Town Crier Competition
Recycled Laptops Wiltshire Online is committed to removing the barriers to getting online and we are pleased to announce the continued success of our refurbished, low cost laptop scheme. The laptops are donated by Wiltshire Council, are refurbished and set up ready to use for under £60. Those eligible include the over 60s, those with a disability, on low incomes and carers and a total of 242 laptops have been purchased by those eligible. We have a further 100 available for distribution and approximately 100 are still being refurbished.
Claire Cheeseman, the winner of September’s Book Competition receives her signed copy of ‘The Murder of Crows’ from Chippenham author Wil Hulbert. Fittingly Claire hails from Yatton Keynell, where the Bell Inn and St Margaret’s Church both feature in the novel. The Murder of Crows is a fascinating blend of fact and fiction surrounding the Great Plague and Great Fire of London centering on the fact that local man John Woodman from Kellaways plotted the fire in Chippenham. Wil’s book became a number 1 bestseller on Amazon and interest has been raised by the recent ITV four part period drama, The Great Fire. Wil is signing copies of his book at the Chippenham Winter Festival in Emery Gate on Saturday 29th November. You can also have another chance to win a signed copy by entering the Town Crier Christmas Competition on page 28.

We are already developing a waiting list for laptops for eligible recipients. If you know of a partner or charity that is working with individuals who meet the eligibility criteria and who would be interested to learn more about this scheme and get involved ask them to register their interest either by calling 0300 003 4572 or emailing digitalinclusion@wiltshire.gov.uk

A Christmas Cantata by Nils Lindberg, performed to great acclaim in Sweden and the USA is based on the Christmas story and features Basie-esque settings of well-known carols, mesmerising vocal solos and lush choruses. The choir is used to singing in a jazz idiom (previous performances include Will Todd’s Mass in Blue and Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts) and this piece is a real treat for any jazz or big band fan as well as those looking for a seasonal treat. Conductor Mike Daniels is looking forward to bringing this tour-deforce to the Music Centre: “It’s got everything from gorgeous ballads to hard-swinging carols and some great solo features.” Wiltshire Music Centre, Bradford on Avon. www.wiltshiremusic.org.uk

Hollywood Actor launches Walk of Life Popular Irish actor, comedian and film director Chris O’Dowd, best known for his roles in films “Bridesmaid’s” and TV series “IT Crowd” and “Girls”, took time out of his busy schedule whilst visiting Bath this month, to help launch The Forever Friends Appeal’s 2015 Walk of Life. The Walk of Life, proudly sponsored by Kier Construction, is an annual event that challenges people across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire to walk 21 miles along the Kennet and Avon canal between Devizes and Bath to raise funds for Cancer Care at RUH Chris was in Bath this month to promote his first novel “Moone Boy” at Bath’s Komedia Club and was happy to officially launch the date for next year’s event, which is Saturday 16th May 2015. Over 300 people signed up to take part in the 2014 Walk of Life, some to celebrate the memory of lost loved ones, others to fundraise in support of friends or family members who are being treated at the RUH. Many were brave enough to take on the full 21 mile challenge, whilst others chose to walk 12 miles in the morning from Devizes to Bradford-On-Avon or 9 miles in the afternoon from Bradford-On-Avon to Bath. This year’s event was a huge success, raising over £40,000 for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign. People are now being encouraged to sign up early for 2015 to kickstart their training and fundraising. May 2015 will see the Appeal organizing the eighth annual Walk of Life event, which was created in 2008 in memory of Vanessa Kyte – a remarkably inspirational mum, daughter, sister, wife and friend who was diagnosed with cancer in the year 2000. Seven years on, Vanessa passed away at her home in Rudge with her family around her and this weekend will see the seventh anniversary of Vanessa’s death. Vanessa’s sister Nic Noble comments: “Seven years have passed since Ness, my amazing fundraising sister, said goodbye. The total raised at this year’s event was incredible, and thank you so much, but painfully I am reminded about why we do the Walk of Life. Each year, another dear person is touched by cancer and shows me how fantastic the RUH’s Oncology team are at dealing with this disease and why we need the new Cancer Centre to help encompass them and the community. You can now register to take part in next year’ Walk of Life online, so when you’re thinking “I need a challenge!” over the Christmas period, do remember me and please sign up!” The Walk of Life 2015 is a positive walk to celebrate life, and sets off from Devizes Wharf, heads along the Kennet and Avon canal through Bradford-On-Avon and finishes just off the canal pathway in Sydney Gardens,

Bath. Walkers can choose to walk 9, 12 or 21 miles and are encouraged to get sponsorship towards a pioneering new Cancer Centre. One in three people are affected by cancer and everyday lives are changed by this disease. The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising £8.5million towards the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre. This Cancer Centre will be a state of the art building, with every part designed around the needs of patients with different forms of cancer. It will transform care for patients and their families at the RUH. 2015 will be the second year that construction company, Kier, has sponsored this popular annual event. Kier is working in partnership with the RUH Bath NHS Trust on the redevelopment of the hospital site. Open to both men and women, early bird registrations are now open for the 2015 Walk of Life at just £15 per place when you sign up online via The Forever Friends website. We hope that as many people as possible will take advantage of our early bird online registrations between now and Christmas. To sign up to help better Cancer facilities for patients and their families at the RUH, simply visit: www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk” Volunteer marshals are located on various locations along the Walk of Life route – handing out water, refreshments and encouragement. Please contact the Appeal if you would like to volunteer your time to help marshal at the event. To sign up for the 2015 Walk of Life online visit www. foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk or call the events team on 01225 825823 for more information.

Are your passwords and data safe? D
ATA theft is not a new crime. The theft of data and passwords, both personal and corporate, for malicious use, capital gain and just for kicks is a daily pursuit for hackers and cybercriminals. Last year was a challenging year for data breaches with over 800 million records lost in 2,164 separate incidents, nearly doubling the previous highest year on record. The EU has imposed new data protection legislation, meaning severe fines for organisations that suffer data breaches in the future. SafeToGo (www.safetogo.eu) is a hardware encrypted USB3.0 memory flash drive which is being used by individuals in all sectors including schools, government and healthcare organisations to safeguard against data theft. The drive has many benefits including locking itself after a set amount of time if it has been left unattended in your computer. If lost or stolen the drive cannot be accessed without your master password and will lock down the drive after a number of failed attempts. Cardwave’s latest product is ShieldToGo, (www.shieldtogo.com), a powerful and secure mobile password manager and storage device. It enables you to securely store, manage and safeguard sensitive passwords, data and files, not in ‘The Cloud’ but in

a single device. The rule with passwords is simple: the more complex, the better the level of security it provides. However, expecting people to remember long, nonsensical combinations is unrealistic. A typical 25–34 year old will have in excess of 40+ online login passwords from email, ebay, paypal to bank logins (in comparison to four or five logins ten years ago). Often, users pick the same password for many different services, which is ill-advised. If you sign up for an account on a website which gets hacked your password could find its way into the hands of criminals who would then be able to access your online bank account and other important sites. ShieldToGo provides the facility to create complex encrypted passwords and then manages the task of remembering and logging in for you securely. The 8GB drive also gives you space to store your most sensitive files. Identity theft risks are greatly reduced as well as your daily frustration of trying to remember all your passwords. If you have one resolution for 2015 make sure it is to ensure your data and passwords are safe and secure. To find out more about both products and the full list of their features and benefits visit our product websites listed above or visit our company website at www.cardwave.com

Calne War Memorial Restoration Fund Calne Royal British Legion is raising funds to help with the restoration of the War Memorial ready for November 2018. To raise awareness of the project we take a look at some history of the politics and issues that happened after 1918: Provision for a War Memorial in Calne was discussed at a council meeting on 10th March 1919. The council considered it was time for of a War Memorial and a public meeting was held on 22 May 1919. Many points were made by the worthies of the town on issues of type, size, cost and location, the idea of building three homes for poor soldiers of Calne was also put forward as a memorial. At a meeting on the 16th June 1919 four locations were put forward as suitable for a War Memorial, being The Green, The Wharf, Central Park and The Square. Much discussion was given to all the proposals but no decision was made other than “experts” should be asked to report on all four sites. By the 4th Dec 1919 the “experts” reported that out of the four sites Central Park would be the best location and mention was also made of The Strand as a possible location. Lord Kerry who was at the meeting was invited to give his thoughts on the proposals. He was sure that all the locations had something to offer but that Central Park was to be considered a very good site, and as the Town Hall was originally located there it would, due to its civic connections of the past be the better location. On the 20th May 1920 The Gazette and Herald reported that the Committee had been considerably embarrassed by the rising costs of the proposed War Memorial. The cost of £1200 being an extravagance and that the money may not be forthcoming. Consideration was given to a design by Sir Reginald Bloomfield RA of a Cross and that the public may consider it a cheaper option as originally plans were for an obelisk. The committee depended on the good will and contributions for it to succeed. Letters to the editor and articles in the Gazette and Herald during 1920 showed considerable disagreement with locations and cost to be incurred in the building of the memorial and other locations were forthcoming. The minister of the Calne Free Church recommended Wessington Avenue, that it would “provide more dignity or repose and there would be less dust and a better surrounding”. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01249 811068
By August the Committee did not feel able to proceed with the project in its full scheme due to the cost and that the public must decide what was to be done. Sir Reginald Bloomfield, RA the architect expressed his opinion that if a cross is erected without the layout proposed in Central Park the effect would be very inferior to what would be given by the complete scheme. On the other hand if a Cross alone was erected the cost would be about £750. If necessary the full layout could be added in years to come. A public meeting was called and all the locations were again discussed with another location being added to the list, St Mary’s church yard. The Archdeacon who was at the meeting was consulted and depending on formal permission from the Ecclesiastical Authority it was very likely there would be no problem siting the Memorial in the church yard, depending on a decision of parishioners that it is their choice. After full discussion on the merits of locating the memorial in the church yard the decision was made that due to shortage of funds, the plans of Sir Reginald Bloomfield’s “Cross of Sacrifice”, which was submitted in February 1920 to be assembled in Central Park was altered to be assembled in St Mary’s church yard. The building was begun by Messer’s Blackford and Sons of Calne after being manufactured by Messer’s Jenkins and son of Torquay. The Memorial is 19 feet high with a bronze cross, is made of Portland stone and inscribed with 133 names of the fallen from the First World War. (After 1945, the names of the fallen from the Second World War were added). The Marquis of Lansdowne unveiled the memorial on the 18th May 1921 at a public ceremony attended by Families of the fallen, Comrades , Civic dignitaries, Scouts, Fire Brigade and members of the public. The War Memorial in this Centenary year requires conservation. To that end the Calne and District Branch of The Royal British Legion is raising funds to help with its restoration and bring it back to its former condition. Stone replacement, cleaning, letter re-cutting and painting are required as are path repairs. We have placed donation boxes around the town and, as in the early years rely on good will and contributions for it to succeed. Thanks go to Rod Rhodes of Calne for his research (abridged) into the history of The Calne War Memorial. For more information please call 01249 848128 E-mail: rblcalne@hotmail.co.uk

d SALE!
Christmas Shopping
Make the most of the winter sales Everyone loves a bargain, and at this time of year there are plenty of them around, but it can be easy to get carried away. Here are some tips on how to stay in control of what ends up in your shopping basket! Decide what you need first. Go through your wardrobe to check for gaps, scout through your cupboards, and think about what you actually use. There’s no point filling up with stuff just because there’s 70% off! Do your research. Take a stroll down the high street or browse on line to see what catches your eye. Try on where appropriate and make a list of everything you really want , so that when the doors open you can make a beeline for it.
Go early – or late. To be sure of getting what you really want, visit the sale in the first couple of days, but if you want the cheapest prices, wait until the end. Stick to a budget. It’s easy to get carried away in the heat of the moment and compromise on what you are willing to pay. If you are too weak to say no in the face of temptation, take cash and only spend what you have. Take a sale buddy. They could be the head of reason when you choose to ignore all the above advice! Happy shopping!
By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
Return that faulty gift If you receive a Christmas Gift that turns out to be faulty, then under the Sale Of Goods Act the purchaser will be entitled to a refund (usually limited to a few weeks), a repair, or replacement (within a 6 months period, but often 12 month due to product warranties). Legally the contract is between the purchaser and the seller, so it is usually best if the person who bought you the gift goes back to the vendor with the receipt. If the item was bought online, you have the same rights under the Sale of Goods Act. However, there are also a new set of Regulations which give further protection: the Consumer Contracts Regulations. These mean that from the moment you place an order, you have 14 days after you receive the goods to legally cancel it. Of course with both sets of regulations there may be exclusions. The good news is that many stores and suppliers go beyond the statutory requirements. Some refund or exchange goods all year round, even when they are not faulty and you have simply changed your mind. Many are even more generous around Christmas and offer a longer returns period with the opportunity to have a gift receipt which you can pass on to the recipient, so that they can change the item if required.

As the years progressed, the colouring book was replaced with a series of craft sets, and I remember one year spending ages knitting an extremely long scarf! Crafting helps children to develop their imagination, express themselves and explore new ideas or concepts. The creative process brings feelings of satisfaction and pleasure, and builds children’s confidence in their ability to make their own decisions and choices. Crafting is a great way to learn how to solve problems, follow directions and develop skills such as cutting, measuring, gluing and sewing. It can also give family members the chance to spend quality time together in a shared activity. Christmas offers children the opportunity to hand make gifts for friends and family members. From home-baked treats to a painted plant pot or a decorated photo frame, there is no end to the possibilities. Craft sets also make ideal stocking fillers and promise hours of entertainment. Loom bands are extremely popular right now, knitting is enjoying a revival, finger puppets are always lots of fun and card-making, jewellery kits and scrap books are guaranteed winners. You could also consider science and modelling kits. Have fun getting crafty this Christmas!
Toys For Boys?
M
Y sister and I grew up with an older brother and we thought nothing of spending Saturday afternoons sprawled on the living room carpet, constructing items out of his beloved Lego. His creations were always more ambitious and sophisticated than ours of course – windmills and tractors and mansions with masses of rooms compared with our rather mundane boxlike structures. Occasionally we would ditch the Lego for a session on his Scalextric racing set. We hadn’t a hope of winning, but we certainly enjoyed trying! It never once occurred to me that I was playing with ‘boy toys’ which is maybe why, when I became mother to four daughters, I happily bought them their own sets of Lego along with other ‘boyish’ toys such as remote control cars, science sets and basketball nets (they had their fair share of dolls, prams and jewellery kits too!). Like it or not, the society we live in stereotypes children according to their gender. Manufacturers influence their choice of toys with labels identifying items such as dolls and tea sets as ‘girl toys’ in their pretty pink packaging, and cars and construction sets as ‘boy toys’ in their predominantly blue wrappers. There is evidence to suggest that girls and boys do naturally select different types of toys. Experiments conducted on primates concluded that male monkeys were drawn to boy-toys like cars whilst female monkeys preferred girl-toys like dolls. There are various explanations about why boys and girls have different toy preferences. One theory suggests it is due to testosterone levels, whilst another attributes it to the way the brains are ‘differently-wired’, and there’s no doubt that nurture and socialisation also play a part. Regardless of the reason, the consensus of opinion is that if children are offered a wide range of toys and experiences, they will develop into more rounded individuals with an expanded range of thinking and skills. Just as playing with girl-toys like dolls and tea sets fosters the development of verbal and social skills that might be useful to the male population, playing with boy-toys like cars can help girls with the acquisition of spatial skills. Other ‘boy-toys’ like science sets, Lego, Meccano and K’nex help develop STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills of which there is currently a shortage in the UK workforce - and why shouldn’t girls develop these just as much as their male counterparts?! Some may argue – and I’m probably one of them – that at the end of the day whether male or female, children will be children and will naturally choose the toys that interest them the most. The important thing is to at least give them that choice!

Game On by Debbie Singh-Bhatti
I
N the early to mid 1980s, the electronics market was taken by storm when popular Arcade games were taken to the small screen and made available to play at home. Atari launched Space Invaders on its TV games console, and Nintendo created its iconic handheld game Mario Brothers in what we then thought was state of the art technology. Little did we realise what sophisticated play lay ahead as technology developed and the gaming market expanded.
In contrast, Sony has opted to keep it simple with the PlayStation One. First and foremost it is designed to play video games, although it does include free access to the Internet to watch videos, and it also comes with a handheld controller known as the Vita which allows you to continue with play whilst checking out what’s on TV. Fought with equal passion is the battle between console users and computer gamers about which platform offers the best gaming experience. PC enthusiasts claim membership of the PC Master Race, based primarily on their machines’ augmented graphical power brought about by upgrades or additions to the original hardware.
Over the years, big names have come and gone as market leaders have fought it out to claim the top spot, so that supremacy in the games console market can now be claimed by just two brands – Sony with its PlayStation and Microsoft with its X-box, with the Nintendo Wii trailing in third place. The keenest users are as passionate about their choice of gaming equipment as fans are about the football team they support. It’s known as Console Wars – the battle to establish gaming supremacy.
Though the wars and battles amongst console users and PC players continue in real life as well as on screen, the question about where it’s all heading remains. Mobile gaming on tablets and phones can be just as immersive and fun – and these units are much more portable. In addition, lowpriced apps are more attractive than expensive games which become obsolete with the launch of each new generation.
To the unbiased onlooker, they each have their merits. With the new generation of consoles launched in November 2013, the X-box One sees a shift in direction to an all singing, all dancing media hub, offering the ability to view live TV, watch DVDs and stream videos via the Internet (for a price). As well as the facility for live picture

chat similar to Skype, it also boasts built in software (called Kinect) which allows you to issue voice commands, which it obeys.
Yes, the computer gaming market has come a long way since its explosion in the 1980s, and something tells me it has much further still to go!

Buying Jewellery? Diamonds are a girl’s best friend right? Well maybe but some women don’t actually wear or even like this sort of jewellery. So how do you get it right? Rule one - Look at the jewellery she wears every day. If she always wears a fine gold chain and locket and discrete earrings then she’s probably not going to want a chunky plastic bangle no matter how ‘current’ the style. Likewise if she always wears chunky costume jewellery in bright colours it’s highly unlikely she’ll covet a dainty pearl bracelet. Rule two - Look at the colour palate she normally wears. The funky pink necklace might be the right style but if she usually wears browns and greens she might not have anything to wear it with so make sure colours tone with her wardrobe. If you want to buy precious jewellery look at her natural colouring. Silver haired women look great in silver, platinum or white gold, as do dark skinned women. Blondes look beautiful in warmer gold tones. Rule three - Consider her build. Petite women suit fine chains and tiny stones whereas those who are larger need a statement piece of jewellery which won’t accentuate their size. Choose carefully and she’ll be overwhelmed at your thoughtfulness. You’ll guarantee her a very happy Christmas indeed.

One Last Sleep ‘Til Christmas by Ashley Biffen
Homemade mince pies, a bunch of carrots and a glass of milk sit on the mantelpiece, below a stocking hangs by the crackling log fire. The reflections of the flames make the red and gold tinsel on the Christmas tree shimmer. The smell of turkey lingers from the kitchen. Pressing his face against the window the boy waits. His eyes feel heavy as he battles to keep them open. Snow throws itself in the lighten street as the clock ticks away incessantly. A scarf wrapped around a snowman’s neck waves in the wind. The boy stretches his arms; he cuts his yawn short as he spots the silhouette of a person emerging from the cut-in behind the nearby garages. Pushing the window open the boy’s face is met with the whipping of the wind. The coldness causes his cheeks to redden. The snow crunches beneath the man’s feet as he moves closer. He’s plump. Holding onto the curtains the boy leans out the window further. The man looks like an amateur gymnast attempting the splits as he attempts to regain his balance on the ice - he grips the lamppost. ‘That can’t be him,’ the boy whispers to himself. The man trudges down the street until he reaches a house with a holly wreath entwined with red ribbon swaying on the front door; he makes his way down the garden path, posts a Christmas card through the letterbox before heading back the way he came. The boy sighs heavily, shutting the window and pulling a blanket free from under the sofa, he wraps it around himself and slouches in an armchair. How much longer he wonders. His eyes ebb away as he slumps further into his chair. *** The sound of a bell resonates in his ears. Sitting up, the boy rubs his eyes. He looks over to his stocking – it’s filled with presents. He darts over to the window, ‘I’ve missed him again’.

What have the Romans ever done for us?
Spelt Bread This will be a denser loaf than you may be used to so, if you want to make it lighter, replace half the spelt flour with strong white flour instead.
by Judy Dain
L
IVING in Wiltshire this question is particularly relevant because there was so much activity going on in the county as a result of the Roman occupation. Some of our major roads still in use today were built by them and before the parish of Calne was created, a minor Roman settlement existed with an important trading centre in the area of Sandy Lane. We owe a lot in this area to these ‘invaders’. So what about their influence on what people ate? The item that sticks in my mind from my history lessons at school many moons ago was stuffed dormouse but, actually, that really didn’t really reflect the diet of the average person. In fact they introduced a lot of ingredients that improved the British diet: garlic shallots, onions, leeks, cabbages, peas, turnips, celery, radishes, asparagus plus many of the herbs we use daily: rosemary, thyme, bay, basil, mint. An increasingly popular ancient grain that had almost sunk into obscurity until recently, but has now found new life, was also a very important part of the Roman diet. The army dubbed it their ‘marching grain’ because eating spelt grain or bread made from the flour kept their energy levels up as the soldiers marched across the country. Nowadays it has come to the fore because it is so much tastier and higher in nutrition than our modern form of wheat, plus many people who have a problem with eating the average British loaf find that spelt bread is much more digestible and easy on the stomach. Maybe you will be inspired to make some spelt bread - the recipe is above. If you’ve never made bread or always produced ‘bricks’ then come and learn how at one of our Basic Bread Making classes at Vaughan’s Kitchen Cookery School in Devizes. See the website for details: www.vaughanskitchen.co.uk

How to Choose a Turkey, Duck or Goose
We all want our Christmas dinner to be special and a meal to remember for the right reasons! So how can you make sure that your bird is the best choice?
Look for birds with unblemished skin, and if buying fresh check whether they will be dressed or whether you will need to do additional preparation.
First take the time to buy your meat from a source you trust. You might prefer a trusted butcher, farm shop or mail order company.
Consider carefully the size of the bird you require. General recommendations allow around half a pound or 225 g per person for boneless meat and three quarters of a pound or 340g per person for meat with a bone in. Of course appetites vary and you may want to buy larger deliberately, in order to have enough for leftovers.
Knowing how your meat has been reared and where it came from can help you determine the likely quality of the meat. Usually higher quality comes from younger animals that are subject to greater welfare standards. Of course prices will also reflect this so battery-reared birds will be much cheaper than those which have been subject to a mainly organic diet and free-roaming.

by Jill Crooks, Media Coordinator Wiltshire Air Ambulance JANUARY 2015 heralds a new milestone for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) as the charity starts operating its own helicopter. The partnership with Wiltshire Police for the shared helicopter/air ambulance comes to an end in December 2014 after 24 years due to the police joining the National Police Air Service. The new air ambulance is a state of the art helicopter and is the first Bell 429 to operate as an air ambulance in the UK. It is more powerful, faster and is bigger inside than the joint helicopter.
As a consequence of operating its own helicopter, the charity will have to raise £2.5 million a year (£6,850 a day).
Last year (2013) WAA attended 703 incidents and conveyed 309 patients to hospital. Since it started operating in 1990 it has attended almost 15,000 missions. As a consequence of operating its own helicopter, the charity will have to raise £2.5 million a year (£6,850 a day). The charity receives no Government funding and relies entirely on public donations. Mandy Clarke, chairman of Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charitable Trust, said: “The Bell 429 is an excellent helicopter and we are taking on a helicopter that is not just fit for purpose for today but is future proof for us. “The people of Wiltshire are very generous in their support for Wiltshire Air Ambulance and we still need their support and to raise vital funds for us. Even a little bit makes a difference. It’s down to the people of Wiltshire that we are still here and flying for them.” The colours of the new helicopter are yellow and the distinctive Wiltshire green and the charity has a new logo. Dark Road
Gig
..............................................................................................
...............................................
Ian Rankin and Mark Thompson
A
S Rankin says in his introduction, Dark Road was written in response to a query about why we see crime fiction dominating television and bestseller lists, but not on the stage. ‘It started,’ he says, ‘almost as a dare’. Following a widely praised run at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, the script has now been released in book form. Initially, there were some groans from die-hard fans who had hoped for, or expected, the inclusion of Rankin’s most famous creation, John Rebus. But whilst the characters here inhabit the same world, Rebus is not present even as a shadow, and the play works better for it. Reading a script is different to reading a novel, and it is clear that Rankin found the process different too. Here the dialogue has to carry and develop the characters. The central character, Isobel MacArthur, is as successful on the page as reviews suggest she was on the stage. As she approaches retirement from a distinguished career, Scotland’s first female Chief Constable is drawn to revisit one of her earlier cases: that of Alfred Chalmers, convicted for the murders of four young women twenty five years previously. Chalmers has always protested his innocence, and the key evidence in the case has been conveniently lost… The scenes between Isobel and Chalmers are tautly written and full of menace. As a counterpoint, the black humour of Frank Bowman and the tapes of the original interviews, which Isobel obsessively revisits, take us into familiar territory. Unfortunately, the relationship between Isobel and her daughter is less convincingly drawn, and this weakens the ending – perhaps here the gap between page and performance is most evident. Nevertheless, the script will stay with you, and there is certainly evidence that the dare has paid off. Here’s hoping it is not Rankin’s last foray into scriptwriting. 52

Simon Armitage
S
IMON Armitage is best known as a poet, but he is also an accomplished lyricist, reviewer and all round storyteller. Subtitled ‘The Life and Times of a Rock Star Fantasist’, it documents his experiences with music, from his early listening habits, through teenage obsessions and on to his final acceptance as an adult of the fact that he will never be a rock star. This is swiftly followed by his decision to form a band and attempt to become just that. Whilst this is an ideal book for dipping into – most of the sections can be read out of sequence – it is almost impossible to stop once you begin. Each anecdote leads on to another: from the experience of selling a guitar on E-bay, to memories of school domestic science lessons. Part observation, part autobiography, the stories are often laugh-out-loud funny, yet the next page will bring a moment of sadness, and even tragedy. In particular, the lyrics from ‘Songbirds’ and ‘Feltham Sings’, the two musical documentaries in which Armitage turns the stories of prisoners into songs, are intelligent, well-crafted and heartbreaking. For many, it is the recognition of themselves in the tales that Armitage tells that creates the greatest sense of engagement. Readers of a certain age will cringe as he recalls his punk phase (and thank their mums that their 18th birthday cake was not quite as unusual) and then realise that they too are now amongst the oldest gig-goers. This is also very much a book about Yorkshire. But even if you don’t get the reference to Corporation Pop, it is handily explained... All in all, an excellent read, either at one sitting, or as a pick-and-mix view of modern life.
Supertato Sue Hendra

S
UE Hendra will be familiar to parents everywhere as the creator of Barry, Keith and Norman – a fish, a cat and a slug respectively, all with

rather odd features. Her latest creation is Supertato – a crime fighting superhero who just happens to be a spud. Strange? Not if you have already read about the fish with fingers! As Hendra points out at the start, some vegetables are frozen for a good reason. The supermarket is thrown into chaos when a pea escapes from the freezer, intent on causing mayhem. Luckily Supertato is there to save the day, facing up bravely to the threat of the masher in order to ensure that the veggies can live safely again. Be warned, though – some editions of the book come with stickers. Once they have finished laughing, your children may find them. And you may be summoned downstairs to a decorated kitchen with the words, ‘Mummy, there seems to be an escapee (geddit?) on the loose…’ To be honest, if they can get that absorbed in the book, it has to be a good thing!
Smelly Bill’s Smelliest Stories Daniel Postgate
...........................................
I
T can be difficult to choose books for newly confident readers: they are happy to say that they are ‘too big’ for picture books, but faced with a paperback novel they can feel out of their depth. So, this omnibus edition of Smelly Bill stories is perfect. It’s shaped like an ordinary paperback, but with a generous balance of pictures and text, it is an ideal ‘halfway house’ choice. The book contains three Smelly Bill stories, each told in lively rhyme. The first introduces our hero, the scruffiest and stinkiest dog in town, and his arch enemy, the determined Great Aunt Bleach, who battle over Bill’s bath. In the second story Bill calls on his friends (including Stagnant Stan and Putrid Pete) for support, only to find that an army of aunties await, clutching their bottles of shampoo and bars of soap. And, in the final instalment, Bill finds love with Peachy Snugglekins, forcing him to clean up his act, if only temporarily. Each story moves along at a rattling pace; keeping the reader’s interest, while slipping in a range of different vocabulary. Not only will young readers laugh a lot, they will also learn a range of new words as they go. And given the charming nature of every tale, you won’t mind taking over if it gets too tricky.

Positive Mind… Positive Christmas…
Seven ways to avoid overindulging this Christmas
by Liz Taylor
Health, Wellness, Beauty & Lifestyle Advisor missliztaylor@hotmail.com
In a new Health, Wellness, Beauty & Lifestyle column for the Town Crier, Liz Taylor looks at Christmas overindulgence and tells of her own experience.
T
HE dictionary definition of overindulgence: excessive, desire, binge – does that sound like you during the festive holidays? What can we do to curb this strange compulsion that slips into our stomachs and minds during this time? There are some simple actions we can put in place that won’t cost a penny - all that is needed is strong willpower. And remember it’s OK to want to stay healthy throughout the festive season – it’s all about CHOICE!
My Story ... On the 23rd December 2012 I knew exactly how uncomfortable my waistband was going to be over the next couple of weeks. I made a pact with myself that I was never going to have that uncomfortable bloated feeling ever again. I started with my mindset, positivity, self development, affirmations and three litres of water a day. Two stone lighter, feeling super positive, fit and loving life I now know it all comes down to the training the MIND first and foremost. 54

Drink a large glass of water instead of reaching for snack foods, this can buy you time to evaluate whether you are really hungry or if your body is simply telling you it needs hydrating. Large plates are very fashionable, so be mindful and only use the inner circle of the plate to hold the food. My tip is to buy yourself a small, pretty individual plate just for yourself. It’s not just food, alcohol can make you feel uncomfortable too. By diluting the alcoholic beverage you instantly cut down on the alcohol content and in turn you create a longer drink. Add a soft mix and plenty of ice to shorts, lemonade to beers and soda to white wine. Avoid eating simple carbohydrates like bread, rice, pasta and cereals after 6pm – this has worked wonders for me. Share the chocolates rather than eat the whole box. A 20 minute brisk walk can curb your appetite. If you have no willpower there are a selection of products on the market which will help you feel fuller and can help reduce your calorific intake (when used in accordance with the instructions).
More tips for a healthy mind & lifestyle in the next issue.

’tis the Season to be Sneezing!
I
t’s Christmas at last! I really do enjoy the lead up to Christmas, the carols, the decorations, the mince pies, the lights in the town and the general prettiness of everything. We buy a real tree for our waiting room every year which makes our lovely Reception feel festive and gives it a deliciously Christmassy smell. Sadly, our underfloor heating doesn’t provide a very nurturing environment for a cut tree and it means that some poor soul has to combat crawl under the tree to water it daily. Over the weeks the branches start to droop and the needles go all crispy and by Christmas Eve the poor tree resembles a rather absurd Dalek. Not the image one tends to associate with Christmas, so I try and leave it until the last few weeks of December before it goes up. On Twelfth Night, baubles are often thrown away with the tree, trapped deep in the body of the Dalek. Our Christmas works ‘do’ is always eventful, with the highlight being the Secret Santa. Someone always gets something inappropriate given to them with much hilarity. This month we have started the gift giving early but sadly, instead of cheap novelties, my colleagues have been giving each other the rather unwelcome gift of a cold. This appears to have passed its way around each and every one of us without exception. Affectionately referred to as ‘Megan’s cold’, as it seems poor Megan, one of our lovely Receptionists, was one of the first to get it. We all complain to Megan, rather unfairly, ‘Megan, I’ve got your cold!’ However, this scolding seems unjust as I am sure it was someone else’s cold before it was Megan’s. In fact, colds are caused by more than 200 viruses but those most responsible belong to one of two groups, rhinoviruses and coronaviruses. When we contract a cold the virus attacks the lining of the nose and throat. We get a runny nose because the virus causes inflammation in these areas, producing more mucus and causing us to sneeze. Picking up coughs and colds around Christmas time is unfortunately a side effect of the season. It tends to be prevalent this time of the year because we spend more time indoors with other people. However, it is not exclusively a winter bug. Adults can expect to have two to three colds a year and for children this can be as many as eight, as their immune system is more vulnerable to infection. Because there are so
56
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
many different viruses which can cause a cold it is possible to have several different colds, one after the other, this is sometimes why it can feel that a cold seems to have lasted a long time. Often it is not the same bug, but several cold viruses tag teaming each other and taking advantage of your weakened defences. Your GP sadly cannot prescribe anything for the common cold but your local Pharmacist can certainly advise you on the best over the counter remedies to help alleviate symptoms. Maintaining a healthy diet and taking plenty of fluids is also recommended. As a Mother, Practice Manager and all round know-itall-nelly I make it my business to tell people off if they cough or sneeze into their hands. Prevention is our best defence against catching and spreading the cold virus. Catch it, Bin it, Kill it is a simple routine which can help protect those around you from catching your cold. Coughing, sneezing or blowing our noses into a tissue and then throwing the tissue immediately into the bin will prevent tiny droplets from your nose and mouth getting into the environment to infect others. Washing our hands regularly and using disposable paper towels rather than shared towels is also a good idea as well as having a hand sanitizer about, widely available this time of year in handbag sized bottles and wipes. More information about prevention and symptom management is available from the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. Whilst unpleasant, symptoms of the common cold are not normally debilitating. However, if you have breathing difficulties, find blood in your phlegm or have a high temperature of over 39°C you should seek medical advice from your GP or NHS 111 (by dialling 111 on your phone). If you have visited one of the countries affected by Ebola please make your GP Surgery aware of this immediately over the phone before attending the Practice. In the meantime, I am off to buy more sacrificial baubles to feed the Christmas Tree Dalek! A very Merry Christmas from us all at Beversbrook Medical Centre - may your season be jolly and sneeze free!

Party Politics!
ANY of us look forward to celebrating Christmas with our work colleagues. It’s a chance to get out of the office and have a bit of fun. But for some employees the morning after is full of embarrassment and regret. Your behaviour at such events could seriously damage your career. Equally, if handled correctly you can also do a lot of good for your career at the annual festivities. So here are a few tips to help you be remembered for all the right reasons. Always attend - whilst you may think not attending is the safest option, it is best to go along even if it’s for just a short while as this demonstrates your willingness to be part of a team. Dress appropriately - you may be excited by the opportunity to get out of your work attire but remember that you are still with work colleagues and probably your boss. Where you are going will have an impact on how you dress but whatever the venue its best to avoid clothing that is overtly sexual. At many parties there will be alcohol and it can be tempting to over indulge, especially if the boss is paying. But it’s best to drink in moderation and alternate alcohol with water. If you feel you may be getting a little too relaxed opt for soft drinks. Remember to eat well to soak up the alcohol. Do socialise and chat to lots of people at the party. It can be a good time to build relationships with colleagues from other departments, or those you’d like to impress but don’t usually get chance to speak to, so do circulate. Don’t be boring by talking about nothing but work however. Usually some general conversation about holidays, families and hobbies will suffice and can stand you in good stead when you need to get these people on side for your next work deal. Don’t be tempted to be drawn into gossip or talk about others or the organisations latest ideas in a negative way. You never know who’s standing behind you. Of course don’t swear, be impolite or vulgar. It may be that you have fancied one of your colleagues for months ( or they become irresistibly attractive once you’ve had a few drinks), but insisting that they join you under the mistletoe or showing them your best Dirty Dance moves is not advisable. These could lead to public humiliation at the event and years of teasing and having to avoid a ‘certain someone’. It is possible to have fun at an office party, but for your careers sake, remember everything in moderation!

New Arrivals Cotswold Wildlife Park celebrates first baby Tapir birth in eight years Cotswold Wildlife Park is celebrating their first Brazilian Tapir birth since 2006. The calf has been named Lolita and was born to first-time parents Gomez and Cali. Visitors can see her exploring the enclosure she shares with her parents, alongside the world’s largest rodent species – the Capybara (see picture above). Both species are native to South America but Tapirs can also be found in Central America and Malaysia.
Lolita is not the only new addition at the Park. Other new arrivals include a baby Colobus Monkey, three Grey Mouse Lemur babies (the smallest Lemur species on earth) and the Red Pandas recently gave birth to a female cub. Visitors can see the youngsters at the Park daily from 10am (last entry is at 3.30pm).
Baby Tapirs are striking in appearance and visually differ greatly from the adults. The reason for this is survival. For the first few weeks of their lives, the mother will make sure the vulnerable calf is hidden in thick foliage in the forest while she leaves to browse. Their coats are covered with stripes and spots which mimicks the speckled sunlight on the forest floor, so the calf can brilliantly camouflage itself in the wild against predators. When Lolita was first born, visitors were unaware that a newborn Tapir was just feet away from them until keepers pointed the baby out. Cotswold Wildlife Park has a successful history breeding Tapirs as part of an Endangered Species Breeding Programme. They were one of the first large mammals in the Burford collection (which opened in 1970). Young breeding pair Gomez and Cali are proving to be excellent parents and Lolita is growing up to be a confident, independent youngster and a welcome addition to the Mammals section. Curator of Cotswold Wildife Park, Jamie Craig, said: “We have done incredibly well with this species in the past but we are delighted to have a first calf from our new pair. The initial introduction between the adults did not go exactly to plan and it was a relief to us all when they finally settled together.” 64

BOWOOD CARVING & WOODWORKING CLUB Located at Derry Hill between Chippenham and Calne
W
E cater for carvers of all levels of experience, so whether you know exactly what you are doing and just want to carve with others, or have never carved but want to give it a go, we are here for you! We think of ourselves as a friendly bunch (of men and women), who have in common a love of working with wood. Although carving is the basis of our activities, we also indulge in: • cabinet making • chair making • turning • green woodwork • restoration • miniature furniture making and carving • tool making The club was formed in 2005 by the students and tutor of a carving course at Chippenham College. When the course closed, the members needed a workshop/ studio of their own for carving and other forms of woodwork. The building, a Grade 2 listed former coaching stable, is part of the Lansdowne Arms at Derry Hill and we are grateful to the Lansdowne Estate and Wadworths Brewery for allowing us to use it. For new carvers we can offer project ideas, a selection of tools, your first piece of wood, guidance to get you started and support as you learn. The only requirement of new members, apart from paying your sub, is the ability to use your hands and an interest in the subject (tea/coffee making ability may occasionally be required too!) Your first two hour session is free so that you can decide if carving is for you. 68
We are open on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7pm until 9pm, as well as Saturday mornings between 10am and 12.30pm, and Thursdays between 10am and 4.30pm. The Thursday and Saturday sessions run subject to demand and times can vary. We are always keen to attract new members and we have space for around ten carvers to work at the same time. For more information and photos of the club and some of our work visit our website: www.bowoodcarvers.co.uk

Motoring Mayhem
I
seem to be making a habit of being transported through airport terminals in a wheelchair. Two years ago it was because of a sudden onset of sciatica while on holiday in Spain, this time it was my bicycle. On the evening of the 15th of September I had a need to go to the garage, so as the weather was fine, rather than take the car I decided to pedal there instead. I set off about 5.30 from home, using the back road through Compton Basset and Bushton. I had almost reached Lyneham when, turning a corner on a slight downhill slope at Preston Lane, the front of the bike suddenly collapsed and I was pitched headfirst over the handlebars. My head hit the road hard (good job I wear a helmet) and next second I was sliding along the road tangled up with the bike. When I came to a very painful halt my first thoughts were to get myself and the bike off the road as the accident had thrown me to the opposite side. I quickly looked at the bike and could see that the front wheel had come adrift and jammed between the forks and the frame. As I tried to stand my right foot hurt like hell and it felt as if I had just done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. At that moment a man driving a pickup truck turned the corner, stopped and helped me get the bike off the road. He then offered me first aid but I declined and asked if he could instead get me and the bike to work where I had a first aid kit and could phone ‘R’ to come and get me in the van. After he kindly dropped me off at the garage I performed some first aid on the large graze on my elbow and had a look at my rapidly swelling ankle. ‘R’ soon came to collect me so I put the damaged bike in the van and she drove me home to a hot cup of tea and a bath heavily laced with TCP. OUCH! After a rather uncomfortable night, the next day I decided that I should make a visit to Chippenham Hospital Minor Accident Unit. The nurse I saw diagnosed a badly sprained right ankle and duly issued me with a pair of crutches to use for a few days. When I got home I phoned the insurance company to report the accident hoping to get the bike and some of my damaged kit replaced, and then spent the rest of the day with my foot up with the occasional application of a bag of frozen peas.
70
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
Unicycle! The next day I hobbled out to have a better look at the bike and take photos for the insurance claim. The damage to the frame didn’t seem too bad so thought about replacing the damaged forks. After checking online I discovered that my make of bike had had a worldwide recall to have the front forks replaced after a series of breakages. As soon as I discovered this I phoned the shop where I bought the bike and the result is that the bike manufacturer is going to replace the whole bike and all my damaged kit. As for my injuries; well we shall have to see. So you see this is how I came to be transported through Bristol and Alicante airports in a wheel chair once again as our holiday was only 5 days after the accident and I still couldn’t walk more than a few paces. The swollen ankle curtailed many activities while away but 5 weeks later it is a lot better but not perfect. The funny thing is despite this being the worst injuries I have ever had I can’t wait to get back in the saddle, let’s hope the new bike doesn’t ever become a unicycle. Merry Christmas to all and Happy motoring!

I’ll Give You the Moon By Tom Hancock
I
T’S inspired songs, controls our tides and is Earth’s nearest neighbour, but how often do you actually look up at moon? Dark, clear, frosty winter nights might be the perfect time to start. Binoculars are a better place to start than telescopes because they are easier to handle for beginners. An ordinary pair of binoculars – available very cheaply – will do just fine initially. Astronomy at its most basic is about magnification and light-gathering power. Even a moderate form of power, like those provided by a pair of 7×50 binoculars, reveals 7 times as much information as the unaided eye can see. The moon is a great place to start for budding astronomers. If ultimately you want to see deep-sky objects inside our own Milky Way galaxy – or even outside the galaxy – you’ll want to avoid the full moon because its brightness interferes with our view of fainter objects. So you’ll need to watch the phases of the moon carefully. But the moon itself is a terrifically interesting target in its own right, and well worth studying properly before moving on. The best time to observe the moon is in twilight, when the glare of the moon is not so great and more detail is visible. It’s best to start moon-gazing when the moon is just past new (waxing), and visible as a slender crescent in the western sky after sunset. At such times you’ll have a beautiful view of earthshine on the moon. This eerie glow on the moon’s darkened portion is really 74
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
light reflected from Earth on to the moon’s surface. Each month, as the moon goes through its regular phases, you can see the line of sunrise and sunset on the moon as it progresses across the moon’s face. This is the line between the day and night sides of the moon and is called the terminator line. The best place to study the moon from Earth is along this terminator line. The sun angle is very low in this twilight zone and this means the lunar features cast long shadows in sharp relief. You will also see grey areas on the moon. These are called maria, so named because early astronomers thought they were seas. In fact they are now thought to have formed 3.5 billion years ago when asteroidsized rocks hit the moon so hard that lava percolated up through cracks in the lunar crust and flooded the impact basins. These lava plains cooled and eventually formed the grey areas we see today. The white highlands, nestled between the maria, are older and they are pockmarked by thousands of craters that have formed over millions of years. Some of the larger craters are visible through binoculars. One of them, Tycho, at the six o’clock position on the moon, emanates long swatches of white rays for hundreds of miles over the adjacent highlands. This is material kicked out during the Tycho impact 2.5 million years ago. So this winter, why not wrap up warm, get out and gaze up at the moon. It’s well worth the effort.

Touched by Christmas
I
f I can get to Christmas Day with a voice left, it’s something of a triumph. Last year the doctor said it was tinselitis. Do you enter into the Spirit of Christmas? Or, perhaps you are a bit like Dickens’ Ebeneezer Scrooge. At the beginning of a Christmas Carol, he says….. Merry Christmas! ... What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, and not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented against you? If I would work my will ... every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas,” on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. Bit of an over-reaction? Christmas for most people represents shared time with family and friends. Feasting and presents. Apparently, we will eat around 7000 Calories just at lunch time on the big day (how many sprouts is that?) Having friends and family over and feasting, of course doesn’t mean that Christmas is easy. In reality, it’s jolly hard work, but before I start sounding like Ebeneezer Scrooge, perhaps I ought to remind us of life in Narnia before Aslan returned: it was “Always winter and never Christmas”. Imagine life without Christmas? Dreadful. Christmas is an annual reminder for us to experience the joy of giving because of what we have already received from God. As children’s faces light up on Christmas morning, so our hearts light up at the news told afresh: God has breathed air. God is with us and understands us. God has done all that He can and is true to His promises. God wants to forgive us and ensure that we live in heaven with him when we die. These truths echo in the words of our favourite Carols. What’s your favourite carol? Don’t say Thatcher or Vordeman! My favourite Carol changes every year. I am struck by the words from Edward Sear’s Carol “It came upon a midnight clear”: “O hush the noise, ye men of strife and hear the angels sing.” There is a hint of exasperation in those words. It’s as though Sear’s is saying, if only we would listen to the Christmas event, actually understand it and then live it, life would be so much better. Some of us have to travel a long
76
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
way, like the Wise Men, to discover this truth. Others only have to make a few small steps, like the shepherds. Some actively seek, like the Wise Men. Others are confronted with unquestionable evidence, like the shepherds. Some come with a lot of worldly wealth, like the Wise Men. Others come with little or nothing, like the shepherds. What is important, is that no matter where we are coming from, we engage afresh with the mind-blowing profundity of the Christmas message. One of the lovely Christmas traditions we have borrowed is that of kissing under the mistletoe. A kiss is an expression of love, but human love can be all too fickle. Remember, it was with a kiss that Judas betrayed Jesus. If human love and relationships ever threaten to let you down, don’t forget that divine love is faithful and trustworthy. At Christmas, we see that God doesn’t let us down. In fact, God is true to all that was promised in ancient times. I began this article by quoting Ebeneezer Scrooge. The name Ebeneezer is a Biblical name. After the Israelites regained the Ark of the Covenant by repenting and defeating the Philistines, the prophet Samuel set up an altar to the Lord, calling it Ebeneezer, meaning “the Lord has helped us”. Ebeneezer, perhaps used deliberately by Dickens, expresses the wonder of conversion and a heart transformed. At the end of his book, Dickens writes of Ebeneezer Scrooge … Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and, knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins as have the malady in less attractive forms. His own heart laughed: and that was quite enough for him. Merry Christmas

Garden Power! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti
G
ARDENING is a bit like Marmite: you either love it or you hate it. But whatever your reasons for doing it, there is a way to make it quicker, easier and more effective - power tools! You should opt for the lighter-weight, less powerful, electrically operated versions if your garden is on the small side, and choose the heavier, more powerful, petrol-operated gadgets for larger lawns and longer hedges. Cordless electric tools, powered by rechargeable batteries, are also available to allow more freedom of movement and reduce the chance of cutting your cord in half! There are four types of lawn mower – the cylinder mower that produces an even, close cut ideal for flat lawns; the rotary mower which is better for longer grass and uneven lawns; the hover mower which floats on a bed of air to make it easier to manoeuvre; and the hand mower which is environmentally friendly and has no running costs. In all cases, the addition of a box or bag to collect grass will save you time and energy. A trimmer keeps borders tidy, paths free of grass, and reaches areas around bushes and trees which can be difficult to access with a mower. Hedge trimmers have two blades which work against each other rapidly. Trimmers with double action blades are more efficient than single action trimmers where only one blade moves. Longer blades cut quicker. A 450-560mm blade is fine for an averagesized hedge, but larger or denser hedges may need one longer. The blade width indicates the maximum thickness of the branches you can cut, so a 16mm blade can cut branches up to 16mm thick. Telescopic trimmers are available for higher hedges. Blowers are useful in autumn for clearing an area of fallen leaves and directing them into a specific spot. Once collected they can be vacuumed up 78
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
along with other light debris then shredded into an attached storage bag. Blowers and vacuums can come separately, or as a combination blower vacuum. The surface of a lawn can become covered in leaves, moss and thatch (plant debris) which prevent water, oxygen and nutrients from getting into the soil. Rakers aerate the lawn and remove leaves, moss and other garden debris. Some also incorporate a scarifier with blades that push into the soil to remove moss and thatch. Shredders dispose of branches, twigs and leaves. Rapid impact shredders chop leaves and green branches finely into mulch. Crushing-shredders are quieter and are suitable for turning woody branches into chips. As shredders sometimes get blocked, look for one with a reversible option or other anti-blocking mechanism. Finally, how about a chain-saw? Used to cut down trees, lop branches and cut firewood, they are much faster than an axe, but should only be used when wearing appropriate safety gear.

Christmas Wreaths
Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, 80
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter.
Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf!

Keeping it Real!
You can also try bending the outer branches. They should be pliable - not brittle and dry – without discoloration.
I
live in a house that is divided. My husband loves real Christmas trees but in recent years I’ve talked him around to the artificial option, believing – incorrectly as it turns out – that a reusable tree is better for the planet than one that is chopped down and discarded after a few weeks. Most artificial trees are made from PVC – one of the most non-renewable, polluting, unrecyclable materials around - and consequently their carbon footprint is ten times greater than that of real ones. Shocked into realising that my fake tree is not the morally correct choice I thought, I’m now keen to join the six million Brits who opt for a real tree at Christmas. Christmas trees spring up all over the place from late November and the quality varies greatly. Before you make your choice, do a bit of fact finding about its freshness. Ask where it was grown (UK produced trees are likely to be fresher), how long it has been in stock and when it was cut. You can carry out a couple of tests yourself. Give the tree a firm tap on the ground or run a closed hand over its branches. If lots of needles fall off, chances are it’s not that fresh.
82
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
Before leaving to make your purchase, measure the height and width of your space and take a tape measure with you to check your tree. Most are trimmed to an 80% taper, which means that a 10 foot tall tree will measure 8 feet at the bottom. You should also consider how you plan on decorating your tree. The three main species – spruce, fir and pine – all have their own characteristics. Spruces and firs have short needles whilst a pine’s are long. Pine branches tend to bend, making them unsuitable for heavier ornaments. Firs have lush branches and ornaments sometimes get lost in them. The traditional British Christmas tree, the Norway spruce, is attractive but tends to drop its needles. An alternative is a “nondrop” variety like the popular Nordmann fir, which will last longer but is more expensive. To care for your tree, cut off half an inch from the base of the trunk and place in a water-holding stand. Position the tree away from sources of heat and keep it topped up with fresh water. At present, 90% of real trees end up in landfill, so after Christmas is over try and recycle! By turning your tree into wood chippings or compost you will continue to do your bit for the environment. Hopefully with this guide choosing the family tree will be a holiday highlight, not a headache!

New Year
A Happy New Year! New Year traditions from around the Globe Amazing firework displays from around the world have become a familiar sight on New Year’s news programmes. Many countries also have traditional forms of celebration dating back hundreds of years. In the UK many people observe first-footing. This is traditionally done by a young, healthy, good looking male with dark hair. He carries gifts which include a piece of coal, money, bread and salt, and should be the first person through the front door after the New Year begins. This is believed to bring good luck. Auld Lang Syne is the familiar tune that many of us sing. This represents remembrance of old friends and times spent with them. Generally credited to Robert Burns, he actually said he was merely noting the words of an ‘old man’s singing.’ He set these words to the tune of a traditional Scottish ditty ‘Can Ye Labour Lea.’ In Denmark traditions involve smashing plates. People throw broken plates on to friends’ doorsteps. This symbolises good wishes for the year ahead. Another tradition involves leaping from chairs on the strike of midnight. In Austria, New Years Eve is called Sylvesterabend which means Eve of Saint Sylvester. Suckling pig and peppermint ice cream are traditional food for New Year celebrations. Tables are often decorated with marzipan pigs, and good luck symbols made out of chocolate or marzipan in shapes such as chimney sweeps, coins, or horseshoes are exchanged. Lead is considered to be auspicious in Germany so at New Year, they pour molten lead into cold water and see what shape develops. It is believed that this predicts the future, so: heart shapes symbolize marriage, round shapes denote good luck, and a ship means a journey. People also leave a bit of every food eaten on New Year’s Eve on their plate until after Midnight, as a way of ensuring a wellstocked larder. Carp is also included, as it is thought to bring wealth. Whereas in Brazil, lentils are seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity and thus are traditionally part of a New Year’s meal. Other customs include priestesses of the local macumba voodoo cult, dressing up in blue and white for a ceremony dedicated to the god of water Yemanja. In addition, a sacrificial boat laden with jewellery, candles and flowers is pushed out from Ipenama beach in a bid to bring health, wealth and happiness. In Greece, 1st January is also St Basil’s Day. He is remembered for his kindness and generosity to the poor. Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake, is one of the special dishes that is prepared and contains a silver or gold coin. Whoever finds the coin will be lucky for the next year.

d Jo Deacon
When Christmas was almost cancelled! by Jo Deacon
Santa was having a “moody”! He’d woken up with a bad head. As he sat by the fire in his slippers He grumbled, “I should be in bed!”
The Elves, at his words, felt so awful, They picked up their tools and began To get on with the work they’d neglected, How they hurried, and scurried, and ran.
His wife sighed – “Just have a hot cocoa, An Asprin wil soon put things right.” But Santa just scowled and sneezed loudly, “Just look at that snow. What a night!”
At last Santa smiled and looked jolly. “Hey lads” he said, “Here’s what I’ll do, I’ll give you a month in Hawaii, If you work late. It’s all up to you.”
He wasn’t the only one sulking, His little elf helpers were too. They’d been working non stop – Till they thought they would drop, And they all felt that they had the flu!
Outside the reindeer were restless, Sleighbells jingled as they stamped their feet’ Now at last Santa was happy, With toy sacks piled up round his seat.
With four weeks to go before Christmas, The workshop Elves all went on strike! The dolls and the teddies were unmade, Along with the cars and the bikes.
With whiskers atwitch and eyes sparkling, His usual smile on his face, His headache was gone, His elves were at work – And Christmas was once again safe.
The Elves had been angry at Santa, They wanted three hours for their lunch. But Santa said they couldn’t have that, And called them “An ungrateful bunch!” “You get six months off on full pay lads,” Said Santa, “And that is enough!” “But when our work’s over, It’s no use,” Said the Elves,”Cos the weather’s too rough!” The Elves downed their tools, had a sit-in, While Santa stalked off in a huff. He just wouldn’t listen to reason, And by now he was getting quite tough! “We want to lie down in the sunshine”, Cried the Elves, “All we want is a tan.” “Can’t we stay in the workshop till Easter, “Make toys early! Sunbathe when we can?” But Santa was mad – wouldn’t listen. His once-jolly face wore a frown. “If you won’t make the toys for the children, I will just close the whole workshop down. I’ll tell everyone Christmas is cancelled, And I’ll make sure all children know why. I will tell them my Elves are so selfish, That they don’t care if all children cry.” 86
The Town Crier Magazine | CHRISTMAS 2014
So now, when the beaches are crowded, In the queues at the beach ice cream stall, The Elves, in their red and green swim shorts, Are all sun tanned, and having a ball!
