Q: How can I ensure I leave behind a legacy? A: Most of us want to leave this world knowing we made a difference in the lives of family and friends, our community, and even the world. Our legacy is as unique as we are – a culmination of personal priorities, passions and experiences. A helpful first step is discussing your options with your spouse or partner, especially if you built your wealth together. It’s also important to talk about your legacy plans with heirs.
Once you have a clear idea of your wishes, consult the experts, including a wealth planner, tax advisor and other financial and legal professionals. Below are a few strategies to consider: • Property Setting up a family limited partnership or trust can offer tax breaks and allow the transfer of ownership among family members. • Personal belongings Although an heirloom might not have much market value, it can have considerable sentimental value, creating conflict among family members. Avoid potential disputes by indicating who will inherit these heirlooms. Fifth Third Private Bank is a division of • Cash gifts Give money to heirs while you are living to reduce estate taxes — or gift it to charity. • Stock Bequest depreciating stock to your favorite charity, which lowers your tax bill and has no tax consequences for the charity. Keep in mind, whatever your legacy goals, it’s important to take care of your own retirement financial needs first. One of my favorite holidays is Thanksgiving because it is a very laid-back time. Families and friends gather to share great food and camaraderie while watching their beloved Detroit Lions attempt to win (or at least keep the score close).

I have fond memories of my childhood where we would all pack up and head down to the Thanksgiving Day Parade in downtown Detroit. While watching the parade and enjoying a hot chocolate, my mother always reinforced the fact that the Santa Clauses I saw at malls and otherwise were merely pretend – but the Santa at the Thanksgiving Day Parade was the real deal! My brothers and I were in awe at the end of the parade when Santa would show up riding the giant sleigh. I should note that we do not use “Mall Santas” at the Club. We always coordinate with the real Santa for our events as well! Traditions are what ties us together and allows us to create memories that last a lifetime. Last year we began a new tradition where we invite children to submit letters to Santa via our North Pole Mailbox in the Lobby (pictured). Since we have a direct relationship with Santa, each child received a letter back from Santa acknowledging their wishes. The North Pole Mailbox will be positioned in the Lobby beginning November 1. There are so many fun things surrounding Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season, but I think the most important part of this special time is to give thanks for all of life’s blessings. I hope you will join us on Sunday, November 10 for an inspiring presentation in honor of our veterans who protect our freedom. Representatives from Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs will be discussing the importance of these specially trained dogs providing services to veterans. There will be a few veterans telling their stories of heroics and struggles following their service. Veterans Day is not limited to just veterans – we encourage everyone to attend! I hope to see you at these events and more in November and as always, I strongly recommend making reservations as early as possible to guarantee a spot. Please contact the Front Desk at switchboard@gpyc.org or (313) 884-2500 to make your reservations for the Veterans Brunch on November 10 and Thanksgiving on November 28. Smooth sailing,
Aaron Wagner

COMMODORE’S CORNER Esprit De Corps As my Commodore year draws to a close, I chose to not reflect on the challenges that were encountered but rather on how those challenges were met. With many of the actions set in motion by prior leadership, we were well positioned to pursue our goal of being a club for all seasons by heightening attention to member services, improving quality, and attending to detail. As a result of our efforts, the GPYC remained one of the only Clubs in the area to maintain all services, including a fully functional harbor, regardless of the record high water levels. We met this year’s challenges due to the right composition of Board members who were not only willing to put forth their time and effort, but also willing to share their wisdom from a broad spectrum of experience. Added to that, a dedicated group of committee chairs and their members led the charge on recommending improvements and innovative practices to better serve club members. To execute the details, we relied on our dedicated management team and employees who believe in the mission and the leadership. So, if you ask, “What are this year’s most compelling achievements?” – I would not focus on the obvious ones like the high water mitigation, Fitness Center or Harbor improvements but rather a resurgence in members’ pride of the Club and esprit d’ corps among the membership and the staff as well. The membership has responded positively with almost every event sold out, record attendance at the pool, record membership in sailing and tennis, and a resurgence in swim team athletes. The renovated Grog Shop lead by Leah Schroeder was sold out of logo wear multiple times as pride in wearing the GPYC burgee grew. We have a beautiful Club and an incredible staff. Even though new challenges will present themselves, we are in a stronger position now both financially and in membership numbers than we have been in many years to address those challenges. I have had the distinct honor and pleasure of being part of the Club leadership and can say with certainty we are in extremely capable hands going forward. Finally, I learned from previous Commodores that their spouses or significant others played an important role in their success whether it was in the forefront or more in the background. I am no exception. I am grateful that I had Kelley by my side this year. She worked tirelessly to ensure details were not missed and everyone felt welcome. I thank her for her support. Kelley and I are sad the year is coming to a close but excited to support the new leadership. I wish everyone a wonderful Fall and look forward to seeing you around the Club!

Mark Knope’s show will take you on a mental “roller coaster ride” as he discusses his experiences involving being divorced (a.k.a. being a “Born-Again Bachelor) as well as his love of golf, his distaste for snow/cold weather, and the perils of (gasp) physical therapy. No two shows are exactly alike, as Knope energetically sprinkles with audience improvisation.
