Get Ready for a Fall Full of Fun

Even though the Summer took a while to get here, it was an all-time great season. Thanks to our members and committees, the activity level at the Club was amazing from the record number of participants in our children’s programs, attendance at all our key events, opening of our first-ever Fitness Center, lots of sold out rendezvous, and even a blowout concert by Your Generation that flooded the East Lawn and Pool Deck with members and friends! How can we top all of that? I don’t typically feel this way because I love warm weather, but I can’t wait for Fall! We have several brand-new events and activities scheduled for the whole family starting with the Autumn Driving Cruise on September 21. Time to wax your Ferrari, Yugo or Hog! Join your fellow members on a “Blue Water” driving tour along Lake St. Clair to Port Huron. Sticking with the auto theme, we have reinvented what used to be the Annual Auto Preview and have created the Fall Family Fun Auto Show on Sunday, October 6. This event will blend together a preview of all the new models coming out this year courtesy of our member auto dealers, as well as classic and exotic cars owned by our members. If you would like to display one of your classic or exotic beauties, please email me at awagner@gpyc.org. All of this will take place at our Family Recreation Center with activities for children and adults to keep you entertained. I would like to give a shout out to Lady Kelley Vreeken and Special Events Director Kathy VandeLaare for rejuvenating the Couples Fall Getaway in October. This trip will be amazing—featuring a tour of the New York Yacht Club, accommodations at the famous Vanderbilt Hotel, and seeing all of the sights in and around Newport, Rhode Island. Rumor has it that the America’s Cup Sailing Team will be practicing in the bay during this time, and our group will get to see the action! I will close by saying thank you again for all your support this past summer season. I hope you mark your calendar to enjoy some fun fall events and utilize our Fitness Center. See you soon at the Club. Smooth sailing,

Aaron Wagner

COMMODORE’S CORNER

Break Out the Fall Sweaters!

The good news about September: we are past Fish Fly season, and there is still plenty of good weather ahead for boating and other recreational activities at the the Club. So break out the sweaters and come hang out! As you already know, the new Fitness Center has opened, and activities are in full swing. We always want to welcome new participants so be sure to give our fitness facility a try. I am confident you will enjoy the experience. We are fortunate to have onboard much acclaimed Yoga Instructor Ms. Lindsay Holder. We can now offer great options that are non-impact and improve your flexibility and balance. I think you will like what has been put in place to support the health and well being of Club members. The next time you are in the clubhouse, I encourage you visit the hallway near the bowling area. What was once the Trophy Hall has been transformed into a “Heritage Gallery”. Take some time to review the pictures, memorabilia and trophies that pay tribute to our Club’s deep heritage. Many thanks to the Heritage Committee for the many hours spent making this a reality. Speaking of Bowling, I expect record enrollment in our fall and winter leagues so please be sure to sign up early. If Tennis, Paddle or Pickleball are your thing then be sure to look at the options that are available for late summer and early fall. As we transition to the fall season, keep an eye on The Weekly Buzz, our E-newsletter, for seasonal changes in our hours of operation. Information about dining, swimming, splash pad, tennis and pickleball will be provided for your convenience. It is well known that this summer season is ending with record high water levels throughout the Great Lakes region. While we have managed to address the high water levels, your Board and management team have not stopped working on corrective actions so the Club is prepared for next year’s anticipated high water levels. We think it is important to develop a strategic approach that gives us maximum benefit with minimal disruption to our membership. We will be communicating next steps as soon as the final details of our approach are determined. Also, be sure to put these upcoming events on your calendar: • Milliken Rendezvous, September 13-15 • Autumn Driving Cruise, September 21 • Fall Family Auto Show, October 6 • Newport, RI Members-Only Fall Getaway, October 11-13 Looking forward to seeing you around the Club, Cover Photo: New Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski with members (L-R) Erica Panagopoulos and Courtney Drummy in the Club’s first-ever Fitness Center. The Club celebrated the grand opening on August 15.

Discussion Pointes

Wednesday, September 11 | 7 p.m. The Discussion Pointes Series continues with GPYC member, JT Mestdagh, who is a boater, extreme skier, and mountaineer, as well as a newly published author. His memoir, Untether, tells a story of difficult personal trials and, ultimately, resilience. Diagnosed as an infant with VATER/VACTERL association, a genetic disorder that affects multiple body systems, Mestdagh endured almost a year in hospitals before he turned three. He underwent 16 surgeries before the age of 16. He was further challenged by a diagnosis of severe dyslexia and shortterm memory loss in fourth grade. His teachers thought he faced a life of illiteracy in addition to his physical challenges. Mestdagh’s parents saw him through years of medical treatments and ongoing searches for a learning program that would help him read. In fifth grade, they discovered TATTUM Reading, an integrated phonics program that worked for the young Mestdagh. Mestdagh surpassed his doctors’ and teachers’ expectations and went on to write his memoir and even climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Sales of Untether (available on Amazon.com) benefit the non-profit JT Mestdagh Foundation, which supports children, adults, and families facing life with colorectal diseases and VATER/ VACTERL syndrome, as well as those with dyslexia and other learning differences. Please RSVP to the Front Desk for this event.

MEMBERSHIP Moving in a Positive Direction The Club Management Association of America (CMAA) published an article on determining the financial health of a private club. In order to create uniformity in the way the club industry discusses and compares member counts, the recommendation was made for clubs to determine a "full member equivalent" (FME) in an effort to compare "apples to apples." The FME is calculated by dividing the club's total dues revenue by the amount a full member pays in dues per year. The article indicated that the national median for all clubs is 461. GPYC's FME at this time is 517. In the future, I will be tracking and reporting the FME to the Membership Committee on a monthly basis.

MATTERS

I am pleased to report that the number of lost members year-to-date is significantly down from the past two years.

Membership Activity Year-to-Date 2017 2018 2019 New Members YTD: 60 70 72 Lost Members YTD: 58 63 41 Member Count: 767 764 793 It is also important to note that we have been able to recruit 72 new members this year who have paid the full initiation fee upfront. Last year, the Pilot Program was in place, where candidates for membership only paid 50% of the initiation fee. 50% was paid July 1, 2018, and the remaining 50% was paid July 2019. Now that the Fitness Center is fully operational, we have a good chance of continuing to improve recruitment as we approach the fall season.

Did You Know?

Fitness Center Funded by Club’s Philanthropy Programs

While all Club members are probably aware that a new fitness facility has been built in the former accounting office space, they may not know how this project was funded. This major club improvement was made possible by member donations to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Foundation, an independent 501(c)3 organization dedicated to preserving the historic Clubhouse. The total cost of the Fitness Center renovation is approximately $225,000, and $202,088 in donations has been committed to this project thus far. To ensure that the Club would be able to complete the project this summer, several Board of Directors members stepped up to guarantee the payments while fundraising continues. If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the Fitness Center project, please contact Gary Marowske at (586) 2158701. Also, please note that in addition to the Foundation, the Centennial Fund (nontax deductible) collects donations for vital improvements on Club grounds. These projects include Harbor renovations, the Marine Activity Center and the Family Recreation Center.

HARBOR

HAPPENINGS

Wow, it’s hard to believe that September is upon us. We hope you have had a safe and enjoyable summer boating season. Thankfully, there will be plenty of great fall boating ahead before it is time to lay up the boats for the winter. We hope you have noticed improved quality in our harbor and staff this summer. Harbor Master Alex Turner has once again done an outstanding job overseeing our bustling harbor for another successful season.

If you are looking for a fun boating opportunity, don’t forget about the Milliken Rendezvous, September 13-15. There is currently a wait list for boats to dock at the marina (call the Front Desk to get on the list), but all are welcome to join in the fun by going on the bus bar crawl or joining the catered Italian dinner by LaLanterna on Saturday. Participating is a great way to enjoy the fellowship of your GPYC friends and family. As always, please remember the rules when entering and leaving the Harbor: The Entrance Buoys are installed at our harbor entrance. Please keep in mind of the following • When leaving or entering the harbor, stay between the red and green buoys. • Nighttime: buoys are lit with flashing red and green lights (stay between red & green). • Buoys are a NO WAKE area - you must be at IDLE speed between buoys. • Boats leaving the harbor have the right of way. • Cutting between buoys is not permitted – this includes PWCs, power boats and sailboats. Please feel free to email Alex Turner or me with your thoughts, concerns and comments. Your feedback is always welcome.

Fitness Center Hours, Age Requirements & Childcare Services

Time to Set Sail in the Fitness Center

I often tell people who are hesitant about working out, “the hardest part about working out is getting to the gym.” There are plenty of days when you are tired, lazy, don’t have time, and don’t want to get out of bed or off your couch. When life gets busy and our schedules get full, sacrificing time at the gym is often one of the first things we eliminate from our daily routines. If you find yourself busy and not having enough time, start small. A half hour workout is only 2 percent of your day. Commit to one to two workouts per week at a certain time that is conducive to your schedule and grow from there. If going to the gym seems like a chore, I suggest working out with a partner, taking a class, or setting up a personal training session. These are great ways to stay motivated while working out. Bringing along a friend is helpful because you can motivate each other to work harder and can make the experience a lot more fun. By taking a class or setting up a personal training session, it gives you the responsibility and accountability of making working out a priority. Having someone coach you and teach you new ways to workout can inspire you to keep going. Please visit me in the Fitness Center with any questions! Best in Health, Peter Wendzinski Fitness Director

The Fitness Center is open daily between the hours of 5 a.m.-10 p.m. The center is free for members to use, with the option to pay for personal training and boot camp group lessons. To gain access to the center, simply type in 0 followed by your four-digit member ID. You must be at least 16 years of age and have completed a waiver form before using the facility. Children between 13-15 are allowed only if they are being trained by a GPYC Fitness professional. If you are under 18, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. These forms are available online

at https://www.gpyc.org/Activities/Fitness, or you can fill them out in person at the Fitness Center. We are also pleased to announce that childcare services will be available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-Noon. The cost is $5 per hour per child. Children must be potty trained. Please contact pwendzinski@gpyc.org if you are interested in childcare, as advanced registration is encouraged due to limited space. If you have any questions, please contact Peter Wendzinski at pwendzinski@gpyc.org.

The bad news: our 2019 summer is coming to an end. The good news: bowling season is here. Our leagues will be starting the week of October 7. Last season we were at near capacity, and we are hoping to have every league filled this season. Our league schedule is as follows: Monday Night Men’s (men only) | 7 p.m. Wednesday Night League (men and women) | 7 p.m. Thursday Morning Ladies (women only) | 10 a.m. Thursday Night League (men and women) Friday Couples #1: 1st Friday of the Month, starts October 4 Friday Couples #2: 3rd Friday of the Month, starts October 18 The Friday Night Couples Leagues are very popular with our newer members. This helps them get to know other new members, along with our current members. You do not have to be an

12

established bowler to join any of our leagues. The goal of all leagues is for our membership to have fun. I always hear that members don’t join our bowling program because they are not good enough. Remember: I also give free bowling lessons. If you are interested in joining our bowling program, contact me at (313) 640-7005 or gwoods@gpyc.org for more information. The annual Bowling Kick-off Party will be held on Friday, September 27. We are having the pinsetters redone, and we are hoping to have the project completed by October 4. We are looking forward to another successful bowling season and can’t wait to see everyone. Gordy Woods GPYC Director of Bowling

Tennis and Pickleball Update It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone, and the season is winding down. First and foremost, I want to thank all the adult and junior members who have played pickle and tennis with us. I also want to express my gratitude to those who participated in the tennis and pickle tournaments last month. The Family Recreation Center (FRC) is such a beautiful space, and it has been wonderful to see its growth over the past few years. The growth in pickleball has been particularly tremendous – I love seeing the area so busy! I have no doubt that this growth will continue, and the FRC will be the backdrop of countless memories to be made. Though it is September, there are still plenty of chances to get out on the courts. Adult group and private lessons for both

pickleball and tennis will continue through September. Brian will remain on campus and also be available for adult tennis lessons and after school junior group or private lessons. As we enter the fall season, please continue to watch the tennis emails as always for scheduling adjustments and changes.
