Loyola University is located fifteen miles from the hea rt of metropolitan Los Angeles on the Del Rey Hills. From here it commands a beauli ful panorama of the Los Angeles Valley from the Santa Monica Moun tain~ to the Sea. Founded in 1911 by the J esuit Fa thers. Loyola was established as a Cath olic University for the r ducation of thr Christian gentleman. To carry out this aim, the J esuits hove four hundred years of Leaching expc路 ricnce Lo draw from. First and foremost, as at an y university, the Loyolan is a student -

person in the pursuit of academic knowledge. This permit takes the student lo the classrooms, the labora tor y, the library, and, at limes keeps him working far into the night.

In the classroom he is introduced to ideas. both old and new. that will assi:;L him 111

understanding the world mon â&#x20AC;˘ completely. lie can supplement th rse ideas with

resea rch in the library, and l<'arn to analyze th<'m himself. A confused student can turn to his dean or the Guidance C<'ntr r to help him to take full advantage of the carefull y scl<'cted cou r::es of s tud y available at Loyola. The Loyolan can add to the idras lea rned in the classrooms and seminars with outside reading or work that is related to his maj or. s uch as writing or drafting. In short, the Loyolan has every chance to develop the concrpts that he has come in contact with in the classroom.

T he work in the classrooms, the library, and the laboratory does not complete the process of learning. Available at Loyola are extra-curricular and co-curricular activities to suit every student's interests. Professional societies, such as Delta Sigma Pi , the Pre-Legal Society, and the Society of Automotive Engi路 neers, are maintained to augment the work in the classrooms and to preview the type of work the student will be engaged in after graduati on. Functional organizations, such as the Loyolan and the Student Legislature are fostered by the students interested in writing and practicing law.

Social groups are organized by students to break the r outine of school work and gain experience in associating with other people. Each of these groups and societies give the Loyolan a chance to round out his education and become a more complete man, a wise man. Along with a mnn's mind and social habits, Loyola University intends to develop the physical aspects. The sports program at Loyola does this. For those who cxcell, there are Inter-Collegiate teams in basketball, rugby, baseball, golf, and others. For others interested in pa rticipating in sports, a complete intramural program is encouraged by the University. Ma ny students spend their noon-hour either participating in or watching the exciting games that take place on the intramural fi elds.

organized activities are the student's leisure h ours. He can go to the Lair and discuss Saturday's game, relig ion, politics, the next dance, or whatever over a hamburger and ma lt. He can play a little footba ll, shoot some pool, or just goof around with his b udd ies. Odd as it may seem, these peaceful h ours a re the ones longest remembered .

He can go into the Pr<'sident's Lounge and sit and read o r sleep. li e can walk a round the ca mpus. brealhl' fresh sa iL air. and d ear his mind. Life at Loyola is a complex thing. as all life 1s. Faculty, students, staff, all are parts of it~ just as are academic programs, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities. Academic programs differ; so do activities. It is difficult, then. to give a simple description of life at Loyola. If one seeks a description in terms of immediate goals, immediate goals differ. What pervades the broad spectrum of persons and activities and gives a characteristic spirit is the ultimate goal of Loyola, so familiarly expressed in "The Complete Man" and "The Citizen of Two Worlds." Just in so far as these ideas animate Loyola men and activities is there a gen uine Loyola life. How much this is the case is not easy to measure. We can but work and pray that with each succeeding generation of the students life at Loyola becomes fuller and fuller in the best sense.

A BALANCED LIFE OF STUDY, WORK, AND PLAY The National Interfraternity Conference opens its Fraternity Criteria with the words: "We consider the fraternity responsible for a positive contribution to the primary functions of the colleges and universities, and therefore under an obligation to encourage the most complete personal development of the members, intellectual, physical, and social." Delta Sigma Phi recognizes these obligations and, in 1953, the ENGINEERED LEADERSHIP program was introduced. What is this "engineered leadership"? It is more than a program or system, it is our way of thinking, our philosophy of life itself. Delta Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Phi on the Loyola campus is proud to play an important role in University fun ctions, proud of their engineered leadership, proud to be producing the "man of two worlds."

T he House gets a revampin g

Phi Kappa Theta is a National Social Fraternity for Catholic men, founded in 1889 at the Universities of Brown dnd Lehigh. Loyola's ALPHA NU Chapter was chartered in 1956 by Phi Kappa Fraternity. On April 9, Phi Kappa merged with Theta Kappa Phi to form the new organization of Phi Kappa Theta, the largest and strongest National Catholic Fraternity in the United States. Members are provided with every opportunity to develop themselves socially, spiritually, academically, and a thletically through a medium of true brotherhood. In its relatively short history, Alpha Nu Chapter has received a number of coveted trophies from its participation in Homecoming, Spring Sing, and intramural activities. The fraternity was also recently honored with the Best Chapter Award from the National Office. Phi Kaps are noted for their service projects-both on and off campus. Some other highlights on the social calendar include the International Festival Ball, Founder's Day Dinner, Mother's Club sponsored Christmas Party, and famous snow trip. Phi Kaps also have a full schedule of exchanges, pre-dance parties, and similar extravaganzas. In addition to attending monthly Mass in a body, Alpha Nu is proud of its annual Family Mass and Communion. Phi Kaps play an integral part in the University's intramural system- fielding two teams in each sport. Alpha Nu also has a get-together each spring with neighboring Alpha Iota Chapter in Arizona. This weekend is filled with social and athletic evrnts. The mot路 to of the Phi Kapps is "LOYALTY TO GOD AND COLLEGE."

DENNIS RILEY During our four yea r tenure at Loyola University, we have had millions of words, attended hundreds of classes, crammed for many exams, and, h opefull y, leamed a few things. When we leave Loyola, we must take with us more than a parchment called a diploma. We must take with us a Catholic education. It is fitting tha t the first thing we see when we drive down Loyola Boulevard is the Sacred Heart Chapel. The height and impressiveness of its tower consta ntly remind us of its presence. But it is more than just a stately building . It is a manifestation of Loyola's aims a nd ends. It is the nexus that unites the world of d ifferential equations with that of public administration, economics, philosophy- it is "ad Maj orem Dei Gloriam."

If we think of our diploma as a key to ri ches and wealth, we are n ot only misguided, but we will soon be disappointed. If we fail to p ermeate our education and life goals with the basic tenets of good Christian living, our life a t Loyola will have been for naught. This is what makes Loyola uniq ue in Southern Ca lifo rnia. Not only will we re ceive a superior higher education at Loyola, we will receive a Catholic education. To g rasp this and incorporate it into our " modus vivendi," is to h ave been a success a t Loyola. Success when we get off " the hill' is not s imply concentration on one's own ad vancement, but it is an interdependence with our fellow man in which we will unite, working for our parish church, being active in the Alumni Association, being informed about national and international issues, striving to be a "complete man." Four years, a certain number of units, a piece of paper , or a cap and gown cannot make us a "Citizen of Two Worlds." T o take this takes d edication, devoti on, and discipline. Loyola has set us on the road. Our journey can end on the day of graduation. We can take the path of uniformed bliss, thankful to leave the world of retreats, Thomism, and the noon day Angelus. If we take that course, we can become a citizen of on e world- our own private world in which no one else matters. Its capital will br selfishness and eventual boredom. The other harder route is known to us. W e have been given the road map for this j ourney with our underg raduate education. There is no ch oice for a Loyola man. May I wish success to you all.

The thief.

This year the Loyola Lions were a disappointment. They were picked to take top honors in WCAC competition but were thwarted in their eiTorls. After jumping ahead of the pack in the first few games. Loyola's momentum was checked by several one-point losses. These losses, coupled with the ba lance of tough competition among the other WCAC teams, ruined Loyola's hopes. The season was not a total loss, however. Brilliant individual eiTorts was the silver lining. Ed Bento set eight school reco rds and was the top NCAA scorer on the Pacific Coast with a 24 point average. J err y Grote set a school record by hitLing 82.2% o f his free throws. Even though it would have been a more fitting ending for the greatest basketball team in Loyola Un iversity's histor y to win the league, they are not graduating in disgrace. Over the past three years Loyolans have been treated to winning basketball, and for this we should be thankful. The Lair Annual salutes the causes for this treat on the following pages. Congratulations to seniors Ed Bento, J erry Grote, Bernie Bowler, Tony Kralhnan, and Omer Simeon.

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION: I commend you for the notable use you have made of your time and talent as you have prepared yourself during the past four years to accept the responsibility of business leadership. In the future, business will be judged on its role as a good neighbor rather than solely on its traditional task of providing a good product of a service at a low price. Business and businessmen will be responsible for dealing with customers, with employees, with government, and with peoples of other countries in such a manner as to promote the general welfare. Business decisions must be made m a framework set by the political, social, and ethical conventions and mores of a free society. At this critical juncture in time one cannot overstate the importance of this high objective, for at stake is more than the success of an individual enterprise; at stake is the survival of the philosophy of the free world. As business leaders it is your duty to help shape the future, for our ability to carry the struggle of our economy underlies to a great degree the factors that will determine the ultimate course of events. A most powerful way by which man affects the shape of tomorrow's world is by knowledge, by ideas, and by example. The business community must demonstrate that it is a good neighbor and that vigorous national growth and international amnity are compatible with maximum citizen's opportunity. In this way business will serve as a showcase of the clear purpose of the economic aspects of our society,-the improvement of the living standards in an environment which provides the satisfaction of living, thinking, working, and worshipping in freedom.
