NOVEMBER 2014

Editor’s Letter Remembrance Day will be particularly poignant this year as we commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One. Read Rev Philip Bromiley’s moving article on page 26. There is somewhat of a historical feel to this issue too. In our Exploring Wiltshire feature we go off the beaten track to discover some gems - the Wiltshire & Berkshire Canal, a former Glove Factory in Holt, a new Long Barrow in All Cannings and an Aviation Museum in a pub – and if that isn’t enough, we’ve also got an article on the Great Dorset Steam Fair! With the season of goodwill fast approaching our ever-expanding What’s On section has some suggestions on how you can provide support in our area by becoming a Dementia Friend, volunteering in Wiltshire or joining the Community Link - please support these local good causes. Until next time . . .

FREE Computer Support for Chippenham

S

INCE February 2014, Wiltshire Council’s Wiltshire Online team have been working in partnership with the Rotary Club of Chippenham to provide free computer support in the town. The service provides friendly one-to-one support to anyone who wants to learn the basics of computers, tablets or smart phones. This help is provided every Tuesday afternoon, from 1:15–2:45pm at the Salvation Army building on Foghamshire, Chippenham, SN15 1HB. State of the art computers are available to use free of charge, although anyone who wishes to bring along their own laptop or tablet are welcome to do so. The trained Rotary volunteers (known as Digital Champions) help newcomers to overcome their fears and gently introduce them to the world of emails, word-processing, the internet, Skype and more. Project leader, Rotarian Diana Wright, is convinced there are still many people in the Chippenham community who could benefit from this service. “We are gearing our service to provide for any adult. However, there are two sections of the community which we think could benefit most and these are job seekers and our senior citizens. “Many job vacancies are advertised online – or require an application online – and this presumes that everyone knows how to use a computer, although this is clearly not always the case,” she explained. “Our training sessions can overcome this problem and help to ‘level the playing field’ for potential applicants.

So, if you are one of those who have “dropped through the computer net” but would like to take advantage of this free service, the opportunity is still there. Just call 01225 793349 or email digitalinclusion@wiltshire.gov.uk for details on how to enrol.

“We are also keen to show how a computer can open up communications through emails and Skype – something that many families would find helpful,” she continued. “For instance, the possibility of seeing and talking to grandchildren on the other side of the world is a particularly exciting prospect.”

What’s On

Remembrance Day Remembrance Day takes place on November 11 to mark the moment the guns of the First World War fell silent, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The first Armistice Day was held in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. The name changed to Remembrance Day after the Second World War. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November each year, with services at war memorials and churches. The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Canadian surgeon John McCrae, inspired the use of the symbolic poppy. The opening lines of the poem refer to the thousands of scarlet poppies that were the first flowers to grow over the churned-up earth of the battlefields. The Queen lays the first wreath during the national ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Money raised by the sale of poppies is used by the Royal British Legion to support servicemen and women. Tom Hancock

A REMEMBRANCE DAY POEM

Humans are flowers, fragile and meaningful There were lots of flowers on the floor, Very pale with blood galore. Working hard with push and pull, Where their potential had reached its full. The army of flowers grew and grew, They have blossomed, they have been true. Now let’s all remember with two minutes silence, as they conquered despite the violence. by Samantha Hammond 8AAS, John Bentley School

Trekkers Climb Mountains for RUH Cancer Care Fourteen individuals from Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire have returned home from an incredible ten day charity challenge trekking the Great Wall of China, to help raise funds for Cancer Care at the RUH. As part of their adventure, the trekkers scaled mountains and navigated unrestored and rarely visited sections of the Great Wall to follow its ancient path. Between them, the team has raised over £45,000 to help build a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH that will transform care for patients and their families. The team began their adventure in Beijing and journeyed through Huangyaguan, Jinshanling, Geubikou and Mutianyu, encountering all types of incredibly demanding terrain. Whilst some sections of the Wall have been extensively renovated there are many parts which have been left virtually untouched by modern man, which took the trekkers out of their comfort zones to experience the real Wall! Only two days were spent on the ‘tourist’ sections, with the remainder left to tackle the stony, steep and often slippery pathway that winds between watch towers, traditional farming villages, valleys and mountains. Whilst pushing themselves to their limits physically, the trek also had many rewards including the breathtaking views this ancient wonder has to offer. As part of their Great Wall challenge each of the fourteen trekkers, who live and work locally, had a fundraising target to reach. In the months leading

12

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

up to departure a flurry of fundraising activities have taken place to help them get there from cake sales, band nights, clothes swaps to raffles and a very apt Panda naming game – the adventure began before they even set foot in China! For each member of the team, the trek has been a life changing journey which has brought with it new experiences, friendships and a united effort for Cancer Care at the RUH. Rebecca Brooks, one member of the team, explains: “I’m so glad I took on this challenge for the Forever Friends Appeal to help raise money for a pioneering new Cancer Centre. As well as the challenge, this year has been a whole journey in itself, making new friends, taking part in new experiences and watching so many other people getting on board for the cause has been worth it alone. It has taken over my life this year, but it is a year I will never forget. I am so proud to have been involved in the China Trek for the hospital and thrilled to belong to a team that helped to raise so much money. Trekking the Great Wall of China was the most challenging but rewarding thing I have ever done and I hope it has made a difference to the way in which cancer will be treated locally in future.” With the success of the China Trek, the Forever Friends Appeal are now looking for another group of adventurous fundraisers to take part in Trek to India in October 2015 - to discover the spiritual home of the Dalai Lama! For more information please call on 01225 821535 or visit www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk Below: RUH Trekkers on the Great Wall of China Standing (from left to right): Russell Corbett, Christine Walters, Dr Hugh Goddard, Rebecca Brooks, Karen Burge, Paula Richards, Sarah Leybourne, Jacqueline Cousins, Biddy Walcot, Patricia Symons and Sally Smith Seated (from left to right): Dr Dorothy Goddard, Sue Gilby and Alex Whiting

General Information

How you can help . . . Calne Community Area Board has pledged to work with local people and organisations to try and become a Dementia Friendly Community. They are going to set up a working group of local people and experts to find the best ways to do this and they are going to start by trying to create 100 ‘Dementia Friends’ in the Community Area. The first Area Board Dementia Friends session in Calne took place on 7th October at the Area Board Health Fair - this resulted in 31 new Dementia Friends and a great start to the campaign! Dementia Friends are people who have undertaken an awareness session to help them understand how to behave in ways that will help those living with dementia to live well. If you are a local resident, run a local business or are involved in a local group we would like you to take part in one of these short and inspiring Dementia Friends sessions, to provide you with all the information that you need to be more aware, confident and helpful to people that are living with Dementia. (If you run a business or local group and have a number of members of staff we may be able to come and run a session just for you in the work/meeting place). Once you have become a Dementia Friend, if you would like to become more involved then you could: · Volunteer as a Dementia Champion and help to recruit more Dementia Friends.

Around 800,000 people in the UK have dementia. The word dementia describes a set of symptoms which include memory loss, and difficulty with thinking, problem solving and language. These symptoms can sometimes be caused by other things however, so it’s important to get a diagnosis as soon as possible. Your GP may refer you to a specialist consultant. Assessments are likely to include conversations with you and your loved ones, a physical examination, memory tests and/or a brain scan. Dementia is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or a series of strokes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed. Other types include vascular dementia affecting 17 per cent, and mixed dementia which affects 10 per cent of those diagnosed. Those with dementia may be given medicines to help with symptoms and slow down progression, but as yet there is no cure. Some sufferers also attend day centres and support groups. Carers can get help from local Carers Groups, Social Services and Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses. These nurses specialise in dementia and provide practical and emotional support as well as information to families, friends and professionals. Dementia UK is a charity. In addition to Admiral Nurses it also provides a national helpline and email service. One of the other major organisations in this field is the Alzheimer’s Society. This is a membership organisation which provides local support services, including day care and home care and befriending and support for families and partners of those with dementia. They also provide fact sheets and publications and have a helpline and an online forum called talking point. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Society fund research, provide training and development and campaign to raise awareness.

· Get involved with the Area Board working group. · Hold fund raising events to help local groups and organisations that support people living with dementia. · Volunteer to help in one of those groups and organisations. If anyone would like to sign up to become a Dementia Friend, we will run more sessions in the future, get in touch with jane.vaughan@ wiltshire.gov.uk to let her know you are interested, or pop into the Community Hub and ask them to let Jane have your contact details.

Brighten Up Your Day Volunteer! Do you want to add a spark to your day? Volunteering could be the answer. Volunteering is a great way to do something you enjoy and help others at the same time. Volunteers who are really motivated by the cause or enjoy their role have the most impact on the organisation they are helping. There are lots of different things you can do: gardening, CCTV operator, befriending blind veterans, public speaking, heritage site guide, administration to name a few. Here is a taste of the 1500 opportunities we have in Wiltshire: • Technical Advisers for Wiltshire Community Bank • Radio Presenter for Chippenham FM • Veterans Befriender for Alabare Christian Care and Support • Volunteer representative and fundraiser for Swift Medics Don’t just take our word for it, here is what some of Wiltshire’s volunteers say about their experience: • “I enjoy helping with the group, in fact I don’t ever consider my tasks a chore when I’m volunteering” • “I am a confident person by nature, however, I have met new people there, and made some new friends, which is great!” • “Volunteering has provided me with an opportunity to contribute to a local organisation in a productive way” You can get involved with volunteering however much spare time you have from a few hours a month to a day a week. Richard Heacock and Paul Hutchinson are holding a free music workshop based on the dance tunes of John Playford at Marden House, Calne on Sunday 30th November at 2pm. This is an informal yet structured 2 hour session with music provided and arranged in parts for differing ability levels. In 1651 when the country was a Republic under the rule of Oliver Cromwell, public dancing was banned. Against this unlikely backdrop, John Playford published The Complete Dancing Master, a book of the most popular dance tunes composed by such eminent musicians such as Henry Purcell and Jeremiah Clark. There were a further 18 editions the last produced in 1728 by John Young. Some of these melodies may be familiar, such as Lilli Burlero, Portsmouth and Hole in the Wall, but there are many lesser-known gems. If you are not a sight-reader and would like the music in advance please contact Paul on 07813 961249 for further information, otherwise just turn up! Richard Heacock is a composer and violinist. As a composer, he wrote the music for Tony Robinson’s “The Worst Jobs in History” (Channel 4) and Tall Stories Theatre Company’s “The Snail and the Whale” (touring the UK in 2015). As a violinist, he has played in Boldwood (he produced their first CD “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now”,) and for Playford dance group The Vale Islanders. He currently plays in Breton trio The Andro Sisters and will shortly be appearing as an 18th-century musician (complete with wig and tights) in BBC TV’s “Poldark.” Paul Hutchinson is a member of the renowned duo Belshazzar’s Feast who have appeared at many festivals in the UK, on television and radio. Among their many highlights was a nomination for Best Duo at the BBC Folk Awards in 2010. Paul is one the of top accordionists in this country and his speciality is 17th & 18th century music which has resulted in appearances at festivals in the UK, mainland Europe and USA.

Giving a little time to Remember

I

t was while sitting on the cliffs between Pentire Point and The Rumps in north Cornwall, UK, that Laurence Binyon first penned a poem that famously includes the Ode to Remembrance: They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. A stone plaque erected in 2001 rests there to this day. I always find it hugely moving to witness people gather to give an hour of our year to remember and honour those who were sacrificed in War. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Jesus not only said those words, but he applied those words to Himself and put them into practice. He too knew the reality and true cost of sacrifice. I suppose the theological difference between the sacrifice of Jesus and the sacrifice of those in Conflicts is this: Jesus’ sacrifice was universal. He laid down his life, so that we might live eternally, and be free from the consequences of sin. A service man or woman’s sacrifice is particular. They lay down their lives, so that we might live in freedom in the here and now. Both expressions of sacrifice proclaim the same truth that life and freedom are precious. Each year, as Remembrance Sunday comes along, it is as if it sharply taps us on the shoulder and says, “don’t forget. For your tomorrow, we gave our today”. This year, we commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. A 100 years seems a long time, until you think that most of the churches in our towns and villages have been here 800 years or so. In terms of the time line of world history, the Great War was just yesterday. Men and women, some in our own families, were called upon and chose to respond willingly. The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (in modern day Turkey) between 25th April 1915 and 9th January 1916, during World War I. The British and French launched a naval campaign to force a passage through the Dardanelles to secure a sea route to Russia. An amphibious landing was undertaken on the Gallipoli peninsula, that included men from all over the Commonwealth particularly Australia and NZ, to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople

26

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

(modern day Istanbul), but after eight months the campaign failed. There were huge casualties on both sides. A commander of the Ottoman forces was a man called Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Ataturk was a War hero and later became the founder of modern day Turkey. In 1934 Atatürk gave a tribute to the ANZACs killed at Gallipoli: Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well. Perhaps true courage is to not bear a grudge, but to hold out the arm of friendship and to work for reconciliation, between those who were once enemies. When looking at some of the history of Gallipoli, I recently came across the story of a man called John Simpson Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick was born in Britain but later moved to Australia. In August 1914 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving at Gallipoli the following year as Private John Simpson in the 3rd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. He served from the time of the landing at Gallipoli on 25th April until he was killed in action on 19th May less than a month later. Simpson became famous for his work as a stretcher-bearer during those days. Using one of the donkeys brought in for carrying water, he transported wounded men day and night from the fighting in the Monash Valley to the beach on ANZAC Cove. He did so, according to one eyewitness, through “deadly sniping down the valley and the most furious shrapnel fire”. Eventually, he was killed by machine-gun fire while carrying two wounded men and was later buried on the beach at Hell Spit. The war diary of the 3rd Field Ambulance commended “the excellence of the work performed by Pte Simpson continuously since landing”. Simpson was posthumously mentioned in despatches. One man, several acts of courage, a life not given in vain, but a life given for you and me. Acts of bravery and courage continue today, and for that we continue to give a little time and remember. Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

Retro Sweets

This Christmas why not take your loved ones back to their happy childhood-days by buying them some retro sweets. Lots of treats from yesteryear have become available again, and you can buy them in all shapes and sizes from single items to whole boxes of your favourites, and some that are gift packaged in hampers or used to create tree or flower designs. Many of us will remember sweets such as Space Dust, Black Jacks, Flying Saucers, Refreshers, Sugar Mice, Parma Violets, Midget Gems, Wham Bars and Traffic-Light Lollies- and I could go on to name many more. For me it was a Friday treat to have 10p to spend and select carefully ‘one of those and one of those etc’ which the assistant would then place into a little white paper bag and hand over to me. I would then joyfully savour them as I walked home from school taking ages to decide in which order I’d eat them. Behind those items, all laid out in small trays on the counter, were shelves crammed with tall glass jars, containing items such as Pear Drops, 30

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

Bon-Bons, Pineapple Cubes and Cherry Lips, all of which were more commonly bought by the quarter. There are now many shops with these layouts again, selling retro sweets. These range from tiny independents to chains that have many branches across the country. They all create a sense of nostalgia, and I’ve watched grown ups get such joy in once again telling the assistant ‘I’d like one of those and one of those etc.’ They are even known to whoop with delight when they find an old favourite again for the first time.

Such retro sweets have also become firm favourites at weddings, where special candy carts are sometimes set up for guests to enjoy. So if you are old enough to remember when Snickers used to be called Marathon, chances are your friends and family are also of the right era to enjoy a Sherbet Dip liquorice stick or some Fruit Salad chews. Why not take them back to their carefree days, pop in to an old fashioned sweet shop and tick another present off the shopping list. You could also arouse the interest of your younger relatives too, who won’t familiar with these sweets but are sure to find them as delightful as we did.

Egg Custard Tart Who doesn’t love a delicate custard tart? Serves: 6 Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 30 mins

Ingredients: 150g / 6 oz plain flour Pinch of salt 75g /3oz butter or an equal mix of butter and lard, cubed 2 - 3 tbsp cold water 3 large eggs, plus 2 large egg yolks, lightly beaten 55 g / 2 oz caster sugar 570 m1 / 1 pint single / light cream 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional – makes it sweeter) 1/2 teaspoon whole nutmeg, freshly grated Method: Heat the oven to 220°C/Gas 7 For the pastry Place the flour, butter and salt into a large bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Be careful not to over-rub. Add the cold water to the mixture a small amount at a time, and using a round-bladed knife, stir until the dough binds together. Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for a minimum of 15 minutes, up to 30 minutes. Gently roll out the pastry to line a 1½”/4 cm deep, x 7”/18 cm base tart tin. Brush the pastry all over with a little of the beaten egg. This will help seal the pastry during cooking. Place the pastry in the fridge while you make the filling. For the filling In a large bowl beat the eggs and egg yolks lightly with the sugar. Warm the cream to a gentle simmer, then pour slowly over the beaten eggs, stirring constantly. Be careful not to overheat the cream or it will curdle the eggs. Add the vanilla extract if you are using. Pour the egg and cream mixture through a sieve into the pastry case. Sprinkle over the grated nutmeg. Place the tart onto a baking sheet and bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 10 minutes to brown the pastry. Lower the temperature to 180°C/Gas 4 and continue cooking for a further 20 minutes or until the custard is set.

I Didn’t Know I Could Freeze That! Reduce your food waste – use your freezer. Bread – Wrap well and store somewhere it won’t get squashed. Defrost over night for the best results. Garlic – chop and place in icecube trays. Cover and freeze. Keeps it fresh and stops it stinking out the fridge. Cheese – Either freeze in a block or grate it first. Defrost thoroughly before returning to the fridge or it will become dry and crumbly. Onions – pre-chop lots and freeze them in bags ready for use from frozen whenever you need them!

TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068

Eggs - You can crack them and freeze in bags for cakes or scrambled eggs. Defrost thoroughly before use. They’ll keep for up to a year. Citrus fruit – Don’t waste the whole fruit when a recipe calls for zest. Pop the rest of the fruit in a poly bag and into the freezer. Defrost as required. Citrus fruits will keep for up to six months. Fresh Herbs – Bags of fresh herbs often go to waste. Chop and mix with butter then freeze in small pats or cubes. Or chop and place in ice cube trays, cover with water and freeze, ready to put straight into soups and casseroles.

or booties on top, after which the wax is peeled or rubbed away. This treatment softens rough skin and leaves hands and feet feeling beautifully silky smooth.

Manicures &Pedicures T

HE hands and feet probably get used more than any other part of the body, and consequently hands often become dry, rough and chapped and feet calloused and tough. As they serve us so well, they deserve a bit of pampering and tender loving care to keep them in tip-top shape. As a rule of thumb, whatever is done to your hands can be done to your feet, and a good starting point is to have a regular manicure or pedicure. Typically, a spa manicure or pedicure will start with a soak to soften the nails and skin, but if you want to give your hands and feet a real treat, why not try a paraffin wax treatment? Hands or feet are submerged for a few seconds in a warm mixture of melted paraffin and mineral oil. As they are removed the wax hardens slightly, and they are then dipped in the mixture again and the process repeated three to six times. A thick layer of wax eventually forms which is left to dry for 10-15 minutes, often with mittens

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

Exfoliation follows next. Glycolic exfoliation, which involves the application of glycolic acid in cream or gel form, dissolves and removes dead and damaged skin cells. In the case of feet, you may also get the soles pumiced, particularly on the heels and ball of the foot, to remove dead or hard skin. A nourishing massage of the hand, wrist and lower arm or the foot, ankle and lower leg, brings this stage of the manicure or pedicure to an end. As a finishing touch the nails are then shaped, the cuticles trimmed, and nail polish applied. In recent years, gel polish has grown in popularity. Manufacturers boast that the finish can remain flawless and chip-free for up to 14 days and with a zero drying time and no damage to the nail, it’s easy to understand why it’s often the first choice. Nail art is on the increase and is high profile in the fashion world and amongst celebrities. It’s a great way to express individuality, fashion savvy, creativity and humour. Nail art involves painting and gluing designs and jewels onto nails to create a myriad of exciting and fun looks, but it does require skill and a lot of time. An easier and quicker option is to have nail wraps. Made from vinyl adhesive, a detailed design can be applied in a fraction of the time – and looks almost as good.

I

Power Struggles

t’s decidedly chillier and Christmas must be coming because I have turned on the heating here at Beversbrook. This in itself sounds like a small task but is, in fact, a momentous and rather fraught occasion. The problem, you see dear Reader, is that we have underfloor heating, which takes a little while to warm up a room and tries the patience of even the most mild mannered of my lovely colleagues. Thus commences the annual battle of the thermostat. On day one, I announce ‘Great news! I’ve turned the heating on’ and my colleagues say ‘oooh good Mrs Scrooge, thank you for that’ and the thermostats get turned up in the individual rooms, despite my warnings to the contrary. The following day I get complaints it’s too hot, so thermostats get turned all the way down and then it’s too cold and up they go….well, you get the idea. We need to find a middle ground, so this year I have enlisted the help of our cleaners – or Ninja Heating Regulators, as I have renamed them. After everyone has gone home they re-align the thermostats to a normal room temperature level and I am hopeful that by December we will have found a compromise to please everyone. Having access to heating and power is an important part of running our Surgery but is just as vital to some of our patients, especially in winter months. Although we pay our bills to our energy suppliers (E.on, EDF, Scottish Power etc), Western Power Distribution and Scottish Southern Electricity own and operate the electricity distribution network in Wiltshire. If there is a power cut they are the ones who get us back to service as quickly as possible. Both companies recognise that for some households with vulnerable residents a power cut can be particularly worrying. WPD and SSE are therefore encouraging eligible customers to sign up to their Priority Services Registers (PSR). This register is designed to flag up those people who could benefit from more support due to health or social care needs. You can find out which company covers your area by contacting your electricity supplier. You can add your name to the PSR if you are elderly (over 60), ill, disabled, medically dependent on electricity or have special communication needs. Registering with the PSR is free and sign up is easy for both companies. If you feel you or someone you 46

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

know would benefit from this service you can contact either company, who will be able to advise you if you are eligible. Western Power Distribution website is very helpful www.westernpowerdistribution.co.uk or alternatively you can call them on 0845 724 0240. Scottish Southern Electricity’s website is also user friendly www.southern-electric.co.uk or call them on 0800 622 83. Alternatively, your local GP Surgery may be able to provide you with a leaflet which includes a pre-paid sign up form. Once you are registered with the PSR you will be able to access a range of services to help you should you suffer a power failure in your home. For example if there is a planned cut in the electricity supply you will receive a telephone call to let you know when it is happening with advice on how to prepare. PSR members will be given a direct telephone number to call in the event on an unplanned power cut, so you can find out how long it is likely to take to get you back to full service. Both companies work with local agencies, the British Red Cross and the Royal Voluntary Services, which means that if you are likely to be without power over some time, hot drinks and food can be arranged as well as any additional support needed. If an engineer does need to visit, a password is agreed in advance, so that you can feel assured and safe when they visit. SSE can also help supply specialist devices and adaptors and can assist in helping customers to understand their electricity bills. Both companies are also able to give advice to priority customers regarding funding available to help pay the bills such as the Warm Home Discount Scheme, which is a government initiative to assist households who suffer from fuel poverty. You could be eligible for £140 off your next electricity bill so it could be worthwhile checking. In the meantime, I will continue to wage my war over control of the thermostats in our Surgery. I am sure my team of stealthy Ninjas are the way forward… unless they turn rebel….then I’m in trouble. Is it hot in here or is it just me……?

The Magic of Fireworks Fireworks date back to the 7th century and are thought to have been invented in China. The first fireworks in England were displayed at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. Now, as well as being an integral part of Bonfire Night celebrations, fireworks can often be seen at New Year, Birthday and Wedding celebrations and frequently form the finale for major events. Fireworks come in many shapes and sizes and new types are being created all the time. Some of the many varieties are: sparklers, cakes, firecrackers, cherry bombs, rockets, jumping jacks and Catherine wheels. A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph and its shell can reach as high as 200 metres. A sparkler burns at a temperature over 15 times the boiling point of water. The different effects created by fireworks have names such as ring, spider, peony, palm and horsetail. The variety of colours and noises also thrill many of us. There are now a rainbow of colours and sounds that include bangs, crackles, humming and whistles. So what happens within a firework to cause us such excitement? Each firework is a precisely formed assembly of chemicals and fuel, carefully calibrated to produce a particular effect. Fireworks consist of stars, small clay or dough-like lumps or cubes 3 to 4 cm in diameter, packed into cardboard compartments within the firework shell. Stars contain a blend of oxidizing agent,

reducing agent, metal salt colouring agent and binders. When ignited, the stars produce both sound and light effects. The power needed to lift each firework into the air is provided by the highly exothermic combustion of black powder. The key to firework success is to trap the heat and gas in the bottom of the shell, which is positioned in a launch tube or mortar, until the trapped gas pressure builds to such a force that when it escapes, it hurls the firework high into the air. A firework is ignited by lighting the main fuse. This simultaneously starts both the fast action fuse, and the time delay fuse. The flight of the firework is powered by a fast burning wick. Where the wick ends, it meets the high explosive components of the firework. In this second stage, there is an instantaneous detonation producing both a loud explosion and a bright flash of colour. The black powder lift-charge is calculated to exhaust itself precisely when the slowburning, time-delay fuse reaches the first compartment packed with light-producing stars and black powder. The tremendous booms heard are the result of the rapid release of energy into the air, causing the air to expand faster than the speed of sound which produces a shock wave - a sonic boom.

Fireworks have come a long way since the ancient Chinese used red firecrackers to ward off evil spirits. Here’s a summary of the various types available: SKY ROCKET – Launched into the air it can climb up to 200 feet before exploding with a loud bang in a variety of colours and effects. A variation is the COLOSSUS which whistles as it ascends before exploding. ROMAN CANDLE – Enclosed in a cardboard casing, individual balls shoot out stars periodically after ignition. Noise effects include hums and crackles. FOUNTAIN – Enjoy the beauty but not the noise of a firework as a shower of sparks is quietly released in either a single or variety of colours.

Order your m Fireworks fro k .u o .c Alcopopin see ad on page 19 MINE – The loudest firework, its effect is dramatic and spectacular but short-lived. The mine is shot from a mortar shell on ground level and shoots coloured stars into the sky with flashes and bangs. CATHERINE WHEEL – A tube filled with gunpowder is coiled to produce a wheel effect. When the fuse is lit, the wheel rotates at speed, producing a spiral effect of coloured flame and sparks. Noise effects include crackles and whistles.

Bonfire Night

A Honeymead Bonfire Party Miss Parr and her friend Miss Dean (who shared a cottage by the Green), Both had a chum – the young Miss Hoole, the teacher at the village school. And now the summer days were done, and autumn too had come and gone, The days grew shorter, nights grew cold, and winter’s hands grew ever bold. Halloween had been two day’s ago, and now thoughts turned to bonfire glow, As on the Green a stack of wood piled ever higher – as bonfires should. But one dark night before the fun, a fierce storm full of noise begun. The thunder roared, the lightning flashed, and from the schoolyard came a crash, A tearing sound that split the night, and gave those round the Green a fright. A tall old tree had fallen down, and branches lay smashed on the ground. Poor Miss Hoole had an awful scare, she’d just been dozing in her chair. Her face in cosy firelight was gone a fearful chalky white. But came a knocking at her door, “Are you alright, you poor dear?” There on the step stood her two friends, in scarves and coats they looked like twins. They’d heard the crash and rushed to see what trouble had come from the tree. Relieved to find Miss Hoole ok, they had hot tea, then went away – Back home to bed to try to sleep. They managed without counting sheep. Luckily it hadn’t rained, the bonfire pile quite dry remained, And next day people came to see how they could help remove the tree. By tea time it was all serene – with the stack piled on the green, A most imposing sight to see. Oh what a grand fire it would be. The next two days the village Green – a busier place you’ve never seen, Was filled with stalls of every size, with games, and cakes, and “Win-A-Prize”. Excitement filled the very air, with chattering voices everywhere. A tent for those who felt the cold would serve hot drinks for young and old, Treacle toffee dark and sweet, and roast potatoes. What a treat. At last the fifth dawned, dry and cold. The children thronged bright eyed and bold. They couldn’t wait until the light faded away into grey night, And when at last the fire blazed bright into the sky and lit the night, Great cheers went up and rockets flew high in the air and out of view. Lovely lights flashed soared and banged. Andd later on there came the band – Who always entertained the crowd with cheerful music fun and loud. Slowly as the night wore on, the fire died down but the fun went on – The tea tent emptied, the cakes were sold, people shivered for the breeze grew cold, But people stayed till it was quite dark, and the embers glowed to a little spark. The children yawned with sleepy little heads, and everyone was ready for their beds. It had been a simply great fun night, and the bonfire had been a splendid sight. Later in their cosy room, as people sleepy watched the moon, Everyone secretly agreed, What a wonderful village was Honeymead!

Rare Clouded Leopard cub

Hand-reared after parents abandoned her Meet Nimbus, the rare clouded Leopard cub recently born at Cotswold Wildlife Park. Her start in life was a precarious one, as her mother sadly rejected her. The decision was taken to hand-rear her. Curator of the Park, Jamie Craig, took her home where he (with a little help from his children) could raise Nimbus and provide her with around the clock supervision and ultimately the best chance of survival.

Cotswold Wildlife Park opens its doors at 10am every day (except Christmas Day), with last admission at 3.30pm (4.30pm in the summer months). Visit www.cotswoldwildlifepark.com for further details. Photos: Cotswold Wildlife Park

Holiday homes for man's best friend! Swindon based Wagging Tails offers dog owners in the SN postcode area a home based alternative to kennels and has been shortlisted as a Finalist for Best Pet Service Business at the forthcoming 2014 Pet Industry Federation Awards. Run by Hilary Coates and her Beagle Bandit, Wagging Tails launched in Swindon in May to gives dogs their very own holiday when their owners go away. Despite only having been operating for four months Hilary has already received glowing feedback from owners and her business has recently been listed as a finalist for Pet Service Business of the year at the 2014 Pet Industry Federation Awards. Swindon dog owner Caroline who has used Wagging Tails said of the service, “I would not hesitate to recommend your service and cannot stress the difference a home carer made for Alfie’s experience and also our holiday know we had done the best for our baby!”

Dogs staying with Wagging Tails’ enjoy a holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. All carers are current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. Wagging Tails’ carers are typically former dog owners who are no longer able to take on the responsibility that goes with full time ownership but still love having dogs in their lives. Many liken the role to that of a grandparent as they welcome guest dogs into their homes for their holidays. Debbie, a carer in Swindon, says, “After having dogs for 16 years and sadly losing our dog about 2 years ago becoming a Wagging Tails carer was the next best thing for me.” Niki, also from Swindon, said a highlight for her is; “Being greeted by a waggy tail in the morning and having a ‘doggy companion’ on a part time basis”. Carers must have a secure and dog friendly home and garden, no children under the age of 6 and be at home during the day. Hilary ensures that all carers are insured and have been licensed by their local council (a legal requirement) before matching appropriate dogs to each carer.

As well as the companionship of the dogs they are looking after carers receive a small payment for looking after the dogs in their care. To find out more about Wagging Tails please give Hilary a ring on 01793 874 777, email sn@waggingtailsuk.co.uk or visit www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/sn

Dream Doors opens in Royal Wootton Bassett

Ian Sturton and his team, has opened his Dream Doors showroom on the High Street in Royal Wootton Bassett. And he already has an order book full of customers, all impressed by the franchised company’s time and moneysaving kitchen makeover service. A customer who had her kitchen doors, drawers and worktops swapped in just 2 days gave a glowing testimonial on the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade, commenting: ““Excellent service, very happy with all work carried out. Fitters couldn’t do enough to make sure that I was happy and discuss every stage with me.” Another customer in Devizes who chose the same simple door replacement service gave Dream Doors top marks, writing: “Exceeded expectations! We particularly liked the fact that the estimator/surveyor (Ian) was on site at start of work and at varying times during fitting. All rubbish cleared away and we are delighted! Dream Doors was established in Hampshire in 1999 and now has more than 50 locally-owned franchised showrooms throughout the country. Ian’s showroom – which has taken just six months to open – is the first to cover the SN postcode area. 60

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

An experienced retailer in his own right before joining Dream Doors, Ian says that, as a franchise, the company offers something other kitchen operators can’t. “I’ve visited plenty of businesses in my time, and this is definitely the most professional and well-run franchise I’ve ever seen,” he says. “It offers the best of both worlds for customers; they’re buying from a national brand that’s won numerous awards and built a fantastic reputation, but they’re also dealing with a local business owner who has their own reputation and livelihood at stake.” Made-to-measure and manufactured in the UK, all Dream Doors kitchen doors and drawers are usually fitted in a single day. It’s a convenient solution that leaves kitchens looking like new, but without the stress and upheaval of a full refurbishment. Most customers also choose new worktops and a sink, and while that might take a little longer, it is still at least half the cost of a comparable new kitchen. Dream Doors also supplies appliances from the best manufacturers and some of the most innovative storage solutions on the market, all making the best use of space in the kitchen. Ian offers a free guarantee on the doors and installation and asks for just a 50 percent deposit, only collecting the balance when customers are completely satisfied. Motoring Mayhem

Head of Steam! E

VERY time I log onto an MOT test the computer asks me to input the car’s registration and VIN numbers. Then it asks me for the fuel type and a drop box appears starting with petrol and diesel going through to steam and lastly ‘other’. What other could be I haven’t a clue, wind power? Who knows, any way I have tested most fuel types except other and steam. It is unlikely that I am ever going to test a steam powered vehicle as most of them are too large and too old to be tested. That however is no bar to my interest in this ancient form of transports which is why at the end of August we visited the Great Dorset Steam Fair, reputed to be the largest gathering of steam engines in Europe if not the world. We were told that one day was not enough to see it all so we booked a campsite pitch for Thursday and Friday for us and the Blunderbus (our 25 year old Renault camper). A few days before there had been a heavy rain storm and according to the local news the showground was a swamp with vehicles being towed onto the site, so

when we arrived and I saw the mud my heart sank with visions of being towed to the camp site by one of the enormous tractors that was hurtling about, but I needn’t have worried as the Blunderbus took it all in its stride and got us through the mire. After a brew we donned our wellies and walked out to the show ground. The first field we came to was full of ancient tractors either on static display or giving ploughing demonstrations. This section on its own was vast, with so much else on the periphery such as static engines and old shepherd’s huts. As a boy in the fifties I can remember some of the old equipment on display being used on local farms. Of course I was in my element with all this but ‘R’ viewed it all as men playing with their toys. She especially hates the stationary engines with a single cylinder and enormous flywheel that used to be used for driving all sorts of farm equipment. At these shows you see dozens of them chugging away with their proud owners sitting by the side as the machine gives an occasional ‘chuff ’. “About as exciting as watching paint dry”, was her comment. We slowly moved through the show seeing all sorts of steam engines driving different ancient devices until we came to the fun fair. There were dozens of magnificent old fairground rides with a line of over 30 gleaming showman’s traction engines in full steam to one side. Some of them looked like new with all their bright colours and polished brass, my favourite, being ‘Dolphin’, a mighty engine, brought all the way from Scotland for the show. Beyond all the old rides were some of the most enormous and terrifying modern fairground rides I have ever seen. Some were so large they looked as if they should be permanent fixtures. Needless to say we only tried the dodgems and a huge Ferris wheel. In the evenings there were various beer tents with music and a main stage with half a dozen tribute bands playing until midnight. Even when the music finished the showman’s engines were still puffing away with hundreds of people thronging amongst them. The whole show is unbelievable, so much to do and see and not enough space here for my description to do it justice. If you have never been, get your tent out, book a pitch next year and prepare to be amazed.

Small Business

Hunt for Wiltshire’s Greenest Business Brains begins

Green Business of the Year and Best Product or Service are two of seven award categories that make up the Enterprising Wiltshire Awards 2015. Backed by Wiltshire Council and run by WBSS, the awards open for entry this week and culminate in a gala ceremony in March 2015. In this, the awards’ third year, entries can be made in seven categories: small business, exporter, young entrepreneur, manufacturer, start-up, best product or service, and green business. In addition, one of the seven finalists will be named The Enterprising Wiltshire Awards Business of the Year. The awards celebrate Wiltshire’s top businesses while providing the ultimate winner – The Enterprising Wiltshire Awards Business of the Year – with a bespoke package of support and networking opportunities to help it fulfil its potential.

E

NVIRONMENTALLY-aware businesses in Wiltshire have a new opportunity to showcase their green credentials at the 2015 Enterprising Wiltshire Awards. Green Business of the Year is one of two new categories introduced by the Wiltshire Business Support Service (WBSS) in this year’s awards, which aims to highlight Wiltshire businesses’ efforts to reduce their impact on the environment – or play an active role in making the county a greener place to live. The second new category is Best Product or Service, which aims to put the spotlight on a Wiltshire business serving its customers in an innovative or outstanding way. Chris Simpson, Director of Business Support at WBSS, said: “We’ve had a tremendous reaction to the awards over the last two years, which have now firmly established themselves in the county’s business calendar. “Green business is a theme that’s been on my mind for a while. Last year, one of our entrants offered a service to juice apples for local people and communities. It’s ideas like these, which Wiltshire seems to be particularly good at generating, that we want to show to wider market. “In the three years since WBSS was created, we’ve helped over 3,000 Wiltshire businesses further their business plans so our team of advisers has a good feel for what’s happening in the county’s business community. There’s certainly a stronger sense of optimism – people are recruiting, looking for new markets, planning ahead and thinking about investment. Those are all good signs for our local economy, so I’m hoping to find some new and exciting business ideas in our 2015 award entries.” 66

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2014

Winners of the seven categories will each receive a cash prize of £1,500 provided by Wiltshire Council. The Business of the Year will receive an additional £500, bringing its total prize to £2,000, but most importantly a comprehensive package of business support, advice and networking opportunities provided by the team at the Wiltshire Business Support Service. “Our aim is to support and promote business in Wiltshire and showcase the benefits of trading here. We want to find both new and existing businesses that are doing something really special and then give them the practical help to take the next step.” In addition to Wiltshire Council, sponsors for this year’s awards include accountant Monahans for Best Small Business; the Federation of Small Businesses for the Young Entrepreneur Award, and Front Room Marketing & Design for Best Start-Up.

ENTERING THE AWARDS Judging will take place in February 2015 with a panel of judges made up from Wiltshire Council’s Business & Enterprise team, the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce and leading representatives from Wiltshire’s professional services & entrepreneurial community. Businesses have until 31 January 2015 to enter Entry is by completing a straight-forward online form available at www.wessexchambers.org.uk. The Long Barrow A new addition to an ancient landscape

T

HE Long Barrow at All Cannings was oficially opened on 20th September 2014. It is the brainchild of Tim Daw who built the Long Barrow on a field at his farm in Cannings Cross, All Cannings within the Marlborough Downs area of outstanding natural beauty between Avebury and Stonehenge. This ancient landscape is renowned for its chalk downland and ancient history. The long barrow is designed to complement it and become part of it.

Tim Daw (front centre) with the stonemasons who built the Long Barrow on the opening day.

A columbarium or place for cremated remains in urns to be kept, it is inspired by traditional long barrows such as the one at West Kennet. Whilst it is constructed in natural materials, it has been made relevant for today in its internal layout. It is aligned to the sunrise of the winter solstice when the sun will illuminate the internal stone passageway. The photographs show the long barrow under construction, which took 8 months to complete. Within the chalk mound there are five chambers arranged off the passageway that starts at the local Sarsen stone entrance, the original plans are for seven chambers, the other three may be added in the future. The chambers, or columbaria, have niches built into the natural limestone walls. each niche is about 600mm by 600mm and 400mm tall and is designed to be a family vault for the storage of cremated remains in urns. Depending on the size of the urns six to eight can be placed in each niche. The niches can be sealed with a memorial stone if required. There are also smaller niches for single and paired urns. The long barrow is for anyone. It is for those of any religion or none. The field it is in is being restored to native chalk grassland and will be kept as natural as possible for visitors to enjoy its beauty and solitude. There will about 300 niches being released to the public in the first phases of the build. For more information and pictures visit the website: www.thelongbarrow.com 68

Charity making waves on local waterways by Val Melville

T

HE WILTS & BERKS CANAL TRUST is a restoration organisation with a local section – the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne Branch – and it has a very ambitious aim: to restore the 60 mile long Wilts & Berks Canal so that it can be used for navigation once again. The canal originally connected local market towns including Melksham, Chippenham, Calne, and Royal Wootten Bassett, to the Somerset coalfields and also to Bristol, Bath and London. 2014 has been a momentous year for the Wilts & Berks Trust. Not content with the ongoing task of restoring bridges, locks or sluices, members also

72

decided to undertake the unfamiliar challenges of Event Organisation. The idea was to commemorate 100 years since the Act of Parliament which formally closed the canal, and to this end, the Trust organised Heritage Open Days at Pewsham Locks near Chippenham, and a River Festival in Melksham. Both events were a huge success, with many local people learning more about this wonderful project. Before railways or tarmac roads, canals were the motorways of their time; nowadays, people in search of escape from the stresses of modern life, appreciate life on the towpath: the slow peaceful pace, the chance to venture deep into the countryside, and the opportunity to get close to the wildlife that flourishes along these green corridors. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has many local volunteers who undertake a multitude of tasks from driving diggers, bricklaying and clearing towpaths, to giving talks, raising funds, organising workshops for schools and dressing up as canal-folk; there are as many different jobs as there are volunteers! All give their time freely to this excellent project, which could so enhance the local environment. New members and volunteers are always welcome; see more information on the website: www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk

The Goddard Arms CLYFFE PYPARD

by Helen Farley

T

HE GODDARD ARMS IN CLYFFE PYPARD is a public house with a difference and has been described as a ‘secret gem’ by those chancing upon it. Situated just 10 minutes from Royal Wootton Bassett, this traditional, old-fashioned free house pub, with both Public and Lounge Bars, is a place where you can come and talk over a pint, glass of wine or cup of tea and eat home-made cakes, cream teas and hot & cold snacks. The real ales are selected from numerous small breweries so the choice changes every week. But what makes it more unusual is that it houses a family owned aviation collection – currently about 250 exhibits are on show ranging from parts of the old Farnborough Wind Tunnel to a Martin Baker Mk 2 Ejector Seat, photos, prints and paintings, helicopter tail rotors and aircraft parts. The pub is popular with aircraft enthusiasts and also brings back memories for those visitors who were once stationed at RAF Clyffe Pypard, a World War

Two airfield located at the top of the hill (later used as a Transit point for RAF Lyneham and later still the Army). It compliments a wider area so rich in aviation heritage from manufacturers to airfields past and present. The Goddard Arms is a well-known stop for cyclists and walkers out for a day in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside and appears in many walking and hiking guides. Being positioned in such a tranquil landscape there is little to break the quiet which is reflected in our daytime opening hours (see our website at www.goddard-arms.co.uk for opening times).

Gardening

by Lee Bestall

Hedging your bets OK, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for

have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species).

wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s costeffective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you

For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings. Happy winter gardening!

Sculpture Parks Words and photos by Claire Woollam

A

S an alternative to your usual style of day out, how about visiting a sculpture park? You might say they are one of our country’s best kept secrets - did you realise there are around 40 in the UK?

i

Many are set in beautiful locations and each has its own uniquely different ambience and landscape. You may not know too much about sculpture, but walking one of these trails in such pleasant surroundings is sure to be restful and enlightening. Kids will love being outside, running freely amongst the trees and the art works; it’s a great way to open young minds, especially those who might rebel about walking around a regular gallery. This is also a pretty budget-friendly day out. Many parks have free admission and offer picnic facilities, so pack up that hamper, gather your brood and get outside to make the most of the British summer!

GOOD VIBRATIONS with Brian Justice

CAN ANY MERE MORTAL RESIST...?

B

ACK in November 1982 the world was introduced to a new Michael Jackson album, “Thriller”. Jackson, of course, had been very successful as part of The Jackson 5 on Motown. He continued solo. More hits followed and eventually the lure of a huge record deal saw him sign to Epic Records. His debut album from 1979 “Off The Wall” was a big commercial and critical success.

Landis hopes to release the video – which was the most expensive of its time on Blu-ray and possibly in cinemas according to press reports.

Soon after Jackson’s untimely death in 2009 the director filed a lawsuit accusing the singer of “fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct” with regard to the “Thriller” video, according to E! Online. Landis was seeking 50% of the net profits of the video, which, at the time, were substantial –more tham $1 It would be 3 years before “Thriller” and those in the million. “That lawsuit went on for so know thought the album would do well. Well! It was many years, but we settled mega, massive, huge- it and they paid me finally,” went on to become the ial Trivia t n e Landis told the paper. s s E ’s biggest selling album of J d B ie legen ov m “And so, actually there rro or all time. Absolute sales When h corded his re is something happening ce ri P t n are hard to establish but id Vince with ‘Thriller.’ It is going d piece, he d or w en certainly its north of 50 ok sp famous t cut: go to reappear in a highly at th se million. What contributed a whole ver sheer polished and threein l ea u sq to that success- great songs, s p, “The demon m u pl dimensional way that is so y, great song-writing, great they sp is ght/ It’s you li ve very exciting on the big de oo gr e th musicianship and great though screen.” so right / For production (courtesy of ill you stand Quincy Jones). Oh and the fact that the album spawned seven, yes seven worldwide hit singles did not hurt.

/ Yet st hard to beat run, et / You try to fe en with froz m o ore ream / But n you try to sc il er see / For ev sun you’ll ev ush cr o T / the crypt reaches from ”. ip gr you in its icy

One other thing helped immeasurably - videos. MTV had established itself as a new form of TV music entertainment-wall to wall video. The channel gave heavy airtime to Jacksons’ 3 videos from “Thriller”. “Billie Jean”, “Beat It” and the title track. The near 14 minute “Thriller” video (known as “Michael Jackson’s Thriller) is an all singing, all dancing classic strewn with dancers and horror related b-movie themes .It’s impact was immediate. It has become legendary being voted the most popular video ever and it had a profound effect on popular culture. Now let’s move up to date. Word has come through that “Thriller” will be getting the 3D treatment next year. The director John Landis has finally settled a long running legal dispute with the singer’s estate.

Landis has had a successful movie career with such films as “National Lampoon’s Animal House”, “The Blues Brothers” and “Trading Places”. It was his cult classic “An American Werewolf In London” that attracted Jackson to the idea of bringing him to direct the “Thriller” mini-film. The film may have been a vanity project for Jackson but turned out to be so much more.

The web is a buzz with rumours of what to expect next year but real details are a bit thin on the ground. It seems that Jacko had hoped to include a 3D version of “Thriller” as part of his “This Is It” London residency but of course that never happened. Other sources have implied that the estate had been considering making a “Thriller” video game. Well we shall just have to wait and see as more news filters through. Make no mistake, if this all comes together it will be a MAJOR event next year. I look forward to it.

Look out next month for the Good Vibrations Christmas Pop Quiz Special with great prizes up for grabs! You can tune in to Brian on Fantasy Radio 97 FM, Devizes every Tuesday 12-2pm for his “Packed Lunch” and each and every Saturday for his popular show, “Let’s Go . . .
