To keep everyone safe at the Club, our staff continues to provide sanitizer stations throughout the Clubhouse, signage reminding everyone to always wear their masks, double up on cleaning, and find alternative dining configurations. Our Human Resources Department installed a hightech scanner which reads temperatures of all employees and asks CDC recommended questions to identify infected individuals prior to starting their shift. I am extremely pleased to report that we have had very few cases, and each of those were identified quickly to prevent the spread.

Now that we are safe at the Club, what can you do to enjoy it this Fall? Good news! You have lots of options! With the latest Executive Orders, Bowling leagues have been able to resume. If bowling isn’t your thing, make a reservation to utilize our Fitness Center and train with Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski. Right now is a great time to focus on getting in better shape and being healthy. The Club is also offering indoor tennis lessons and drills for the Fall and Winter through Tennis Director Dmitri Diakonov down the street at the Lochmoor Club facility. Our Food and Beverage Team has planned a full calendar of activities as well to keep you entertained with To-Go Programs, engaging activities both on-site and off-site, and Chef Colby’s unique weekly specials.

Lastly, I would like to remind you to make your reservation for the Annual Meeting on November 12. Your Board of Directors and I will be presenting the details about the past year as well as a look to the future. As I write this, we are permitted to seat 60 people in our Ballroom due to the revised restrictions so we will be using multiple rooms to accommodate those who attend. Thank you again for continued support. If you ever have any questions related to the Club, I am always just one call away, or stop by and say hi! I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon.

COMMODORE’S CORNER Vision 2026 On November 12, it will be my pleasure to take the helm as the 88th Commodore of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Thank you to Commodore Gary Gonzalez for his leadership over the past year. He led us through the resolution of high-water mitigation, and he rose to the challenge of guiding us through the challenges of a global pandemic. Covid has affected all our lives personally – at our Club, in our businesses and in the way we navigate the world every day. Commodore G1 (I will always be G2) did a tremendous job, and I thank him on behalf of the entire Club.

Looking forward to the Annual Meeting, we will welcome two new members to our Board of Directors, Ms. Amy Kruger Malow and Mr. Joe Backer. We look forward to their input and insight into our Club’s operation. To make room for them to join the Board, Commodore Gonzalez will become a member of the exclusive “Past Commodore Club.” In addition, leaving the Board is my long-time friend and sailing supporter extraordinaire Past Commodore Jim Morrow. Jim served on our Board from 1987-1994 and 2016-2020. Jim, we thank you also for your timeless commitment to our Club.

Our strategic planning, led by Director Rick Lueders, gives the Board a long-term road map for the Club. Named Vision 2026, the plan details the Board’s goals for the next five years. With 100 percent of the Board committing to this plan’s order and timing, members will be sure to see continual improvement in all aspects of the Club.

Capital improvements this year will be based on availability of funds, as well as those monies from our 501 3 tax deductible foundation lead by Jim Mestdagh and Dave Breen.

Some of the upcoming unseen Club improvements will be new make up air systems in our kitchen with air conditioning, windows in the accounting office, new power transformer for the entire building, and base transfer switch and switch gear for a backup generator. In addition, the circular windows on the ceiling of the Main Dining Room will be replaced.

Part of vison 2026 will include Clubhouse updates. Fellow member Patrick Ahearn designed our new “Spinnaker Club,” complete with a front hall and foyer upgrade. Thank you, Pat, for offering your expertise to this project.

These improvements will be funded via donations from members to our foundation. The project will not be commenced until funds are in hand.

Finally, Kathy and I would like to thank you for your support and wish that everyone remains healthy and safe.

Remember, GPYC is a year-round Club. We wish you an early Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

by Forbes as Top Yacht Club Worldwide

GPYC was recently featured in a Forbes article as one of "The Top 50 Most Exclusive Yacht Clubs in the World Honored with Platinum Status." It included this information about the GPYC: Grosse Pointe offers a 261-slip certified Clean Marina, state-of-the-art Marine Activity Center, newly renovated Bowling Recreation Center and Family Recreation Center, new Fitness Center, and Olympicsized pool. The 75,000-square-foot Clubhouse features Italian Renaissance architecture and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2015.

Staff Holiday Gift Fund

This is the time of year when members can express appreciation for the kindness, courtesy and dedication of the staff at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. This is particularly true regarding the many behind-the-scenes staff members who do not share in gratuities, but who nevertheless contribute to the overall excellence of the Club. From the cooks and dishwashers in the kitchen, to the setup crews in Catering, to the Administrative, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Security and Harbor Staff -- all are deserving of your holiday generosity. You may e-mail your gift amount to cbuffa@gpyc.org or rhauff@ gpyc.org. Forms, which can be mailed or dropped off at the Club, were also mailed out to those members who receive their statement via mail. For those who receive their statements via email, a form will

be attached to their monthly statement email. Donations are accepted until Friday, December 18.

Holiday Hours

The GPYC will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Updated Policies for Club Events & Catering

Club Events: Reservation list will be closed 72 hours prior to the event. At this time, all cancellations will be charged the price of that scheduled event.

Catering: All private events must be scheduled no later than seven business days prior to that event date. For 10 guests or less, Food & Beverage selections with final guest count must be given 72 hours before. For 10 guests or more, Food & Beverage selections with final guest count must be given seven business days prior to that event date.

We are suspending all food stations & buffets and will be doing plated meal options. This includes hors d’oeuvres displays and desserts.

Private events will be held in one space.

Multiple room bookings will not be allowed at this time.

If you would like to place a Carry Out Catering order, all orders must be placed on Wednesday of that weekend pickup.

Masks must always be worn during your scheduled event. Once seated at your table for the food service, masks can be taken off. If you are not seated at your table, masks must be worn, this includes going to the restroom or conversing with other guests while also being socially distanced.

2021 Member Guide

The Member Guide will once again be available in print. It is estimated that copies will be available in March of 2021. Once ready, the Club will alert the members, and copies will be available at the Front Desk upon request.

To enhance our communication with membership, GPYC utilizes an optional text messaging program. Participants receive key information about Club events and important news items, as well as last-minute updates such as pool/outdoor facilities closure due to inclement weather. This program is optional, and you may opt out at any time.

Kids Confection Connection

Looking for something fun to do with the kids? Our culinary staff has the perfect crafty treat for every age. GPYC will have two themed packages every month available to order – each package includes sweet treats, toppings to decorate them with and a kids’ chef hat. Order forms are available starting Wednesday the week before the pickup date and must be in by the end of business day on Tuesday for a Friday pickup. GPYC is now offering our members ready to-go pizzas, as well as kits to create your own pizza masterpiece (or use the dough to make other creation). The pizza will include high quality local ingredients unique to Michigan and detailed instructions making this a fun, easy, and delicious experience for the whole family. Members will be able to purchase kits weekly: orders must be placed on Thursdays by 2 p.m. for a pickup date on Saturday. The kit includes two raw dough balls, Michigan made pizza sauce, cheese blend, fresh mozzarella, pepperoni, Italian sausage, green pepper, white onion, cherry tomatoes, fresh garlic, fresh basil, crushed red pepper flakes, parmigiana cheese, crust seasoning, cinnamon sugar mix and white icing. Kid’s Klub

Kids' Klub is once again available on Fridays and Saturdays, from 5:30-10 p.m.

Parents have an opportunity to enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening at the Club.

Children must be three years old and potty trained. $20 for the first child, $15 for each additional child in the family.

To maintain the appropriate staff-to-child ratio, the maximum number of children who can attend Kids' Klub is 12 children per evening. Reservations are required.

92nd Annual Commodore’s Ball

Saturday, June 19, 2021 The Commodore’s Ball, in honor of incoming Commodore Gary Marowske and Lady Kathleen, will take place on June 19, 2021. While the event is traditionally held on the first Saturday of December, the date was moved to ensure the safety of our members during the pandemic. Also, current state regulations limit the capacity allowed in our Ballroom. Save the Date cards will also be sent to each member.

Charlevoix Up North Rendezvous

August 1-4, 2021 The Club is already starting to plan for 2021, and Charlevoix has been selected as the Up North Rendezvous destination.

If you would like to sign up early, please email Special Events Director Barb Walkowski at bwalkowski@gpyc.org to reserve one of our 35 wells at the Charlevoix City Marina. If you sign up for a well, a $200 deposit will be charged to your account. This is refundable if you cancel before June 1, 2021.

Also, for those who would like to drive to Charlevoix, a block of hotel rooms has been set aside for GPYC at Hotel Earl of Charlevoix. HARBOR Harbor Happenings

Your Harbor committee hopes you had an enjoyable and safe boating season. It was quite the year for the GPYC – the Harbor was at 102 percent occupancy.

Lastly, a special thank you to our Harbormaster Alex Turner for his dedication in managing our Harbor and participating with the committee. Also, the Harbor staff continues to work hard, even after boating season has ended – they will be installing 180 to 200 ice eaters in November to protect the docks and pilings from ice damage.

Looking forward to 2021, the first posting of available wells will be sent via eblast to members on Monday, January 4. Please return your 2021 lease contract renewals, along with a current insurance certificate.

We’re promoting Legacy and Social memberships as well. Even though we are dealing with the challenges of the pandemic, we have found that families have joined the GPYC because they consider our private Club to be a safe “harbor” to enjoy time with family and friends. SPORTS Fitness Update

It would be an understatement to say this year has been challenging for everybody involved. During the latter half of 2019 and beginning of 2020, the Fitness Center had well over 100 unique users, and we were already starting to outgrow our 1,000 square-foot gym. Then, as they say, “the rest is history.”

Thanks to many of you, I had the privilege of daily Zoom workouts while we spent nearly three months in quarantine. And then just as I thought we could open back up, the gym had to remain closed for an additional three months. However, I was fortunate enough during this time to have a loyal client base who welcomed me into their backyards for workouts during the hot summer months while the gym was still shut down.

As of September 9, we have been open at 25 percent capacity, or three members per hour. Masks are required, even during exercise, and you must sign up online, as reservations are also required. I appreciate

your understanding of these state rules and regulations that are designed to keep us safe.

Make Fitness Center Reservations Online GPYC's Fitness Center is now open, but please note that you must register 24 hours in advance to secure a booking.

Please register at https://gpycfitness. skedda.com/booking. Once you reserve a time slot, you will be emailed an access code to enter the Fitness Center. At this time, masks are required during exercise; towels and water will not be provided; and space is limited to no more than three people at a time. No walk-ins are allowed. Thank you for your patience as we navigate operating the Fitness Center under the current state guidelines.

Up Your Alley

GPYC was excited to welcome members back to the Bowling Recreation Center (BRC) in early October, when leagues and open bowling officially began again for the first time since February. Even with the necessary changes to stay in line with the state’s current restrictions, I am confident that we can still have a wonderful season.

As of the writing of this article in early October, we are limited to 30 bowlers in the BRC at one time. This is based on the square footage of the facility. With concerns about COVID-19, some league bowlers do not feel comfortable bowling this season, which is understandable. We will only have one mixed league this season which will bowl on Thursday Night. We do have our Monday Night Men’s League bowling along with our two once-per-month couples leagues. We normally have 36 bowlers in our couples leagues, but this season we are limiting to 24 bowlers.

Safety is a top priority in the BRC. The bowling center will be sanitized each night, and face coverings are always required.

As of now we will not be hosting any interclub tournaments or bowling parties.

We will have limited Open Bowling on every Wednesday night from 5 to 9 p.m. and every Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. We will also have open bowling twice a month on every second and fourth Friday of each month.

We have a new reservation process for open bowling. Just like GPYC’s Tennis and Fitness reservations, we will be using Skedda. The link is on the Bowling page on our website and will be included in The Weekly Buzz. The cost for open bowling is $35 per hour per lane and is limited to a two-hour block.

As for the leagues, they are all in full swing. For the Monday Night men's league, scores were high the first night.

Newcomer Charles Molnar had the high game of 244 and high series of 690. Roy Maksym had a career high game of 234.

Roy was also 154 pins over his average.

We will enjoy this season and hope for a return to normalcy sooner than later. I look
