New Additions Bring Added Value to Your Membership Now more than ever before, the Club is a true year-round Club. There are many diverse offerings throughout the fall and winter months that will keep you coming back! Make sure to check out the new Bowling Recreation Center, better known as the BRC. This newly renovated, unique space offers a great hang out area for members, even on Mondays when the rest of the Club is closed. Ever since the opening night in September, we have had great crowds down there to watch football and hockey games and others who are just enjoying a cocktail with friends. The atmosphere is contagious, and it isn’t just for bowlers. All members are invited to visit, even on league nights. The BRC also features an all-new Teen Area complete with Xbox and PlayStation 4. The Club is now the cool spot for kids, and many of them come in after school and play games after completing their homework. Our new high speed WiFi system allows you and your family to connect from anywhere on the Club grounds. The speed is sufficient enough to support gaming, movies and more on all of your devices. Many of our members who are able to work remotely have taken advantage of this amenity and now call GPYC their “alternate office.” A large part of creating excitement is to change things up and introduce new events and activities. One of the most popular new additions to the schedule is the Christmas Eve Family Dinner on Monday, December 24, from 4-7 p.m. This event will feature a grand buffet by Executive Chef Colby Newman and his culinary team. The Club will be decorated and ready for Santa’s arrival assuming everyone has been nice (not naughty). In closing, I hope you have been able to frequent the Club’s dining rooms lately. The Club has placed added emphasis on bringing you unique menu items at a great value. We understand that you have many options when it comes to dining, and we appreciate your commitment to the Club. Our goal is to deliver you the highest quality product in an efficient manner, whether it is a dry- aged wagyu filet or a simple breakfast. When entertaining friends and family, consider a special meal at the GPYC. I know you will be delighted with the experience. We look forward to seeing you. A Whole New MAST

As you can see, we have updated the interior of The MAST to make it more reader-friendly and to help members easily locate important Club news and events. Look for the upcoming December MAST, as it will feature a new cover design. We are confident you will love the new look. Our intent is for the quality of our publications to match the sophistication, elegance and traditions that make GPYC such a special place. COMMODORE’S CORNER A Culture Change from the Top Down
Key Strategies, Staff and Added Amenities Launch GPYC Forward in Its Pursuit of Excellence At this time last year, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club was venturing into unchartered waters as the search for our new general manager had just started. While the search for a new GM was not something that was new to the Club, the Board was hoping to accomplish something else that hadn’t happened in a long time – a change in the culture. At that point in time, we had just completed one of the largest renovations in the history of the GPYC – another major part of the Harbor was renovated; the Marine Activity Center and Family Recreation Center were erected; and, of course, a new Executive Chef joined the team. These are just the major highlights. This is important because these renovations and changes provided the Board with the building blocks needed to begin a cultural change. The change started at the very top with how the Board self-conducted its business. The only way to change this was to ensure the correct general manager was hired. The reason for this is because the Board wanted to get out of the day-to-day operations and advise a general manager on their concerns verses actually having to make the changes in operations. This allowed the Board to operate from a 30,000-foot level and concentrate on the strategic issues that were troubling the Club. With the hiring of Aaron Wagner last November, this provided the Board with that opportunity. So, in late 2017, the Board began to devise its strategic plan for not only 2018 but also was able to provide guidance to future clubs, as we move the GPYC forward. Once the Board decided strategically on the Club’s most important current issues and future needs, the fun really started. Project wise, we’ve accomplished a lot: the men’s locker room renovation, splash pad coating, erection of a fence around the play area, upgrade of the entire WiFi system and the restoration of the Rotunda to its original glory. Also, the Harbor Smoker & Kitchen area was built, and the kitchen received some long overdue equipment replacement. To top this all off, the bowling alley was finally renovated to become our new Bowling Recreation Center. The staff at the GPYC also saw its fair share of change. After Aaron was hired as our new GM, he had to begin to assemble his team and hire into several key positions. The GPYC welcomed Jim DeMasse as our new CFO, while Joe Hooge transitioned from head bartender to our new food and beverage director. In the Catering Department, Barb Walkowski was promoted to catering director, and Karleen Bacha was hired as our new catering coordinator. In our Membership Department, Anna Swartz was hired as our communications manager. In addition, Emily Simon took over as the junior sailing director, and Nick Valice became our new head swim coach. With the help of our seasoned employees, I think it is fair to say that with all the new leaders, the entire staff has been able to elevate their game by allowing each other to do what they do best. In the end though, it is the little things that matter. The attention to detail is what is going to return us to being the number one yacht club in the country. With the added amenities, a dedicated staff and this eye towards detail, I think it is not too big of a stretch to get the GPYC back to being number one. And, why not? Sure, there are still things that need to change. But it is the ability to recognize what needs to change and how to get it done that separates us from most. That is why I would put our staff, building and membership up against any yacht club in the country. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season,
Sean M. Schotthoefer Commodore

MEMBERSHIP
MATTERS As we head into the holiday season, keep the GPYC in mind for gatherings with family and friends. The more we showcase our beautiful clubhouse and demonstrate exceptional service, the better the opportunity to recruit more members. Although we have been successful recruiting members this past spring and summer, it is important to convey to prospective members that we are a yearround, award-winning club. With the completion of the Bowling Recreation Center (BRC) renovation, permanent bar and the new Teen Center, the BRC is a perfect venue to hang out with friends and family in a casual setting over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Also, keep in mind that our doors will be open this year on Christmas Eve for dinner. Not only do we want to showcase the club and recruit over the holidays, we’re here to make our member’s lives a little easier and enjoyable. We hope that you will consider taking advantage of all we have to offer. Happy Holidays! Membership Director Susan Hughes

SPORTS
Up Your Alley The bowling season kicked off with a big splash with the Grand Opening of the newly renovated Bowling Recreation Center (BRC). Our leagues are now in full swing. In the Monday Men’s League, Tom Stephenson wasted little time in finding his groove. Tom opened up with 235 and 257 for a 692 series. No sandbagging here. Bill Johnston chipped in with a 245 game. For the Wednesday Night League, Julie Granger was high for the gals with a 192 game while Bill Vogel started out with a 205 game. Top honors for the Thursday Morning Ladies went to Dianna Smith with a 168 game.
We still have some openings in the Monday Night Men’s league and the Thursday Morning Ladies league. If you are interested in joining any of these leagues or would like to sub in any of our leagues, email me at gwoods@gpyc.org. We have some exciting events coming to the BRC. We will have tailgate parties for a number of Lions games. Check for details in upcoming issues of The Weekly Buzz. We will have open bowling on Saturdays from 4- 10 p.m. each Saturday, as long as there are no parties booked. To make sure lanes are available that evening, call the Bowling Center at (313) 640-7005 or the Front Desk at (313) 884-2500.
