hether it’s an engagement or another important milestone, we often choose jewelry to commemorate special times in our lives. At The Diamond Bar in Town and Country, owner Chris Phillips believes the piece itself should be equally as special. He is dedicated to providing a shopping experience unlike any other. Along with providing repair and appraisal services, the store helps clients create one-of-a-kind pieces and offers a unique selection of custom jewelry for them to shop.
For almost two decades, Phillips has been perfecting the craft of jewelry design, so he can create pieces that are unlike those found in most display cases. He enjoys bringing people’s visions to life, so they walk away happy with something completely original and unique to them.
Our goal is to find create something that fall in love with than another piece that could find in jewelry display.

When designing a custom item at The Diamond Bar, people can bring in their own diamonds and gemstones or choose from the store’s selection of natural diamonds and other stones. Phillips meets with clients one-on-one to discuss ideas and hand sketch the design. Those sketches are then used to create a 3D model in a computer program. The program allows the design to be altered, so the final product is exactly as desired. The model is used to create a wax mold, which is cast in the metal of the customer’s choosing. “The final product is hand-set and polished to perfection right here in the shop,” he says.

The Diamond Bar lives up to its name as it includes a fully stocked bar that is complimentary for guests. It is part of Phillips’ unique approach to customer service. One of his major goals is to create a less stressful experience. “We provide a relaxed atmosphere that allows clients to focus on their wants and needs, not what a store is trying to sell them,” he explains. “Our goal is to find or create something that you fall in love with rather than just another piece that you could find in any jewelry display. Our elevated spirits bar and jewelry bar, helps our clients relax and shop while not feeling overwhelmed.”

The store recently celebrated its two-year anniversary. Phillips says he’s grateful for the support The Diamond Bar has received. “We have been fortunate enough to create hundreds of new pieces for clients,” he notes. “We love to design, and our clients give us the freedom to do so. As we continue, we’re looking forward to becoming St. Louis’ custom jewelry store. We want people to know they don’t have to be afraid of choosing a custom piece. At The Diamond Bar, they have a place where you can get something that is truly one-of-a-kind.”

“Custom jewelry allows you to design a ring or special piece that only you will have,” he says. “At The Diamond Bar, creating a custom piece doesn’t cost more than purchasing something pre-made. We design each piece per our client’s budget, depending on the stones chosen.”

AS WELL AS BEING IMPORTANT MILESTONES, birthdays are a time of happiness. This year, West County Center is turning 20, and on Sept. 20, it’s throwing a special celebration—but the birthday joy doesn’t stop there. The shopping center has partnered with the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition (FACC) to ensure local children living in foster care can enjoy their special days, too. Shoppers can donate gift cards from West County Center stores to children who could use a birthday surprise. FACC helps children and their foster families celebrate with its Birthday Buddies program. The initiative matches donors with children in foster care who are unlikely to receive any gifts on their birthdays. “Many foster parents have big hearts but not wallets, and birthday gifts often are an extra expense they cannot cover,” explains Shelley Thomas-Benke, FACC director of volunteers. The gift card drive at West County Center has allowed the nonprofit to reach even more youth in foster care, including older teens who may be preparing to age out of the system. To make a donation, West County shoppers first need to visit the large, decorative birthday cake on Level 1 of the mall near Nordstrom. Shoppers can take an envelope from the cake, purchase a gift card from the store indicated and drop the donation inside the cake. They can even include a personal message to the child with the gift. “For many of these kids, getting to shop for themselves is a rare occurrence,” Thomas-Benke says. “I had one parent tell me that their foster child was able to buy a name brand track suit with his gift card. He was excited because he never had anything like it before. He got to feel proud of the clothes he wore for the first time. It’s not just a birthday treat, but also a self esteem boost.” West County Center launched the gift card drive in spring of 2021. It had previously worked with FACC on an annual sock and underwear drive. Looking for a charitable initiative to celebrate Missouri’s bicentennial, the shopping center’s marketing director, Sean Phillips, reached out about collaborating again. Since then, shoppers have donated more than $14,000 worth of gift cards to ensure kids and teens can feel celebrated on their birthdays. “This has been the most amazing partnership,” Thomas-Benke notes. “We’re so grateful that the center chose us for this program. Hundreds of kids have been impacted by the birthday initiative at West County Center.” The shopping center soon will celebrate its own milestone as Sept. 20 marks the 20th anniversary of its remodel and reopening. Guests who choose to dine at West County Center on that day will be able to enjoy festivities like free caricatures, balloon sculptures and live music. Starting at 11 a.m., the first 20 diners at California Pizza Kitchen and Nordstrom Cafe Bistro for lunch will receive a special gift, and the same is true for the first 20 dinner guests at J. Gilberts and California Pizza Kitchen, starting at 4 p.m. “The traditional gift for a 20th anniversary is china, so we’re giving away vases embossed with a gold dove along with gift cards to the restaurants,” Phillips notes. “We hope that the community comes out to celebrate with us.” COUNTY CENTER IS CELEBRATING ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SPECIAL GIVEAWAY.

What major 1980s theatrical release detailed the true story of a man’s post-WWII quest to build the world’s best automobile?
LAST ISSUE’S Q & A by bill beggs jr.
clayton
One of the greatest actors of all time, Marlon Brando had three distinct periods during his career, based entirely on his size and shape. I may be no film critic, but I know a mesomorph from an endomorph. Brando’s physique for On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire was buff—muscular, like a boxer. Pure mesomorph. Late in his career, he had gotten all flabby. In Apocalypse Now he was an endomorph in the extreme. That said, we talk about a golden anniversary elsewhere in this issue, so let’s stick to that theme: Brando was kind of a nondescript middle-aged man with thinning hair in two classic films from 1972: The Godfather and Last Tango in Paris, both of which soon will get the Golden Anniversary treatment from Cinema St. Louis. Long considered one of the best films ever, the violent Mafia fable screens at the Central Library on Olive on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 12:30 p.m. Vincent Casaregola, professor of English and director of SLU’s film studies program, will handle the intro and discussion. An online viewing and discussion of Last Tango in Paris will be held Monday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Eileen G’Sell, RFT film critic and senior lecturer in Wash U’s college writing program, will helm the intro and discussion. Visit cinemastlouis.org for more information.
The weatherbeaten man stands at the end of the exit ramp, battered cardboard sign in his hands that reads “Hungry. Homeless. Anything helps. God bless.” Of course you see him as you pull your car to a stop, but you do your best not to look at him as he walks past your door and on to the vehicles behind you. Maybe a driver rolls down the window and hands him something—cash, change or a fresh bottle of water. The light changes, and you see him start his march back to the starting point to do it all over again. You make your turn and go on your way. You don’t have to see it anymore, but it continues to bother you. It’s a thorny issue, indeed. Let’s break it down to free speech vs. public safety. Robert Fernandez is an unhoused man who in May 2021 won a $150,000 judgment plus attorney’s fees in a federal lawsuit arguing that St. Louis County’s panhandling laws were unconstitutional. A subsequent flurry of legislation in small and large municipalities made new allowances here and restrictions there, ostensibly based on public safety. For instance, no one may stand in a concrete median less than six feet wide, and they’re supposed to stay out of traffic. The unhoused aren’t limited to sidewalks downtown, of course. So as we emerge from the yearslong pandemic, I suspect people who are more desperate are competing for the few safe square feet of real estate at intersections. How we respond to their silent pleas is up to us, but none of us can pretend we don’t see them.
There’ll be more art and music in downtown Clayton on Sept. 9 to 11 than most humans could hope to enjoy in a month, including the four St. Louis Story Stitchers performances put on as part of the nonprofit’s ongoing Pick the City UP! Tour. Doing its part to prevent gun violence through various forms of art, this troupe makes its bold statement through stories, dance and music. Story Stitchers encourages Black youth ages 16 to 24 to use creative ways of expressing themselves. A long-held dream will become reality in December for this nationally recognized artist collective: The Center for Youth Arts and Technology. The center will open in the Grand Center at the 3701 Grandel Square location of Kranzberg Arts Foundation, where Story Stitchers is a resident arts organization. Young people who’ve received the unique support from Story Stitchers’ development programs have done much of the heavy lifting needed to bring The Center to fruition. It will provide underserved teens and young adults with needed resources, including safe spaces to gather and meet friends who also are passionate about preventing violence; culturally relevant mentors; stipends for youth; and opportunities to serve as community leaders while gaining skills in organization, listening and public speaking. The ultimate goal is to aid youth in lifting themselves up into productive employment and a healthy adulthood. The Center, to occupy 4,550 square feet, is supported in part by a $500,000 Accelerator Award given to Saint Louis Story Stitchers in 2021 from the Lewis Prize for Music, a philanthropic music organization advancing systems change through creative youth development. The artists collective this year has received other monetary support including a recent $25,000 grant from the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation. The Center Cabinet, formed by Story Stitchers to bring more youth voices into planning for The Center, will employ a group of 12 young men to meet as needed to plan meals, selecting furnishings for The Center and to develop programs centered on music, media arts and healing. Visit storystitchers.org. st. louis

In 1988, Tucker: The Man and His Dream detailed the true story of a man’s post-WWII quest to build the world’s best automobile. Although a good movie starring Jeff Bridges, it bombed—that is, took in much less than it cost to produce. Stream it; you just might like it, too. The 1972 opening night video will be screened. But without Joe and Linda Edwards, none of this would have come to pass. “The area was really down and out,” says Joe. “This street had pretty much been given up for dead.” Instead of restaurants and specialty stores on both sides of Delmar, including Blueberry Hill’s iconic neighbor Vintage Vinyl, there was maybe an insurance office here, a solo accountant there. Enthusiasm and vision are Joe Edwards’ stock in trade, but the Duke psychology grad needed financing to get his show on the road. “Linda and I borrowed $10,500 from friends,” he recalls, his eyes twinkling. “A bank wouldn’t have given me a loan in a million years!” Suffice it to say, that has changed, what with Edwards being a known quantity synonymous with unique, thriving development in the Delmar Loop. His favorite moniker, ‘Duke of Delmar,’ was bestowed as he developed areas to the east and west of Skinker Boulevard—now-beloved music halls The Pageant and Delmar Hall, the Moonrise Hotel with its own cratered satellite rotating above the rooftop patio. There’s more, of course: Pin-Up Bowl and Peacock Diner, with its fabulous neon sign. The facade of Blueberry Hill wasn’t quite as eye-catching a half-century ago, as you’ll see in the opening night video or photos from back in the day. It was relatively modest. No dancing couple, no brightly blinking marquee. But the Fats Domino song has served him well. “I found my thrill, on Blueberry Hill,” he recites. “What a tagline that is. Very optimistic.” Keep your eyes peeled for Magic Mini-Golf, projected to open winter 2023. Visit blueberryhill.com for more information. &

HOW DOES A PERSON go from writing for a tabloid like the New York Daily News to becoming a New York Times bestselling author? Apparently, all you need is a little bit of a time and a move to the Midwest. I had the pleasure of talking with author Sarah Kendzior about how she made that leap and became a St. Louisan. But first, the New York Daily News. Raise your hand if you occasionally glance at it online? Who doesn’t chuckle at headlines like “Monkey Calls 911 - Officials Respond to California Zoo?” It would be my dream job to be a headlined writer for that newspaper. I digress, back to Sarah. Like so many people, Sarah found St. Louis through Washington University where she earned her Ph.D. Two kids later, she is still here and happy to be in what many people consider flyover country. She is fascinated by the deep history of Missouri and St. Louis, as well as the sense of community she feels. So even though her face pops up regularly on NBC, MSNBC and PBS, it is usually from a room in her U. City home. As a life-long St. Louisan, it was interesting to hear Sarah talk about our fair town. I do forget how special this city can be. So, the interview was a nice wake up call as I heard her describe what she truly loves about her adopted hometown. Once Sarah completed her Ph.D. in anthropology, she decided not to pursue academics but instead focus on journalism since her research was centered on the rise of strong men and authoritarian governments. There was an increased demand for her knowledge, and St. Louis was the place she wanted to become her new home. Sarah quickly took advantage of all that St. Louis has to offer, but since she’s an explorer, she didn’t limit herself to just the city and county. As a matter of fact, she’s currently reading a book on the waterways of Missouri. Sarah’s new book They Knew will be released on Sept. 13, and I was fortunate enough to read an advance copy. The painstakingly researched book discusses conspiracy culture in the United States. It is not light reading but necessary as she shines a light on corruption within the government and topics like climate change, bank bailouts and a whole lot of other crises. Like many of us, she is confused by the lack of accountability and transparency: “The truth may hurt—but the lies will kill us.”
The launch of her book will be held right here in St. Louis Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Ethical Society on Clayton Road. The launch is hosted by Left Bank Books. You will not be bored by this book, the topic or Sarah! She also is the co-host of the podcast Gaslight Nation if you miss the event. So, while Sarah’s book may make you a little uncomfortable, give it a read. Remember, one of my goals for this year is to read books that challenge me, and this one most certainly did. Peace my Peeps. &

A lot of senior year is about looking forward to the future, but I want to take the time to really appreciate where I am now. I’ve been given a huge opportunity to attend MICDS. Do you plan to continue pursuing figure skating? I’m auditioning for Disney on Ice. If I get the opportunity to skate with the company, I will take a gap year before going to college. As for looking at universities, one of my requirements is finding a school with its own rink on campus. Skating is a very important way I relieve stress. You’re also co-head of your student council. I’ve been on the student council for four years. I was a representative for two years, and in my junior year, I became the first female president of my class. I absolutely lovehaving a say in what goes on around our school and helping the student body with whatever it needs. Are you excited about senior year?
How was your experience in the U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase this year? I skated four programs, three solos in the intermediate division and one senior duet. I ended up placing first for my lyrical pop routine, giving me the opportunity to compete against the top 20 skaters at the showcase, which was amazing. It was an incredibly affirming and empowering experience.
What is your favorite part of performing? The feeling that you can do anything—it’s just something that is so powerful. You almost feel like you’re flying. When you’re on the ice, you get to express yourself fully, which isn’t something that many people get to experience. It’s a special feeling.
I currently run a nonprofit called The Literacy Initiative. It works with economically disadvantaged students to provide school supplies and after school care and is completely run by high school students. We go into elementary and middle schools and work with students on their literacy, but we also play games and do fun activities. It helps the kids reach a strong reading level and make connections with older students who they can talk to. Previously, I served on the board, and I took over my junior year. Most of my free time goes to it, but it’s 100% worth it. The kids are incredible, and I’m so happy I can help them in any way. & AS PART OF ITS SPONSORSHIP, SPORT COURT HAS MADE A DONATION TO THE EQUAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE ON BEHALF OF SKYE.
IN AUGUST, SKYE PATTON took to the ice in Tampa, Florida, to compete in the U.S. Figure Skating National Showcase. She won first in her division for her lyrical pop routine. Not long after, she was back in the StL, starting her senior year at MICDS where she’s just as busy off the ice, helping lead student council and volunteering with underserved students. visit SJA! The Magic House maintains its operations through fundraising and donations, and the nonprofit’s largest annual fundraiser, The Magic Ball: Black, White & Bubbly, is Oct. 21 at Stifel Theatre. Event chair Betsy Toney says that guests can expect an exciting evening, including the chance to bid on auction items like a stay at a vineyard in Napa and a private dinner at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. The evening’s entertainment will be provided by comedian Ryan Beck, and Tim and Chris Convy will serve as emcees.

ASK A MAGICIAN, AND THEY’LL TELL YOU THAT THE KEY to any good magic trick is focus. That’s something The Magic House uses every day to spark the imagination of kids and families. For more than four decades, the Kirkwood children’s museum has actively engaged children of all ages in their education through hands-on exhibits and activities that pique curiosity, enhance creativity and develop problem-solving skills.

The gala directly benefits the museum’s Access for All initiative, which provides free or reduced admission, field trips, outreach programs and family nights for children in need. “Access for All makes visiting The Magic House possible for people who otherwise would not be able to afford it, such as children in foster care, military families and Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs,” Toney says. “It’s important to give families a place to learn, have fun and lift their spirits. We want to ensure more kids have access to the wonderful exhibits the museum has.”
Providing ACCESS without barriers
THE MUSEUM’S
Currently, museum visitors can explore the great outdoors of Alaska with an exhibit based on the PBS Kids series Molly of Denali. Children can learn about Alaska native life, traditions and language while engaging with activities like driving a snowmobile, navigating a snow maze in snowshoes, caring for sled dogs and ice fishing. The exhibit is just one example of how the museum teaches children how to be global citizens by encouraging them to learn about other cultures. “The Magic House meets kids where they are in their development stage but always encourages them to think of life outside of their current circumstances,” Toney notes. “They can learn about the world and how children’s experiences may be different depending on where they live. It expands their imagination and teaches them things that may not be covered in school.” For Toney, The Magic House’s programs are more important than ever since the pandemic put limitations on how students can engage with their education. Remote learning made hands-on learning activities difficult and increased the time kids spent looking at screens. “The emphasis on play was reduced, and kids were not able to learn through socializing with one another,” she says. “The Magic House does so much to counteract these trends. Visiting the museum gets children away from screens, allows them to use their imaginations and encourages them to play well with others. I hope people remember how important and beneficial these opportunities are for kids.” &
Do you have a favorite production you’ve worked on with STAGES?
It’s like picking a favorite child. I love every show we’ve done for different reasons. Our 2014 production of Fiddler on the Roof has stayed with me. It’s a classic musical, but I didn’t know enough about it. It’s so important to have the right storytelling. In fact, STAGES’ motto is: Experience the story. We had the perfect team for gorgeous storytelling in that show. I loved our production of In the Heights this season. The show is so reflective of community and inclusive of people. I would love to see more productions like it on the STAGES stage. This year, there also was our production of The Karate Kid - The Musical. I’m incredibly proud to have been part of the team that brought the pre-Broadway premiere to St. Louis.
I go back to that motto: Experience the story. For 36 years, STAGES has shared some beautiful productions with St. Louis, and I want to see what stories we will tell next and who will tell them. The best theater administrators are Renaissance people. We look at each department to help lead and provide a strategic vision for the company. I’m constantly asking questions about where we are today and where we want to be tomorrow. I’m looking forward to what STAGES can do with its next 36 years, and I want to grow our involvement with both the local and national arts communities. Are they any upcoming productions you are excited about? We’re finishing up our current season with A Chorus Line, Sept. 9 to Oct. 9. It is a true love story to musical theater and one of the most beloved musicals of all time. People are always asking us when we’re going to do it again, and this production is directed by our new artistic director Gayle Seay. I can’t wait to see what she does with the show. I hope people will come out and share our 2022 curtain call with us. & BY STEPHANIE WALLACE
What are you looking forward to when you take the executive producer position?

GOMUSTSHOWTHEON:
ANDREW KUHLMAN LOVES A GOOD STORY. Since childhood, the St. Louis native has loved treading the boards and telling tales to audiences. While you’re much more likely to find him working offstage than on these days, he’s still sharing his love of theater with the community. He’s been working with STAGES St. Louis as an administrator for the last decade, and next year, he’ll take on the role of executive producer.

Have you always been interested in theater? When I was a little kid, I loved performing in school plays, and I studied theatrical performance at Bradley University. There is something about the art of storytelling that compels me. My favorite question to ask someone is “How are you?”
I think it’s a powerful question, and in theater, you can ask every audience member by engaging them. They can reflect on what’s on stage and how they themselves are doing. Hopefully, you can make them think about things in a different way or brighten their day, at least for a couple of hours. I really love that art has that power. How did you get involved in the administrative side? Duuing my junior year at Bradley, I took a course on theatrical producing. Over spring break, we had an assignment to interview a theater administrative professional. I actually spoke with someone from STAGES for the project. The experience really opened my eyes to this whole other side of theater. Most people know about onstage and backstage work, but there are so many amazing people working off stage and applying their business acumen to marketing, fundraising and the box office. I got an internship opportunity working with the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, and after graduation, I became an intern at STAGES. Now, I’m celebrating 10 years with the company. The move to executive producer is kind of like the ultimate anniversary present.
What do you enjoy about working in theater? The people. I work with some of the greatest people I’ve ever met. There’s the STAGES staff, but also the larger theatrical community in St. Louis. I consider myself lucky to be amongst that group. It also extends to the audience that comes to our shows. One of the most beautiful and fulfilling sights is watching people take in and appreciate a production you’ve worked on. One of my professors once told me that theater is a hard business, so if you can imagine yourself working in another industry, you should seriously consider pursuing it. There is nothing else I can see myself doing.

resident and owner Amanda Alejandro started The Realty Shop in 2018 with a focus on the overall success of agents and clients alike, ensuring a culture of support and success for all. As an award-winning agent and now owner with more than 15 years of experience, Alejandro was frustrated by the holes left by the fractures and inconsistency in real estate models found within the industry. She had a vision for a different kind of company—one where service-focused advocacy is backed by local expertise and where fully integrated technology and innovation are leveraged to maximize agent success and client satisfaction.“Idesigned
The Realty Shop intentionally to go against the grain—against the fractures of the flat-fee company model as well as the traditional brokerage,” Alejandro says. “Too often the focus is on the brokerage’s bottom line. Our focus is on systems, tools and services that work for each customer’s bottom line and create an exceptional experience during their large-scale purchases and sales.” She adds, “Real estate has one of the highest fail-out rates of any profession due to many brokerages not providing a culture of service-led sales. I wanted to create an environment for people to thrive and remain true to our integrity and advocacy in all things. I took everything that I didn’t want or like in traditional models and fixed the fracture by focusing our north star on all things service and support when creating this company, and the results demonstrate the success of our model.”
The Realty Shop prides itself on being a one-stop resource for not only clients, but also for its team of agents, providing them with the resources, training and mentorship needed to make their careers a success. “We pride ourselves in providing each agent-advocate the tools to take their real estate career to the next level— allowing them to truly show their love for service and be successful in the amazing career field of real estate,” Alejandro says.

This unique approach has helped grow The Realty Shop from a small firm to ranking among the top brokerages in both the St. Louis market as well as the state of Missouri in just a few years. The investment the company makes in each staff member promotes incredible client relationships and outstanding achievements. With an atmosphere of continued knowledge and growth with a robust mentorship program focused on one-on-one agent learning, agents are trained in all aspects of the real estate transition including both the buy and sale advocacy processes to ensure their knowledge and expertise meet client needs and demand, leading to a five-star experience with trusted real estate experts.

We’ll be holding them on Wednesday evenings from Nov. 30 to Dec. 14 to celebrate the holiday season, and we’ve got great prizes planned, including tickets to Elf the Musical.”
Visitors can shop other local businesses like Across The Board Games, Chesterfield Baseball Cards, Imagine That Boutique, Pure Perfection Candles, Riviera Leather & Luggage, Snow Factory, Sole Cave and Watch Technicians. This fall, West County Center also will welcome locally owned retailers Mark Jenkins Footwear and Fan Cave, a sports memorabilia store owned by Rebecca and Ryan Houston. “Making the move to West County Center was a no-brainer for us,” Ryan says. “When looking for a new location, it really stood out. It’s not only a mall, but also a destination.”

The anniversary giveaways are just one reason to visit West County Center this fall. The shopping center also is welcoming exciting new tenants, including locally owned streetwear brand Arch Apparel. In 2019, the company held a pop-up at West County Center, and following the success of that event, it’s now looking forward to establishing its fourth brick-and-mortar store at the mall. “We are beyond excited to open Arch Apparel’s newest location at West County Center in early October,” owner and CEO Chelsea Shepherd says. “We can’t wait to bring this store to life and look forward to providing our uniquely designed tees, hoodies, hats and accessories to both current and new customers this fall.”
To provide more opportunities to local companies, West County Center launched a new short-term leasing opportunity for local food operators called the Pop-Up Eatery. Businesses can rent the space and are given access to all of its equipment and appliances, as well as enjoying the higher visibility the shopping center offers. “We recently had our first tenant, Yogi Donuts,” Phillips says. “West County Center is part of the St. Louis community, so it is important that we support local businesses. Our goal is to help them be successful here among national retailers.” & MARKET STORE SALES MANAGER

The interior is on par with luxury vehicles from European and Japanese manufacturers, offering rich leather; heated, cooled and massaging front seats; power tilt and telescoping heated steering wheel; roomy heated rear seats with reclining backs and their own ventilation controls; panoramic sunroof; killer sound system; and a program where you input your height and weight to adjust the driver’s seat to accommodate you—it didn’t work for me, but it was interesting to see what the computer thought I would like. Rear cargo space is plentiful, and a third row seat is optional on certain trim levels. Technology is great for making travel more comfortable and luxurious, but its best use is to enhance vehicle safety, and the GV80 employs all of the latest to do its best to insure passenger safety. Among the highlights are forward collision avoidance assist, blind spot collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, intelligent speed limit assist, front and rear parking distance warning and smart parking assist, just to name a few.

DRIVENGENESISGV80
by robert w. paster WANT TO SEE HOW FAR THE AUTO INDUSTRY HAS COME 20 years or so, the Genesis GV80 is a poster child for new. Manufactured by the new high line offering from Hyundai, the SUV offers all of the latest luxury technology that make driving both safer and more comfortable. The first clue that the GV80 represents the future comes with the first look, which reveals a sharp, angular and very modern looking SUV. Inside the cabin is thoroughly modern as well, with a configurable screen to display the gauges and a large touchscreen atop the dash that also can be operated with a rotary knob between the front seats. Just be careful you’re turning the rotary control for the screen and not the one for the transmission selection or drive mode. The floating center console looks great and is very functional, both for the controls it hosts and to provide some extra storage beneath it. Independent ventilation controls at the top of the center console are most welcome with simple dual rotary knobs for the automatic dual climate control system with a small screen to choose air flow direction and fan speed.
Driving the GV80 is a pleasure as well. With the 300 horsepower, 4-cylinder turbo engine, power delivery is smooth, the ride is very comfortable, and the steering is a bit overboosted at low speed but, in sport mode, tightens up nicely as speed increases. It would be a great highway cruiser. Brakes are good, with moderate pedal feel, but you can feel that they are having to slow down a large vehicle. A great feature uses a camera to display a view of what’s to your left or right when you engage the consequent turn signal. This pretty much eliminates the blind spot and ensures that you can see if something or someone is next to your vehicle before you turn. The feature that turns off the engine at a stop can cause a little shudder, but restarts are pretty smooth. For the price, the GV80 includes a heck of a lot of utility, luxury and safety commensurate with SUVs costing thousands, if not tens of thousands dollars more. “The GV80 doesn’t spare safety for performance,” says Justin Young, sales associate at Napleton Hyundai/Genesis in Hazelwood. “You can go all terrain or sporty with all of the safety features engaged. Junction crossing and turning are the coolest aspects; they prevent intersection accidents.” &

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 3,500 sleep-related infant deaths in the U.S. annually. Most are caused by sudden infant death syndrome or accidental suffocation or strangulation. A safe sleep environment can help reduce the risk of both.

• Always place your baby on their back for sleep, including naps: If your baby rolls onto their stomach, you do not need to keep turning them back. Just make sure there is no bedding around them that could obstruct their airways.
• Cradle Cap: The common condition refers to scaliness and redness that develops on a baby’s scalp. Its exact cause is unknown, but some experts think it might be related to hormonal changes in the mother during pregnancy that stimulate the infant’s oil glands. To treat cradle cap, wash your baby’s hair with mild baby shampoo and soft brush it to remove the scales. There are medicated shampoos that can loosen the scales more quickly, but they should only be used after consulting your pediatrician.
CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY IF YOUR BABY… … won’t wake up, … isn’t moving or appears very weak. … makes new moaning or grunting noises with each breath. … has a bluish mouth, tongue or face.
• Keep the baby’s sleep surface in your room, but do not bed share: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend bed sharing with babies, including between twins and other multiples. It’s also important to avoid sleeping with your infant in other places, such as a couch or chair, as it increases the chance for sleep-related infant death.
It can be difficult to tell when a baby is ill, especially if you’ve just brought home a newborn. You may not know what behavior is normal yet, and signs of illness can be subtle. Here are some symptoms to look out for when determining whether an infant is sick.
The tiniest members of our families often need the most care to keep them safe. September is National Baby Safety Month, so we’re looking at some common precautions new parents can take to make sure new babies are happy and healthy. safe sleep
• Use a firm, flat sleep surface: The surface should not indent when your baby is lying on it, and any surface that inclines more than 10 degrees is not safe for sleeping. If your baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller, swing or elsewhere, move them to a safe sleeping surface as soon as possibe.
bathing & skin care
• Bathtime: Babies don’t sweat much or get dirty enough to need a full bath every day. The AAP recommends three baths a week for their first year. Until the umbilical cord falls off (usually after one or two weeks), you should only give your infant sponge baths. When your baby is ready for a regular bath, use an infant tub or sink to wash them. While washing, keep everything you need within arm’s reach, so you can keep a hand on your baby at all times. If you forgot something or need to step away from the tub for any reason, take the baby with you.

• Keep soft bedding like blankets, pillows, bumper pads and toys out of the baby’s sleep area: These items increase the risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation. If you are worried about the baby being cold, you can layer their clothing. As a general rule, dress your baby in only one more layer than you’re wearing.

• Nails: Infant’s nails need to be trimmed or filed at least once a week to prevent scratches. Mittens can be used for protection, but it’s also important to allow babies to freely explore with their hands as they develop. Try to trim or file your baby’s nails while they are asleep, so you don’t have to contend with a moving target. To avoid cutting the finger or toe, push down on the fingertip so you can get the clipper or scissors on both sides of the nail. Make sure you file off any sharp or jagged edges.

FALL FABRICS
Creating a natural look for your home doesn’t have to be drastic or focused around furniture pieces. Adding even the simplest of home decor and accessories can bring natural materials into your space and create an instant upgrade. Biophilic design uses plants, natural lighting and airy spaces to establish a visual connection to nature. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, incorporating faux florals and branches into your space is a simple way to cultivate a strong visual connection to nature in your home, and using faux greenery in shades like burgundy or terracotta in the fall can imitate the season’s natural changing colors. Using natural fabrics and textures in your home accents can serve as another quick-and-easy update; think jute rugs, cane baskets, woven throw blankets and rattan accent tables.
PRONOUNCED PATTERNS
We know how significant it is to be able to cozy up with the ones you love and spend time together. People gathering in your home again has taken on new meaning, and it is more important than ever to create a space perfect for making those moments together special. The textile trends for fall 2022 are all about introducing tranquility, serenity and comfort into your space through a simple return to nature-inspired colors, textures and decor.
Cooler months are coming, and there’s no better way to bring warmth into your home than with a color palette of soft neutrals, earth tones and a collection of shades straight from nature. Warm beiges, browns, creams and greens are on the rise. These hues have a calming, comforting effect and compliment the use of other natural materials and interior design elements such as wood and greenery. Terracottas and rusts, as well as rich wood tones, are also increasing in popularity as part of warmer colorways appearing frequently in cabinetry, flooring and furniture pieces alike. Modernized, or “muddy,” primary colors—such as dark reds and muted blues—maintain a natural look while reflecting the season’s changing light through deep, shadowy undertones. These muddied colors create a warm, intimate space that encapsulates the relaxed and inviting feelings of fall.
Using all of these warm neutrals to incorporate nature into your space doesn’t have to be boring, even if you are someone who loves a punch of color and pattern. Floral patterns found on wallpaper and rugs create an unmissable vivid connection to the more eye-catching elements found in nature while allowing you to bring color into your space. &

Furniture pieces with timeless, classic fabrics often make a return during the fall season to help add softness and an earthy texture to your space. Typically made of cotton, bouclé is the perfect mix of cozy and durable. The fabric is incredibly resistant to stains, can be cleaned quickly by using a water-free solvent and is resilient against everyday wear. Its “nubby,” textured appearance is highly tactile and adds a plush, modern visual interest to any room. Another popular textile is shearling. Frequently referred to as “teddy bear material,” it is softer and less textured than the nubby bouclé and can be easily cleaned. When paired with natural materials such as wood tones and metal, these fabrics become elevated. Combining the two adds beautiful depth and dimension to the fabrics. Corduroy is making a comeback, and not just in fashion, but also with upholstery channeling—when fabrics feature equally-spaced, vertical or horizontal channels for a plush visual effect. Corduroy lends itself well to a fall-inspired design. Its soft structure and channeled texture make it a compelling choice for use on sofas, chairs and even throw pillows. Other natural fabrics, such as linen, velvet, hides, wool and wood, can be used in your home to establish an organic, understated connection to nature.

DEAR HOMEWORK, Help! We have installed a new black front door and established new landscaping, but we feel like the second story exterior needs something. We have thought about black shutters, but there isn’t enough room at the corners. Should we change the window casing color to black or dark gray? Any recommendations are Sincerely, welcome.

DEAR REWRITE THE SECOND STORY, I see what you mean and would like to suggest a number of trim options to help finish the look of your second floor. My first step would be to add a wide white band between the brick and siding, which then becomes part of a new, more elaborate front door case. This new casing then reaches up to connect with some more detailed trim around the central window. These additions help fill up the empty siding areas and lend a more architectural feel. The other four upper windows get the same crown mold top piece as the central one and also look longer due to the addition of flower boxes with small brackets. Larger coach lamps and porch urns helpfully add notes of elegance.Yournew landscape works well—but don’t let the bushes grow any taller. They are at the perfect height already. I now see a more balanced and complete facade that reads more the way you were hoping. Thanks for asking, HOMEWORK & DOERNER, PARTNER OF THE GROUP. FOREST PARK: Larger than New York City’s Central Park, this 1,300-acre crown jewel of the StL offers almost anything you could want from a park. It has miles of walking/running/biking trails, playing fields, a golf course, restaurant with paddle boats and canoes, and countless cultural gems like the Saint Louis Zoo, The Muny. the Jewel Box and art and history museums.
KIENER PLAZA: Part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the park sits across from the Old Courthouse and includes the historical building’s oval lawn and event space. It also features a children’s playground, a splash pad and the The Olympic Runner statue and fountain, which was created in honor of the park’s namesake, Harry J. Kiener, who served on the U.S. track team at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics.

Your family spends a lot of time in the kitchen, so it should regularly get the declutter treatment. During the holidays baking, cooking and entertaining become more common, so early fall is a great time to clean out your pantry, freezer and fridge. If you have food itemsthat are still good to eat but you are unlikely to use, plan on making a donation to a food pantry.
While it may seem counterintuitive, placing furniture against the wall can make your living spaces look small and messy. Instead, pull the furniture away from the wall and towards the center of the room. It creates more intimate, cozy conversation places, adds a better sense of balance and eliminates awkward dead spaces in the middle of rooms. Do Help the Kids
Getting the kids more organized will help make your life a little easier. Simplify your before school routine by making sure essentials like clothes, backpacks and sports gear can be accessed without adult assistance. For schoolwork, make sure there is a distraction-free study area. To create more storage space, clean out closets and drawers to get rid of clothing they have outgrown.
Don’t Overcrowd Open Storage
Open shelving is a great way to organize and show off your books and collectibles. However, if you add too much to your shelves, it’s going to look cluttered and messy—no matter how carefully you’re attempting to curate things. Achieve a clean look by editing down arrangements so they include more open space, and stash away electronics with cables inside cabinets and baskets to make things look less crowded.
Do Get Ready for the Holidays
Now is a good time to get a head start on the holidays so you can avoid stress down the line. Move holiday decorations so they are more accessible and clear out space for gift and wrapping supplies you will amass. Start cleaning and decluttering guests rooms so they are ready for visitors in the coming months.
Don’t Forget About Food Storage Areas

Your garage gets a lot of use in spring and summer, but with colder weather approaching, the focus should be on parking space and storage. Clear any floor clutter and discard broken or unused tools. Slatwall storage panels and overhead racks can be used to organize items you’ll be using less in winter like yard tools, sports equipment and patio furniture.
