STUDENT STANDOUTS
by stephanie wallace SKYE PATTON OF MICDS
IN AUGUST, SKYE PATTON took to the ice in Tampa, Florida, to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase. She won first in her division for her lyrical pop routine. Not long after, she was back in the StL, starting her senior year at MICDS where she’s just as busy off the ice, helping lead student council and volunteering with underserved students.
When did you start figure skating? When I was around 6 years old, my grandmother bought me skating lessons at Brentwood Ice Rink with Learn to Skate. I’d gone to a birthday party at an ice rink and was interested in learning more. Now, I’m actually an instructor with Learn to Skate
What is your favorite part of performing? The feeling that you can do anything—it’s just something that is so powerful. You almost feel like you’re flying. When you’re on the ice, you get to express yourself fully, which isn’t something that many people get to experience. It’s a special feeling.
How was your experience in the U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase this year? I skated four programs, three solos in the intermediate division and one senior duet. I ended up placing first for my lyrical pop routine, giving me the opportunity to compete against the top 20 skaters at the showcase, which was amazing. It was an incredibly affirming and empowering experience. Do you plan to continue pursuing figure skating? I’m auditioning for Disney on Ice. If I get the opportunity to skate with the company, I will take a gap year before going to college. As for looking at universities, one of my requirements is finding a school with its own rink on campus. Skating is a very important way I relieve stress.
You’re also co-head of your student council. I’ve been on the student council for four years. I was a representative for two years, and in my junior year, I became the first female president of my class. I absolutely lovehaving a say in what goes on around our school and helping the student body with whatever it needs.
Are you excited about senior year? A lot of senior year is about looking forward to the future, but I want to take the time to really appreciate where I am now. I’ve been given a huge opportunity to attend MICDS. Many people don’t have access to this type of education, and I’m incredibly grateful. I want to ensure I make the most of this opportunity and appreciate what is around me.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I currently run a nonprofit called The Literacy Initiative. It works with economically disadvantaged students to provide school supplies and after school care and is completely run by high school students. We go into elementary and middle schools and work with students on their literacy, but we also play games and do fun activities. It helps the kids reach a strong reading level and make connections with older students who they can talk to. Previously, I served on the board, and I took over my junior year. Most of my free time goes to it, but it’s 100% worth it. The kids are incredible, and I’m so happy I can help them in any way. &
