Editor’s Letter In October as we put the clocks back and the days grow shorter this edition inevitably has an autumnal flavour. With the harvest safely gathered, our Food Feature looks at jam making, rhubarb, Maud Heath Competition, British Food fortnight - all finished off with recipes for Baked Apples and Onion Soup! However, while there are a few weeks of good weather left, this half term why not read our tips on page 64 and take the kids or grandkids out for the day. Head off to Westonbirt Aboretum to see the beautiful autumn colours of the Acer Glades, and if they fancy a game of conkers there are some good tips on page 53 on the best ones to use. Read about Greatwood and the work they do with ex-racehorses, Calne Camera Club, Ballroom Dancing, Yatton Keynell and an interview with Daniel Radcliffe. Finally we feature an article about bats – just in time for Halloween! Until next time . . .

FREE WILL WRITING SCHEME available during October Awdry Bailey and Douglas, Solicitors support Swan Advocacy

Volunteers needed to support people in Wiltshire SWAN ADVOCACY is seeking to recruit and train volunteers who have the passion and skills to make a real difference through our ‘Dementia Advocacy Project’. The Project, funded by the Lloyds Bank Foundation, will support individuals experiencing memory loss or in the early stages of dementia living in some of the most isolated, rural areas of Wiltshire. Project lead, Sarah Ride, says “The aim of the project is to ensure that individuals are supported to raise concerns about their health, access the services that they want and are able to make informed choices about their future. We will initially be offering the service in Marlborough, Pewsey, Durrington, Upavon, Tisbury and Dinton as well as the surrounding villages and hamlets. We are keen to hear from people living in and around those areas who may be interested in undertaking the training to become volunteer advocates.” Swan Advocacy offers comprehensive induction and ongoing nationally recognised advocacy training in exchange for a commitment for our volunteers to support clients on a flexible basis as the need arises and to participate in the supervision and support provided. Whilst experience is not required we are looking for people who are good communicators and have a positive attitude towards old age, illness or disability. If you are interested in volunteering, or in accessing the service, contact Swan Advocacy on 01722 341851. www.swanadvocacy.org.uk

What’s On

The new light installation Rhythm and blues by artist Bruce Munro 2014. Photographer Mark Pickthall

Bruce Munro illuminates the revitalised Wiltshire Music Centre

A

S the doors open for the Autumn / Winter season at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon audiences will notice quite a few changes. This is the first season programmed entirely by new artistic director, James Slater. Returning visitors will immediately notice the benefits of the recent £371k Arts Council England grant, which has allowed for significant upgrading of the 16 year old building over the summer. Physical improvements to the foyer and café-bar area will ensure a much more comfortable and appealing visitor experience, and enhanced technical equipment and acoustic treatment in the auditorium will enable an even better quality sound experience for all types of live music. The change which will stop people in their tracks, though, is the stunning new light sculpture, ‘Rhythm and Blues’ created by internationally acclaimed British artist, Bruce Munro. Weaving its way in serpentine fashion across the ceiling of the foyer of Wiltshire Music Centre this graceful artwork is the artist’s response to the Centre as a hub of musical commitment and creativity. The suspended structure comprises 405 strands of illuminated fiber optic, and aluminum diffusers. The artwork, reflected in three mirrors, at once expands, illuminates and draws the eye inviting consideration and contemplation.

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

Bruce Munro: “It is a privilege to have been invited to create a piece at the Wiltshire Music Centre, and its presence here is testimony to the amazing work of the Centre team and its significance as a venue showing first class music in Wiltshire and the surrounding counties. For me it is always wonderful to have the opportunity to create a permanent piece especially in a place that is close to home and where it can be enjoyed as part of a broader cultural experience.” Munro is noted for his immersive site-specific installations that employ light to evoke emotional response, often in an outdoor context and on a monumental scale. His practice is a mediation of memory and of moments of shared human connection, and incorporates a fascination for components and an inventive urge for reuse. Clare Jack, Executive Director of Wiltshire Music Centre: “The physical improvements have made a great difference, and Bruce Munro’s light installation is truly inspirational. With a fantastic programme of music ahead of us we are welcoming the new season with a great sense of optimism and excitement.” Further details about Wiltshire Music Centre, and its full Autumn / Winter concert programme, at: www.wiltshiremusic.org.uk. What’s On

The Cool Web:

Both Bathbased, Jools Scott has written the music for three short films and is just about to embark on his first feature film.

A Robert Graves Oratorio World Premiere – Bath Abbey, Thursday 30 October at 7.30pm Accompanied by The Edith Cavell Story The Cool Web is an oratorio for orchestra, choir and soloist created to commemorate the centenary of The Great War. This new work, composed by musician Jools Scott with a libretto compiled by Sue Curtis based on the work of Robert Graves, will have its premiere at Bath Abbey on Thursday 30th October at 7.30pm. The internationally acclaimed Endymion Ensemble will be joined by Philharmonia Voices in a performance conducted by Robin O’Neill. Baritone Edward Grint will sing the role of the young Robert Graves, accompanied by a children’s choir selected from Bath schools. Robert Graves is one of the greatest English poets of the twentieth century, and author of perhaps the most famous memoir of WW1: Goodbye to All That. He enlisted straight from school at the age of 19 in August 1914, and fought in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 where he received the serious injury which ended his active service. He survived the war and went on to write, among many other

works, I Claudius and The White Goddess as well as a substantial catalogue of acclaimed poetry. Graves died in 1985. The inspiration to create The Cool Web came from Jools and Sue’s desire to pay tribute to the young men who made such extraordinary sacrifices a century ago: the kind of sacrifice which is utterly incomprehensible to those living today. Leonard Pearcey’s introduction to William Graves, who subsequently gave his enthusiastic permission to use his father’s poetry, and Sue’s extensive knowledge of Graves’ work, made the idea a reality. The oratorio will be followed by a performance of The Edith Cavell Story by Bath-based broadcaster and writer, Leonard Pearcey, and the actor Sophie Ward. Adapted from Diana Souhami’s biography of the British nurse, this is the story of the nurse who is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without distinction and helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from Germanoccupied Belgium. For this, having been betrayed by a collaborator, she was arrested, court-martialed, found guilty of treason and shot in October 1915. Her execution by a German firing squad received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage at the time. Today there are memorial to Edith Cavell across the world, from Norwich Cathedral to Trafalgar Square; in Brussels, Paris, and Melbourne, Australia. Proceeds from this evening will support the Cavell Nurses’ Trust. These two diverse reflections on the ‘first modern war’ promise to provide an intensely moving experience, which will resonate with those of all ages and experiences: The Cool Web is a major milestone in the City of Bath’s commemoration of the First World War. Tickets for The Cool Web are available now from Bath Box Office: www.bathboxoffice.org. uk, boxoffice@bathfestivals.org.uk or tel 01225 463362 priced £10 to £30.

Fundraisers preparing for China Trek raise £40,000

L

AST month, 14 incredible individuals from Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire will take the first of thousands of steps as part of a six day trekking challenge along the Great Wall of China. In the months leading up to departure, each trekker has worked extremely hard to raise vital funds for The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. From cake sales, band nights, clothes swaps to raffles and a very apt Panda naming game; they have raised a combined total surpassing £40,000 towards the new Cancer Centre at the RUH in Bath – and they’re still going! Each of the fourteen trekkers have their own personal reasons and stories for taking part, but all have one thing in common – a remarkable focus to support their local hospital and help transform cancer services for the future. The trekking team includes: Rebecca Brooks, Karen Burge, Russell Corbett, Jacqueline Cousins, Dr Dorothy Goddard, Dr Hugh Goddard, Sarah Leybourne, Paula Richards, Christine Walters, Sue Gilby, Sally Smith, Patricia Symons, Alex Whiting and Biddy Walcot.

16

Among the fourteen includes five members of RUH staff, including Dr Dorothy Goddard who has recently retired as the Director of the Breast Unit to become Associate Medical Director for Cancer Strategy at the hospital and sees on a daily basis just how important a new Cancer Centre is, not only for current and future patients, but also clinicians and staff members alike. The team will walk up to seven hours a day as part of the six days of tough trekking, and will be challenged early on in their journey with a 200 step near-vertical ascent up ‘Heavens Ladder’ to the top of a mountain. Whilst some portions of the Wall have been extensively renovated there are many parts which have been left virtually untouched by modern man, taking the trekkers out of their comfort zones to experience it all! Passing though watch towers, traditional farming villages, valleys and mountains this ancient wonder has already lead the group to some amazing fundraising achievements before they even set foot in China. The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising £8.5 million towards a pioneering Cancer Centre at The Royal United Hospital in Bath. This new Centre will transform the care for patients and their families affected by this life changing diagnosis. The hospital is planning on replacing its outdated 1940s cancer facilities, with a state-of-the-art £23.5 million Cancer Centre (66% NHS funded / 33% charitable funds) fit for purpose that will bring treatment ‘under one roof’.

This new Cancer Centre will take inspiration and draw on experiences from the RUH’s most recently completed development project, The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care (NICU) which has won 10 National & International Awards since its opening in July 2011. It will take a similar holistic approach, as with NICU, and provide a soothing and relaxing environment for patients and their families that will transform the patient experience. Laura Pearce, Events Fundraiser for the Appeal comments: “We are so proud and grateful to all of our China trekkers and those who have supported them so far. What a load of Rhubarb! C

AST your mind back to the fabulous sunny months of April, May and June, when the rhubarb plants were producing delicious stems of juicy fruit, perfectly ripe for crumble. Each of the stems (so technically not a fruit at all) which blushed with the colour of pink champagne or deep raspberry sorbet depending on the variety, could easily be torn from the plant, topped and tailed and then either used immediately or blanched and frozen for later. Rhubarb freezes very well, and lasts for around a year, in fact I made a crumble in April this year using last years frozen harvest. Chopped into 1cm pieces, it can be placed directly into freezer bags, but to retain its colour should be blanched for around 1 minute in boiling water. Allow to cool and dry before freezing. To revive, boil in a little fresh orange juice, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and sugar to taste before allowing to cool. It’s a versatile crop and makes great jam, compote and crumble, and tastes delicious when made as above and served with crème fraîche.

October is the perfect time to plant rhubarb if you haven’t got any at the moment and would like a patch of your own. It’s quite un-fussy and will grow in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moisture retentive. Add well-rotted manure to the planting hole and mulch the plant with a ‘doughnut’ shape of manure about 50cm deep in spring. Give the plant a feed with ‘blood, fish and bone’ in March and watch it grow! It’s an easy perennial plant, which produces giant leaves and is pretty resistant to pests, although hungry mammals might feast on the crowns in early spring when food is scarce. Early rhubarb can be ‘forced’ inside up-turned dust bins, but only do this with established plants. Place a black bin (or terracotta rhubarb forcing jar if you’re a pro) over the plant in early spring, and then enjoy the small, tender and sweet stems as they develop and search for the light. Grown commercially in large dark sheds in the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle - between Wakefield, Leeds and Morley - this wonderful vegetable (classed as a fruit for tax reasons) can also be divided up this month if you have a large overgrown patch.

by Lee Bestall

Rhubarb originates from the colder parts of China and its popularity is fairly recent in historical terms, becoming more widely eaten as sugar became less expensive. The leaves are toxic and so too are the stems later on in the year, because the toxic acids move down the stems from the leaves and into the crown as the winter temperatures cool. British Food Fortnight 20th September – 5th October By Louise Addison NAME a British dish. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding? Shepherds’ pie? Spotted dick?

i

Now ask your child to name a traditional British dish. Can they? In recent years we have become a multi-cultural society and we’ve happily adopted pasta from Italy, curry, from India and noodles from China. While we should be proud of the fact that we’ve welcomed and assimilated these new tastes, we seem to be in danger of forgetting or ignoring our own national and regional dishes. It’s a sad fact that many British school children (and almost as many adults)have little or no knowledge of our culinary heritage in spite of it being rich and varied.

British Food Fortnight exists to put British food firmly in the spotlight. It aims to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes. To this end it takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. This year it also has the additional aim of helping our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food. The theme is Bringing Home the Harvest. Many schools are participating with the aim of teaching children how to prepare simple meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients. High street shops, farm shops and delicatessens will also be joining in, stocking British produce and running tasting sessions and cookery demonstrations. There will be special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs.

Spicy Baked Apples with Walnuts

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Ingredients: 4 large Golden Delicious Apples 1 splash Lemon Juice 85g Walnuts, halved 1 tbsp Raisins 1 tbsp Soft Light Brown Sugar 25g Butter ¼ tsp Ground Cinnamon Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C /Gas 4. Carefully cut a 2.5cm (1in) slice from the top of each apple and set aside. Using an apple corer or a small, sharp knife, remove the core from each apple. Place the walnuts, raisins, sugar, butter, and cinnamon into a food processor and pulse several times, to produce a coarse, textured mixture. If you don’t have a food processor, chop the walnuts roughly and mix thoroughly with the other ingredients. Stuff each apple cavity with the mixture and replace the reserved tops. Arrange the apples in a shallow, ovenproof dish so that they’re upright, and then fill the pan 1cm (1/2in) deep with water. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes, or until the flesh is tender when pierced with the point of a knife. When slightly cooled, carefully remove the apples from the baking dish, transfer them to serving plates, and serve hot with crème fraiche or ice cream.

Cheesy Onion Soup

As the clocks go back and the nights draw in take comfort in our onion soup, topped with crunchy bread and bubbling cheese

Method:

Serves: 2 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Ingredients: 12oz / 350g onions (can use a mixture of brown, red and white or all the same variety) Butter for frying 11/2 tsp Demerara sugar 2 tsp dark soy sauce

Heat the butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the onions and sugar and fry gently over a low heat for 10-20 minutes, stirring frequently. The sugar will caramelise to a nice golden brown coating on the onions. Be careful not to let it stick and burn though, especially towards the end. Add the stock and soy sauce, and season to taste with salt and black pepper. Put a lid on the pan and simmer for approximately 30 minutes until the onions are soft and starting to disintegrate. Grate or thinly slice the cheese. Divide the soup between two heatproof bowls.

1 pint stock (chicken stock is lighter, beef stock heartier) 2 thick slices lightly toasted bread 2oz / 50g cheddar or Gruyere cheese TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068

Peel and thinly slice the onions.

Float a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl of soup, and top with sliced or grated cheese. Grill for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling (which is why you have to use heatproof soup bowls!) Serve with more crusty fresh bread.

Jam Today… A

UTUMN is the perfect time to start preserving. You can use home grown fruits or those you’ve foraged amongst the hedgerows. Preserving is relatively easy. Once the fruit has been picked, washed and prepared, you just need some simple equipment to turn it into marvellous produce.

You can get lots of advice from your local cook shop on what’s required, but some basics are: a large heavy based saucepan, spoons and funnels, a sugar thermometer, containers and jars, lids and labels. The concept of preserving foods has been around since the earliest humans. To survive, ancient man had to harness nature. In frozen climates he froze seal meat on the ice. In tropical climates he dried foods in the sun. Food by its nature begins to spoil the moment it is harvested. So the ability to preserve food enabled ancient man to make roots, and live in one place and form a community. Preservation with the use of honey or sugar was well known to the earliest cultures. It was commonplace for fruits to be kept in honey. In ancient Greece quince was mixed with honey, dried and packed tightly into jars. The Romans cooked the quince and honey producing a solid texture. As there’s not enough sunlight in Northern climates to successfully dry fruits, housewives learned to make preserves, heating the fruit with sugar - the method we know today. Whilst there is no longer a pressing survival reason for preserving, it can be very rewarding. As well as providing delightful food and drink for you to consume, you could also make your preserved

26

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

fruits into lovely Christmas gifts. There are many possibilities including jams and marmalades, chutneys and pickles, and beverages such as sloe gin. Many establishments run evening classes which can help you create these and many other fabulous recipes, such as fruit butter or fruit cheese. When preserving, you should use fruits that are sun ripened, as the process will not improve green tasteless fruit. Using fruit that has a high acid content is recommended, as it less likely to harbour bacteria. When filling jars, you should ensure they are hot as temperature drops will increase the likelihood of bacteria forming. For the same reason, always cover your jars straight away and when the jars are cooled, you should recheck the seals and tighten lids to prevent any air entering and causing mould to form. Or you could use a waxed disc of paper and cellophane to act as a cover. Keep your preserves in a cool, dark, dry place. Chutneys and pickles can last for around a year, and fruit liqueurs and fruits in alcohol up to two years. Once opened, store in the fridge and use quickly.

Kay Mawson, the mother of sufferer Andrew, describes School Phobia as the ‘fear of school,’ which brings on debilitating symptoms. She says that to avoid the fear, children exhibit behaviour often called School Refusal. For her son the causes were a sensation of feeling trapped and out of control in school and therefore feeling insecure and unsafe. He also suffered from separation anxiety resulting from being apart and out of contact with those he cared about, and being fearful that something might happen to them. Kay feels it is important to raise awareness of the condition because it is commonly misunderstood, and often remains untreated. Many parents become distressed at finding themselves struggling with courts, schools and truancy issues. Last years Netmums and the TV programme This Morning carried out a poll of 1,054 parents. This suggested that one in five British children suffer from School Phobia but only half of parents are aware of it. Children aged five to six and 10 and 11 were the most frequent suffers. Common behaviours include faking illness to try to avoid school, or going for registration and then leaving. Many sufferers have temper tantrums and scream and kick if forced to attend. Forty six percent of those referred to in the study also became ill with genuine stress related conditions such as headaches and stomach aches. Many had difficulty sleeping.

School Phobia by Susan Brookes-Morris

T

HERE seems to be growing evidence of a condition known as School Phobia. It was first recorded in America around 1941, then gained further attention in the 1960’s, and has become more commonly diagnosed in recent years.

38

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

Whilst in some cases the factors were not related to specific instances at school, the parents of other sufferers felt the condition had been triggered by bullying, under-performance or a general sense of being overwhelmed by school expectations. The study suggests that many parents struggled to get help; indeed some experts claim that parental behaviour has sometimes made cases worse. Some parents have been able to get their children medically diagnosed with School Phobia, and pupils in the UK have obtained places at special units for anxious and school phobic children. There remain differences of opinion on the best way to handle the condition. Some feel that getting the child into school is crucial even if it involves parental accompaniment and perhaps arranging special acclimatisation sessions. Some parents have found that moving their child to a more supportive school helped tremendously, while others believe that home schooling provides the solution. Kay Mawson advises parents to research all of the available options and discuss them with their child and perhaps an educational psychologist. That way there is a consensus on the best way to move forward, though arrangements should be reviewed on a regular basis.

Health Mattters

The Next Generation

O

KAY, dear readers, so it is this time of the year when I normally nag you all to pop to your local Surgery/Pharmacy/Supermarket to get your flu jabs. No-one wants to contract the flu as it’s debilitating for us all and potentially life threatening for the elderly and at risk patients - so I feel confident that you are all getting vaccinated to save yourself from having to miss this lovely Indian summer we have been enjoying. Great! That’s that job done - I do hate to nag. Regular readers will know that I am a little bit precious when it comes to my Surgery. I am like a proud parent, pleased as punch at our achievements and the high level of service we strive to provide for our patients. I can take little credit for this though as it is due to the hard work and dedication of our team of Drs, Nurses, Receptionists and back office staff who I am lucky enough to work with. What makes a happy team? Well I firmly believe that people are happier in the workplace when they feel appreciated and supported. Recognising personal achievements and encouraging development are, in my opinion, key to this. Training and career development is something which we actively promote here at the Surgery, from in-house and peer training to achieving nationally recognised qualifications. Within the NHS there is always the opportunity for career progression and most GP Surgeries are made up of people who

40

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

have a wealth of experience which is not necessarily gained from their current job role. Many of my colleagues have, in some way, worked their way through the NHS career ladder. Our nurses here at Beversbrook are ex midwives including our Lead Nurse Practitioner who has recently been promoted to recognise her newly obtained and well-earned practitioner and prescribing qualifications. I myself joined the Surgery as a Medical Secretary and many of our team have started as Receptionists or Apprentices and have gone on to fulfil roles such as Administrators, Note Summarisers and even Phlebotomists and Health Care Assistants within the Practice. I personally, take much reward in seeing individual staff members meet their full potential which is why, for the past five years, we have been involved in the Government Apprenticeship scheme. Typically, an Apprenticeship position here at the Practice is over the course of one year, with the option of staying on for a second year if it is mutually agreeable. Some of our key staff members have come through an Apprenticeship scheme including our current Practice Secretary and our Administration Assistant. Presently we employ four Apprentices here at Beversbrook, training in back office and reception functions. These individuals have all grown over the course of their employment, having the opportunity to gain training and work experience in all kinds of Practice responsibilities.

Health Matters Training starts from the moment the Apprentice comes through the door on such things as confidentiality, safeguarding, health and safety, infection control etc and we provide a whole team approach to encourage and nurture these young colleagues, with all permanent staff happy to train individuals on their own job roles if this is something which the Apprentice shows aptitude for. So for example, one individual at the moment is training in phlebotomy (taking blood) under the careful guidance of our Nursing Team. Another of our Apprentices is learning all about how to process and summarise patient records and our Second Year Apprentice has been concentrating on supervision and management. This demands a huge commitment from our current team who fit this training around their busy working schedules but the rewards are often worthwhile. Not only does a trained Apprentice provide another pair of hands supporting us to work as an efficient team, but we benefit from having young and enthusiastic staff members which boosts the morale of the whole Practice. Apprentices finish their first year with a National Vocational Qualification and a wealth of experience and skills which they can build upon to suit their own aspirations. We are currently recruiting for new Apprentices here at Beversbrook, as are several other GP Surgeries and businesses in the area. If you are a young person aged between 16 and 24 an Apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to get your first step on the career ladder. More information about the Apprenticeship scheme can be found on the Government Apprenticeship website www.apprenticeships.org.uk. We currently use the training provider First4skills and our Area Trainer, the lovely Jason Harrington-Parry, visits us regularly to provide support and guidance for our trainees to achieve their qualifications. First4skills have also helped some of our permanent staff members to achieve nationally recognised qualifications alongside our trainees and this has helped not only boost their confidence but also ensured that all Practice staff are provided with the opportunity to develop their career within the workplace. Next time you come to Beversbrook and see a happy smiling face behind the counter it might be one of my Apprentice colleagues. Please be patient if they can’t help you straight away and bear in mind that they are trainees. If you are not satisfied with the service you have received do let us know as this feedback is crucial to making sure all our staff, including our Apprentices, are provided with the opportunity to train and improve. Equally, if someone has gone out of their way to help and provide a good level of service don’t be afraid to say well done! We all need to hear it sometimes. So if you have read to the end of this article then well done! Have a cup of coffee and if you have booked your flu appointment then you get extra points - help yourself to a biscuit too!

Learn to Dance

LEARN TO . . .

Ballroom Dance by Claire Morgan

A

T the end of a long hot summer, the prospect of the impending autumn and winter can be depressing, so what better time to take up a new activity. With a new series of Strictly Come Dancing on our TV screens, many people may have considered taking up some kind of dancing, but dismissed it, either on grounds of age, fitness, or the possession of “Two Left Feet”. Speaking as an experienced dance teacher, none of these reasons are an excuse not to try what is, in my opinion, one of the most fabulous ways to spend one’s spare time. Ballroom dancing is one of the most approachable ways to learn to dance, for many people. At its most basic level, we teach you a series of simple steps, which you dance on a regular timing to a piece of music. It really is just as easy as that! What dance to choose? Most people would probably recognize a Waltz, perhaps the easiest dance to start with, but how about a lively Quickstep, guaranteed to get the heart pumping, or the timelessly elegant Slow Foxtrot (with its really cool music) or its easier variant the Social Foxtrot (really just walking with style!). The Tango, which has a fascinating history, is another dance which is simple to learn, but with a little experience can be taken to a whole new level. In its original form, we have the Argentine Tango, which is a completely different dance, but endlessly fascinating, and a great way of learning partnering skills.

to go out and spend a happy afternoon or evening at a local dance. Ballroom dancing is a fantabulous and fun way to increase fitness and flexibility, and to keep the old, and not-so-old, brain cells ticking over! It’s a lovely way to spend time with your partner, or with friends, and is also a great way to meet new people (we Ballroom dancers are very friendly folk), and it can offer a lifetime of pleasure. What’s not to like?

The Latin American dances offer a different style, and a variety of rhythms, from the playful Cha Cha Cha, the spirited Samba or high-octane Jive, a romantic Rumba or dramatic Paso Doble, or even a spot of retro Rock’n’Roll. There really is something for everyone, of all ages and musical tastes. You only have to learn a few steps, in a handful of different dances, and you’re equipped 44

Halloween History and Traditions by Susan Brookes-Morris

T

HE origins of Halloween are unclear but many believe it is over 200 years old and associated with ancient pagan festivals, which were held around the end of October. People believed that at this time of year, the spirits of dead people could come ‘alive’ and walk among the living. They thought that it was important to dress up in costumes when venturing outside, to avoid being harmed by the spirits. There are many traditional activities associated with Halloween. A common game is apple bobbing, sometimes known as apple ducking. Competitors - who have their hands tied behind their backs - use their teeth to try to catch apples which are floating in a container of water. Some say this reflects the way women accused of witchcraft were tried in the Middle Ages. They were tied to a chair and ducked repeatedly in a river or pond. If the woman drowned she was declared innocent but if she survived she was found guilty of witchcraft and burnt at the stake! Some aspects of modern Halloween celebrations, such as carving lanterns out of vegetables, originated long ago. Whilst we now commonly use pumpkins for this (because they are large and easy to carve), in the past turnips, beets and potatoes were used. Other more recent Halloween celebrations such as Trick or Treat have American origins, though one of the alternative names for 31 October: ‘Mischief Night,’ has its origins firmly in 18th Century Britain.

Halloween

Going Batty! When you think about bats what springs to mind? Do you imagine vampires or spooky haunted houses?

B

ATS are fascinating creatures. They make up just over a quarter of the UK’s mammal population and they are the only ones that can fly. Britain is host to eighteen native species plus occasional migrant visitors. Pipistrelles are the commonest British bats. They weigh just 5 grams (less than a £1 coin). Bat populations are under threat from predation, crime and loss of habitat so UK bats and their roosts are now protected by law. Many people who profess not to like bats cite their wings as the reason but bat wings are actually beautiful pieces of biomechanical engineering. Bat wings are constructed in a similar way to human hands, only with membrane of skin stretched between the elongated, delicate fingers. Bat bones are not hollow - unlike bird bones - but they are very slender and flexible. Because their wings are much thinner than bird wings they can manoeuvre more easily at speed. They are also more vulnerable to damage but tend to heal very quickly. 48

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

These unique creatures fly and feed in the dark. Across the world there are fruit and nectareating bats, and even real vampire bats which drink blood, but all UK bats live on insects. They find them using echolocation, producing a stream of high-pitched calls and listening to the returning echo. This provides a ‘picture’ of their surroundings. Although they can hear better than they can see, they are certainly not blind. In addition, their impressive navigational systems mean they are extremely unlikely to get caught in your hair! The old saying about bats in the belfry is a bit of a myth. In fact, bats rarely seek out church towers, preferring somewhere quiet, and less draughty. They favour houses, both old and new, and cause few problems as they come and go. They are neither noisy nor smelly and householders are usually unaware of their presence. If bats do set up home in your roof, their access must not be impeded. If you’d like to encourage these interesting little creatures to your garden you can buy or make specialist bat boxes to fix to outside of your home to encourage them to take up residence. Help, advice and general information on Britain’s bats is available at www. bats.org.uk.

Book Reviews 2 Spooky Books for Halloween by Kath Bennet & Willow Coby Fates intertwine as two young protégés must meet and compete on this unsuspecting stage. The ultimate bet will be decided after years of dedication and preparation.

The Night Circus By Erin Morgenstern

........................................................... “The circus arrives without warning … It is simply there when yesterday it was not”

S

o begins this adult fantasy novel. From the seductive opening you are drawn into the world of the circus. The mysterious circus owner, Prospero the Enchanter, otherwise known as Hector Bowen, is a magician and Le Cirque des Rêves is the greatest accomplishment of his career. Magic unfolds on every page as his circus and its assembled performers enchant and amaze its audience. Time moves differently in the circus, as the performers appear not to age. Acrobats perform without safety nets and the audience move from one spectacle to another, created by the illusionist who transforms tents on a whim. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068

Set in America and Europe in the late 1800s this novel oozes with an era that never quite existed. A steampunk retelling of the Victorian age that you will wish you could visit. The language is poetic and evocative and you will find yourself longing for the day when the circus arrives near you without warning. You too will want to wear a red scarf and join the rêveurs. WC

Northanger Abbey Val McDermid

.........................................................

T

hat’s not a typo in the title. This really is a version of Jane Austen’s classic novel, reworked by crime writer Val McDermid as part of The Austen Project, which aims to issue updated versions of all six Austen novels.

WWW. TOWNCRIERMAGAZINE.COM

I approached this with some trepidation, being a huge fan of both authors, but never having considered them in the same sentence before. From the first page I was hooked. This is a marvelous mix of the familiar and the new. Austen’s heroine, Catherine Morland, is brought fully into the twentyfirst century - now she prefers to be known as Cat, has a serious social media habit, and is enjoying the delights of the Edinburgh Festival. The original Catherine’s obsession with Gothic fiction, is translated into modern day Cat’s voracious consumption of vampire literature - meaning that she is prone to see the supernatural lurking around every shadowy corner, particularly when she finds herself with her new friends the Tilneys at Northanger Abbey. McDermid’s prose sparkles, with cleverly observed dialogue and constant refreshing twists on Austen’s plot and characters. Boorish John Thorpe and his shallow sister Bella, seem to belong perfectly in the modern day - indeed, readers may feel that they have met them on a number of occasions. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I still wanted to stay up late and finish the book - just like Cat/Catherine with their gothic romances, and just like I did the first time I read Austen’s Northanger Abbey. I can’t think of a higher compliment. KB

C nkers!

M

ost sources agree that the gloriously eccentric game of conkers began in England, but conkers is also played in North America, Canada, Ireland and Switzerland. Success in conkers relies on good equipment. Hence you need a good horse chestnut . The best are firm, uncracked and symmetrical. Drill through the centre and thread a shoelace through the hole, knotting it securely.

The aim is to smash your opponent’s conker with your own and if you achieve this, your conker becomes a one-er. From here it gets a bit more complicated. If it then smashes another one-er it becomes a two-er. If it then smashes a two-er it automatically becomes a four-er. If it then smashes a six-er it becomes a ten-er and so on. Still with me?

The official world conker championship is held annually in Ashton in Northamptonshire on the second Sunday in October. Contestants are not allowed to use their own conkers. They also dispense with the points rule mentioned earlier, and no-one is allowed to stamp on anyone else’s conkers, which surely takes some of the fun out of it. In recent years the Health and Safety police have banned conkers in schools up and down the land. This is a shame and perhaps we should campaign to get conkers back into playgrounds as part of our rightful heritage. By Tom Hancock

The rules of conkers are many and varied. I rather like the one which states that if you drop your conker your opponent can yell ‘stamps’ and crush your conker with his foot. If you yell ‘no stamp’ first, he’s not allowed to do this. Good luck with that one one in the heat of battle! Dense conkers are best. If yours sinks in a bucket of water it’s a good one. Less legitimately include baking your conker in a low oven, soaking it in vinegar or coating it in nail polish are all guaranteed to improve your chances of success in open competition.

OTSWOLD Wildlife Park is experiencing a baby boom of the cold blooded variety. The Reptile Section is awash with new births, including some of the smallest newborns in the entire collection. These include four Mangrove Snakes (bred for the first time at the Park), six Blood Pythons, three Crested Geckos, four Asian Giant Forest Scorpions and a multitude of Lyretail and Checkboard Cichlids.

Curator of Cotswold Wildlife Park, Jamie Craig, said: “The Keepers at the Park are delighted with the boom in births and hatchings in the Reptile House – it is a real achievement to breed some of these species and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Reptile Department in species that do not always get the same attention as the cute and cuddly!” Three Crested Gecko babies hatched on 10th July (pictured top left and right). Geckos are one of the most

diverse groups of Lizards on Earth and are an incredible example of animal engineering. The ribbed flesh on their toes enables them to scale vertical surfaces - even polished glass. Engineers with the US Department of Defence’s research project, DARPA, have been looking into creating ‘bioinspired’ gloves for soldiers based on the Gecko’s ribbed toes. Earlier this month, a new study published in the Journal of Applied Physics unravelled some of the complexity of how Geckos can turn their superlative stickiness on and off. This new research is helping scientists to develop technology to enable robots to climb walls or grab onto objects*. The new breeding pair of Mangrove Snakes have successfully produced young for the first time (one pictured left). Two yellow and black striped snakes hatched in June. These reptiles are brilliantly camouflaged in their brightly sunlit, leafy mangrove habitat, making them masters of disguise in the wild. The Park’s Blood Pythons also produced six young. The female coils around the clutch of eggs until they hatch. In the wild, the parents abandon the newborns as soon as they hatch, sometimes even earlier. An unexpected birth came from a new species to the collection - the Asian Giant Forest Scorpion. Keepers were pleasantly suprised when the female produced young just weeks after arriving at

WWW. TOWNCRIERMAGAZINE.COM

the Park. The young are born one by one after hatching and expelling the embryonic membrane. The brood is carried about on the mother’s back until the young have undergone at least one moult. Before the first moult, scorplings cannot survive naturally without the mother, since they depend on her for protection and to regulate their moisture levels. The size of the litter depends on the species and environmental factors and can range from two to over a hundred scorplings. The average litter consists of around eight scorplings. Scorpions were amongst the first animals to adapt to life on land 420 million years ago and have been found in many fossil records from the Carboniferous Period. Meanwhile, the Insect and Invertebrate House has seen multiple fish births of two species of Lake Tanganyika Cichlids. These Cichlids are found only in Lake Tanganyika, the second largest lake in the world. There are at least 250 species of Cichlid found in this lake and 98% are found nowhere else in the world. The Park’s Lyretail and Checkboard Cichlids have recently produced young. These fish are secretive shelter spawners. The fry are smaller than a grain of rice. The Lyretail Cichlid female typically lays between twenty and forty eggs but has been known to lay up to two hundred eggs. These eggs usually hatch in two or three days and the fry are free swimming in seven days. Both the parents and older juveniles will care for the young. The Cichlids have spawned several times this summer and visitors can see various different ages of fry in the Cichlid tank right next to the RedBellied Piranhas. Cotswold Wildlife Park opens its doors at 10am every day (except Christmas Day), with last admission at 3.30pm (4.30pm in the summer months). Visit www.cotswoldwildlifepark.com for further details. REATWOOD is a unique charity based in Marlborough which needs all the help it can get to enable it to continue its superb dual rolework, using ex-racehorses to educate disadvantaged children and young adults through Equine Assisted Therapy. As a Wiltshire Council Accredited Alternative Provider of Special Educational Needs programmes, Greatwood offers a variety of unique resources to schools, teachers, parents, carers and local authorities to meet the needs of vulnerable and ‘at risk’ children and young people aged 5-24 in the community.

These are the very individuals who do not respond well to conventional educational settings but thrive on the tailored programmes. Via the interaction with exracehorses through Equine Assisted Therapy, Greatwood now educates and helps hundreds of children each year with special educational needs (SEN), whilst providing those horses that couldn’t be re-homed previously with a useful occupation. The horses that are cared for at Greatwood may have suffered neglect several years after their retirement from racingoften because they have been passed from owner to owner and

Calne Camera Club C

ALNE Camera Club is now in its fortieth year. The Club currently comprises 30 members, encompassing those who are competitive and those who are there for the social aspects - it is a friendly club welcoming new and old members alike. Its meetings take place at the Beversbrook Community Centre in Calne on Monday evenings, starting at 7.30pm. The programme features a variety of events both photographic and local general interest offering something for everyone. Club Objectives The aims of Calne CC are to provide a venue where people, interested in the art of photography, can come together and exchange information, learn more about their interest, improve their photographic techniques and share images in various formats in a comfortable environment. The range of programme events includes talks, practical sessions and competitions, both internal and with other clubs and is supplemented by additional events, relating to local interest, where relevant. The Club’s meeting place provides a space where the objectives may be met. For practical evenings it is possible to arrange a number of sets, each being overseen by a knowledgeable member who can give advice and help with difficulties. Experienced members of the club are willing and able to answer questions and provide tuition to less experienced individuals.

Club Programme Calne Camera Club aims to provide a varied programme with areas of interest to suit most tastes. Programme items include practical evenings (table top and portraiture), outdoor practical events, presentations by guest speakers, critique evenings in small groups, training evenings, internal competitions and competitions with other clubs. The Club is a member of the Western Counties Photographic Federation and is able to enter images into the inter club competitions run by the Federation. Similarly, club members are able to enter Federation competitions on an annual basis. The Club is also affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This qualifies club members to present panels of images for distinctions thus giving them the right to apply relevant letters to their names. Activities During this year the club has had successful ventures to Lacock, where the floodlit abbey and surrounds were recorded for posterity. A member offered the facilities of his farm buildings for a photographic practical evening. This was attended by some 80 percent of club members who created some interesting images. Another venture was a week in the Lake District, which was oversubscribed. It was blessed with good weather and some memorable images resulted. The club’s President Eddy Lane invited members and their partners to a barbeque at his home – another well attended and enjoyable evening. It featured a

PHOTOFEST 2014 4th to 12th October

Over the last 7 seasons Calne Camera Club has run an exhibition of its work within the ‘Calne Arts and Music Festival’. The exhibition of members’ work takes place in the Heritage Centre in Calne. Typically up to 150 pictures have been on display for eight days. To mark our 40th anniversary (and the 8th of our exhibitions) the club is hoping to have 200 images to show the world. All the images on display will have been selected by individual members own choice. Members of the public are cordially invited to witness this display.

Motoring Travelling With Kids By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Keep family holidays this half term a trouble-free, happy experience by following these tips! Keep Entertained - Pack plenty for kids to do during long, tedious journeys. A device loaded with apps is nice and compact, but also consider hand held puzzles, colouring books, plasticine, stickers, reading books and cards. Keep Safe - Use a child locator if you are visiting busy airports or crowded tourist attractions. Your child wears a small unit strapped to a belt or shoe and you keep the transmitter. If you lose your child, set off the alarm and follow the sound to find them. For older kids, write your mobile phone number on their arm. Keep Healthy - Young children often get ill on holiday. Keep bugs at bay by having a supply of antibacterial wipes to clean restaurant tables, cutlery and toilet seats and hand sanitiser for when there are no washing facilities nearby. A basic first aid kit is also a must! Pack pain killers or an easy to swallow medicine like Calpol, along with antiseptic wipes, plasters, anti-histamines and a thermometer. Keep Memories - Give smaller children a robust, childfriendly camera to record what’s important and interesting to them, and encourage older kids to keep a travel journal on postcards by writing messages to themselves - they make great memories for adulthood!

HEN I was young (a long, long time ago) asbestos was everywhere. It was my dad’s favourite building material in the 1960s and he built a large garage at the bottom of our garden from the corrugated sort, merrily drilling and sawing it as he went. Asbestos was also a constituent of brake and clutch friction materials and with reckless ignorance all of us at work would use an air line to blow dust from brake drums etc, totally oblivious to the fact that we would probably die from it 50 years later. Now the house we live in has asbestos roof tiles and ceiling panels so my chances of survival are nil. Since 1990 asbestos is now classified as a hazardous material and can only be disposed of wetted and wrapped in 10 layers of plastic by men in nuclear proof suits . It is estimated that up to 2000 people a year die in the UK from asbestos related diseases. Now it seems that half the population is driving vehicles that kill 7000 people a year. Suddenly asbestos doesn’t seem too bad. For a long time it has been recognised that particulate (soot) and NOX emissions from diesel powered vehicles are harmful, but the UK government has instead concentrated on CO2 emissions, giving diesel cars tax advantages over petrol driven vehicles as they produce less of the greenhouse gasses supposed to contribute to global warming. So it seems now as if the government has been subsidising the distribution of poison gas.

Euro Emission Level 6 is due to be introduced for all cars manufactured after Sept 2014. It seeks to halve the amount of NOX emissions from diesel engines as these are 4 times more harmful to the atmosphere and global warming than CO2. The particulate emissions which are the current cause of all the pollution issues are to remain the same. Since 2002 most diesel cars sold in the UK have been fitted with a filter in the exhaust to remove soot particles. Their worth has been now called into question as it seems they don’t remove very fine soot particles that if inhaled can actually pass through the lining of the lungs into the blood stream. This can affect people with existing respiratory problems or heart disease especially those who live by a busy road. Particle filters have also caused a lot of problems to diesel owners who drive slowly or only do short journeys as they can block prematurely and only be unblocked with an expensive forced regeneration or replacement. Now it seems that another filter is going to have to be fitted to capture NOX adding to the complexity of modern diesels. If these NOX filters turn out to be as unreliable as the particle filters then the cost of maintaining a diesel car in the future is going to be prohibitive. Far better in my opinion to buy one of the small capacity turbo charged petrol cars that are available. So if you have an asbestos shed in your garden it is perfectly safe as long as you don’t drill or saw it. Your diesel car is also safe parked on the drive but maybe you should issue respirators to everyone on any route you wish to drive.

Local Village Feature

Yatton Keynell Words by Joanne Deacon and pictures by Oliver Howells

I

F you should point your car west of Chippenham and head five miles or thereabouts from the east border of south Gloucestershire, close to the turn off for the famous Castle Combe racing circuit, another turn off will lead you to the delightful picturepostcard village of Yatton Keynell. A typically, delightful Wiltshire village hardly changed in the last three hundred years or so, the village is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Getone”, the “Keynell” appearing sometime in the 13th century, believed named after one Henry Caynell who had a sizeable holding in the area. In 1242, his family bestowed a large amount of their land to “Stanley Abbey”, and in 1250 Sir William Keynell built a church as a thanks for his safe return from the Crusades.

68

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

He was responsible for giving the village its present name by the building of the church, which although its 15th century tower still stands, the building was mostly redesigned by George Edmund Street as part of a restoration in 1868. Dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch when the original building was completed in 1258, it had an unusual addition added to it before its restoration – in 1835 a small chapel was added named the “Ebenezer Chapel”, especially for the “free church” worshippers. Across the road from the church stands the “Bell Inn”, named no doubt after the church bell tower, but ancient deeds from 1764 show its original name to have been “The Old Inn, and the remains of out houses, stables, a brew house, orchard and garden are still faintly visible. The old toll road (now the B4039) leading to Castle Combe had a toll booth there until its closure in 1871.

Local Village Feature The horribly named “Smallpox Farm” stands on the road to Grittleton. Once a well run smallholding, its later name came from the fact it was used as an isolation hospital and dwelling for the sick and those dying of the disease in the late 17 hundreds, by then showing little or no signs of its days as “Park Farm House” . An unusual milestone at the base of a wall shows Hyde Park Corner, London, as being 97 miles away, and Sodbury being just 11 miles away. The nearby tiny hamlet of the quaintly named “Tiddleywink” made headlines as recently as 2003 when the locals campaigned to have it officially named on area and national maps. Like most small hamlets and villages, Yatton Keynell can boast a primary school and general store, also a few smaller businesses like an Allington Farm Shop and pub, and an annual Summer Fete takes place every year in June, with a delightful Christmas market each December. There is also a village hall where many functions take place, a driving range, and golf course. The cottages are a delightful

mix of white washed walls and mellow Cotswold stone, and the village is somehow sleepy and vibrant at the same time, with flowering shrubs tumbling over dry stone garden walls and hanging baskets gently swaying from cottage porches with sweet smelling flowers doing their best to climb out of the restraining baskets. Perhaps one of Yatton Keynell’s biggest claims to fame is that the ship “Angel Gabriel”, which carried Sir Walter Raleigh to Guiana in 1595 was financed by Sir Charles Snell, who did it by selling off large chunks of his local land. His family however managed to hold onto their home, The Manor House”, in West Yatton.

Gardening

by Lee Bestall

Native, but nice! W ITH a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed

‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives!

Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the striking red poppies which adorn the fields mid-way through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers.

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs. Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants … they’re born survivors!

Gardening

A tall story?

I

’M not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think.

Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!”

I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house.

There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course!

Regular or one off garden tidy-up service, weeding, pruning, lawn mowing, hedge trimming, and border maintenance Very competitive rate, free quotes given, fully insured and qualified (BTEC Horticulture Dist.) I am professional, hard-working, friendly, honest and reliable, with an excellent plant knowledge and a genuine passion for gardening

A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil.

If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-t-five feet darling’. She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway!

Bring Bring me me Sunshine Sunshine

O

ver the Summer months, I was privileged to lead a Service of Blessing to celebrate a Silver Wedding Anniversary. The happy couple left the church to the organ playing “Bring me Sunshine” with the congregation joining in by singing the immortal words: “Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.” I bet you are singing it silently to yourself right now. Co-incidentally, a week or so before the “Bring me sunshine” moment in church, the Bromiley family were on their holidays in the north of England. We spent a delightful day in Morecambe. The sun was shining, we strolled down the prom, ate the obligatory ice cream and fish and chips (not at the same time) and paid homage to the famous statue of the man who sang “Bring me sunshine” as his theme tune, Eric Morecambe. The statue (see picture) depicts Eric in his “Bring me Sunshine” pose. Much to my amusement, I witnessed tourist after tourist attempt the same pose whilst being photographed in front of the statue. It was great entertainment. If you ask most people what they want in life, happiness and love will surely be near the top of the list. What makes us really happy though? Does being a Christian guarantee happiness? To answer this, we might probably have to first make a list of the things that really do make us happy. What brings sunshine to our lives? A relationship, money, a walk in the country, a phone call, a good bottle of something, a new handbag, a win for your team, enjoying the garden...? I’m reminded of Eric Morecambe’s line “my neighbour asked if he could use my lawnmower and I told him of course he could, so long as he didn’t take it out of my garden.” Acts 14 v 22 suggests that far from being blissfully happy, the Christian should expect hardships to enter the Kingdom of God. It seems that happiness as we think of it is not really on God’s agenda at all, rather the Bible speaks of contentment. I can now hear one of Eric’s catchphrases, “that’s easy for you to say” (always delivered when Ernie would fluff a line).

80

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2014

Contentment can make a poor man rich. It is a peace that comes from knowing all is well with your soul and you are right in your relationship with God and neighbour. It isn’t dependent on material possessions or your environment. The Greek Stoic Philosopher Epictetus once said, “Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” There is a famous story of a rich industrialist who, whilst on holiday, found a fisherman sitting lazily beside his boat. “Why aren’t you out there fishing?” he asked. “Because I’ve caught enough fish for today,” said the fisherman. “Why don’t you catch more fish than you need?” the rich man asked. “What would I do with them?” “You could earn more money,” came the impatient reply, “and buy a better boat so you could go deeper and catch more fish. You could purchase nylon nets, catch even more fish, and make more money. Soon you’d have a fleet of boats and be rich like me.” The fisherman asked, “Then what would I do?” “You could sit down and enjoy life,” said the industrialist. “What do you think I’m doing now?” the fisherman replied as he looked placidly out to sea. Ecclesiastes 11 v 7-8 says this: “Oh, how sweet the light of day, And how wonderful to live in the sunshine! Even if you live a long time, don’t take a single day for granted.” (The Message Bible translation) Let’s live for God every day. Eric Morecambe coined the phrase “I am playing all of the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order.” Life can be messy or a little confusing, we want to be happy but so often we reach out for the temporary and the transitory. Lasting sunshine comes as we look to God, being truly content that whatever the world may offer, God is all we need. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

GOOD VIBRATIONS with Brian Justice

THE WHO HITS 50

N

EXT month The Who kick off what many believe will be their final tour in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band. Billed as “The Who Hits 50!” the concerts will see them take their audience on an amazing journey through their entire career from the days of The High Numbers to classic albums such as “Who’s Next”, “Tommy”, and “Quadrophenia”. Pete Townshend describes it as ‘Hits, Picks, Mixes and Misses’ and said the band will play all the classic anthems as well as tackling deeper cuts from their catalogue. Along with the tour there will be a double album CD covering their entire career. Can it really be FIFTY years since the band formed. For just a few months in 1964 The Who changed their name to The High Numbers under the guidance of there then manager Pete Meaden, releasing one single “I’m The Face/Zoot Suit” before reverting back to The Who. The classic line up of Pete Townshend (guitar), Roger Daltrey(vocals), John Entwistle(bass) and Keith Moon(drums) then released “I Can’t Explain” which became the first of a string of great hit singles (all written by Townshend) like “My Generation”, “Substitute” and “Magic Bus”. They also built a reputation as a stunning live act. During an early performance Townshend accidentally broke the neck of his guitar on a low ceiling which prompted wild reactions from the audience. From that point onwards Townshend and especially Keith Moon would regularly destroy their instruments on stage. An act that would prove costly over the years. By the late 60’s The Who had broken through in the U.S. and the rock opera double album “Tommy” was a huge success.

In 1971 the band produced what was undoubtedly their best album and one of the greatest recordings of all time, “Who’s Next”. Tracks like “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Behind Blue Eyes”, “Bargain” and Baba O’Reilly” showed songwriter Townshend at his best and were fantastic live. Constant touring allied to hit singles and albums cemented the band’s reputation as arguably the best live rock act in the world. Drummer Keith Moon was the “wild man” of the group, a totally “over the top” character who lived life in the fast lane. Self destructive behavior led to drugs, booze and Moon stories became legendary of outlandish pranks like exploding toilets and driving cars into swimming pools. The Who’s fortunes were to change dramatically in 1978. On September 7th Moon was found dead by his girlfriend in a London flat rented from singer Harry Nilsson (amazingly Mama Cass Elliot had died at the very same flat four years previously). An accidental drug overdose was the cause but few were surprised as Moon had abused his body over the years. The death of Moon was a huge blow and even though the band carried on (Kenney Jones took over the drum stool) they were never the same again. In 2002 another hammer blow befell the group when bass player John Entwistle (possibly the greatest bass man in rock) died from a heart attack induced by cocaine. Over the years surviving members, Pete and Roger, have called on the skills of some great musicians to augment The Who sound in the studio and live. There is no question that The Who have secured their place as one of the greatest rock bands ever and Pete Townshend one of the best songwriters this country has produced. Now with Daltrey into his 70th year and Townshend only a year behind the tour gives us a chance to salute them for what may be the last time.
