A suitabl e definition of Philosophy read s that "it is a science of all things in their ultimate causes."
It would seem th at th e present day trend in general education is the stud y of a ll things, since every subject is now included in some curri culums, but littl e attenti on is paid to the ultimate causes ; the b e~ innin g, the objecti ves of knowledge, and its consequent rc~ p o ns ibilit y . Th erefore, with rncouragem<"nt do we look to the development of Loyola University and kindred edu ca tional centers. As you persevere in th e prese rvation of the fundamentals of knowledge, we ask Cod's choicest bl essings upon you and your efforts. With sincere best wi shes, 1 am Faithfully in Chri st,

of
our dedication
The Ignation Year, 1956, was for Loyola a time of great happenings. Plans for the Cniversity's growth and development on aJl levels were made. The Administration announced that a Student Union would be constructed, and a Library and dormitory building in addition. The Students revi sed their constitution. The Ignation celebration brought Southland Jesuit alumni from all parts of the world together at the University for the Communion-Breakfast. There was a Freedom March for the courageous people of Hungary.
And while these things were happening someone dropped quietly from our midst. He was the man who, more than any other, had been responsible for these things, for it was he who had built Loyola into the community that we know today. He was Lorenzo Malone, S..J.
On the wind-swept, dusty bluffs of Del Rey, Fath er Malone watched and spurred the growth of Loyola to keep pace with the sprawling giant of a metropoli s at it s fe et. He found ed the Roaring Lions, later the llill Foundation, which brought together alumni from as far back a thr
I.
\ "incent's days on " thr old
Garvanza line", in a conce rted effort to keep th e lnivrrsity afloat and a pace with th e tim es.
When Fa ther Malone first came to Loyola, on ly th e Administrati on Building and St. Robert's Hall were built. Today five other buildings- the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, the Memorial Gymnasium, Pereira Hall of Engineering, Sulli van and Huesman Halls- are lasting memorials to hi s work. But, strangely enough, it is not for th ese great memorial s that Lorenzo Malone will be most remembered. It is not for these that future Loyolans will hea r his name spoken with awe. It will be for the spirit, the simpli city and fortitud e with whi ch he carried on the work of his General, Ignatius of Loyola.
As Ignatius saw education as the means of uplifting man to God, so Lorenzo Malone saw the need for the rudiments of education. As Ignatius saw a mankind upraised to receive the Great Benediction, so Lorenzo Malone saw the constant improvement and perfection of this step in that over-all plan; Loyola.
Thus, it is with pride and humility that we dedicate this, our Annual, to Lorenzo Malone of the Society of Jesus. To a benefactor who was also a fri end, to a priest of God and a builder of men: may our work reflect yours, and rna y our pages be as murmured prayers for your eternal rest and happiness! And may you sometimes smil e on us, Loyola's sons, as we shall

father president At the end of this academic yea r Loyola U ni versity will , as usual , confer degrees upon those whose have com pleted the prescribed work in the arts and sciences, business adm ini stra ti on, engineering, or la w. Certainly we cong ra tul a te our g ra dua tes, but only because they have successfu ll y fu lfilled the req uirements fo r g ra du ati on. W e do not cong ratulate them on the gro und tha t thei r educati on is now complete, beca use it is not, or a t least should not be.
A coll ege education which leaves a man with no a mbiti on for f urthe r lea rning o r with no desire to adva nce save in hi s own narrow occupation is a fa ilure, even th ough it is marked wi th a11 th e tra ppings of cap a nd gown and d iploma. Such a n ed uca tion stunts a man by closing r a ther th a n opening the mind to the l imitless ho rizons of learn ing, by robbing the creature of much of the r ichness of God's creati on . We ea rnestl y hope th at Loyola's g r adua tes of thi s a nd every year have not so much completed as but begun th eir education in its fu llest a nd best sense.

REV. ROBERT GRAHAM, S.J. Director of Alumni R elations
MR. JESSE RAY BROWN, JR. Executive Secretary of Loyola University Alumni Association
Message to the Graduates : The com pleti on of deg ree at Loyola University ma rks th e grad uati on to, or co mmencement of, a new phase in th e relationship between the individual and the school. lL is not by accident that the administrative staff, th e fa culty, the students, the alumni, the parents, and benefa ctors are known as the Loyola Family. A famil y is a natural type of society made up of parents and offspring. It is th e unit God designed to transmit the Faith and our cultural heritage 路to th e nex t generation. There is stability in such a g roup - a uniting of h.earts and effort s to obtain a common goal by collective action. He re at Loyola is a supplementary family made up of many famili es.
68
It is th eir keen interest, glowing enthusiasm, and vital parti cipation in th e effort to provide a sound Christian educati on for thi s and coming generations that binds them together with th e unity of a common goal and co mmunit y of effort. The a lumni congratulates th e seniors upon th e success[ ul completion of part of their. job, and welcomes th em sincerely into th e nex t phase of their effort s to parti cipate as a member of the Loyola famil y. In proportion to their effort s to participa~e in the work of the Loyola University Family will th ey draw clown the bl essings that accompany such a sincere desire to do God's work here on ea rth.

The basketball season of 1956-1957 brought to a close the playing careers of five of the fin est boys that have ever represented Loyola U. We shall misf' Dav<路 Bcnadcret, Carnell e Brown, Chuck Kovely, Bill McMahon and Norm Diehl, and do certainly wish them all the success in their future endeavors. The sca$on itself marked our second year in th e California Basketball Af'sociation, and although it was not as successfu l a yea r as we had hoped it would be, nevertheless it was not without its bright spots. Our fine showing against USC and our wins over St. Mary's and Santa Clara were indeed fine performances. The trip to Hawaii will always be remembered by the team as the high spot in their four years at Loyola. Therefore, in look ing back at this season, we are forced to say that we had thought we would have a more impressive won and lost record, but we wou ld be rem iss if we did not exp ress ou r feeli ngs that we enjoyed working with thi s g roup and th at with all things being considered it was a successfu l rep resentati ve of Loyola University.

Loyola's 1956-57 basketball season was one of only moderate success as far as seasonal statistics are concerned. The Lions finished th eir second year in th e California Basketball Association with a 5-9 record and an overall season record of 11-14. Newcome rs to the Loyola varsi ty gained a great deal of expe ri ence, especially on th e Hawaii trip and ea rly season games. Hi ghlighting the season we re victories over San ta Clara (58-57) and Saint Mary's (64--59). As usual th e season had its heartbreaking moments as th e Lions were edged by U.S.C. (59-60) in the last 3 seconds and the 5 ove rtime Joss to Fresno State (90-92).

Th e real story of the Loyola 1956-57 basketball season was the wa y in which Garnette Brown re-wrote the Lion reco rd book . Brown scored 558 po ints this season, to break the on e season a ll-time scoring mark of 530, held previously by coach Bill Donavon. Brown's sco ring average was 20.6, which broke Bob Cox's previous hi gh of 17.7. Th en Brown went on to break every free throw record Loyola had. Most attempts one season- 256; M ost made one season-186; Most attempts one game-20; and most made one game- 16. Jn seasons accuracy, Brown set the alltime field goal percentage figure at 49ro . In Cali fornia Basketball Association play Brown established a new league mark with 120 free throws made during CBA pla y. Brown was accorded many honors during the season, which we re capped by the receipt of two awards at the end of the campaign. He was named to the first string All-CBA team selected by the coaches. The Los Angeles Sports路 writers nam ed Brown to the All-Southern Cali fornia team by a unanimous choice of 8 1 out of a possible 8] votes. This vote made Brown th e most valuable pla yer of the area .

. . . At l :00 PM on Friday, November 7, 1956 the March began ... Cars and trucks moved out from Loyola ... The March formed in Pershing Square, where Loyola was joined by students from other colleges ... 1000 students marched in complete silence through the hot streets of downtown Los Angdes .. . Led by the Aags of America and Hungary, they carried placards and wore black armbands in memory of the Hungarian dead . . .

... At the City Hall steps, Mayor Poulson came out to meet the students ... He congratulated them on their silent march for freedom ... Tom McDonald presented the Mayor with a resolution asking for a barrage of letters to government and U. N. officials supporting the Hungarian Revolt ... Then the students silently dispersed ... The Freedom March stands as a lasting tribute to the efforts of Loyola students, faculty and administration . . . No one student or group of students was responsible for its success ...
the boards: Following the Freedom March, a more unhappy finish was written for another Loyola project ... The awaited Varsity Show was still-born ... Written by Matt Goldbach and Tom McDonald, it was to be produced by Don Eitner and to be directed by Rift Fournier ... Tryouts were held, a staff was obtained, and sets were designed ... However the watchwords of the Girls Colleges seemed to be "Immorality and Intelligence" .. . The show had beer in one scene (immoral) and was "too intelligent for college students" ... Thus it died a-bornin' . . .
