.

With all these projects almost behind us, let us focus on a great spring season ahead! Last year we experienced record high participation levels in all our Summer Children’s Programs, and this year will be no different. Please be sure to sign up as soon as possible in order to guarantee your spot. Continuity is important with these programs, and I am pleased to announce that all our program directors will be back. Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser is in her third year and has so many new events and activities planned for the kids. Our Racquet Sports Program continues to grow with the addition of Pickleball and our new state-of-the-art clay courts. Make sure to contact Tennis Director Dmitri Diakonov to register for group lessons, leagues, and junior tennis. Junior Sailing is going to be sold out quickly as well, so be sure to contact Junior Sailing Director Emily Simon with your registration and any questions. Last but certainly not least, the Swim Team continues to shine with their amazing undefeated season last year. This year, the team is looking to make moves in the upper division of MICSA again. Coach Nick Valice also has his sights on 2021, when we host the MICSA Finals here at the Club. Happy spring to all. I can’t wait to see you back at the Club!

NEWS Clubhouse Renovations and Reciprocity

The Club is currently closed for renovations now through Thursday, March 26. The Club will reopen for dinner service on Friday, March 27. Registration is Open for GPYC Day Camp

GPYC is welcoming back Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser for her third summer in this position. She comes to this role well-equipped to ensure your children will be not only in a safe, caring environment – they will have an absolute blast, too. A Grosse Pointe Woods native, Kaiser is currently a second-grade teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea. GPYC will offer Day Camp on the following weeks: June 22-26, June 29-July 3, July 6-10, July 13-17, July 20-24, July 27-31, August 3-7 and August 10-14. The cost is as follows: members* - half day $200, full day $300 and sponsored guests* – half day $250 and full day $350. * There is a one-time registration and t-shirt fee of $50. The MAST is Now Bi-Monthly, The Grosse Pointer is Quarterly

The Club's MAST newsletter has changed from monthly to bi-monthly. Also, the frequency of The Grosse Pointer magazine will change from bi-annual to quarterly.

Receiving The MAST every other month will continue to allow members to be well informed about Club news and events, and

it will allow Club staff Club staff to further improve on new communication vehicles such as the redesigned Web site, mobile app and new text messaging program.

Changing The Grosse Pointer back to quarterly will allow for members to enjoy more timely content in each issue.

Text Messages from GPYC

To enhance our communication with membership, we recently introduced an optional text messaging program.

Participants receive key information about Club events and important news items, as well as last-minute updates such as pool/ outdoor facilities closure due to inclement weather. This program is optional, and you may opt out at any time. If the Club does not have your cell phone number and you wish to receive texts from the Club, please email your phone number to Communications Manager Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org to have it added to our database.

Complimentary Birthday Meals

As a token of appreciation for your membership at the Club, members, spouses and children (ages 3-13) are offered one complimentary dinner in the Club's Binnacle or Spinnaker dining rooms. You can celebrate this offer any evening during the month of your birthday.

The cost of the lowest priced entrée will be deducted from your bill.

Good news: We are simplifying this process by no longer mailing out birthday letters. To receive your complimentary dinner, simply let the Front Desk know that you will be celebrating your birthday dinner when you make your reservation.

Daniel Ament: Breathe a Better Life Founder, Fight4Wellness Wednesday, April 29 | 7 p.m.

As a junior at Grosse Pointe North High School, Daniel excelled in academics and athletics.

Daniel was well-liked and had many friends through his active life of competitive sailing, swimming and running. When he wasn’t practicing for regattas or meets, you could find him with friends or family on or somewhere near the water. He also had a passion for urban exploration and adventures with his friends.

Daniel's goal was to attend the U.S. Naval Academy located in Annapolis, Maryland, and then pursue a career in the military as a Navy Seal.

All that changed on September 5, 2019, when Daniel became very ill as a result of a severe illness due to vaping. He was 16 years old. After spending 29 days on life support, Daniel faced imminent death prior to receiving the gift of life with the first double lung transplant in the world from a vaping related illness on October 15, 2019. While Daniel is doing well, full recovery from a lung transplant can take months.

Today, Daniel is committed to sharing his story publicly and launching a non-profit organization that will encourage young people to live a healthier and happier lifestyle and improve overall mental wellness with training for counselors, coaches and parents to provide alternatives for coping with the pressures of being a teenager void of substances.

HARBOR Spring is approaching, and Harbor Master Alex Turner and his staff have been working diligently to prepare the GPYC Harbor for the upcoming boating season. In addition to their routine yearly maintenance, Alex and his staff have begun working on preparations for what is projected to be record high lake levels.

The potential issues created by the lake level have led the Board of Directors to create a High-Water Committee. They are focusing on measures to ensure that the Clubhouse remains dry and that our docks and seawalls are raised above the lake levels projected for 2020 by the Army Core of Engineers. Along with new dock risers, multiple docks will have new cleats installed. If you are considering

making any changes to your well in order to help with boarding your vessel, please contact the Harbor Master prior to any construction to confirm that your plans meet the harbor standards as established in the Member Guidelines.

With all the projects that will be taking place in the Harbor this spring, it is critical that you alert Alex and his staff prior to your planned arrival for the season.

Three-Year Club Offers Unique Perks for Newer Members

Are you familiar with the “Three-Year-Club" at the GPYC? This “Club within the Club” is the brainchild of Membership Committee Chair Marita Grobbel, and it has played an integral part in acclimating new members to the GPYC. All members who have joined over the past three years are automatically part of this exclusive group – allowing them to receive invites to events that are not only fun but allow a special time to mingle with fellow members and GPYC staff. The hope is that new members of the Club will make longstanding relationships and feel like the GPYC is their home away from home.

MATTERS

Last year, Three-Year Club members enjoyed a cooking class with Executive Chef Colby, a “behind the scenes” clubhouse tour, a Detroit River Cruise and a beer tasting. The events have been well attended and the response has been very positive. Since the cooking class was such a success last year, we repeated a cooking class in January.

The plan is to continue the gatherings on a quarterly basis through 2020. Three-Year Club members will be receiving invitations to future Three-Year Club events. They are scheduled for the following Thursdays: April 30, August 20 and October 29.

Profile Pictures in the GPYC Online Roster

Did you know that the profile pictures in the online roster are synced with the photos in the GPYC database? Many of the profile pictures are the professional headshots that were taken at the Candidate Reception when you first joined the GPYC. If anyone would like to update their photo, or does not have a photo on file, you can upload a photo via the Web site roster by logging in, then selecting the “Member” tab and selecting “Roster.” Once you find your name in the roster, go to the pencil/ editing icon and select “Change Photo.”

Please note: if you’d like to change your photo, we request that they are headshot photos. This is because the GPYC staff utilizes the database to recognize and greet members, and it’s important to have a close-up picture of each member. GPYC’s Catering & Special Events Team Barbara Walkowski, Karleen Bacha and Alondra Kennedy

Barbara Walkowski, formerly the Catering Director, has moved to the position of Special Events Director. Karleen Bacha, who joined the team in 2018 as a catering coordinator, is now a Catering Director.

Alondra Kennedy recently joined the GPYC in January 2020 and works alongside Karleen as a Catering Director.

Why did you want to work at GPYC? Barb – For me, taking the job offered at the GPYC was like coming to work for family.

My husband had been a 10-year employee when I started, and both of my daughters worked here part time. I knew how great the work environment was at the Club. The GPYC is, and will always be, a part of my family’s history.

Karleen – Growing up I would drive down Lakeshore Road and admire the beautiful club overlooking the lake. When the opportunity arose to work at the club, I could not turn it down.

Alondra - There were two aspects that drew me to the GPYC. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and that is so important to me because I love having coworkers that grow to be family. Also, the architecture of the building is so beautiful, and, with this view, why wouldn’t you want to work here?

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Barb – I honestly love getting to know our members and their families. Helping them build memories is a very important role here at the club, and of course I love exceeding all expectations too!

Karleen – The most rewarding part of my job is hearing the wonderful comments, from both the member and even the guests attending that event, about the food, staff and our beautiful Club.

Alondra - The most rewarding part of my job is building relationships with the clients and having them come back for other events. Nothing makes me happier than to have a shower for a previous bride or another birthday party for a family.

Who in your life inspired you to be the great person you are?

Barb – My grandmother instilled in me the value of hard work. To always be proud of your accomplishments, big or small, and to always choose to be kind, to yourself and others!

Karleen – My parents both inspired me to be a driven, hard worker. They have taught me to follow my dreams and always have a positive attitude with a kind heart.

Alondra - My son really inspires me to be the person that I am today. He makes me want to be the best I can be and pushes me to be the best role model for him.

Every day he continues to make me learn more about myself and being a better person.

Special Events and are looking forward to a great year ahead!

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not at work?

Barb – Now that I’m a grandma, it’s important to me to build some new traditions and make some memories … to just enjoy the day!

Karleen – I enjoy spending my time with my two nephews, my family, and my friends.

Alondra – I love to spend time with my son building Legos or playing Pokémon.

What makes the Events Team so special and why do you believe we will have success with events?

Alondra, Karleen and Barb: We all have a passion for this business and love getting to know the families. In the short time our team has been working together, we have united Catering and

We are in the middle of the winter season, and the Bowling Recreation Center is rocking.

High scores and over averages for the past couple months are as follows: Monday Men’s: David Schaden bowled a career high 275 game and was 15 pins over average.

Wednesday Night: Gene DiSante (97 years young) was 169 pins over her average. Joan Retford was 142 over average and Kevin Granger had a high game of 257.

Thursday Morning Ladies: Barbara Alcorn had a high game of 194. Julie Storen was 95 pins over average.

Thursday Night: Amy Schaden went 157 pins over average along with Connie Buffa with 112 over average. John Seago had the men’s high game of 279. Ellen Starks was high for the gals with a 199 game.

In January, the GPYC bowlers traveled to the Country Club of Detroit to take on the CCD Bowlers. I am happy to report that we retained the trophy. The ladies led of the day by defeating the CCD ladies by 192 pins. Leading the ladies was Vali Izzi with a handicap score of 698. She teamed up with Gene DiSante to win the doubles, and her team of Gene DiSante, Vali Izzi, Marilyn Stephenson and Ellen Starks were the overall team champs.

The men were led by Tom Stephenson with a handicap score of 724.

In February, the GPYC men took on the bowlers from the Detroit Golf Club. Once again, our bowlers took advantage of the home lanes with a 742-pin victory. Leading our squad was once again Tom Stephenson with a score of 798. Stephenson along with Matt Schaden won the doubles. The team of Roy Maksym, Derek Starks, Steve McQueen, Mark Peyser and Tom Stephenson was the overall winner.

On January 17, the GPYC sent a team to the Detroit Athletic Club invitational. This is a very prestigious event in the Detroit area, as the DAC invites the top private clubs in the Metro area. I am proud to report the team of Anthony Ventimiglia, David Schaden, Tom Stephenson and John Seago won the tournament. They beat the other seven clubs by 135 pins. This is the second time the GPYC has won this event.

During Club renovations, we will have Friday Open Bowling on Friday, March 13 from 5 to 10 p.m. For those who would like food service, catered foods will be available. The

Swimming at GPYC Sailfish Swim Team Practice Begins May 20

The GPYC Sailfish Swim Team is a competitive swim program offered to members ages 4-17 (age as of June 1). Our swimmers are grouped by ability and practice in a fun learning environment. The GPYC is one of the original MICSA participants in the 79-year tradition of the Michigan Interclub Swimming Association (MICSA), a group of 14 clubs located throughout Metro Detroit.

The Swim Team programs offered at the GPYC are as follows: Future Sailfish (ages 4 and up), Ages 8 and Under, Ages 9 to 12 and Ages 13 and over. The cost is $275 for Future Sailfish and $350 for all other programs.

Synchronized Swim Team

Group Lessons

Session 1: June 16-25 Session 2: July 7-16 Level 1 meets from 9-9:30 a.m. for both sessions, and Level 2 meets from 10-10:30 a.m. for both sessions. Levels 1 and 2 are offered for beginner swimmers ages 3+ and 4+ respectively. Classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The cost is $125 per swimmer per session. Private Lessons

Half-hour lessons are offered for $35 for members and $40 for guests. They can be offered, upon availability, to those who are in Kids Klub as well. Water Aerobics

Two five-week sessions: June 15- July 24 and July 27-August 24 Classes will be held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Junior Sailing

The 2020 Junior Sailing programs include Kinder-sailing (age 5-6), Adventure Sailing (age 12-18), Learn to Sail (age 7-11) and GPYC Racing Team (age 8+). Each program includes three sessions. The first week-long session for Kinder-sailing begins July 13, and every other program has longer sessions that begin on June 15. Also, GPYC will host the 420 North American Championships in 2020. We encourage all local 420 sailors to participate in the event. GPYNEF will sponsor any DRYA sailors who would like to compete. GPYC Sailing League

Tuesdays beginning in June

This summer, GPYC will host Tuesday evening races for all members who own sailboats and any social members who want to learn to sail and race. Social members can take adult sailing classes on the Club’s J 22s. Once the course is completed, they are welcome to utilize the J22s for the Tuesday races. (To sign up for adult sailing lessons, contact Sailing Director Wally Cross at wcross@gpyc.org).

At least four Social members will be racing together on one boat.

One course, which will accommodate all boat sizes, will be directly in front of the Club. We welcome the smaller Junior Sailing boats to the much larger cruiser racer boats. The Club will use a modifided PHRF handicap system to score the final results. Social members will be scored separately from member-owned boats.

Please join us on June 9th for the very first Tuesday Night Sailing League at the GPYC. Classes will run from June through September (weather dependent).

Trap Shooting

Saturdays and Sundays | 11 a.m-4 p.m.

Trap shooting season continues during the Club’s annual renovations and concludes at the end of March. The clays, 12-gauge shells, are included in the price per round.

Each round is five stations with five shots, a total of 25 shots, for $20. DAC's Rod & Gun Club has been invited to participate in GPYC's Trap Shooting. Reservations are not required.

The race will never last longer than one hour. Each race will conclude with a social gathering and awards presentation.
