Helpful Tips For Zero Waste Living • De-clutter your home and donate items to your local thrift shop. You’ll lighten your load and make precious resources available to those looking to buy secondhand. • Reduce your shopping trips and keep a shopping list. The less you bring home, the less waste you’ll have to deal with. • Swap disposables for reusables (start using handkerchiefs, refillable bottles, shopping totes, cloth napkins, rags, etc.). You might find that you don’t miss your paper towels, but rather enjoy the savings. • Avoid grocery shopping waste: Bring reusable totes, cloth bags (for bulk aisles), and jars (for wet items like cheese and deli foods) to the store and farmers market. • Know the Town's recycling policies – but think of recycling as a last resort. Have you reduced, reused or recycled first? Question the need and life-cycle of your purchases. • Buy primarily in bulk or secondhand, but if you must buy new, choose glass, metal or cardboard. Try to avoid plastic, since much of it gets shipped across the world for recycling and often ends up in the landfill, or worse, the ocean. • Find a compost system that works for your home. • Turn your home kitchen trash can into one large compost receptacle. The bigger the compost receptacle, the more likely you’ll be to use it freely.

NOT ACCEPTED Please DO NOT include the following items in your Blue Box: • Backyard composters, Blue Boxes and Green Bins • Containers for motor oil, pesticides or fuel. • Foil drink pouches (For example: Kool-Aid Jammers) • Formed, rigid plastic packaging (For example: blister pack used for electronics or toys) • Laminated paper • Medicine bottles less than 5 cm in diameter • Metallic wrapping paper • Mirrors • Non-rigid plastic packaging (For example: pasta bags, frozen vegetable bags) • Paint cans containing paint or with lids on • Plastic pails or jugs greater than 22.5 cm in diameter • Plastic shopping bags, film and wrap. • Plastic toys • Pots, pans, glassware and dishes. • Shredded paper • Styrofoam • Take-out sandwich wraps (For example: foil or paper laminates) • Take-out waxed pop cups Please note: • Plastic plant trays must be no larger than 30 cm wide by 30 cm long • Paper coffee cups only

CURBSIDE PLACEMENT HELPFUL TIPS

• Place oversized items 0.5 metre (2 feet) away from your garbage bin (not in it). • Please take apart or separate large heavy items. • Dishes, metal pots, pans and utensils do not belong in the Blue Box. If in good condition, these can be donated for reuse. • Please do not place recyclables inside cardboard boxes or any recyclables inside another recyclable. BROKEN GLASS Handling broken glass is a serious risk for waste collectors. Please be mindful of the proper handling procedures for this material. Never put broken glass of any kind into your Blue Box. Bundle it up in a puncture-proof container or wrap it in newspaper and put it in the garbage. PLEASE NOTE: Metal appliances and scrap metal can also be dropped off at select York Region depots. (see page 4 for details).

WINTER REMINDERS

• Place waste bins in a visible location at the end of your driveway. Collection crews will not dig out or climb a snowbank to retrieve recycling bins, cans or bags. If necessary, shovel a small area. • Materials frozen inside bins may not be collected. To prevent freezing, try lining your green bin with newspaper and keep your recyclables in a dry location. • Stack recycling boxes to prevent materials from blowing out. • If materials are hit by snow removal equipment or are filled with snow prior to collection, it is the resident’s responsibility to clean up the materials. • If inclement weather or poor road conditions result in cancellation of collection services, the normal practice is to collect the next day.

Blue Box collection tips: • All Blue Box recyclables must be set out at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day, but no sooner than 5 p.m. the night before. This includes the blue recycling bags. • Place acceptable materials loose in your Blue Box. Rinse all containers and ensure they are clean and free of grease, liquid or food. • Please use a standard size Blue Box (22g). Large oversized containers (with wheels) are frequently over the weight limit of 22 kg (50 lbs). • Small boxes need to be flattened and securely placed inside the Blue Box. Larger cardboard items must also be flattened but can be bundled together and placed on top of the Blue Box for pick-up. • Shredded paper is not accepted as part of The Town of Aurora's recycling program. Small amounts of shredded paper can be placed in your Green Bin or backyard composter. Large amounts of shredded paper can be placed in your garbage or dropped off at one of the following York Region's Community Environmental Centres: Elgin Mills or McCleary Court.

Garbage Collection

The Town of Aurora encourages residents to use a backyard composter!

Garbage collection occurs bi-weekly on your regular collection day. • All waste materials must be set out at the curb by 7 a.m. on the collection day. Collection vehicles will not return for items that were set out late. • Renovation materials such as lumber, drywall or fixtures will not be collected at the curb. See page 2 for disposal options. • Garbage bags or reusable containers with contents must not exceed 23 kilograms (50 pounds) each. • The size of the garbage container cannot exceed 133 Litres (35 gallons). • Tie loose items into bundles no longer than 1.2 metres (4 feet). • Garbage will not be collected in cardboard boxes. • All garbage must be contained in a plastic bag in order to be collected.

REMINDERS:

Composting at home produces an excellent soil conditioner that will improve your soil and the plants growing in it, AND reduce kitchen and yard waste disposal! For backyard composting tips, visit the Town's waste and recycling web page www.aurora.ca/composting.

Collector safety Place sharp objects such as broken glass, mirrors, razors and nails in a cardboard box, tape securely, and write “SHARP OBJECTS” on the box with a permanent marker. Please note: For safety reasons, residents are not permitted to put items into the collection vehicles.

SORRY! This wasn’t your week for garbage collection! Please put it out NEXT WEEK. For your garbage collection schedule, check out your 2016 Community and Waste Management Calendar

OOPS! Reasons for Missed or Refused Collection While having your material left behind is upsetting, it is important to remember there is often a good reason for it. Common reasons for missed and refused collection are:

• Items were not set out on time. As a reminder, items must be to the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. • Green Bin, Blue Box, garbage bags/cans exceeds the 22 kg (50 lbs) weight limit. • Garbage/recycling is hidden behind parked vehicles or snow banks. • Items are hidden behind snow or other obstructions. • Presence of prohibited waste. For example: hazardous waste, tires, grass clippings/sod, construction/demolition waste etc. • Contamination of recyclables with garbage. • Toilet bowl and tank are not separated.

• Waste is not placed in proper containers. For example: yard waste set out in plastic bags, oversized, damaged container or in cardboard boxes. • Recyclable items were placed in clear plastic bags instead of the Blue Box. • Cardboard is not broken down, bundled and tied. • Collection may be delayed due to inclement weather. • Organics have unacceptable items in the Green Bin. • Collection boxes must be placed no more than 5 metres to 16.5 ft from the street.

GRASSCYCLING Grasscycling is an easy way to provide your lawn with great nutrition. Just leave the clippings on the ground. Grass clippings help retain moisture in your lawn and supply the soil with nitrogen, which creates lush, green grass. So, make life easy - when you mow your grass leave the clippings on the lawn!

Do you ever… • Put more food on your plate than you can eat? • Buy food on impulse and not eat it? • Find wilted lettuce in the back of your fridge?

Did you know? About 40 per cent of the food produced in Canada is thrown away. More than half of this waste comes from our homes.

Good Food offers simple tips to help you plan and prepare meals, save time and money. It also helps you eat healthy and waste less. Some tips include: • Plan your meals and use a shopping list • Freeze foods and leftovers if you’re not going to eat them in time • Understand best before dates reflect freshness, quality and taste, not food safety

#PlanPrepareEnjoy

Safe Disposal of Fat, Oil and Grease How you dispose of fat, oil and grease can have a serious impact on your home and the environment. When poured down the sink, drain or toilet, they can clog sewer pipes. Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking. Including: • Butter and margarine • Shortening and lard • Salad dressings • Cooking oils (including deep frying oils) • Sauces and gravies SAFE DISPOSAL • Fat, oils and grease are organic waste that should be placed in your green bin • Before washing cooking equipment and dirty dishes, wait for fats, oils and grease to harden, then wipe with a paper towel or scrape it into the green bin • If fats, oils and grease are in liquid form, leave it to cool then empty into the green bin • Liquid cooking oil that won’t solidify can be dropped off at one of York Region’s waste depots for recycling into biodiesel For more information visit york.ca/wastedepots
