Similar to last year, we have created a stand-alone publication that allows us to better acknowledge the vital support you and thousands of others provided to this special school during the past year. In addition, the report “brings to life” and helps celebrate the positive impact and generosity of the Tower Hill community. We achieved a remarkable figure of $662,586* for the 2006-2007 Annual Fund, surpassing last year’s contributions by 7% and increasing our Annual Fund total over the past two years by over $120,000! These unrestricted contributions close the gap between tuition income and our day-to-day operating costs and are used where the school’s needs are greatest. Most importantly, these gifts ensure that we maintain the tradition of excellence in educating our students in academics, arts and athletics, while providing the best possible resources for our faculty. We also completed the first year of our capital campaign, and to date your generosity has produced $8,214,153 toward our goal of $12 million. With your contributions, we have completed the initial phase of renovations transforming our athletic/physical education facilities. Committed to sustaining an ambitious agenda, we plan to conclude the remaining phases of the renovations during the next few years. Your support, together with our first-class faculty/staff and our tremendous facilities, helps us sustain our prominence as one of the finest independent schools in the country. ver the years Winkie and I have attended various Tower Hill events for our grandchildren, and afterward, we always say to ourselves, “Wow, aren’t we lucky?!” It really takes your breath away. Being part of the Tower Hill family means a lot to us. Our grandchildren are getting a solid education, but Tower Hill offers so much more than that...it’s a whole package. We are convinced that the Tower Hill experience will give our grandchildren the skills and abilities to do whatever they want in life—and to do it with confidence. For us, giving to the Annual Fund is really an investment in our future. If you believe in your children and your family and you are in a position to give, where else could you derive as much satisfaction as by supporting your grandchildren? We realize that the tuition alone at Tower Hill is insufficient to cover the cost of a student’s education. Supporting the Annual Fund helps to fund gaps in the school’s operating budget and ensures that Tower Hill has the best teachers, coaches, mentors and programs for our grandchildren.

or me, the Annual Fund represents that extra “heart” that we can give the students at Tower Hill. Tuition does not cover all our operating expenses. Here we find a means of providing curricular development and many wonderful experiences that we can bring into the school for the children. Things cost more nowadays. As a school we’re discovering that programs that help us to retain faculty and enhance their skills are more expensive. The Annual Fund allows us to provide more for the children; it allows us to dream and to reach for those things that might have been unattainable otherwise, whether new curricula or new faculty development programs. If we are committed to providing for our children, we need to demonstrate that commitment by participating in the Annual Fund, no matter the dollar figure. We should require ourselves to do so. In the end, it’s all about the kids.

hen your children are young, they are like sponges soaking up every bit of knowledge presented to them. You realize how important these years are and want to place them in an enriching educational environment. What’s exceptional about Tower Hill is that the teachers really get to know their students. A strong partnership between faculty, students and parents fosters an ideal environment for children to grow and reach their full potential. We’ve always felt that Tower Hill has provided an excellent foundation for life—one of the greatest gifts we could ever give our children. When we give to the Annual Fund, we know we’re helping support Tower Hill’s outstanding faculty and rewarding curriculum. More importantly, we’re reinforcing our commitment to the value of education for our children and for other Tower Hill families.

he Class of 2006 responded to the Trustees’ annual “Senior Challenge,” which introduced the senior class to the concept of giving back to Tower Hill in a meaningful way. This class was the first to raise over $1,000. When asked what they would like to give to, their unanimous response was financial aid. With a Trustee Match of 5:1, their gift of $1,000 took on greater significance in terms of the financial assistance that could be provided. A third of the Class of 2006 gathered at Tower Hill during their 2007 Thanksgiving break to see each other and to see their bricks—the first ones laid in Senior Walk. They have proudly started a new tradition at Tower Hill and made a challenge to all the classes that follow them. “Beat our goal, help other students afford a Tower Hill education, and fill the bricks on Senior Walk with the names of students in all Tower Hill classes from here on!” The class of ’08 has already started planning their fund raising effort to do just that!

he best part of Tower Hill is the faculty. The teachers are passionate about their courses and are committed to helping me reach my potential. They’ve taught me to work hard and persevere, and I am confident that I will be well prepared for college. This past year, I have worked with several Tower Hill students to develop a leadership/service program that we hope will grow into a cooperative effort including independent, public and charter schools throughout the state. My parents chose Tower Hill because they wanted us to have a clear, consistent message that education was a top priority. Everybody I go to school with shares this priority.

Class of 1957 Gift Five years ago at their 45th reunion, the class of 1957 voted to make a substantial gift to Tower Hill School in recognition of their 50th reunion in 2007. Not since graduation, when they donated a plaque in memory of Jimmy Lee, had they made a gift as a class. A goal of $50,000 was set; gifts and pledges were to be accepted over a five-year period; and the funds were to be used to establish an endowed fund with income supporting financial aid awards for students enrolled in Tower Hill. On October 27, 2007, Rev. Richard Ullman was proud to report at the class reunion reception that the class had exceeded their goal by over $3,000, thanks to the generosity of 40 donors, representing 98% of the classmates. On behalf of the class, he presented the Tower Hill School Class of 1957 Financial Aid Fund, with the following dedication:

Established by the Tower Hill Class of 1957 in celebration of their 50-year reunion in 2007, in order to provide, annually and in perpetuity, a financial aid award to a Tower Hill student (or students) as a sign of our gratitude for the fine education, the friendships and other deep gifts we received at Tower Hill School near the start of our life’s journey.

Alumnus, Class Agent, Parent and Grandparent Whatever the amount, every gift to Tower Hill School is crucial and necessary for our success. This year, the class of ’47 decided to honor their long time class agent John Edinger who passed away in May 2007 by delivering 100% class participation for Tower Hill’s Annual Fund. John worked tirelessly over the years as a class agent and reunion chair. Carolyn Thelander Gittleson, who worked on this year’s 60th reunion for the class, has these memories of John. “I had only senior year with the class of ’47 and so never knew John as a classmate, but it did not take long to ‘know’ John later on. Working with him on the 50th reunion, seeing his quiet efficiency, his enthusiasm for his school, his dedication to the class, his hospitality alumni annual fund–special recognition in gathering us in his home, his unwavering Highest Percent Participation (for classes with 10 or more members) efforts to nudge us with quick handwritten notes on the fundraising letters to be sure Year Class Agent Participation 1947 John S. Income from these funds provides for faculty salaries, financial aid and the enrichment of the overall educational program. Financial Aid David C. Altrock Memorial Fund Established in 2000 with a bequest from Joan Roberts Altrock, this endowed fund was given in memory of her husband, David C. Altrock, class of 1942. Each year, income from the fund is used to award financial aid to students attending Tower Hill School. Alumni Association Financial Aid Fund Established in 1996 by the Alumni Association with proceeds from Tower Hill’s annual golf outing, this endowed fund honors all alumni and alumnae whose financial support to the school plays such an instrumental role. Anonymous Haon Fund Established and endowed in 1991 by Anne Haon Cook ’47 and Harry J. Haon III ’52 in memory of their father Harry J. Haon, Jr., Tower Hill Trustee, 1943-1955. For the Haon Art Award. Home & School Faculty Development Fund Established and endowed in 2004 by the Tower Hill Home & School Association. Annual income is used to provide professional opportunities for faculty. Hughes Fund Established and endowed in 1992 in honor of P. Edward Hughes, Tower Hill faculty, 1958-1992, by his children. For the Hughes History Award. Gretchen Hupfel Art Fund Established and endowed in 2004 in memory of Gretchen Hupfel, class of 1982, by family, classmates, and friends. Annual income is used for the acquisition of art for Tower Hill School’s permanent collection and to support lectures held in conjunction with art purchases. Library Book Endowment fund Established in 2003 by the Trustees, the Fund offers an opportunity to honor or remember a special person or group. For the acquisition of new books in areas specified by the donors.

Rosenthal Modern Language Fund Established and endowed in 2003 by Ruth Ganister and Tony Rosenthal in recognition of the Tower Hill education received by their son, David J. Rosenthal, class of 2003. Rowland Historic Preservation Award Endowed Fund Awards a seventh grader who writes the best essay on the subject: “Why Historic Preservation is important to me and my community.” The winning student receives a prize certificate and a $100.00 gift certificate for the purchase of books. He or she also reads the essay at the Middle School Awards Assembly. An additional $400.00 is donated to the Middle School history department that may be used either to fund a visiting lecturer or to increase the library holdings in the history field. The award was established in 2000 with the endowed fund instituted in 2006. Tower Hill Forum Established and endowed in 1998 by the Rappolt family to honor Gabrielle ’93, Sarah ’96, and Bill ’99 and in recognition of the dedication, scholarship and professionalism of the Tower Hill faculty. Annual income is used to bring experts and scholars to Tower Hill to speak to students about themes related to history, citizenship and international affairs. We received a letter about the Campaign in September from Konrad Schuermann ’59, exchange student in 1958-59, who currently resides in Switzerland. Following is an excerpt:

When—it must have been about a year ago—I first read of Tower Hill’s Campaign for Athletics to raise 12 million dollars to ‘transform all of the athletic facilities’ I said to myself: now they’ve really gone over the top. How could such an extravagant idea be realized? And who on earth would contribute significant funds to such an overblown project? And there I let matters rest—until some weeks ago, when I received the brochure of the Tower Hill School Athletics Facilities Master Plan together with the “Dear Konrad” letter of the Alumni Advisory Committee. […] But when I read both the brochure and the letter I got stuck on the Tower Hill motto—multa bene facta—and I began reminiscing about my year at Tower Hill, about how Tower Hill had given life to this motto, and how I myself have profited from multa bene facta. [football under DeGroat and Hughes…academic school work…art class…band practice…a one-act play…piano lessons…the track team with Mr. Oviatt] At home it would have been unthinkable that a teacher of ‘serious’ subjects (German, History, Mathematics…) would also act as a coach. […] Now, what made me change my opinion about the appropriateness of spending so much money on athletic facilities and even contribute myself to this cause? Unlike many of my classmates I did not have the opportunity to send any of my four children (multa? yes, by today’s standards; bene facta? only time will tell) nor any of the presently two grandchildren to Tower Hill. Nor can I deduct anything from my taxes nor will anybody match my gift. But I am deeply thankful for having had the opportunity to partake in everything Tower Hill had to offer and finally realize that it is the simultaneous availability of academic, cultural, and athletic facilities that made (and will make for future generations) this experience possible. When I see the engagement of members of the Class of ’59 in the school’s affairs, I feel proud to be one of theirs and will make my contribution to the idea of ‘The Alumni Stadium Challenge.’ If Konrad could see Richardson and DeGroat fields right now, he would experience another level of why we are so excited about the Campaign—and hopefully he will when his class celebrates their 50th reunion in 2009!

Securities are perhaps the best form of assets to use in making a charitable gift. When ownership of a security—which may result in a capital gain if sold—is transferred to Tower Hill, you avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security. The day after Thanksgiving 2007, ten Tower Hill students and their three chaperones flew to Edinburgh, Scotland for the first exchange program conducted with Fettes College. Students experienced dorm life as they boarded in two of the “houses” on campus. In addition to attending classes at Fettes, students visited Edinburgh Castle, St. Andrews and Stirling Castle. Tower Hill will host their friends from Scotland in April 2008 when Fettes College visits the U.S.
