We have come to the end of our fiscal year, and it is time to reflect on the many things which have occurred. I have been a general manager of two clubs over the span of five years, with almost 15 years of total management experience, and I have to say this past year was the most rewarding of all.

I am pleased to report the Food and Beverage Program surpassed not only the budgeted goals, but also last year’s actuals by a wide margin. I am also happy to report our team has found ways to reduce expenses in order to run the Club with a healthy operating profit. While it was a year to celebrate, it also brought about some unique challenges. The most significant of which was the fact the water level was higher than ever and caused damage to multiple areas of the Harbor and Clubhouse. Your Board and Management Team acted swiftly to manage the situation by installing several sump pumps within the Clubhouse and large-scale jet pumps in the parking lot in strategic locations. You may have noticed the parking lot and driveway were flooded earlier in the season? It isn’t dry today because of receding water. It is dry because of those jet pumps working overtime to keep the water out. Special thanks to member Bob Kaiser for donating those jet pumps! Your Harbor Committee and Staff also worked tirelessly to protect the docks and safeguard against any stray electrical current by testing areas daily. The Army Corps of Engineers have predicted a steady rise of water level to continue over the next decade, so the issues will only become exponentially greater. The Board is working with the Harbor Committee currently to create a proposal to mitigate these issues and create a long-term solution. Much of the funding for this will come from donations, as you can imagine. If you are interested in this worthy investment, please reach out to me and I will outline the program options. I would like to also remind everyone to take some time to complete the survey that was sent out to you and your spouse. We send these surveys every two years in order to gain valuable feedback which then becomes the roadmap for our future projects and focuses. The Board will be sharing the summarized results at this year’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 14. We hope you will join us for this traditional update to the membership. Smooth sailing,
Aaron Wagner

COMMODORE’S CORNER
The Fun and Camaraderie Continues
With the Fall in full swing and Winter just around the corner you can be sure the Club is busy working on providing first class meals and staging wonderful events for all ages. From trap shooting, bowling and fitness to euchre and book clubs, the Club is alive with activity. Fall is a great time to consider joining one of our many committees. As you walk into the lobby, you will see on the left side, just before the reception desk, a picture frame that includes the chairpersons of key committees. There is no expense associated with committee membership, and it is a great way to make new friends with similar interests. The Club would be a different place and the Board would not be able to succeed without the input and effort of our committees. If you are interested in joining a committee for 2019-2020, contact our General Manager Aaron Wagner, and he will put you in touch with the right person. In the same frame, you will see pictures of your Club’s management team. These individuals are critical to the ongoing success of this club. They are always eager to receive your feedback, so be sure to reach out to them with any concerns, questions or praise. As the boating season ends, the ongoing battle with Mother Nature continues, in the harbor and on Club grounds. The Board and Management will be working diligently this Fall, Winter and Spring to ensure we stay on top of the high-water issue. We will continue to communicate updates regarding this as the year progresses. While it may seem that the holidays are in the distant future, I hope you will include the GPYC in your holiday plans. There are so many ways the Club can help you celebrate and relieve some of the stress that comes with entertaining family and friends during the busy holiday season. I encourage you to make reservations for holiday parties or large tables in advance, as most of our events have been selling out early. Thank you to everyone who has completed the survey. Your input is necessary – as the Board reviews the strategic plan, it should align with member wishes. As you look at the key events below, I hope that you will consider attending the Annual meeting on November 14. This meeting involves the Club's leadership and is a great way to not only meet them but hear all the latest and greatest club related news. I wish you all a wonderful Fall and look forward to seeing you around the Club! Upcoming Events: October 6 - Fall Family Fun Auto Show October 25 - Children’s Halloween Party November 2 - Lauderdale Yacht Club Dinner November 10 - Veterans Brunch November 14 - Annual Meeting

Line Cook and Pastry Chef Kalindi Engle By General Manager Aaron Wagner
The GPYC’s culinary program is known as one of the finest in the nation. Unfortunately, most members never get to meet the “behind the scenes” workers who make it all happen. The Staff Spotlight is intended to shed light on those folks. This month we chose to spotlight Kalindi Engle (pronounced KAH-LIN-DEE). Kalindi is our afternoon/evening line cook. She is responsible for all the major proteins, somehow managing to prep and cook dozens of steaks and chops at the correct temperature and in good time for our members to enjoy in the dining rooms. She started honing her craft at Bobby Moore’s Blind Fish almost 30 years ago, but she always had her eye on the GPYC. “Every time I drove by it on Lake Shore I was awestruck by the beauty of the club and how it sits by the lake,” Kalindi said. “As I was already cooking at a different restaurant, one day just for fun I filled out a GPYC application with no expectations. To my delight, I received a call from Sous Chef John Moore. He said the Club didn’t have any full-time positions available. I was so determined to get my foot in the door that I asked if he would just meet me to talk. After meeting John, the Club offered me the position of expediter. It was not what I applied for originally, but I gladly accepted it because it was clear that they were doing their best to get me in.”
Kalindi shares her passion with her husband Don Engle who is the Executive Chef at Bay Pointe Golf Club in West Bloomfield.
Not long after that, Kalindi was promoted to line cook, but that was not all. Her true passion is baking, and she had been planning for years to open her own bakery. It was a tough balancing act because she required a full-time job to support her family, but also wanted to find time to pursue her passion. Where some executive chefs may have viewed this dream as a distraction to the operation, Chef Colby embraced it and encouraged her to pursue it. It ended up being a win-win all around because Kalindi is the proud owner of “Kalindi’s Cakes and Pies” in Roseville. She is truly a wonder woman as she works at her bakery from early morning through the afternoon then comes to the GPYC to work as line cook. The Club uses her pastries for many of the large-scale events and features them on the dessert menu.

Founder's Club Dear Fellow Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Members,
Over the past few years our beloved Club has gone through a tremendous amount of change. All these changes have helped us to continue in our strive toward excellence and to maintain our standing as one of the premier private clubs in the country. The improvements and additions that have been made to our Club have been truly for everyone from small children to adults. I am incredibly excited about everything that has been happening. I initially donated an amount of $25,000 to put towards our club, and after witnessing all that has been accomplished, I am raising my commitment to $50,000. These new changes have helped and will continue to engender the club to remain a place for building relationships and making valuable connections. Some of the recent developments include:
-Beautiful new Marine Activity Center -Trap shooting capabilities -PWC and sail island(s) located in the harbor -Harbor South Wall renovation -New pickle ball courts -New sub-irrigated clay tennis courts -State-of-the-art playscape -Splash pad -Advanced Fitness Center -Total Grog Shop upgrade -Harbor building window replacement -Bowling Recreation Center (BRC) total reconstruction -Teen Center -Complete Fo'c’sle remodel -Improved entrance buoys into harbor -New smoker grill and prep area -Larger pizza oven -New up-to-date accounting office -New employee break room -Family Recreation Center Pergola -Complete upgrade of men's and women’s locker rooms -New diving board and electronic swim record board -New donor recognition board -Complete refurbishment of service elevator
Thanks to members' generosity, GPYC opens long-awaited Fitness Center
L-R: Erica Panagopoulos, Courtney Drummy and Alyson Squires in the Club's first-ever fitness center, which opened in August 2019.
None of these improvements could have been made without any of us, the members. So far $2.6 million has been committed through the newly initiated Founder’s Club for the enhancement of the GPYC. To date over 200 of our near 800 members have participated by their generous donations to this philanthropy – thank you. I strongly encourage you to consider donating and joining this growing group of committed members. Boardroom Magazine recently named the GPYC as a 2019 Distinguished Club, but we have known that our Club is special for years. It is a place for families to come together, for relationships to be nurtured, and for traditions to continue from generation to generation. However, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club cannot endure without the help and generosity of its members. Over the next few years we hope to add food and beverage service to the Family Recreation Center, renovate and reconstruct the moat bridge, install new scoring software in the Bowling Recreation Center, update the doors and trim in the East Foyer of the clubhouse, and make repairs to the foundation and the Binnacle windows. Lastly, we know how the high-water levels have impacted our club this summer. We will need to continue to make unforeseen repairs due to damage caused by this. Please, help me with this cause. For many of us, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is not just a private club, it is a second home. Let’s keep it that way for generations to come. Sincerely, John Mager

MEMBERSHIP We’re Off to a Good Start!
The fiscal year has come to a close and you’ll be pleased to know that the member count has increased over the past year. We started the year with 762 members and are now at 790. Thanks to all the members who referred candidates for membership. We also were able to reduce the number of members who left the Club primarily due to added amenities, and improved programs and services. Please continue to keep the referrals coming. As we enter the fall season, boaters will be making arrangements for off-season storage and making plans for next year’s boating season. Now is the time to recruit them before they make decisions on marinas for 2020. Just a reminder that if you refer a candidate for membership and they join, you will receive a $500 credit on your GPYC account. Please don’t hesitate to call me with questions at (313) 640-3188. Susan Hughes Membership Director
MATTERS Social Members
Have you ever considered harboring a boat at the GPYC?
This is the perfect time to consider it. From October 1 through December 31, 2019, Social members may transfer to the Active classification without a fee – a savings of up to $4,000. From January 1 to March 31, 2020, Social members have an opportunity to transfer to Active for 50% of the fee. Please note: If the Social member is on the Initiation Deferment/Installment Program, the initiation fee must be paid in full. Additionally, the Social member will have to be a GPYC member for one year in order to make the transfer and take advantage of the savings. Call Susan Hughes at (313) 640-3188 if you have questions regarding the program. Years as a full dues paying Social member will not apply toward Senior eligibility. Senior member eligibility only applies to a 25 year, full dues paying Active member.
Did You Know?
Reciprocity at Yacht Clubs Worldwide
Your GPYC membership entitles you to not only enjoy the amenities of your home Club, but to reciprocity at yacht clubs worldwide. The general understanding amongst yacht clubs (not country clubs or city clubs) is that our members will receive reciprocal dining privileges. These clubs will simply ask for a letter of introduction from the GPYC. If you are traveling or simply want to enjoy a meal at a local yacht club, arrangements can be made by contacting the GPYC. To ensure that we have enough time to process a members’ reciprocity request, please contact us at least a week prior to your planned visit. To make reciprocal arrangements, contact GPYC’s Evening Receptionist Michelle Browning at switchboard@gpyc.org or (313) 884-2500.

Importance of Good Posture
"Sit up straight!" "Don't slouch!" “Shoulders back!” I'm sure we've all heard those words more than once from our Moms while we were growing up. Most of us would roll our eyes and as soon as Mom walked away we’d slump back over in a hunch. Little did you know that she wasn’t just annoyed with how you were standing or sitting, there is scientific reasoning backing her words. And plus, Moms always know best.
We have our Open Bowling on Friday evenings from 5-10 p.m. and Saturdays from Noon until 10 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and $5 shoe rental for unlimited bowling. Brunch and Bowl is back. From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Sunday, anyone enjoying brunch may also come down to the Bowling Recreation Center for complimentary bowling. If you want a great way to entertain guests, hosting a bowling party is a perfect way to do so. The cost for the bowling is $35 per hour per lane and $5 for shoe rental. If you are interested in hosting a bowling party, give our catering office a call or on posture, on staff. If you are looking for ways to improve your posture or just get in a good stretch, I highly suggest reaching out to Lindsay. You can email her at: livingwatersyogadetroit@gmail.com. Pricing is $35/half hour or $60/hour for personal training. As always, please visit me in the Fitness Center with any questions! Best in Health, Peter Wendzinski Fitness Director
Sustaining a good posture is a big part of your health. It ensures that your bones are well aligned with the rest of the body, while the tension in your muscles and ligaments is properly distributed. More so, it keeps the body parts in their rightful positions with minimal stress. Regularly incorporating yoga or other similar exercises can help build strength and improve flexibility in postural muscles so that you're better able to maintain proper spine curvatures.
