COVID-19 MANAGEMENT
We are looking forward to seeing you (from 2 metres away)! The health and safety of our facility users and staff is our top priority. All programs, events and services will run in compliance with current Provincial and Regional Health Department guidelines and regulations. All programs and services are subject to change. Here is what we are doing to keep everyone safe: Limited access into the building to those who are there to participate in an activity and one companion where permitted.
A greeter will be at the main doors of our facilities to ensure patrons entering are registered for an activity/permit and to conduct a health screening.
Signage, markers, arrows and alternate exits throughout the buildings to help direct users, encourage physical distancing, and maintain one-way traffic where possible. Limited use of changerooms. Hand sanitizer stations throughout the buildings.
Pre-registration will be required for all participation. This includes activities that were previously “drop-in” in nature such as lane swim, fitness classes, leisure skate, etc. More details are throughout this guide.
A preliminary health screening questionnaire will be required when a participant pre-registers for an activity.
Customer service counters will have plexiglass barriers.
Facility cleaning and sanitization will take place frequently, especially for high touch areas and shared equipment.
Every person entering the facility must wear a mask as per York Region’s guidelines. Exceptions apply when participating in a physical activity.

MAYOR & COUNCIL
MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the Fall 2020 Program Guide. As I sit here writing this in June, like you, I am unclear what the future holds post COVID-19. But, I am optimistic that as a community we have persevered through the quarantine days and brighter days are upon us. As the school year begins, I hope the children in our community have enjoyed their summer and are excited to start a new year. The anticipation of seeing their friends and getting back into a routine will be great news for both parents and children. As a Town, we value the choice of getting active and adopting healthy lifestyles. As you browse through this guide, you will learn about the many recreational programs the Town offers. We have developed programs for all ages and abilities – always keeping your safety in mind. If you’re looking to get active but in a more structured setting to achieve your fitness goals, Club Aurora may be the right choice. The facility features an active workout space with a variety of cardio and newly updated strength training equipment. We offer programs and classes for all fitness levels. The most up to date information is available at aurora.ca/clubaurora.

Welcome to the Aurora Cultural Centre Engaging performing arts, exhibitions and special events for all ages.
We’re on the move! The Town of Aurora construction plans for Library Square start to take shape in 2020, requiring us to move offsite. We’ll be ‘taking the show on the road,’ and are excited to share these details with you. Galleries, Educational Programs and Administrative Offices have all moved to Aurora Town Hall, 100 John West Way, Aurora. Performing arts events will be programmed at venues throughout Aurora; please see the Performing Arts Update below for further details. *Please note, due to COVID-19 measures, as of press time, all Town facilities including Town Hall remain closed, and staff are working offsite.
Performing Arts Update An expression tied so closely to the theatrical world, ‘waiting in the wings’ perfectly sums up our performing arts programming for Fall 2020. Here is what we know at press time. The safety and security of our patrons, artists, volunteers and staff remains at the centre of our operations. While we have curated a series of live performances this upcoming season, we are not yet able to announce our lineup. As public health measures are announced, we will adapt our programming accordingly. This will include reduced event sizes, a transparent return-to-the-concert hall set of best practices as developed by the performing arts industry, and offsite opportunities such as live streaming local events. Due to the move offsite during the Library Square construction project, the Centre’s professional performing arts will be delivered at venues throughout Aurora.

flight2 An exhibition of drawings by Grazyna Tonkiel and sculpture by Gordon Becker Curated by Clare Bolton King artist Grazyna Tonkiel has been celebrating butterflies or the “mystic creatures” as she refers to them with vibrant art pencil and gold leaf drawings for more than two decades. Gordon Becker’s life in art began in earnest when at the age of 11 he was captivated by a film of an Inuit carver creating an image full of magic and power from a raw lump of stone. He decided right then to become a carver. Together flight2 will showcase the exceptional butterfly drawings and wood carvings of these award winning artists. This is an extraordinary, not to be missed, exhibition that is perfect for the whole family. Visit AuroraCulturalCentre.ca to view the exhibition online. Art Events: Don’t miss our upcoming Art Bytes to enhance your exhibition experience! Check the website for the upcoming schedule. Gallery Admission and Art Events offered at no charge Location: Artwork installed at the Aurora Town Hall – 2nd Floor, and available for viewing online.

PARKS & TRAILS PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town facilities and open space corridors. Presently the Town maintains approximately 62 kilometers of trails. Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley Trail. This trail is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Vandorf in the south (just west of Bayview Avenue) all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad at Industrial Parkway North. The trail corridor links municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex as well as the Aurora Community Arborteum, Sheppard’s Bush and Lambert Willson Park. Another significant trail corridor is the Willow Farm, Lakeview Trail system; a trail linking parks and linear open space corridors within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora. The topography is very undulating as the trail rises up to one of the highest points of elevation within Aurora. All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times. COMMUNITY PARKS & SPORTS FACILITIES The town currently has over 75 parks and open space areas including 44 playgrounds encompassing over 700 acres, 3 children’s water-play splash pads, 35 soccer fields, 18 ball diamonds and a wide variety of other recreational activities. Please come out and enjoy what Aurora has to offer! Our latest addition is Thomas Coates Park; it is located at 234 Mavrinac Blvd. This park has tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, a playground, an open play-space and on-sight parking. For further information please visit www.aurora.ca/parksandtrails EMERALD ASH BORER The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive insect that kills all types of healthy ash trees. The insect was discovered in Aurora in 2011. While the Emerald Ash Borer poses no risk to human health, it is a significant threat to our forests. The Town currently has a vendor in place to provide treatment services to combat the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer. The contract will provide for the preventative application of a pesticide approved in Canada that has shown to protect ash trees from the EAB. Approximately 2,000 publicly-owned trees along boulevards and rights-ofway have been identified in the Town’s street tree inventory as potential candidates for treatment. Trees meeting the treatment criteria will be marked by Town staff with a small green, highly-visible painted dot.
MEMORIAL TREE & PARK BENCH DEDICATION PROGRAM Would you like to establish “Lasting Roots” in your community? Are you looking for a unique gift idea for that special person or occasion? Perhaps you feel like making an investment in greening your community? If so, we encourage you to contact the Parks Division to find out more about the memorial tree planting and park bench dedication program. Please call 905-727-3123 ext 3233 or email eharrison@aurora.ca. AURORA ADOPT-A-PARK IS YOUR CHANCE TO GROW WITH THE COMMUNITY Over 700 acres of Parkland, an outstanding trail system and friendly treelined streets contribute to Aurora’s natural beauty and make it a place we are proud to call home. Did you know that the Adopt-A-Park program provides local businesses, community groups and residents with the opportunity to enhance the environment and beautify our town by assisting with the maintenance and developement of Aurora’s parks and trail systems? Adopt-A-Park continues to: • Create opportunities for citizens to support our parks and green spaces. • Share the responsibility for a clean community. • Develop opportunities for youth involvement. • Build community pride and a sense of ownership in our parklands. Including tree and shrub plantings, there are a number of ways for individuals, interested groups and organizationst to become involved in this exciting program. Please contact the Parks Division at 905-727-3123 ext. 3233 for further information or email eharrison@aurora.ca.
