The Centre’s Art Galleries, Educational Programs and Administrative Offices have all moved to Aurora Town Hall, 100 John West Way, Aurora, ON. Arts classes, workshops and performing arts events are currently presented at venues throughout Aurora, including CFWI Aurora Armoury. Please see location information for each program.

Featuring members of the Society of York Region Artists Co-Curated by the Aurora Historical Society and Aurora Cultural Centre

Inspirations From a Space of Healing is a multisite exhibition located at the Hilary House National Historic site and the Aurora Cultural Centre’s temporary home at the Aurora Town Hall (second floor). Featuring work by artists of the Society of York Region Artists, this exhibition looks to artifacts within the Hilary House National Historic site for inspiration.

Built in 1862, Hillary House is recognized by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board as one of the best examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Canada. It was used as a doctor’s practice and family residence for over 100 years and contains a significant collection of medical instruments, books, papers, household furnishings dating from the early nineteenth to the late twentieth century.

A group exhibition with Aurora’s High School Seniors

For nearly a decade, the Aurora Cultural Centre has continued its tradition of an annual Youth Art Show. Beginning with just one Aurora-based high school, the show has expanded to include four: including up to 32 students in a single exhibition. In partnership with the Town of Aurora, the small, community tradition has evolved into the highly anticipated Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts.

Samar Hejazi

Samar Hejazi is a multi-disciplinary visual artist living between Toronto and Dubai. Since graduating with a BFA in new media from Ryerson University in Toronto, she has attended instructional residencies at Arquetopia in Oaxaca, and Puebla in Mexico and Cusco, Peru in 2016 and 2019 respectively. She also attended the Takt Art Residency in Berlin in 2016 and completed a studio residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto in 2019, which concluded in a group show. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Textile Museum of Canada, Warehouse421 in Abu Dhabi, Possum Gallery in Berlin, Motion Art Gallery in Cairo, Egypt and Decentered Gallery in Puebla, Mexico. Her artwork is part of multiple collections around the world.

You Can Uke It! with Anthony Clayton (B.A. Hons., B.Ed., Orff)

 Ages 8+ Embark on your musical journey with the ukulele, the perfect ‘starter’ instrument. Learn all of the basics, such as chords and strum patterns through a variety of familiar songs. Ukulele for Beginners with Anthony Clayton (B.A. Hons., B.Ed., Orff)

Want to get happy? Learn to play the oh-so-hip ukulele! Come to this ground level introductory course – no musical theory required. You will learn all of the basics: the most commonly used chords, standard tuning, and simple strumming techniques. By the end, you’ll be able to play all of your favourite songs. Beginning Guitar with Anthony Clayton (B.A. Hons., B.Ed., Orff)

If you have always wanted to play guitar - with friends, by a campfire, or for yourself in your favourite room – this course is for you. Beginning Guitar is an accompaniment-based group course designed to introduce you to a range of chords and strum patterns that will get you on your way. Exploring Watercolours (Intermediate/Advanced) with Kathryn Christensen (B.F.A.)

The Art of Calligraphy with Salman Khattak

Have you always admired beautiful handwriting and wanted to know how to achieve it? Then this beginner’s workshop is for you! In this workshop complete with hand-outs, you will learn Gothic calligraphy style, a type of calligraphy with a beautiful flow that produces dramatic compositions. Your cards and invitations will take on a whole new flair! This versatile and attractive script is well within your reach. Returning students from previous workshops are invited and encouraged to learn this new style. All materials and tools supplied by the instructor for a $20.00 Materials Fee. Bring a bagged lunch.

Watercolours: Basics & Beyond with Kathryn Christensen (B.F.A.)

In this beginner class students will work with the beautiful medium of watercolours through demonstrations, exercises, and paintings. You will learn the proper tools and supplies, understanding the balance of colour and water, mixing colours, and the importance of tone. Stained Glass Suncatcher with Siobhan Lynch

Brighten up the Winter season in this introductory stained glass suncatcher workshop. Learn all of the basics of this unique art form, including how to safely cut, grind, foil, solder, patina and polish to create your own striking glass art ornament that you can share with someone special (or keep for yourself!). Carve Your Own Love Spoon with Marlene Ash

This Valentine’s Day, learn to carve a wooden heart or Love Spoon for someone you care about. Welsh Love Spoons are decoratively hand-carved wooden spoons that date back to the 17th century, and they often feature hearts, Celtic knotwork, bells, and horseshoes. Appropriate for the absolute beginner to the experienced carver, in this heritage craft workshop you will learn safe and skillful use of the knife, gouges, and other tools. Make Your Own Mosaic with Karen Johnston (B.F.A., RECE)

A mosaic is an image or pattern created by arranging small regular or irregular pieces of coloured stone, tile, glass, or ceramic, held in place by an adhesive, and covering a surface. Mosaics have a rich, long history and have been crafted since the ancient world. In this workshop, you will learn under esteemed mosaics artist, Karen Johnston about the tools and techniques to establish your unique design and create a decorative frame. From afar, mosaic art glistens with its impressive array of colours and patterns, while up close, the intricacies involved are revealed.
