The Board sent out a Club-wide survey in 2017 which asked what members valued and what projects they would like to see accomplished. The results of this survey formed much of the Strategic Plan. Answers included renovating the Bowling Alley, creating a facility to set us apart from other clubs in relation to water sports and recreation, areas dedicated to young families and kids’ entertainment, a fitness center, and a rejuvenated Clubhouse and grounds. The Club responded by building the Marine Activity Center, which houses the Junior and Adult Sailing Programs as well as wave runner pods, kayak and paddle board storage. It also serves as the perfect venue for everything from winter trap shooting to various summer cocktail parties. The Club renovated the Bowling Recreation Center (BRC), thanks to a motivated core group of bowlers. The BRC is now open year-round with continue fun in the summer months – including a brand-new Summer Thursday Night League and Open Bowling on Fridays and Saturdays. In addition, the new Family Recreation Center has created a place for families to relax while their children enjoy the playscape, basketball court, splash pad or other activities. The Clubhouse has received much-needed attention thanks to Commodore Vreeken’s newly appointed Heritage Committee, which protects the integrity of our aesthetic design and tradition. That committee’s current project is to transform the Trophy Hall into a Heritage Walk featuring our Club’s history. Lastly, the Club is on the heels of opening its first-ever Fitness Wellness Center, complete with a motivated staff and a well-thought-out design that will be open 24 hours, 7 days a week. We hope you will try all these new amenities and let us know what you think. We always enjoy getting feedback from members on how to improve services or areas of the Club. Smooth sailing,
Aaron Wagner

COMMODORE’S CORNER
A Host of Club Improvements Continue in Preparation for Peak Season
Operational activity at the Club has been moving at a rapid pace to prepare for our peak seasons with ongoing clubhouse maintenance, progress on the Fitness/Wellness Center, Grog Shop refurbishment, harbor maintenance and repairs, and a host of service improvements. In addition, the Club management team is selectively hiring and diligently training summer staff to ensure they are ready to provide service that exceeds the quality expectations held by our membership. As your Club for All Seasons, we can confirm that you have embraced the message! We are showing record numbers of members enjoying the food and beverage services during the winter season. This is also a testament to Chef Colby and his team for having upped the quality, variety and consistency of food service. Members are eagerly awaiting the summer fare he will introduce in the coming months. Our newly renovated Bowling Recreation Center (BRC) has enjoyed record attendance and has quickly become the go-to place as our members’ casual bar experience. Participation in bowling is on the rise and our PBA Bowling Pro Gordy Woods has done a phenomenal job managing the sold-out leagues and events. Trap shooting has also quickly become a favorite Club sport and the number of participants keeps growing. If you have not tried this sport, you may want to consider it for next year. Our annual harbor opening in May is always a sure sign that summer will arrive soon. Unfortunately, due to the extreme weather we experienced this winter, the harbor did not come out unscathed. Harbor Master Alex Turner and his team have been out there every day working assiduously to make needed repairs with minimal interruption of any of our harbor services. As the Club’s busy months approach, please reacquaint yourself and family members with the GPYC Rules and Bylaws related to swimming, guests, dress code, harbor conduct and parking (15-minute parking area is just that, 15 minutes). GPYC Rules and Bylaws can be found in your Member Guide as well as on the Club Website. If you have a boat in the harbor, remember that any contractors working on your vessels need to check in with security and provide proof of insurance. Lastly, please remember that the Clubhouse and grounds are a smoke-free environment. We have some amazing events coming that are must-attend opportunities for all: Downtown Luxury Bus Bar Crawl, Saturday, May 11 Mother’s Day Brunch and Dinner, Sunday, May 12 Summer Breeze Party, Friday, May 17 Great Lakes Boating Festival, May 17-19 Youth Boater Safety Course, Saturday, May 18 Memorial Day Weekend Festivities, May 25-27 Wishing you a Happy Spring!

2019 Summer Day Camp
GPYC’s Day Camp will be offered for eight weeks this summer, from June 17 through August 9, for children ages 4-12. Day Camp Director Madeleine Kaiser, who did an excellent job reviving and growing the Club’s program last year, is returning with plans for a busy and exciting summer. Madeleine is a teacher at Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods. For more information about Day Camp, go to gpyc.org/Activities/Day-Camp.
Register Online for GPYC Summer Programs
Registering your child or grandchild for multiple summer programs at the GPYC is now easier than ever before. The Club is no longer using paper registration forms. Junior Sailing, Swim Team and Day Camp will all be using the same online registration software called TeamSnap. Sailing used TeamSnap last year, with great success. The software allows the coaches to communicate effectively with parents, handle invoicing efficiently and keep important information such as allergies or other health information right at their fingertips. Parents can sign up for Junior Tennis and Swim Lessons via email. All of the information you need, as well as registration links, is available at www.gpyc.org/fun.

MEMBERSHIP Ask Me About a GPYC Membership! The 2019 Membership Committee and Board of Directors are fully engaged in mentoring new members and adding members to the GPYC roster.
This year we implemented quarterly new member gatherings to acclimate new members who have joined over the past three years. So far there has been a cooking demonstration by Chef Colby and a “Behind the Scenesâ€? tour of the clubhouse, where members had the opportunity to meet department heads from all areas of the operation. We have had great turnouts and lots of compliments. The next new member gathering is scheduled for Thursday, July 18. The Committee and Board have volunteered to act as ambassadors this year for the 2019 Great Lakes Boating Festival. They will be wearing buttons throughout the weekend that read: Ask Me About a GPYC Membership! We are expecting a betterthan-ever turnout and hope the buttons start a “buzzâ€? throughout the weekend. For those members who attend the event and want to wear a button to show GPYC pride, I will have a supply of the buttons at the Front Desk. The Committee has asked for clarification on the current rewards for members who refer a candidate for membership. Here are the provisions for the rewards program: • Members who refer a candidate for membership will receive a $500 food and beverage credit. • All members of any member classification can be rewarded for referring a candidate. • The member must initiate the referral by calling or emailing me. They cannot simply act as the primary sponsor. • The referral must be a candidate for an Active (boating) or Social membership. Legacy and Non Resident candidate referrals do not apply.

GPYC to Host 2019 Optimist Nationals
July 20 - 28 A reminder to all boaters, especially those in the west harbor – the 2019 Optimist Nationals begin Saturday, July 20 and continue through Sunday, July 28. Launching and racing begins on Sunday, July 21 with approximately 125 boats for the Team Racing. At its peak, July 25-28, more than 300 boys and girls will be in and out of the harbor with their Opti sailboats. In addition, there will be parents, siblings, coaches, judges and volunteer helpers launching, retrieving and conducting races. The launching/retrieving activities will take place in the South Harbor across the Hoist Wells and at the Marine Activity Center.
