2017 Waste Management Guide and Recycling Calendar aurora.ca/wasteandrecycling

Message from the Mayor I am pleased to present The Town of Aurora’s 2017 Waste Management Guide & Recycling Calendar. This guide contains important information about waste and recycling collection guidelines and reminders. On behalf of Aurora Town Council, I would like thank all our residents and businesses for supporting our waste diversion efforts. Your participation makes a positive difference in our community and environment.

We are continuing to see the trend of Aurora residents partaking in backyard composting. This practice transforms waste into new resources and helps to manage organic waste at home.

Broken/Damaged Bins...............................................9

I am delighted that the town has partnered with the Regional Municipality of York and Textile Waste Diversion to provide Aurora residents with a new, convenient option for re-purposing used clothing and textiles. Clean, dry materials that are gently used, worn or torn can be dropped off at collection bins in the following locations: Aurora Community Centre, Aurora Family Leisure Complex and the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. The goal is to provide a convenient way to keep these items out of landfills and save the environment. For more information, please visit aurora.ca/clothingrecycling.

Curbside Giveaway Days...........................................1

For more information about waste and recycling in Aurora, please visit the Town’s website at www.aurora.ca/wasteandrecycling or download our PingStreet and my-waste Apps, available for most Apple, Android and Blackberry devices.

For waste management inquiries, please call Access Aurora at 905-727-1375 or email info@aurora.ca Sincerely, Mayor Geoffrey Dawe

WINTER REMINDERS

• Place waste bins in a visible location at the end of your driveway. If necessary, shovel a small area. Collection crews will not dig out or climb a snowbank to retrieve recycling bins, cans or bags. • Materials frozen inside bins may not be collected. To prevent freezing, line your green bin with newspaper and keep your recyclables in a dry location. • Stack recycling bins to ensure materials are secure. • If materials are hit by snow removal equipment or are filled with snow prior to collection, it is the resident’s responsibility to clean up the materials. • If collection services are cancelled due to inclement weather or poor road conditions, Green For Life's normal practice is to collect the items the following day.

BULKY ITEM COLLECTION

Non-metal items such as furniture, mattresses, box springs, plastic lawn furniture, toilets and carpeting are picked up with regular waste collection. A maximum of five bulky waste items can be placed at the curb on your scheduled garbage collection day. Any items over the five item limit will be tagged and left at the curb. All items must be set out by 7 a.m. for collection. If possible, please break-down or separate large/heavy items, remove toilet tanks from bowls, bundle small pieces and tie carpeting and linoleum into rolls measuring no longer than 1.2 metres (4 ft.) and weighing less than 20 kilograms (44 lbs.).

METAL GOODS AND APPLIANCE COLLECTION

Large metal items such as appliances, barbecues (excluding propane tanks), bed frames, furnaces, hot water heaters, metal bath tubs and bicycles must be recycled. Please call our waste collection contractor, GFL at 905-713-0005 or 1-866-421-5625 to arrange for a special curbside collection. For program details, please refer to page 18. If a special collection is not booked, metal items will not be picked-up.

PLEASE NOTE: Metal appliances and scrap metal can also be dropped off at select York Region depots. (see page 4 for details).

Reasons for Missed or Refused Collection While having your material left behind is upsetting, it is important to remember there is often a good reason for it. Common reasons for missed and refused collection are:

• Items were not set out on time. As a reminder, items must be to the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. • Green Bin, Blue Box, garbage bags/cans exceeds the 22 kg (50 lbs) weight limit. • Garbage/recycling is hidden behind parked vehicles or snow banks. • Presence of prohibited waste. For example: hazardous waste, tires, grass clippings/sod, construction/demolition waste etc. • Contamination of recyclables with garbage, plastic bags, Styrofoam, etc. • Toilet bowl and tank are not separated.

50

50

• Waste is not placed in proper containers. For example: yard waste set out in plastic bags, oversized, damaged container or in cardboard boxes. • Recyclable items were placed in clear plastic bags instead of the Blue Box. • Cardboard is not broken down, bundled and tied. • Collection may be delayed due to inclement weather. • Organics have unacceptable items in the Green Bin. • Collection boxes must be placed no more than 5 metres to 16.5 ft from the street.

Leaf and Yard Waste Collection Yard waste is collected bi-weekly with recycling from April to December, as part of your regularly scheduled collection day. Yard Waste Reminders

• Weeds, plant trimmings, crab apples and leaves must be placed in kraft paper yard bags or a rigid, open-top container that has sturdy handles. • If using rigid containers for yard waste, please ensure you place a “Yard Waste” sticker on the container. Yard waste stickers are available at Aurora Town Hall. • Maximum weight allowed for yard waste is 22 kg (50 lbs.). • In cooler weather, yard waste items can freeze to containers which may cause containers to crack. • Yard waste in plastic bags, cardboard boxes, Blue Boxes, Green Bins, laundry bins, blue recycling bags and biodegradable bags will not be collected. • Seasonal décor such as pumpkins, straw and corn stalks are collected as yard waste. Please use twine to bundle branches as shown. Do not use rope.

Backyard Composting Composting at home produces an excellent soil conditioner that will improve the quality of your soil and the plants growing in it. At the same time, you will reduce your kitchen and yard waste disposal. For backyard composting tips, please visit the Town's website at aurora.ca/composting.

Grasscycling

Grass clippings help retain moisture in your lawn and supply the soil with nitrogen, which creates lush, green grass. So make life easy – when you mow your grass leave the clippings on the lawn.

York Region’s

5

ways

For many families, shopping and preparing meals comes with a lot of food waste. On average, York Region households throw away $1,500 worth of food each year. Here are some simple tips to reduce food waste and save time and money:

1 2 3 4 5

Discover tips for planning healthy family meals at york.ca/goodfood

to save time, money and reduce waste

Plan ahead and shop with a list (check your cupboards in advance to avoid buying duplicates) Buy only what you need; bulk buying or buying on sale is only cost effective if the product is actually used Choose recipes you can make ahead, giving you more time with your family and friends Serve smaller portions; preparing or setting out more than they can eat is more food wasted Freeze leftovers to enjoy later; soups, stews, pasta and casseroles freeze well

#PlanPrepareEnjoy

SCRAPE THE DISHES BEFORE YOU WASH. DON’T POUR

FATS, OILS OR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN.

Fats, oils and grease can have a serious impact on your home and the environment. When poured down the sink, drain or toilet, they can clog your pipes and our sewers. Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking, including: butter and margarine, cooking oils (including deep frying oils), meat fats, salad dressings, sauces, gravies, shortening and lard. PROPER Disposal • Fats, oils and grease are organic waste that belong in your green bin • Wait for fats, oils and grease to cool and harden, then scrape into the green bin • Use a small amount of paper towel to help wipe and absorb the liquid before placing it in your green bin • Liquid cooking oil can also be dropped off at a York Region waste depot to be recycled into biodiesel Cool it, scrape it, green bin it. visit york.ca/fog
