Our Mission Founded in 1919 Tower Hill School is a co-educational, non-denominational school, Pre-school through Grade 12, dedicated to its motto Multa Bene Facta -- Many Things Done Well. Tower Hill provides an enriched and challenging college preparatory program in which each student’s abilities and talents are recognized and respected. Message from the Headmaster Dear Tower Hill Friends and Supporters, It gives me great pleasure to thank all of you for your generosity to Tower Hill School during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. This report primarily recognizes the support to our Annual Fund, which is the cornerstone for giving at Tower Hill. Unrestricted annual support is a critical component of our annual budget, and gifts of every size address fundamental operating needs. Your support helps us sustain and enhance the overall environment – the people, the facilities, the programs and of course, the wonderful sense of place – that creates the singular Tower Hill experience.
With your help, we have made tremendous progress. Your support and the support of everyone listed in this report have been essential to everything we do. We are deeply grateful for your faith in Tower Hill. Your contributions to the 2008-2009 Annual Fund ensured student and faculty access to: • • • • • •
Up-to-date equipment for science labs, music and theater productions Varied and high quality literature in the division libraries Educational supplies and materials for special projects Technology programs to enhance computer literacy Modern classrooms Safe and well-maintained grounds for athletic, recreation and educational experience.
The list goes on, but each item on this list supports Tower Hill’s philosophy of Many Things Done Well. Thank you for helping us in our ongoing pursuit of excellence!
In addition to the Annual Fund, this report also acknowledges gifts for special purposes, restricted gifts and matching gifts from corporations. Finally, we recognize the contributions to the Campaign for Athletics, which over the past several years helped us meet our $12 million goal and transform the athletic/physical education facilities of our campus. Undoubtedly the economic downturn made this an exceptionally challenging year in financial terms for every sector in American society. None has been immune to the impact, including Tower Hill. As a result we have taken important steps to tighten our cost structure without impacting educational programs and the excellence that defines Tower Hill today. Notwithstanding the financial challenges of the past year, we continue to celebrate significant accomplishments in all areas of the school, including a higher student enrollment this year and a sustained and renewed commitment to student financial aid. I would again like to express my gratitude to our generous alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty/staff and friends for their commitment and support in this unprecedented year. Planned Giving Planned or deferred gifts are a wonderful way to contribute to Tower Hill School. Such gifts can be made with cash, but many planned gifts can provide valuable tax benefits and/or lifetime income for the giver. The most popular planned gifts are bequests, made through an individual’s will. Other popular planned gifts include charitable trusts and charitable gift annuities. Class of 1958 50th Reunion Class Gift Although members of the Class of 1958’s Committee for its 50th reunion were scattered nationally and internationally, they were able to communicate via email about years of shared experiences and to gather their classmates for a wonderful weekend of reconnection with one another and with Tower Hill School. In addition to the usual dinners and school tours, ’58 organized a lunch and tour at the Delaware Art Museum, adding a nice cultural touch to their Homecoming weekend. Reunionyear funds for a special gift to the school were initiated by Julie Johnson Lindquist who informed her classmates of her intention to become a Tower Hill Fellow though a leadership pledge. As others from the class soon followed with their contributions, the Development Office realized that the Class of ’58 could take advantage of a matching gift challenge from the Benedict Foundation to raise $20,000 for Smartboard technology. Class agent and reunion committee member Larry Beck followed up Julie’s letter with one of his own, and at the school-sponsored 50th Reunion dinner at the Wilmington Country Club, explained the extraordinary opportunity for the class to bring in this sizable gift to the students and teachers. In all, the Benedict Foundation matching grant and the monies raised by the Class of 1958 enabled a gift of over $40,000 to spend on state-of-the-art technology for Tower Hill.
Weighing in from England and always a strong voice on the Reunion Committee, Sarah Worthington Greening suggested that the class use the remainder of the funds to purchase two copies of the Frank E. Schoonover Catalogue Raisonné, to be published the following spring. Schoonover (1877 – 1972), an American illustrator and member of the what became known as the Brandywine School, studied under Howard Pyle and helped to organize what is now the Delaware Art Museum and enable its acquisition of Pyle works. Fibbie Schoonover Smith ‘59 stopped by the Alumni House this fall to sign the copies, which have been placed in the Lower School Library and the Alumni House Reading Room. The Smartboards were installed this summer in the Upper School History, Math, and Music classrooms, and

Named and Endowed Funds Tower Hill is fortunate to receive gifts to endowed funds each year and they are vital in keeping the budget in balance and maintaining the school’s quality and breadth of program. Tower Hill is most appreciative to the generous donors who have established these funds and to those who continue to contribute to them. Please note that gifts to endowed funds cannot be credited to the Annual Fund or other capital programs and are restricted for the purposes noted. Financial Aid David C. Altrock Memorial Fund
Established in 2000 with a bequest from Joan Roberts Altrock, this endowed fund was given in memory of her husband, David C. Altrock, Class of 1942. Each year, income from the fund is used to award financial aid to students attending Tower Hill School.

Established in 1996 by the Alumni Association with proceeds from Tower Hill’s annual golf outing, this endowed fund honors all alumni and alumnae whose financial support to the school plays such an instrumental role. John Buonocore III Memorial Financial Aid Award This endowment was established in 2004 in memory of John Buonocore III, Class of 1983, with gifts from family and classmates. Established in 1990 with an initial gift from Mrs. George A. Hyde, this endowed fund honors all members of the Hyde family who attended Tower Hill School. Annual income supports one or more financial aid awards for students enrolled in Grades 7 through12.

Spiller Financial Aid Fund
Gifts to Tower Hill School in memory of Paul and Judy Spiller and their sons Harvey and David were used to establish this endowed fund in 1989. Each year, an award is made to a Lower School boy or girl deemed especially noteworthy as a school citizen and student.
James W. Straub Financial Aid Fund
Established and endowed in 2005 with gifts to Tower Hill School in memory of James W. Straub, Class of 1962, and Tower Hill Faculty, 1989-2005. Income will be awarded, annually, by members of the Faculty Fund to Aid Students to a male athlete in the Upper School. The Straub Basketball Group

Class of 1956 Lower School Library Fund
The fund has been established by Tower Hill’s Class of 1956 in celebration of their 50th reunion in 2006. Support from it, provided annually and in perpetuity, will enable the lower school library to buy books and audio/visual supplies. Established and endowed in 1991 by Anne Haon Cook ‘47 and Harry J. Haon III ‘52 in memory of their father Harry J. Haon, Jr., Tower Hill trustee, 1943-1955. For the Haon Art Award.
Home & School Faculty Development Fund
Established and endowed in 2004 by the Tower Hill Home & School Association. Annual income is used to provide professional opportunities for faculty.
Jennings Fund
Established and endowed in 1990 in memory of Lorie S. Jennings, mother of Elizabeth ‘97 and Pam ‘01. For Lower School activities and programs.
Library Book Endowment Fund
Established in 2003 by the Trustees, the Fund offers an opportunity to honor or remember a special person or group. For the acquisition of new books in an area specified by the donors.
Rosenthal Modern Language Fund
Established and endowed in 2003 by Ruth Ganister and Tony Rosenthal in recognition of the Tower Hill education received by their son, David J. Rosenthal, Class of 2003. For the acquisition of materials, other than textbooks, to aid in the teaching of modern languages.
The Walter S. and Beverley W. Rowland Historic Preservation Award Endowed Fund
Awards a seventh grader who writes the best essay on the subject: “Why Historic Preservation is important to me and my community.” The winning student received a prize certificate and a $100.00 gift certificate for the purchase of books. He or she also reads the essay at the Middle School Awards Assembly. An additional $400.00 is donated to the Middle School history department that may be used either to fund a visiting lecturer or to increase the library holdings in the history field. The award was established in 2000 with the endowed fund instituted in 2006.
Tower Hill Forum Hughes Fund
Established and endowed in 1992 in honor of P. Edward Hughes, Tower Hill faculty, 1958-1992, by his children. For the Hughes History Award. Dr. Michael Cohen
Gretchen Hupfel Art Fund
Established and endowed in 2004 in memory of Gretchen Hupfel, Class of 1982, by family, classmates, and friends. Annual income is used for the acquisition of art for Tower Hill School’s permanent collection and to support lectures held in conjunction with art purchases.
Established and endowed in 1998 by the Rappolt family to honor Gabrielle ‘93, Sarah ‘96, and Bill ‘99 and in recognition of the dedication, scholarship and professionalism of the Tower Hill faculty. Annual income is used to bring experts and scholars to Tower Hill to speak to students about themes related to history, citizenship and international affairs.
Unrestricted Endowment

Securities are another form of asset to use in making a contribution to Tower Hill. When ownership of a security—which would result in a capital gain, if sold—is transferred to Tower Hill, one can avoid substantial capital gains taxes and receive a charitable gift tax deduction for the fair market value of the security. Dear Members of the Tower Hill Community, Thank you to everyone who donated to the 2008-2009 Tower Hill School Annual Fund. Every student, teacher, program and division benefit from the Annual Fund. The previous pages of donor lists represent the generous alumni, parents, grandparents and friends who place great value on a Tower Hill education. It is through these unrestricted gifts that the school can provide the critical resources for financial assistance, faculty/staff salaries, the most urgent needs in the operating budget and so much more. Thank you also to our Annual Fund volunteers – parent grade captains and alumni class agents – whose commitment and energy to our fund raising efforts have been a vital component of our successful annual campaign. These volunteers were instrumental in encouraging participation in the Annual Fund, reinforcing that every gift, no matter the size, can collectively make a lasting impact. When alumni support the Annual Fund, they are taking an active role in the life of the school, and their gifts make an immediate and lasting difference on the lives of today’s students. When parents and grandparents donate to the Annual Fund, their support enhances the educational experience of the current students, directly benefitting their children and grandchildren.
