NO FEE INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the first issue of South West Grassroots Golfer. I wanted to expand my previous magazine, Golf Gloucestershire to involve more counties and this is the first issue since that change, I do hope you like it, and as ever any feedback is greatly welcomed. I now cover 8 counties, namely Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Wiltshire and Dorset so enjoy the course reviews and resort reviews included in this issue. Also included are Area Reviews for Lancashire and Mid-Glamorgan, arguably two of the best destinations for a links golf break in the UK.

Cheltenham Mortgages is a long established business with over 2000 clients. Business is mainly through recommendations of existing clients. We keep things very simple and straightforward and guide you through what is most people's biggest financial decision in their lifetime. Best advice combined with outstanding service is what we do. "Working for you from start to completion"

There is so much I could include in this magazine but I want it to be informative and interesting to you, highlighting information you might not know about but is of interest to you, like the Meet your County Champions pages for Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Gloucestershire – you’ll more than likely know the names but do you know the faces? You do now! You can win a round of golf for up to 4 players at Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club on page 12, just answer the simple question and you’ll be in the draw to win the prize. WestonSuper-Mare is a stunning links course and one of my favourite courses in Somerset, it’s also one of, if not the first links course the travelling golfer can visit when venturing down to the South West – the question is fairly simple so make sure you enter this fantastic competition.

RESORT REVIEW The Dorset Golf & Country Club Located just 10 miles from Poole and Dorchester The Dorset Golf & Country Club is set in the heart of Dorset. The Course, Facilities and Resort are built over the 350 acres of privately owned woodland in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Truly peaceful and picturesque surroundings. Dorset Golf & Country Club | Bere Regis | Hyde | Dorset | BH20 7NT Telephone (01929) 472244 | Fax (01929) 471294 | Email: admin@dorsetgolfresort.com

CLUB INTRODUCTION The Dorset Golf & Country Club, jointly owned by the Danish Count and Countess Lerche, and John Champion is undoubtedly one of the golfing gems in the South of England. The Championship courses are laid out with generous fairways, beautifully sculptured greens and surrounded by cleverly placed bunkers. The resort is an ideal location for golfing holidays as well as bowls holidays, and if you play neither it is an idyllic place to enjoy a holiday in any of the accommodations the resort offers which you can read about later in this revew. RESORTS KEY FEATURES The Dorset Golf & Country Club has many features that truly make it a unique experience and destination to visit. All of their golf packages include Dinner, Bed & Breakfast with free golf included (18 holes a day). The only

choice to make is whether to stay in the Resort or Hotel. The first thing I must mention is that the Resort village has a 5 Star Gold Award. Visit Britain awarded The Dorset Resort with the Gold Award for its outstanding Luxury Homes, its food, attention to detail, customer service and surroundings, and is one of only a few awarded each year throughout the country. This makes the Dorset Resort the only 5 Star Resort Village in the South that is on a golf course. It’s an amazing achievement considering that South is a popular holiday destination with a lot of rentable accommodation. The 12 Fairy tale Scandinavian-style houses at the Dorset Resort are very different types of buildings not often 8

seen in the English Countryside. Made entirely from trees grown in the Nordic forests of Finland, these houses create a unique healthy living environment because the wood “breathes” whilst at the same time being a better insulator than brick. Located in a quiet wooded glade, in a pine tree forest, these beautiful houses sleep up to eight people and can be rented throughout the year. Each one has a fully fitted kitchen, luxurious furniture, natural oiled pine floors, walls and ceilings, wood burning stoves, sauna in every home, verandas, trolley sheds – in fact, everything to ensure five star accommodation for all guests. The latest addition of the Woodland Cottage, a £500,000 luxury house has fitted in perfectly with their log homes, and has in fact, become the most rented house sleeping up to 10 comfortably.

This is a perfect venue for groups as unlike other venues you can all spend time together privately away from the hustle and bustle in your own Log Homes. The Resort also has a 16 twin bedroom Golf Hotel which is perfect if you’re just a couple looking for a get away. It’s conveniently situated next to The Resorts Fitness Centre and Sauna facilities. RESTAURANT AND CLUBHOUSE The Clubhouse is situated in the hub of the Resort overlooking the course and Purbeck Hills. The unique, air conditioned clubhouse with its large extension can cater for over 250 guests at any one time. Beautifully furnished and with two large screen TV’s the clubhouse offers entertainment including Sky Sports and light background music. This makes it the perfect place to lose a few hours enjoying company or relaxing. The clubhouse also adjoins the exquisite ‘Fairways’ restaurant where the evening dining service takes place. The restaurants 3 course menu is changed daily and designed by their team of talented chefs. Every dish is freshly prepared from scratch using local ingredients and catered for any individual needs or requirements. The Dorset Golf & Country Club can boast about having one of the most complete bars offering a large selection of beers, wines and spirits. A wide selection of single malt whiskies are also available with a comprehensive spirit selection. Bottled beers and bar snacks are also available. The clubhouse houses a separate games room, darts room and modern changing facilities. The staff really does look after your every need after your round of golf. GENERAL VISITORS Societies and Visitors are made very welcome at The Dorset, I noticed a great atmosphere amongst the visiting groups. Welcome poster at the door and thoughtful signs with your society name on are a nice touch. There is a dedicated society manager always on hand to help however I found all the staff extremely helpful whether I was in the Clubhouse or Proshop. Societies and visitors are welcome every day subject to availability with packages

to suit all. For more information Call Marc on 01929 473913 or email marc@dorsetgolfresort.com

THE COURSES

The Championship 27 holes of Golf at The Dorset is designed by the prolific designer Martin Hawtree who designed Donald Trumps course in Troon, Scotland and is currently consulting for the redesign of The Open courses. The same style of large clover shaped bunkers and enormous undulating greens runs throughout the 27 holes of golf although each Nine does have it’s own identity. There are no ‘hills to climb’ on the golf course making it suitable for all ages and abilities. Multiple Tee options means the course can play anywhere from 6182 to a monstrous 7000+ yards. After talking to their Head Green keeper I’ve found out a huge amount of investment is on going at the resort with improved irrigation, additional pathways and numerous cosmetic enhancements which ensures the course stays open during even the coldest and wettest spells every Winter. Great grass coverage on tees meant no mats will used again at any point. It’s exciting to know that no matter when you choose to stay at the resort you can play the proper course all year round, it’s almost guaranteed golf. Below you can briefly read about each nine:-

LAKELAND NINE

A relatively gentle start with a par 4 of under 400 yards and a reachable in 2 par 5, the 2nd is a definite birdie 9

chance! Hole 3 is a tease, you’ll stand on the tee feeling like you can drive the green but you’d be foolish to try, lay it up, wedge on and get your birdie that way. 4 and 5 are the toughest two holes on this nine, a well-protected long par 3 is the 4th hole, an extra club needed to the raised green and the 5th is a tough hole, over 400 yards with a ditch running across, at an angle at driver carry distance, a great par if you can achieve it! At 540 yards the 6th is long but played sensibly shouldn’t present too many problems, the 7th is a lovely par 3, tricky green this one so be careful and don’t go long or you’ll find the water. I suspect those who know the course will be surprised when I say the 8th hole is my favourite on this nine, 343 yards of quality design in my opinion, strategically placed hazards and a green with subtle breaks, so many options on this tee – super hole! You complete this nine with a gentle par 4 where the main objective is to avoid the bunkers, do that and you could easily complete the nine with a birdie. This nine really gives you a chance, wide fairways are a feature so make the most of it!

PARKLAND NINE

A real birdie chance gets you going on this nine, the longer hitters will be aiming to carry the bunkers and get somewhere near the green on this short par 4. A relatively short par 5 is your next test, and it’s a cracker, avoid the 2 bunkers to the left and you’ll be in position to attack the green, play the first 2 holes on this nine well and you could start birdie, birdie! The 3rd on this nine is a good hole, you can’t go left off the tee so you invariably drift further

right than you’d like which makes the 2nd shot longer, water is still in play for the 2nd shot but you can bail out right if you need to, really strong golf hole. It doesn’t get any easier on the next, 2 bunkers to avoid from the tee and a ditch needs to be avoided, is there a weak hole on this nine? A risk reward hole next, you can get close to this green if you are prepared to take a risky line, the sensible play is down the fairway and knock your approach onto

of the fairway and the left side of this green to avoid trouble. The 4th hole on this nine is a par 3 that plays one club longer, and with all the trouble at the front of the green play to the middle/ back and accept the longer birdie putt. At 309 yards on the card most golfers will be expecting to have a good birdie chance on the next, it’s much harder than that so a mid-long iron from the tee, find the fairway and wedge on, I’d take par every time on this tricked up

a slight fade off the 2 bunkers sets up a mid-long iron approach to a green surrounded by bunkers and with some crafty subtle breaks, a definite birdie chance. When you are stood on the tee it’s a superbly laid out hole that greets you, as you can tell I quite like this hole!

the green. Arguably the best par 3 at this resort is your next challenge, a long iron to a tricky green where a par is to be treasured. A par 5 of real quality is next, so many options, reachable in two but you’ll need to get a good drive away. The final par 3 on this nine next and a really good chance of a birdie, a huge green so get your club right! What a super hole to complete this nine, a long par 4 but you really should be chipping at worst for a birdie, avoid the two bunkers and you’ll enjoy this excellent hole! This is a seriously good nine holes of golf, there isn’t a weak hole and there are so many clever hazards, one of the best designed nines I’ve played!

hole. Avoiding the huge pine tree is the main objective on the next, a short par 3, do that and you’ll be putting for a birdie. At less than 300 yards the next hole requires a very straight tee shot, otherwise you’ll be blocked out for your approach, 2 well placed bunkers make the approach visually imposing. Another fine par 3 next and a long iron for the average golfer, again, all the trouble is at the front so trust your swing and play to the middle of the green – great par 3. You complete this nine with a short par 4 that plays longer, slightly uphill and the tendency is to play onto the first fairway of this nine making the second shot longer, an enjoyable second shot as it’s a challenge and tests your mental game right to the end. Much the tightest and in my opinion the toughest of the 3 nines here, another good test of your game though!

practice green, bunker and short game area, pitching green and practice nets for those who just fancy a couple of swings. So you can certainly hone your skills before or after you game

FAVOURITE HOLE Really easy this, the 2nd hole on the Parkland Course is a very fine golf hole. It’s a par 5 and I actually think it would make a better par 4 but nevertheless

All in all a fantastic place to stay and play, luxurious accommodation, great golf, fantastic food and plenty to keep you occupied. A place I will certainly be returning to.

WOODLAND NINE

This nine starts with a gentle par 4 that shouldn’t present too many problems, they are ahead! At this point the wide fairways become a thing of the past, a tricky par 4 with water to the right of the green is next, the bunker to the left of the green sees plenty of action as that’s the safe bail out. Another tight par 4 is next, favour the right side

10

OFF THE COURSE The resorts benefits from great practice facilities including a 16 bay floodlit undercover driving range, huge

The resort has just invested in a brand new fleet of electric buggies so if you don’t feel like walking you can drive round in style and comfort. Once the golf is done if you feel like another activity you have a state of the art Gym and Championship 3 rink bowls arena on site. The local area also has lots to offer! The resort borders one of the best shooting schools in England and is almost next door to 2 of Dorset’s top attractions ‘Monkey World’ and ‘The Tank Museum’. For those who feel a little more adventurous The Dorset Gliding Club is just down the road for a flying experience.

COURSE REVIEW Burghill Valley Golf Club Situated in the quiet parish of Burghill just outside Hereford lies the beautifully serene Burghill Valley Golf Club, the course is partly set in what were previously apple orchards which I’m told is particularly pretty in early spring. From Hereford city centre take the A4110 (Three Elms Road) onto the A4103 (Roman Road) and then onto Tillington Road, the golf course can be found 2 miles along on the left hand side, it’s not difficult to find. Burghill Valley Golf Club | Tillington Road | Burghill | HR4 7RW Tel: 01432 760456 | E: info@bvgc.co.uk | W: www.burghill-valley-golf-club.co.uk

THE COURSE At 6224 yards off the white tees the course is of medium-long length, there are 4 par 3s, 11 par 4s and 3 par 5s, par is 71 for the men. Accuracy is the key at this very well laid out venue, stray off line and your chipping back into the fairway, keep it straight and you’ll enjoy your round at Burghill Valley. FRONT NINE The front nine is the slightly easier of the two nines, you start with 2 short par 4s and a par 3, holes 4, 5 and 6 are strong holes that would test even the low handicapper. You feel like 7 is a birdie chance and the front nine finishes with a long par and a superb par 4 that plays down the side of a lake. BACK NINE You begin the back nine with a long par 4 followed by an even longer uphill par 5, the 12th provides some respite at 150 yards downhill. Hole 13 is another long par 4 with OB all down the right, the 14th is a medium length tricky par that

is well protected. At 431 yards the 15th isn’t easy, and 16 doesn’t lessen the test and is intimidating from the tee. You complete your round with two shorter par 4s, the last is just under 300 yards so if you can reach it does give the option. FAVOURITE HOLE My favourite hole is the par 4 9th hole, a dogleg left of 400 yards, you have options off the tee, aim an iron or fairway wood at the 150 post, this will put you in good position for your second shot. Or you can try and draw the driver or three wood (fade if you’re left handed) down the side of the lake which will leave a much shorter and more straightforward approach to the green, OB runs all down the right of the hole so two well-placed shots are needed, many a card has been wrecked here I can guarantee! OFF THE COURSE A smart clubhouse with bar and patio area greets you as you arrive at the club, there is ample parking, 2 driving 12

nets and a putting green allow you to warm up prior to your round. A small but well equipped pro-shop provide everything you will need, there is a driving range about ½ mile from the clubhouse where you play holes 10, 11 and 12, all in all the facilities are very good. WHY YOU SHOULD PLAY THE COURSE ‘Hidden Gem’ is not a term I look to use very often but Burghill Valley is exactly that, and at £20 for 18 holes midweek you’ve got to venture over and play this course. It’s very neat, tidy and in good condition, the greens are large and excellent quality with enough subtleness to make your putting test very interesting, the bunkers are also excellent, just enough sand to play a proper bunker shot. Bluntly put it’s excellent value for money, an easy walk and thoroughly enjoyable – go and play it, you’ll be very pleased you did.

North Gloucestershire Foursomes League

End of Season Review Lilley Brook ended the season as Division 1 Champions, ending Minchinhampton’s dominance of the league. Stinchcombe Hill will look to bounce back next season after a very disappointing campaign and they were relegated along with Gloucester. Division 2 was dominated by the very impressive Forest Hills side, it will be interesting to see how they fare against the likes of Lilley Brook and Minchinhampton next season, they

will be a strong addition to the 1st Division. Joining them after a great season are Cirencester, the only team to beat Forest Hills all season. Puckrup Hall and Brickhampton were relegated and will be hoping to achieve promotion next season, I would expect one of those to capture the 3rd Division title next season. Ross-on-Wye achieved promotion from Division 3 and could go up again next year as they have a very young but good side and

experience will make them a force, joining them in Division 2 will be Tewkesbury Park who had a great season and thoroughly deserved their promotion. Huge Congratulations to Lilley Brook - 2014 NGFL Champions, and also to Forest Hills and Ross-on-Wye A Teams for gaining promotion – WELL PLAYED!

CLUB REVIEW Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club Weston-Super-Mare golf club is located on the coast of Weston Bay in the southern part of the town, approximately 7 miles from J21 of the M5, the golf course is very easy to find and is the first ‘proper’ links course as the travelling golfer heads south down the M5, and for that reason it is extremely popular. Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club | Uphill Road North | Weston-Super-Mare | Somerset | BS23 4NQ Telephone (01934) 626968 | Fax (01934) 626968 | Email: secretary@westonsupermaregolfclub.com

The course offers a challenging test of links golf, requiring accurate shots in order to score well. It’s always said about the friendly welcome you get at Weston, you’ll never be a stranger for long! The course is a tough par and an easy bogey and challenges all standards. CLUB HISTORY Queen Victoria was on the throne and Gladstone was Prime Minister, when the first steps were taken to form

Weston-Super-Mare Golf Club. The first recorded evidence of the formation is in the proceedings of a public meeting held at the Grand Atlantic Hotel on 4th July 1892. At that meeting the Chairman, who was Sir Richard Paget (Member of Parliament for the Wells Division), said in his opening remarks that he had no doubt that a Golf Club would be of general advantage to Weston, at Burnham-on-Sea such a Club had been eminently successful. He advised that land owned by Mr R B Graves-Knyfton had been inspected and would prove admirably suited for the links. The report written by Tom Dunne, a man of great experience in laying out links, who had planned some 30 links in various parts of the country during the previous 6 months quotes “that on the land situated between the Royal Sanatorium and Slimridge Farm, a Golf Link may be formed second to 16

none in the world. There are a number of natural hazards and the turf throughout is of excellent quality. The Ladies links will, when several hazards have been made, form a good course also. course is of medium length, there are 3 par 5’s, 10 par 4’s and 5 par 3’s making the par 70. One feature is how flat the course is, it’s one of the easiest courses to walk I’ve ever played, and for that reason will appeal to golfers of all ages. It’s a fine test of links golf, worth every penny of the very reasonable green fees.

COURSE REVIEW THE COURSE

At 6245 yards off the white tees the

17

You start your round here with two par 4’s, both just over 350 yards and both with large greens, a chance to pick up at least 1 shot early. The 154 yard 3rd is a fine par 3, favour the right hand if you dare as anything left leaves a tricky chip. Hole 4 is another medium length par 4, and the hole needs due care, Weston isn’t a course to smash driver

on every hole, it’s a ‘think your way round’ course. Over the road to the 5th and 6th, two very fine holes which provide stunning views across the Severn Estuary. Back across the road to the 7th hole, another gorgeous par 3, very well protected with bunkers, the large green makes choosing the right club tricky. Avoiding the right hand ditch on the 8th should result in a birdie chance on this short par 5, the 9th takes you back towards the clubhouse and at 421 yards it’s a tough end to the front nine.

BACK NINE

You complete the first loop here with the 10th that takes you all the way back to the clubhouse, a short par that could yield a birdie if your approach is good, keep your tee shot left to make your approach easier, stories of the clubhouse roof being used are commonplace on this hole. Hole 11 is a superb par 3, nearly 200 yards and so

many options depending on the wind, could easily be driver or short iron, great hole. The 12th is a hole that needs plenty of thought, with the correct course management you should be putting for a par, the 13th is another short par 5, the raised green means anything short with your approach will leave an awkward chip, the longer hitters will be thinking birdie. At just 129 yards the 14th really shouldn’t pose to many problems, just don’t go long here, take a minute to admire the view on this tee, stunning! Out of bounds all down the right of 15 creates obvious problems, this is a fine

hole where a par should be treasured. 16 is the final par 3 and needs a good straight shot to set up a birdie chance. Keeping your ball left on 17 and 18 will ensure you don’t flirt with the OB on

either hole, a tough finish to a fine test of golf.

FAVOURITE HOLE

OFF THE COURSE

Weston-Super-Mare benefits from good facilities, there is a driving range to the right of the 15th fairway so a fair walk from the clubhouse but you can jump in the car and drive along to it if you prefer. As you arrive at the Club you will see the Pro Shop, fully stocked with something for everyone - a wide range of goods, equipment, accessories and club repair services. The Custom fitting service available using the new GC2 Launch monitor. For more 18

It has to be the 5th hole, Stroke Index 1 and rightly so, it’s a very slight dogleg left and at 411 yards it’s a good test for the lowest handicapper. You can open your shoulders on the tee, just don’t block your tee shot too far right, your approach needs to be accurate, you want to aim left but don’t overdo it or you’ll be up on the 6th tee. Take an extra club with your approach as it plays longer due to the dead ground. It’s a large undulating green so 2 putting is not a given, just an all round top quality links hole that would grace any links course in the world.

St Annes Old Links Golf Club

AREA REVIEW Lancashire’s Golf Coast Let’s go to Lancashire I said, there are some quality courses up there, and probably a few hidden gems as well, and as you’ll decipher from the following reviews I was right, even if these aren’t hidden gems they are spectacularly high quality links golf courses in an area so rich in quality links it’s got to be considered as a potential venue for a golfing trip, enjoy Lancashire’s Golf Coast. ST ANNES OLD LINKS GOLF CLUB, ST ANNES Just a hop, skip and a jump from its more illustrious neighbour, Royal Lytham & St Annes lies St Annes Old Links Golf Club. Unsure of what to expect but having heard very good reports I paid a visit to the course and was highly impressed with what the venue had to offer. I must mention the stunning clubhouse, with views from the bar out over the course, on a lovely summer evening I’m sure it’s a most pleasurable spot to enjoy a glass or two. Onto the course itself and for me it’s one of the best layouts I’ve played, the course designer has used the land

expertly and you play into every corner of the course but it all feels very natural. I could run through the course hole by hole but I won’t, I will however mention 2 holes on the front nine. The 4th is a slight dogleg right par 4 of over 450 yards with trouble all down the right hand side, so the left side is the play but this makes the hole longer so across the corner of the dogleg is the ideal line. You’ll do very well to hit the green in 2 on this ‘long’ par 4, the green is large and fairly flat, your problem is finding the target in regulation. I must mention the stunning par 3 9th hole, at 170 yards it doesn’t seem too tricky but the long narrow green is a tough

21

target to find, cleverly placed bunkers further the test and you do it all in full view of the members in the clubhouse, it’s a terrific par 3. Onto the back and the 11th is worth a mention, only just over 350 yards but your drive needs to be at least 220 yards to carry far enough for a good sight of the green, and beware the very clever bunker just short right of the green, it has a swale which throws your pitch off into the sand, it’s so devious you don’t really see it from the fairway so be careful, more clever design! I will also give a mention to the 13th hole, just 184 yards but we played in straight into a freshening breeze and it meant

we all hit much more than you’d imagine you need, the two-tiered green is enormous so two putting is not a given from anywhere, I’d be pretty sure this hole is a regular topic od discussion in the clubhouse, it’s stroke index of 8 tells you all you need to know. St Annes Old Links is tremendous links golf with stunning picturesque views across to Blackpool and beyond. I couldn’t recommend this course highly enough, you’ll enjoy the experience and the history of the venue, if you were lucky enough to get a nice still day you’ll score very well, turn the wind up a notch or two however and this course will bite back…..hard! It’s a course where you are not under pressure on every shot and I think that adds to the enjoyment. For more information about St Annes Old Links please visit the website at www.stannesoldlinks.com or ring the club on 01253 723597. The Clubhouse, Highbury Road E, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, FY8 2LD.

WALLASEY GOLF CLUB, THE WIRRAL It’s not often you are privileged to play at a venue that is so important to the history of the game but Wallasey is one of those venues. Have you ever played in a club competition that isn’t a medal? If so it’s probably a stableford, and Wallasey is where stableford was

devised by Dr Frank Stableford, who was a member of the golf club in the 1930’s. For that reason alone Wallasey is worth a visit, couple that with a very fine golf course and it’s got to be on your ‘to play’ list. I was impressed with everything about Wallasey, the pro shop is crammed full of the latest brands and styles, all at very reasonable prices, the historical clubhouse is a delight to walk around, so full of history and wonderful art, you know you are somewhere special. Onto the golf course and it’s not the toughest links you’ll ever play, but certain holes will stick in your memory, the 3rd meanders its way up the hill and is a super par 4, the 4th is one of the finest par 5’s I’ve had the pleasure of playing and the 9th is a delicate par 3 that requires your utmost attention, make no mistake, the front nine at Wallasey is one of the finest in the land, of that there is no doubt. The back nine doesn’t let the front nine down either, some very fine holes such as the 11th, a fine par 4 that requires an accurate tee shot, the short par 3 12th is surrounded by well-placed bunkers and the back nine finishes with two very fine par 4’s, the 17th shares the fairway with the 4th hole and you need to get far enough down to give you a sight of the green and the 18th is a majestic finishing hole, your final approach is played straight towards the clubhouse so the members could well be watching you attempt to hit a large but intimidating target with possibly as much as a fairway wood or long iron, a

real nerve jangler if ever there was one, superb hole though. Wallasey is proper links golf, and as with all links the wind is the courses main defence, if it blows you’ll need to play very well to score well, if it’s still then you’re lucky, and make the most of it but do go and play Wallasey, it’s great value for money. For more information about the home of stableford please visit the website at www.wallaseygolfclub.com or ring the club on 0151 691 1024. Wallasey Golf Club, Bayswater Road, Wallasey, Wirral, CH45 8LA.

LEASOWE GOLF CLUB, THE WIRRAL When venturing to Lancashire for a golfing break do give consideration to playing at Leasowe Golf Club, this 18 classic links layout meanders its way through the Heswall Estuary and provides a fair, but tough test of your golfing skills. Many good holes grace this lovely course and I particularly enjoyed the long par 5 fourth hole that plays all along the sea wall, and on the back nine the 13th is a super hole, you drive through an avenue of trees and your approach is also tough with the bunkering around the green making it a tough taget to find.

Wallasey Golf Club

A small, but well-stocked pro shop, excellent catering and beverage choices provide a pleasant off-course experience, Leasowe is by far the least expensive course we played on our trip, and for that reason has to rate as the best value for money, this course is underated and unconsidered by many travelling golfers and I’m not sure why. My advice would be to pay Leasowe a visit, it’s excellent value for the very reasobale green fee that is asked of you. For more information about this undiscovered, highly enjoyable course please visit the website at www.leasowegolfclub.co.uk or ring the club on 0151 677 5852. WEST LANCASHIRE GOLF CLUB, BLUNDELLSANDS Having hosted some of the biggest golfing events in the UK, West Lancashire is no hidden gem. What it is however is pure class, and in my opinion it is unrivalled locally by any of the non-Open rotation courses, it’s as good a test of links golf as you’ll find, anywhere! I adored everything at West Lancashire, it requires a varied mix of length, accuracy and skill with the putter and when you combine that with the natural challenge of the contours and

Leasowe Golf Club

elements the course just about has everything you could want from a links course. I’d pick out the first hole, a par 4 of around 400 yards, it’s just really good, if the wind is in your face you’re struggling to reach in two, if it’s behind you’re going in with half a wedge, typical links golf I know but it’s a lovely start to this very fine course. Again, as in previous reviews I could describe every hole but there is no need, go and enjoy West Lancashire, it’s worth every penny of the green fee, just pray you pick a relatively still day and you’ll love this fine course. On the back nine there are some brilliant golf holes, my favourite was the 18th which played into the wind the day I was there, I hit a decent drive and was left with about 160 yards so I picked the 6 iron and knocked it in to 2 feet to deflate my opponent, he’d knocked his drive 40 yards past mine but had no answer with his approach

and ended up with a bogey against my birdie, he took it well though. Even the practice facilities are high quality here with a huge range and a very good short game area, it’s not difficult to see why West Lancashire has hosted some top amateur events. For more information about this lovely course please visit the website at www.westlancashiregolf.co.uk or ring the club on 0151 924 1076. West Lancashire Golf Club, Hall Road West, Blundellsands, Liverpool, L23 8SZ. There you have it, the Lancashire Golf coast is abundant in quality golf courses and these are but 4 to consider, if you were to choose any of these 4 courses you’ll have a highly enjoyable round, I know I did.

Southerndown Golf Club

AREA REVIEW Mid-Glamorgan Over the Severn bridge and less than 1½ hours from Bristol lie 3 of the best links courses in Wales, and arguably 3 of the best in the UK. Southerndown, Pyle and Kenfig and Royal Porthcawl are all very similar links golf courses, and they have one thing in common - a touch of class. I took myself and 3 members of my review team along to play all 3 courses and these brief reviews will hopefully give you an insight into each course and of the area, we stayed in Porthcawl and we found it to be a quaint, appealing destination that offers plenty to the travelling golfer. SOUTHERNDOWN GOLF CLUB What can you say about Southerndown? It’s not often you get to play golf surrounded by sheep, we even encountered one asleep in the bunker on the 13th hole, there must be a local rule if your ball is lying underneath a sleeping sheep – anyone? You arrive at the golf club and you are greeted by a magnificent traditional clubhouse that is steeped in history, the 18th green is in front of the clubhouse and the pro-shop, although relatively small, is well stocked with the latest golfing fashions and equipment. We had a light lunch which was of excellent quality, dining at Southerndown is a must. Our tee time was fast approaching so we got changed and ventured onto the practice area, an undulating practice green is ideal preparation for

what is to come and there are some driving nets and a range where the swing of the day can be prepared. Venturing onto the first tee at Southerndown and to your right is one of the best views I can recall having the pleasure of seeing, certainly on a golf course. I’m not going to go through the course hole by hole, I’ll mention a couple of my personal favourites and then give an overall verdict on this lovely course, you can probably already tell I’m a big fan! I really enjoyed the first hole, it’s not hugely difficult but it can be intimidating, especially if the wind blows, it plays longer than it’s yardage due it being quite steeply uphill but 26

the large green is inviting, the putting surfaces at Southerndown are very good, better than they look, a feature of links greens as many of you will know. Hole 1 is a strong opening hole and should you secure a par or better you’ve started very very well. A well laid out front 9 offers you both opportunity and danger, the gorse is never far away from the fairways and greens but it’s very playable and more importantly very enjoyable.

Starting the back 9 and feeling mildly content with the opening 9 holes the tenth is a tough par 3 surrounded by bunkers and a tricky sloping green, I suspect many a bogey have been posted on this hole due to the difficulty of the putting surface. This excellent course keeps on giving but it also keeps testing you, and you’ll need to keep your tee shots straight all the way through the back 9, do this and you’ll be stood on the 18th tee with a good chance of playing to your handicap, and what a finishing hole awaits you. Easily my favourite hole on the course the tee shot is played to a split fairway that is wider than it looks but that’s only half your problem, the approach is not easy either, a mid to long iron 2nd to a green protected by 2 well placed bunkers on the left side, if you’re on the top plateau in the fairway these bunkers are on your line to the pin, it’s a truly great finishing hole. So there you have it, completely natural to the end and a superb links course, the 1st and 18th were my 2 favourite holes but there are lots to choose from, as a whole the course is intimidating enough to make you nervous but there is enough room if you hit it solidly to score well, it’s just really enjoyable and you’ll definitely want to go back, I know I do. To find out the latest offers at Southerndown view the club website at www.southerndowngolfclub.com or give the club a ring on 01656 880476. Southerndown Golf Club, Ogmore by Sea, Bridgend, CF32 0QP.

PYLE & KENFIG GOLF CLUB A few miles west from Southerndown lies another links course, well-known for being a cut above, Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club awaits you’re A-game. Another traditional clubhouse, full of historical ambience is a delight to frequent, and as pro-shops go this is one of the best I’ve set foot in, modern, well-equipped and competitively priced, excellent start. As links courses go this is slightly different to most, the front nine is inland, and plays easier than the back nine, don’t get me wrong it’s a lovely nine holes, it’s just very different to the back nine. I particularly enjoyed the 9th hole, which unusually for a links course takes you back to the clubhouse, it’s a long downhill par 5 that the big hitter can reach in 2 but it will take most of us at least 3 to reach the green, it’s an inviting large target and with the 1st tee to the right it can be a daunting approach, no doubt you’ll get heckled if you miss the green with a wedge in your hand but that’s all part of the fun I suppose, then you cross the road and embark on what you will slowly learn is an unbelievable nine holes of some of the best links golf you will surely play. Nothing too flash about the 10th, a short par 4 that isn’t too difficult although the greens at Pyle & Kenfig shouldn’t be taken lightly, they are true but very tricky to read. Then it starts:-

27

Everything now changes, you go from a good course to a great course and the next 5 holes are ‘proper’ links holes, this is how I envisage links golf was back in the early 1900’s, and what fun they must have had, it’s awesome stuff from here. It’s not worth trying to explain, come and play the course and I’m sure you’ll quickly understand what I’m raving about, holes 11 through to 15 would easily grace any of the greatest links courses in the world, my personal favourite is the 15th, a 220yd par 3, you stand on the tee and just think Wow. 16, 17 and 18 are as tough a finish as you’ll find, long par 4’s that ‘test your mettle’, it’s one of the best 9 holes of golf I’ve played, very different to the front nine but the combination makes for a wonderful golfing experience, make sure you build your score on the front nine, then try to hang on!!! Another sublime test of golf here at Pyle & Kenfig, the 9th and the 15th were my favourites but again, that will change from person to person, whatever you do just enjoy the course, and think of how golf used to be played, surely those 5 holes on the back nine are how? To find out the latest offers at Pyle & Kenfig view the club website at www.pandkgolfclub.co.uk or give the club a ring on 01656 783093. Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, Waun-y-Mer, Kenfig, Bridgend, CF33 4PU.

ROYAL PORTHCAWL GOLF CLUB Just outside the pretty seaside town of Porthcawl lies Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Host to the 2014 Senior Open Championship, this exceptional course has received many accolades from the greatest golf writers and players alike, and it’s really not difficult to understand why, the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup have both been contested on these fine links, that says it all really! A wonderful, charming unspoilt clubhouse is the first thing that you see when you arrive at Royal Porthcawl, the course is hidden by the magnificent structure that has stood the test of time, much like the grass beyond. As a golf course it’s just superb, everything has the wow factor and every hole leaves you gasping for more, the 1st is a great opening hole, not long, not too tight but with the waves crashing against the shoreline to your left and the gorse eagerly awaiting any shots that leak to the right it’s your nerves that will get you into trouble, hit the fairway and your left with a relatively simple approach to a large flat green, sounds simple doesn’t it?, the wind aids the difficulty, if it’s benign it’s lovely, if it’s blowing it’s hell. I could describe every hole but I won’t, every hole is good, some are great, none are weak.

I will mention the 7th hole, the day I played it two of my group were close to getting hole in ones, a super 125 yard par 3, it’s a little respite from the toughness of the course as a whole, this is one of the hardest courses I have played, it’s a good job the wind didn’t blow too hard that day!

Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club

I could wax lyrical about this course for hours, it really is that good, you can read review after review on the web that will back up that statement, the only way you’ll ever know for yourself is to go and play it,

The back nine is equally as good, hole 15 is my favourite, a long par 4 that rewards length and accuracy as well as a great putting stroke, one of the great par 4’s. When you reach the 18th tee every element of your game has already been tested, however, there is one more hurdle to overcome, I would have to say that if this hole is playing into the wind it’s one of the hardest finishing holes you’ll play, the second shot to the 18th at Royal Porthcawl is epic, if Royal Porthcawl Golf Club © Charles Briscoe Knight you hit the green you can feel very proud of yourself – tremendous golf course. and for a venue of this quality there are some cracking deals to be had, see the website for further details. We are a lush green oasis in the heart of Bristol and our beautifully mature parkland course offers an exhilarating challenge for all golfers. We are proud to be a members club, but we also pride ourselves on the warmth of welcome given to visitors and guests. CLUB HISTORY The Knowle Golf Club was founded in 1905 when the three founder members were Dr. J. J. P. Lucas, P. C. Berrill and W. P. Lucas. This arose

because a few of the local sportsmen, most of whom had been closely connected with Knowle Cricket Club and Football, thought it would be good for the neighbourhood to run a golf club, so the old Race Course was prospected and a 9 hole course was laid out, with one hole somewhere approaching half a mile in length. Details of Stroke and Bogey Rounds of this period are lost but probably the 30

caddies of those days, kept the tally, stroke by stroke, and it is rumoured that arithmetic was at a premium. You can read more about the history of Knowle Golf Clube here http://www.knowlegolfclub.co.uk/club_history.php

COURSE REVIEW THE COURSE

At 6047 yards off the white tees Knowle is not long, there are 3 par 5’s, 10 par 4’s and 5 par 3’s making the par 70. Deceptively undulating, the course is a test in every way, accuracy is a requirement. Don’t be surprised to see a deer crossing your fairway here as nature and golfer are very much aligned at this very impressive parkland course.

fine par 3, a feature here at Knowle, middle of the green will give you a good birdie chance. 13 is a reachable in two par 5 for the big boys, a good birdie chance, the 14th is the toughest hole on the course, a long par 4, a par is to be savoured. Holes 15, 16 and 17 are all strong holes, a par 3 followed by 2 par 4’s, straight hitting required. A lovely

stroke. A well-equipped pro shop and large, modern clubhouse compliment the very fine course here at Knowle making it one of the most welcoming clubs in the area.

downhill par 5 completes your round, a chance to finish with a birdie or better!

all downhill so that shortens the hole but it’s still a mid-iron, there is a way to run it on but you need to be very accurate so carry the ball all the way onto the green and trust your strike will stop it on the putting surface. It’s intimidating from the tee as behind the green the hedges create the impression the out of bounds is closer than it really is. There are enough subtle breaks on the green to make the putting tricky also, just an all-round great hole.

FAVOURITE HOLE

Not a difficult choice for me, the 6th is one of the finest par 3’s you will play, it’s

FRONT NINE

In my opinion the harder of the two nines here, you open with a short but tough par 4, the uphill second shot tests you early, accurate tee shots are needed on 2 and 3 and the 4th is another uphill hole where club selection is key. The 5th is a good chance of a birdie at just 315 yards, the first of the par 3’s is the 6th hole, a mid to long iron for the average player, a super par 3. The 7th is a risk reward hole, another chance for a birdie, the well-bunkered 8th is a great par 3, the two tier green causes problems for the best player. Hole 9 takes you back to the clubhouse, keep your tee shot to the right to avoid the large tree interfering with your approach.

BACK NINE

You start your inward nine with the 10th hole, an uphill par 3 that should provide a birdie putt, the 11th allows you to hot the driver, the fairway really is very generous, keep your approach to the right as the green slopes markedly from right to left. The 12th is another

OFF THE COURSE

Knowle benefits from excellent facilities, the driving range can be utilised, situated to the left of the 16th fairway it’s a fair distance from the clubhouse but if you allow enough time it’s ideal for warming up properly prior to your round. A large undulating putting green next to the first tee allows you to perfect your putting 32
