Dear Tower Hill Friends and Supporters, I am pleased to present Tower Hill School’s Annual Report for fiscal 2007-2008. Inside you will find facts and figures about the Tower Hill School community’s wonderful commitment to this extraordinary place. But before you dig in, I wanted to say thank you for the kind of support that can’t be quantified and without which we cannot survive: the gift of love for this enduring institution. In my four years at Tower Hill I have had many dozens of conversations with members of this community, including alumni, faculty, students, parents and friends, all of whom have expressed deep affection for their school. And despite changes in faculty, renovations of physical plant, and the passage of time, an abiding dedication to the special nature of this place wins out every time. Tower Hill could not possibly be so strong without this, and I am grateful to each of you for your commitment to the school. This report arrives at a time of national economic crisis. To some degree, each of us has been affected by this challenging time. While we certainly have to be mindful of the current conditions, we have not allowed them to distract us from our central purpose: to provide the best possible education for our students as we emphasize our core values of honesty, respect and responsibility. As we mark our 90th anniversary, we are pleased to report that that Tower Hill School is in sound fiscal shape. Over the past five years, the Annual Fund has received over $3 million. Annual Fund receipts for 2007-2008 were $662,840, on par with the prior year. These generous contributions from the Tower Hill community go directly to the operating budget and helped us maintain our facilities, support our faculty and provide a world-class education for our students. Here are several significant highlights of the Annual Fund for the year that will interest you: • 25% of alumni contributed nearly 50% of the overall funds received • Special contributions made by the Class of 1957 and 1982 (see page 27) helped to bring in the largest reunion giving in the history of the school • Parent participation was up 21% over the prior year • 100% of the Class of 2008 participated in the Trustees Challenge—their first gift to the school before transitioning to alumni! The Campaign for Athletics has come close to meeting the $12 million goal, providing resources to complete the athletic field complex between Carpenter Field House and Pennsylvania Avenue. With the gift from Frank E. Acierno, Sr., a current Tower Hill grandparent, we are now closer to bringing our five-year athletic campaign to a close this spring, ahead of schedule. We will proceed with the final phase of the campaign by renovating Carpenter Field House beginning in March. We expect to open the renovated facility by March of 2010. On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, I would again like to thank the generous Tower Hill community of alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty and friends for your continued support. Tower Hill is fortunate to receive gifts to endowed funds each year and they are vital in keeping the budget in balance and maintaining the school’s quality and breadth of program. Alumni Association Financial Aid Fund Established in 1996 by the Alumni Association with proceeds from Tower Hill’s annual golf outing, this endowed fund honors all alumni and alumnae whose financial support to the school plays such an instrumental role. Marvin Diversity Financial Aid Fund This endowment was established in 2002 with an initial gift from Margaret Aspril Boyer, Class of 1933, to promote ethnic diversity among students. The William W. and Mary Y. Beck Memorial Fund This endowment was established in 2005 by William W. Beck. Jr. ’57, Laurence H. Beck ’58 and Sally Beck Baker ’62 in honor of their parents, William and Mary Beck. The proceeds of this fund are used to award, annually, need-based financial aid to one or more Tower Hill students enrolled in Prekindergarten through Grade 12.

Annual income is used for the acquisition of art for Tower Hill School’s permanent collection and to support lectures held in conjunction with art purchases. Ms. Alice B. Hupfel Jennings Fund Established and endowed in 1990 in memory of Lorie S. Jennings, mother of Elizabeth ’97 and Pam ’01. For Lower School activities and programs. Library Book Endowment Fund Established in 2003 by the Trustees, the Fund offers an opportunity to honor or remember a special person or group. For the acquisition of new books in an area specified by the donors. Rosenthal Modern Language Fund Established and endowed in 2003 by Ruth Ganister and Tony Rosenthal in recognition of the Tower Hill education received by their son, David J. Rosenthal, Class of 2003. For the acquisition of materials, other than textbooks, to aid in the teaching of modern languages. The Walter S. and Beverley W. Rowland Historic Preservation Award Endowed Fund Awards a seventh grader who writes the best essay on the subject: “Why Historic Preservation is important to me and my community.” The winning student receives a prize certificate and a $100 gift certificate for the purchase of books. Middle School History Department that may be used either to fund a visiting lecturer or to increase the library holdings in the history field. The award was established in 2000 with the endowed fund instituted in 2006. Tower Hill Forum Established and endowed in 1998 by the Rappolt family to honor Gabrielle ’93, Sarah ’96 and Bill ’99 and in recognition of the dedication, scholarship and professionalism of the Tower Hill faculty. Annual income is used to bring experts and scholars to Tower Hill to speak to students about themes related to history, citizenship and international affairs. Unrestricted Endowment Income from Tower Hill’s unrestricted endowment fund is used each year to help support operating expenses. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Fritsky Professor Crawford H. The fund is given in gratitude for Tower Hill’s nurturing us all to read for both learning and pleasure. Income from named and endowed funds is generated annually and in perpetuity. Reunion Giving Class of 1957 Gift

Five years ago at their 45th reunion, the class of 1957 voted to make a substantial gift to Tower Hill School in recognition of their 50th reunion in 2007. Not since graduation, when they donated a plaque in memory of Jimmy Lee, had they made a gift as a class. A goal of $50,000 was set; gifts and pledges were to be accepted over a five-year period; and the funds were to be used to establish an endowed fund with income supporting financial aid awards for students enrolled in Tower Hill.

Established by the Tower Hill Class of 1957 in celebration of their 50year reunion in 2007, in order to provide, annually and in perpetuity, a financial aid award to a Tower Hill student (or students) as a sign of our gratitude for the fine education, the friendships and other deep gifts we received at Tower Hill School near the start of our life’s journey.

Class of 1982 Gift

For the Class of ’82, our 25th year reunion coincided with a strong push by Tower Hill to raise funds for the Campaign for Athletics. In the months preceding the reunion, a few of us met to discuss our 25th year reunion class gift. We had an exceptionally strong class at Tower Hill and felt that we could do something special. We realized that several members of our class had already made a significant contribution to the campaign. Also, we knew that none of these gifts had been designated towards a commemorative gift. After a few phone calls and e-mails, we came up with a plan, for which I would like to credit Lesley Abrams Nicholson. Lesley pointed out that if our classmates who had already made donations designated their gifts to the Class of ’82, we could claim the bridge crossing Pennsylvania Avenue for $75,000 as our class reunion gift. Furthermore, if we could raise another $25,000 from our classmates who had not yet donated, we could claim an even $100,000 contribution to the Campaign for Athletics from our class.

We sent out an e-mail to our entire class and the support came rolling in. Things went down to the last day; however, on the eve of homecoming, our class had raised $100,000 for our school.

Securities are another form of asset to use in making a contribution to Tower Hill. When ownership of a security—which would result in a capital gain, if sold--is transferred to Tower Hill, one can avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security. Planned Giving Planned or deferred gifts are a wonderful way to contribute to Tower Hill School.
