Back to School Special

i

By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

W

E’VE all heard of the three Rs - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - but did you know that the three Rs can also make going back to school a more enjoyable and less stressful experience for everyone concerned? It’s a different set of Rs. The first is Research. A smooth and problemfree return to school should begin by doing a bit of homework on the school or classroom and the teacher. Pay a visit, have a look around and introduce yourself and your young one. Many children worry about whether they will like their new teacher - hopefully a positive meeting will help alleviate these fears. Next, make sure you gather all the Resources your child requires in plenty of time. Don’t leave it to the last minute to find or purchase items such as uniform, supplies and school bags. Make a commitment to do it at the start of the summer before you get distracted by other important considerations - like holidays! Finally, get yourself into the new Routine a couple of days before school starts. Re-establish school bedtimes, practice packing bags and making lunches, and have a dummy run in the morning to make sure you can all get ready in time.

Buying School Shoes

Firstly, find out whether the school has specific requirements in terms of footwear. Many schools specify a colour and a maximum heel height for girls. If your child is very active go for shoes that are flexible, rugged, waterproof and easy to clean. A smooth upper with fewer seams makes cleaning easier, and patent is generally not as hardwearing as normal leather. Velcro fastenings can be ideal for younger children not yet practiced with laces. If buying shoes to last through Winter, ensure that shoes are of a closed in type rather than one of the many open top varieties. This is a particular issue with girls’ styles. Do buy properly fitting shoes to avoid blisters, discomfort, and in the worst cases bone deformities. Make sure your child is wearing the socks or tights they will wear to school when they go for a fitting. The sizing of different makes of shoes does vary, so always get professional advice. Remember too, that an alternative width or size may be required, depending on the exact shape and type of shoe chosen. Experienced fitters will include room for growth. Finally, don’t leave it until the last minute to buy shoes. There can be lengthy queues in the last week or so, and often stocks of popular sizes run out.

Armed with these three Rs you are sure of a Rewarding and Relaxed Return to school! 6

Off to Uni?

Child Safety

So you got the grades and you’re off to university. It’s a bit daunting but we have some survival tips.

Did you know that accidental injury is the second biggest killer of children in the UK?

Learn to learn – Many young people struggle with the faster-pace of study and also the fact that learning is now their own responsibility. Read Andy Northedge’s The Good Study Guide before term starts. It aims to help you learn how to sort, process and recall new information. There are separate guides for the arts and sciences. It’s good to talk - If problems occur, talk to your lecturer or tutor directly as soon as the problem arises. Don’t wait until the day before an assignment is due! Take the initiative – Make the most of tutorials. Go in armed with any questions and thoughts you might have. The more you put into university study, the more you’ll get out of it. Acknowledge disabilities - If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty like dyslexia, make yourself known to the Student Learning Service. They offer support and run advice sessions. Acclimatise – If you’re moving a fair distance from home try to spend a weekend in your new area during the summer. Familiarise yourself with the transport system and the local amenities so it won’t seem as strange when term starts. Money, money, money – Think about how you’ll manage. Talk to your parents or a trusted adult about independent living. Older people have been through similar situations even if they didn’t attend university themselves. Make new friends - Attend ‘welcome’ events and sign up for a few clubs. But don’t overcommit yourself in these early days because you’ll have a lot to deal with. In summary - Get organised, work hard and don’t forget to enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it.

Only childhood cancer accounts for more deaths. Every week in the UK one child dies in a preventable accident, and around 300 children end up in Accident and Emergency departments every day! Children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more at risk, and are also more likely to be admitted to hospital with accidental injuries. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) run awareness campaigns to explain how most accidents can be easily prevented. Parents often misunderstand the dangers their children face daily. For example, a child is hundreds of times more likely to be killed crossing a road than by a predatory kidnapper. The media focus on scare-stories, so parents over-estimate the risk of stranger danger and underestimate the risks involved in more mundane scenarios. To put it in perspective, fewer than eight children per year are murdered in the UK, whereas nearly 400 are killed in household or traffic accidents. Visit CAPT’s website www.capt.org.uk. Here are 3 top tips to keep your kids safe! 1 Make sure they STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN when crossing the road on the way to school (and on their way home). 2 Teach your kids about burn and scald risks: Don’t overfill the kettle, never use a knife to fish toast out of the toaster, take care with hairstraighteners, and always turn them off after use. 3 Make sure your child knows how to call for emergency help - they might save someone’s life! REMEMBER: Most safety is just common sense. Children’s brains are their most important defence against accidents, so let’s teach them to THINK.

Should my child have a mobile phone? W

HEN my daughter entered secondary school and started to become more independent, I decided to buy her a mobile phone to keep in touch and check that all was well. But I soon discovered that we had different agendas! She treated her mobile phone like an additional body part. It accompanied her everywhere – to the dinner table, to the bathroom, to bed. She checked it constantly, and the 300 texts per month that I thought adequate, soon got swallowed up in her incessant cyber chatter. Much has changed since then. Texting was once the major attraction, but now mobile phones can have any number of uses, from accessing social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, to using apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat and for gaming, videos and music. Mobile phones are a great way to stay in touch and they are indispensable in emergencies, but they can also be a huge hindrance. Young people are much less active, preferring online games or social media sites to sports and other activities. Conversation has been replaced by instant messaging or texting, and schoolwork for some students is suffering due to long hours spent on phones instead of on their studies or even sleep! To ensure that mobile phones remain our children’s servant and not their master, a few ground rules need to be set in place.

Seriously consider buying a basic model for their first phone. At this stage it’s all about safety, not social status or games, and the phone should be regarded as a tool, not a The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

OPEN EVENING

Thursday 18th September 6–8.30pm You are warmly welcome to come along to our Annual Open Evening to visit our highly popular mixed comprehensive school which has enjoyed record breaking exam success both at GCSE and A Level. Our school is a high performing academy, with double specialism is Visual Arts, Maths and ICT. The Corsham School has been presented with the National Award for Achievement of Excellence through Creativity and Enterprise by the Specialist Schools and Academy Trusts. For more reports and photos of the school’s many successful events this year, please visit our website where you can view our latest magazine and explore the many aspects of The Corsham School www.corsham.wilts.sch.uk toy. Only consider a smart phone when your child is much older, say 16-18 years old. Set limits for the number of texts or minutes. A monthly capped contract can help with this, or alternatively a pay as you go scheme, which will only allow a certain spend before it needs topping up again. Consider taking out insurance should the phone get lost or broken, and ask your child to contribute to the cost as they get older and are able to earn. Designate certain times when the phone should be turned off or left behind, such as at the dinner table, after 10pm, or in the bedroom - and limit the number of hours they spend on the phone to leave time for other interests.

First, decide if your child is ready for their own phone. If they are generally responsible and trustworthy and able to look after their own belongings, maybe they are. The average child receives their first phone at the age of 12. This seems like a sensible time to me.

10

The Corsham School

Finally, make sure you follow your own rules. You can’t expect your child to abide by them if you don’t, as you are their greatest role model!

Back to School Bugs By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Next, make sure they wash their hands enough - and properly! The most common way to catch illness is through the mouth, eyes or nose after the hands have been in contact with infected surfaces. A thorough wash with soap and warm water to the back of the hands, in between the fingers and around the nails for 20 seconds (as long as it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice!) - before eating or drinking, after a visit to the toilet, blowing their nose, or touching animals and waste, should be the minimum.

H

OW does it happen? Your family has enjoyed a happy, healthy six week summer holiday, but within just days of returning to school your child comes down with a cold, or develops an itchy skin condition, or catches nits. Why, when they need to be settling into a new routine and you need to be back at work, do they suddenly get ill? Like it or not, children gathering in schools is one of the main ways germs circulate in communities. Their immune systems are less mature, they tend to be in close contact, and they have ‘germy’ habits like sticking fingers or pencils into their mouths, so it is inevitable that they are going to come home with something nasty at some point. 12

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

That said, most illnesses can be avoided if a few good practices are followed. Top of the list is to make sure that your child’s immunisations are all up to date, and that all family members have had a seasonal flu vaccination, where appropriate. Prevention is definitely the best medicine.

Teach your child ‘germ etiquette’. This means staying away from other children who may be sneezing or coughing, covering their own coughs and sneezes by using tissues that should be thrown away immediately, and avoiding head to head contact with others. If your child is older, warn them about sharing items such as lipstick, lip balm, make-up, razors, creams, lotions and other personal items such as towels and sports kit. There are some germ hotspots in schools, and cafeteria trays are one of them! One survey found that there were more bacteria per square inch on a cafeteria tray than there were on a toilet seat, probably because the trays don’t get cleaned as often. If your child drops food on a tray, they should throw it away! Finally, your child can build up their immunity by getting enough sleep and exercise, eating a well balanced diet that includes lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and by drinking plenty of water. Take these preventative measures and hopefully going back to school will be a happy, healthy time for everybody!

Springboard “Wheelathon” 7th September, 2.30pm Castle Combe

SPRINGBOARD is an opportunity pre-school for children under 5 with special needs, it has been a charitable organisation based in Chippenham serving the families of North Wiltshire for over 30 years. Springboard Opportunity Group works with Wiltshire Council to provide setting based sessions for young disabled children (aged 0-5) and support for parents/carers. We have specially trained staff and equipment to ensure we can meet the needs of all children including those with the most profound and complex needs. As a charity we aim to provide additional activities to local families and all our fundraising efforts are done to support this. We need to raise approx. £50k a year to do this. The next charity fundraiser is a ‘Wheelathon’ on Sunday 7th September at Castle Combe‘s 1.8 mile race track at 2:30pm. Please bring your wheels eg bikes, skateboards or prams - there is a prize for the best dressed transport - see below for full details. Entry is £3 per child and we would love to see you.

How to choose a wedding photographer A

FTER you’ve set the date and booked your venue, your choice of photographer is probably one of the most important decisions to make about your wedding. Your photos will shape your memories for years to come, and it’s crucial that they capture the atmosphere of your special day. Photography is also likely to be one of the biggest costs of your wedding – another reason to get it just right. To give yourself the widest choice, start researching photographers as soon as you can. Visit wedding fairs, look at websites such as www.findaweddingphotographer. co.uk for ideas, and ask friends and family for recommendations. Your venue may also be able to make suggestions. Before you meet potential photographers, think carefully about what you want from them.

Most will offer prices based on how many venues you need them to attend, how long they stay with you, how many photos they take and how many you have printed. Get together a list of shots that you’d like to have taken. Your photographer will tell you the traditional groups, but you may want different combinations, family portraits, or pictures of friends visiting from abroad for example. When you have a shortlist of photographers, arrange to meet each one in person so you can see their work and get an idea of their personality. You need someone who can get everyone organised, but they must also make you feel at ease. Look at as much of their work as you can, and if possible ask to see one couple’s full album to see the story it tells, rather than a random selection of the photographer’s best shots. You will need to decide whether you prefer traditional photographs, or a more informal style, or perhaps a mixture of both. Also consider if you like colour, black and white, sepia or other effects that may be available. Look carefully at a variety of shots. In the big groups, is everyone looking at the camera? Do the happy couple look relaxed? Do you like the poses and backgrounds used? Can you see the detail in the dress, flowers and cake? How have they coped with bad weather? It’s very important to find out if photographers have wedding indemnity insurance to cover the cost of retaking your photos if something goes wrong. If not, you will need to take out your own insurance. Finally, you should think about how you want your photos to be displayed. An album is traditional, but digital versions on a website are easy to show to friends and family. Talk through different options with your photographer to make sure what they are offering is right for you.

Food & Drink

No-cook Orange Cheesecake Serves: 8-10

Method

Preparation time:

Place the biscuits inside a plastic food bag and crush them with a wooden spoon or rolling pin.

25 minutes plus chilling time Ingredients 15 digestive biscuits 6 tbsp butter, melted 400g curd or cream cheese Grated zest 3 oranges (save the segments for the decoration) 200g mascarpone cheese 100g caster sugar 3 tbsp milk 184ml pot double cream

32

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

Melt the butter. Put the biscuits into a bowl and mix in the melted butter. Put the mixture into a 23cm cheesecake tin and use the back of a spoon to spread it evenly, press it down firmly to form the base. Put the tin into the fridge to set. This takes about 30 mins. Put the curd or cream cheese, orange zest, mascarpone, sugar and milk into a bowl and mix it well with the wooden spoon. Put the cream in a clean bowl and whisk until it is the consistency of thick custard. Add to the orange mixture and mix thoroughly. Remove the cheesecake tin from the fridge. Pour the filling over the biscuit base and spread evenly. Decorate with fruit (raspberries are delicious but any soft summer fruit will do) then return to the fridge until ready to serve (at least 4 hours or overnight).

Food & Drink Energy ratings of items are displayed within stores. The highest ratings are category A, which are the most energy-efficient. Everything else being equal, a C rated fridge will generally be cheaper than an A++ one , so you might want to ask the salesperson some key questions about whether the initial price saving could compensate for a potentially larger energy bill. Actual energy consumption will also depend on how well the appliance is stocked, its location, and how well ventilated it is. To ensure your food is stored safely, you need a fridge or fridge freezer that has good solid insulation, and a robust door that seals well. So do take a look at the build quality of the appliance. It can also be beneficial to have separate drawers at the bottom of the fridge for meat or salad products, to help prevent bacterial cross contamination.

Choosing a Fridge The first thing you must decide is whether you want to buy a new fridge with an ice box, or a fridge and a freezer. The amount of frozen food you use will determine your choice. Then consider the amount and type of space you have available. Do you have one narrow but tall gap suitable for an upright fridge freezer, or more space but with less headroom which would best suit a separate larder fridge, and stand alone freezer. If you have lots of space, you could buy a separate tall fridge and a separate tall freezer, or an American style fridge freezer. Compact fridges and specialist drinks coolers are also available. If you have a fitted kitchen, you might choose to integrate your appliances with doors to match the rest of your kitchen. Once you’ve decided what type of appliance you want, you need to consider which features and specifications you’d like it to possess: 34

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

Getting more specific, you could choose to seek out fridges with antibacterial coatings to give further protection to your food, and only consider those with glass rather than wire shelves, as the former avoid the potential danger of drips from food on a higher shelf contaminating food below. Some fridges now have a built in fan that circulates the cold air, and ensures a more even temperature is obtained throughout the appliance. American style fridge freezers have become increasingly popular. These offer massive storage space, and filtered cool water and ice dispensers, but they also take up a lot of room. They can be expensive to buy and to run, especially as the water filters have to be replaced regularly. Whichever fridge you buy, remember to keep it upright at all times during installation, and allow at least 6 hours for the gases inside to settle before switching it on.

Restaurant Review

White Horse, Biddestone W

ITH a setting that any landlord would give their right arm for, situated right next to the infamous Biddestone Duck Pond, lies The White Horse. If there is a more relaxing place to have dinner or a drink anywhere in North Wiltshire then I’ve yet to find it, this pub really does have the wow factor when it comes to location, but does the quality of the food and drink the pub offers match the excellence of the location – read on to find out. I ventured along to the pub with my wife and three children on a balmy Summer Tuesday evening for Dinner, the pub was quiet but we did arrive just before 6pm. Sat at the tables out front were a dozen or so people enjoying a drink, as the evening wore on more diners did arrive. We were welcomed by the friendly bar staff, we chose to sit just around the corner from the bar which was nice and private. A waitress service was provided for drinks and while they were being poured we took a look at the menu. It’s not an extensive menu but we all found something we liked for a starter and main, even the choosiest of eaters should be able to find something they will enjoy. It wasn’t too long before the starters arrived and everything was as you would expect, the food was

presented professionally and the temperature of the food was excellent. My Spicy Vegetable Soup was tasty, served with crusty bread and butter, my wife had the King Prawns in batter with Sweet Chilli Dip and Salad, the dip was served in a bowl on the side and the salad tasted fresh, a good first impression.

With the starters cleared in timely fashion there was a sensible delay between courses before the mains arived, nor they did come straight out, timing of course serving is an art and the team at The White Horse got it just about spot on. Regular updates from the bar staff and offers to top up our drinks only added to the high level of service we received. Our main courses arrived and we all tucked in, I ordered the Spanish Omelette which was served with a side salad which was tasty and there was plenty of it, you won’t go hungry dining here. My three children are by no means fussy eaters but they know what they like and having all ordered steaks I was interested to see the quality and look of the meat, I wasn’t surprised to see if was of good quality, all locally sourced and cooked to order, I think the price point was spot on at around £15 for the two courses. Now at this point I was full to the brim but I’d heard so many good things about the ice cream I felt obliged to try it and I’m glad I did. I went for the Malibu and Coconut Ice cream which comes out served on a waffle, to be honest I could have left the waffle as I’d over-indulged earlier, I persevered though and it was lovely, just enough Malibu to give the ice cream a lovely taste, not enough to hinder your driving so don’t worry. Being full the wife declined dessert but the children all had one, normal children’s choices Chocolate Brownie, Vanilla Ice Cream and Crumble – it all went, need I say more! So what was my overall verdict? It was a very pleasant evening out with the family which was enhanced by the standard of both the food and the service we received, all topped off with 10 minutes by the duck pond feeding the very demanding ducks. You can buy duck food in the pub for 50p a tub, which really finished off the evening – happy children, full tummies and fully relaxed parents, always a strong indicator of a very enjoyable experience.

If you’re looking for a relaxing evening with a sublime location try the White Horse at Biddestone, you won’t be disappointed. 36

White Horse, Biddestone

T

HE White Horse is a lovely country pub in the heart of the beautiful Wiltshire village of Biddestone. Known traditionally as “the pub by the duckpond,” The White Horse is one of the most picturesque public houses for miles around. Whether you’re here for a lunchtime special or an evening drink with friends, visiting us is always a great experience. Just drop by to relax and try our superb home cooked food and excellent homely atmosphere: they all help to make the White Horse different. The bar serves a number of real ales, extensive wine list, lagers, ciders and plenty of soft drinks on offer for children and nondrinkers.

The interior of the pub has been recently refurbished and decorated, bringing a more family feel to the pub. There are a number of tables for dining at and in the “snug” there is a private dining area with its own bar hatch which is ideal for family get togethers (about 12 people). At the front of the pub is seating for over 20 people The large family garden at the rear boasts more outside tables and plenty of space for the kids to run around. We are also a dog friendly pub with dogs allowed at the front of the pub and also the bar, as long as they are on a lead and under control.

Sarah, Mark and all the team at White Horse look forward to seeing you!

We open from 12:00-11:00 every day apart from Sunday which is 12:00-10:30 Food is available every day from 12:00-2:00 & 6:00-9:00. Sunday is 12:00-3:00 only (no dinner service).

Health & Beauty

The flowers are divided into seven groups:

Bach Flower Remedies B

ORN in 1886, Edward Bach was an English doctor, bacteriologist and pathologist, who was conducting research into vaccines when he became interested in a more holistic approach to medicine. Dissatisfied with the tendency to treat the disease rather than the whole person, he began collecting plants and in particular flowers - the most highly developed part of a plant - to find remedies.

He believed that illness was the result of internal conflict, and that negative moods such as unhappiness, fear or worry, caused a lack of harmony which ultimately manifested themselves in physical disease. By correcting this emotional imbalance, illness could be treated or avoided. “Health depends on being in harmony with our souls,” he asserted. Bach abandoned scientific methods of research and turned instead to his intuition to guide him to the right plants. Whilst experiencing a negative emotion he would hold his hand over different 42

plants, and if one alleviated the problem he would ascribe to it the power to heal. In this way he identified 38 flower remedies that can be used alone, or in conjunction with others to treat emotional and spiritual conditions.

The remedies are usually taken orally by mixing with water, although they are also available as droppers, sprays, liquid melts and pastilles. Only a few drops are required which should be taken several times a day. In some cases results can be instant, whilst in others it could take several days for any benefits to be realised.

Face Your Fears gives courage, reassurance and peace of mind to the fearful. Know Your Own Mind helps with feelings, and can increase decisiveness and a sense of direction. Find Joy and Hope overcomes feelings of despondency, despair and selfdoubt. Reach Out to Others helps people who feel lonely or alone to connect with others. Stand Your Ground helps those who put on a brave face become more assertive and constant. Live and Let Live aids tolerance and the ability to unwind in those who are overbearing and possessive. Live the Day gives enthusiasm and tranquillity to those who dwell too much on the past instead of enjoying the present. In addition, Bach developed the Rescue Remedy, which is a ready-made combination of 5 flower essences that can provide comfort and reassurance for daily stressful situations.

There is little scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of Bach’s Flower remedies, and some claim that any benefits experienced are due to the Placebo effect. That said, they have now been in existence for over 80 years, and there are plenty of testimonials available on the internet giving credence to their effectiveness and healing properties.

Pre-school Pains!

I

S it just my children who seem to grow into giants over the month of August?

Whether it’s the glorious summer weather or the fact that they can just run around and enjoy bags of freedom to loosen their limbs into a growth spurt, most children appear to have visibly grown by the time they are ready to go back to school. This is what makes the last week of the school summer holidays a bit of a trial in our house. All through our children’s school lives we have never seemed to be able to get our timing right so a few days before the end of the holidays you will find me trawling through shops and the internet looking for essential school uniform. I like to think it’s because, as parents, we want to make the most of the school holidays and are too busy to think about boring mundane chores like shopping, but in reality it’s probably just because we aren’t terribly organised. At least I can say that my children have always been up to date with their childhood immunisations, but alas I can take no super 44

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

Mummy brownie points for this. Thank heavens the NHS is on top of things as the Dept. of Child Health have dutifully sent me lovely letters reminding me when vaccinations are due during various stages of my children’s lives. The National immunisation schedule is reissued periodically and has had a few small changes since my children were toddlers. For example children aged two, three and four years old on the 1st September 2014 will now be vaccinated against Flu via a nasal spray. A copy of the complete up to date immunisation schedule for children and adults is available on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.net and you can even print out an immunisation wall chart to keep organised if you wish. At two, three and four months old children are frequent visitors to their GP Surgery, having three visits to se the nurse to be vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b). This is a five in one vaccination which is given with a pneumococcal (month two and four) or meningitis vaccination

Health Matters (at three months) and the rotavirus vaccination. Rotavirus is given by mouth in the form of Rotarix and the others are delivered by two injections at each visit. After their first birthday they are invited back again to receive another vaccination against Hib, MenC and pneumococcal disease which is a four in one vaccination and also the MMR for measles, mumps and rubella. The flu vaccination is now given at two, three and four months old. At around four months after their third birthdays children are vaccinated with a second dose of MMR and a pre-school booster for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio as a single four in one injection. This vaccination gets your child and their immune system ready for school and the interaction and exposure they will have with lots more children than they have been used to as toddlers. Apart from the flu vaccination at four years old, the rest of your child’s routine immunisation schedule should then be delivered at school by the school nurse. These tend to start at the age of twelve when girls are given their first dose of the HPV vaccination to help protect them against cervical cancer. At around fourteen years old the school will ensure your child is given a booster injection with a three in one tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccine. They will also be injected with a meningitis C vaccination. This helps to build our teenagers immune systems ready for college or university and the next stage in their lives. If for any reason it is not possible to have any of these immunisations carried out by the school, they can be carried out by a Practice Nurse at your Drs Surgery. As parents we don’t generally like seeing our babies being given injections, I admit that I cried when both my children were vaccinated and recall that on one occasion the nurse gave me a sticker that said I had been brave – it helped more than I can put into words. Despite the tears, these vaccinations are crucial to ensuring that our children are protected from a range of serious and potentially fatal diseases through every stage in their precious lives. The vaccination schedule picks up again at age 65 when we call patients back in to clinic for pneumococcal and flu injections and for your 70th birthday you get a shingles vaccination! Now haven’t our children got a lot to look forward to?!

P

ARENTING is a funny business. Everyone has an opinion on how to do things, from potty training to bedtimes - and that is only friends and family. Imagine how many different views on these everyday aspects of a child’s life exist across the world . . . Mei-Ling Hopgood’s fascinating book How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm explores a range of ideas from across the globe, looking at how ‘normal’ practice in one culture may seem unusual, if not downright odd, in another. Hopgood writes from the parent’s perspective, and the book is part social history and part memoir as she tries to apply different strategies with her own daughter. Whilst some of the issues here are familiar to many, from newspaper headlines and popular studies, others are genuinely new and absorbing to the reader. We all know that the French have a reputation for appreciating good food, and Hopgood’s exploration of mealtimes at a French nursery school serve to explain how children come to see food as more than just fuel. However, the ways in which Japanese children are encouraged to work conflicts out for themselves, even if that means coming to blows, and the reality of how and why Kenyan parents manage without pushchairs, are small revelations which lead us to wonder about how we perceive growing up. Hopgood’s style is a mixture of anecdote, example and research, meaning that the book is always readable and is educational in the best of ways - you find out an awful lot, and you don’t always realise how much you are learning. Not a bad way of thinking about teaching children, either...

Silly Billy Learns His Lesson A new children’s story from Jo Deacon

T

HIS story I’m about to tell, concerns the little wishing well, Which stands upon the village green. A prettier one you’ve never seen. Admired by all – the little well knew many secrets, but won’t tell. Once every year, the village fete – which started early – finished late, Would “dress” the trees with strings of light, to make the tents glow in the night. Cakes, and ginger beer and candy, sold to John, and Sue and Mandy. Donkey rides, and bouncy castles, dodgems, big wheel, slides, and hastles – From the mums who’se aching feet cried out for cups of tea, - a seat. Small children pestering their mums, for pennies for the “rides”, such fun. The courting couples strolling by, arms linked and dreamy, loving eyes, Slow, made their way across the green – to where the wishing well was seen, To throw a coin into the water, like mothers, sisters, sons and daughter. Closing eyes and crossing fingers, making wishes as they lingered. Laughing at their foolishness, half believing nonetheless. Then when night fell and “closed” the day, the fair packed up and went away. The village green once more stood bare – save for the little well stood there. One year, at dark, a bad boy came. He crept across the grass, his name – Was Billy, naughty Billy Blue. Oh dear, what mischief would he do? All round the green, no lights were on. The church clock chimed, its bell struck one. Bill should have been in bed asleep, not on the green with stealthy creep – Up to the well. He peered inside, then with a grin from side to side, He grabbed the bucket, hung on tight, and dissappeared, down, out of sight! He didn’t think the well was deep, but he was wrong – the sides were steep. He’d gone to steal the coins, but oh! They’re underwater, far below. Then, as he landed in the mud, he wished and wished that he’d been good, For cold and wet, poor Bill was stuck! This time, he had run out of luck! And as the stars danced in the sky, young Billy Blue began to cry. For he could not climb up again, and there, he knew he must remain. Hungry, cold, alone and sad, he wished that he’d been good, not bad, And with the mud around his feet, he stood all night, no place to sleep.

Sharing stories with your child

Improves basic speech skills While you’re reading The Gruffalo for the gazillionth time, your child is reinforcing the basic sounds that form language.

by Sarah Davey Strengthens your relationship Reading together lets you slow down and creates some quiet time in a busy day. Enjoying a book together brings you closer.

Teaches kids that reading is fun! Reading with children helps them see books as an indulgence, not a chore. Children exposed to reading are more likely to choose books over video games, television, and other forms of entertainment as they grow older.

Boosts academic achievements Many scientific studies have shown that children exposed to reading early in life are more likely to do well in all areas of education.

Helps with learning to read Children aren’t born knowing that text is read from left to right, or that the words on a page are separate from the images. Essential

pre-reading skills like these are among the major benefits of reading with your child. Improves mastery of language Toddlers who shared books with their parents and siblings, develop a better grasp of the fundamentals of language as they approach school age. Enhances concentration and discipline Toddlers may initially squirm and become distracted during story time, but gradually they learn to listen. They develop self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention, which are all valuable skills in school.

When morning came, he heard a sound, the milkman on his early round. He shouted til his voice was hoarse – but no one heard his yells, of course! Then later Billy had some luck – for off to change her library book, Miss Parr, who with her friend Miss Dean, lived in a cottage by the green, Came strolling by the little well, and Billy heard her, gave a yell! He frightened poor Miss Parr, who fled back to her cottage. Then she led – A startled Miss Dean to the well, to hear what she had heard, and tell – Her that she wasn’t going mad. For her friend’s presence she was glad, For when Bill heard and yelled again, Miss Dean heard too, and she exclaimed, “I know that voice. It’s Billy Blue. Now what’s that bad lad been up to?” Miss Dean peered down into the well, “He’s here ,” she cried. “Who shall we tell?” By that time, people noticing the two old ladies, peering in – The wishing well, had come to see whatever could the matter be! So Miss Parr and her chum, Miss Dean told everyone what they had seen – That Billy Blue was down the well – the reason why they need not tell. The blacksmith came and brought his son, who brought a rope, now everyone – Excitedly stood round, to see what would the outcome of this be. They hauled Bill up, tired, cold and sad, Miss Dean told him that he’d been bad. Then PC Bob arrived and said, “Young man, you should be put to bed”. “Before you catch your death of cold. You don’t look now so sly and bold!” “You tried to steal the coins, I know! I’ll see you later, off you go!” And when young Bill, shamefaced and sad, had limped off home, “I’ll bet that lad – Has learned his lesson.” Miss Parr said. PC Bob grinned, nodded his head. Poor Billy went down with a chill, and for a week felt really ill. He had bad dreams about that night, and how he’d felt so full of fright. He vowed from then on, he’d be good. PC Bob said he really should. When Miss Parr and her friend Miss Dean, were strolling on the village green, How pleasantly suprised one day, they were when Billy came to say, How grateful he was that they’d found and rescued him from underground, And said his lesson he had learned – that “he who plays with fire gets burned.” His words Miss Dean smiled wide to hear, and said, “I’m pleased you said that dear.” And Miss Parr said, “That boy’s quite nice.” Then bought the lad a strawberry ice. Miss Dean with her best friend, Miss Parr, take little outings in their car. And still upon the village green, the wishing well stands, quite serene.

Children’s Books

The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon Jonny Duddle

Short enough for a rainy afternoon read, or long enough to keep younger readers guessing through a week of bedtimes, this is a fabulous little book.

J

Duddle’s illustrations are carefully spaced, so that there are no daunting pages of solid text: there is always at least one line drawing to pull us in. However, the text also does this brilliantly. Picking up the story from where it was left at the end of ‘The Pirates Next Door’, it begins with strange happenings in Dull-On-Sea.

Firstly there are some very odd night-time visitors. Then the museum is robbed - and whilst the account of events offered by hapless security guard Arthur Poppycock is garbled, it makes one thing clear: there are pirates involved! Matilda thinks it must be time to contact her best friend Jim-Lad, and he and his family soon set sail for Dull-On-Sea to try to discover exactly what is going on... 52

Valley of the Dinosaurs Mary Pope Osborne

...........................................................

T

ime travel. A quest to solve. Exciting adventures. This book for young readers who are growing in confidence has all of these and much more. The first of a series of books, it follows the adventures of Jack and Annie as they discover a magic treehouse in their neighbourhood.

........................................................... onny Duddle’s picture books have quickly become modern children’s classics, and this chapter book follows on from ‘The Pirates Next Door’, using familiar characters but offering a longer and more detailed read for that awkward age when picture books are dismissed as ‘babyish’ but longer books are still a little too challenging.

Magic Tree House:

The Invisible Man’s Socks Alex Shearer

...........................................................

T

hey should have known better....but it had been an educational school trip, and they had some free time, and there was really nothing else to do... So, Mr Ellis’s class (and Mr Ellis, and Miss Bingham, and Mrs Ormerod) find themselves in The Museum of Little Horrors, where, despite the warnings issued by the owner, they can’t resist touching the exhibits. You would too, if you were faced with the Bigfoot’s Big Foot. Or the Cyclops’ Cycle Clips. And especially the Tuft of the Werewolf ’s Hair. However, when Michael Pensley realises that he can actually feel the Invisible Man’s Socks, it stops being so funny. And when the class return to school, and then go home, they begin to realise that perhaps those warnings were there for a reason. Alex Shearer treads the line carefully between the ghoulish and the absurd in this novel for 8 years and over, and there are plenty of laughs to keep the pages turning as the horrible consequences develop, just realistically enough to make you wonder...and perhaps to stop you touching when the signs tell you not to. Reviews by Kath Bennet

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014

As the story begins Jack and Annie are chasing an imaginary monster into a nearby wood when they stumble across a solitary treehouse. Curiosity getting the better of them, they decide to explore and inside they find wonderful collection of books. Jack is drawn to a dinosaur book and before they know it the two children are transported back to the time of the dinosaurs. Full of fascinating facts this book will appeal to any budding palaeontologist. At ten chapters this is a nice introduction to reading without seeming too daunting. The sentence structure can be repetitive and simplistic, but I am assured by young readers that this is not a problem!

There are currently 16 books in the series covering different time periods and geographic locations, and along with an interactive website, promise to engage and educate young readers.

Bush-hog Tails Victoria Harwood

B

ush-hog Tails is a story about a lovable new kind of creature. From the first sighting of the little Bush-hog he can often be mistaken as a hedgehog, but this cute thing is in fact nothing like a hedgehog! He is smaller, extremely clever, can speak many languages and has metal spikes which only really come out if the Bush-hog is afraid. Bushy meets a cat called Fluffy who attempts to eat him but soon comes to realise that it won’t be that easy! So instead they become good friends and embark on many adventures together, meeting other animals and making new friends. The author, Victoria Harwood, hopes that the characters touch the hearts of both children and adults. Her stories have magic, animal education and humour included in the hope that they will delight and inspire children, keeping them enchanted by the mishaps of the characters. Victoria has drawn all the illustrations using charcoal and crayon, carefully scanning them to avoid smudging ready for publication. Victoria will be soon launching her second book which has the little Bush-hog discovering new and exciting things. Victoria hopes that this will become a series of books so that her love for animals and writing can continue to be shared with others for many years to come.

Could you help a puppy become a guide dog? G

UIDE DOGS is appealing for volunteers in Swindon and surrounding area to train and socialise guide dog puppies, a volunteering role known as Puppy Walking. These crucial volunteers provide the full-time care and education of a puppy from seven weeks of age until they are between 12 and 14 months old when the puppies are then returned to the charity to begin their formal guide dog training. Hazel Dyson, Volunteer Development Coordinator for Guide Dogs, explains: “We’re looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers – our puppy walkers play an essential role - if we don’t have puppy walkers, we don’t have guide dogs.

Meet Peter, one of our existing Puppy Walkers: “When we started with the dogs we got to know everyone. People are so used to seeing me walking a dog that if I go out without one they ask where they are! Puppy Walking takes time, energy, patience and an awareness of the job that your puppy will be doing when he is mature. You have to be always aware that any bad habits allowed to develop may stop your puppy from qualifying, so extra time and effort has to be made in the training. Apart from the obedience training the puppy has to be exposed to all the everyday things that he may encounter with his new owner, including going shopping, to the dentist, the doctor, travelling on buses and trains, traffic, joggers, cyclists, stairs, other dogs, cats, the list is extensive! We love it, it keeps us occupied and fit and when we don’t have one we miss them. It’s like an addiction. When one goes you feel sad, but when the next one comes in they bring all their love with them. “It’s like an addiction. When one goes you feel sad, but when the next one comes in they bring all their love with them.”

“The role is challenging and it’s a real commitment to take a puppy in to your home for a year, but with the support of Guide Dogs staff, our volunteers find it extremely rewarding and worthwhile to raise a dog who will one day give a blind or partially-sighted person a new independence by acting as their eyes.” To become a Puppy Walker, volunteers will need to be home the majority of the day or be able to take the puppy to a suitable work environment. Puppy Walkers take their puppy into many varied environments, need access to a car and a securely fenced yard or garden. Guide Dogs supplies basic equipment and cover all veterinary and feeding expenses. Penny Parker, who has been a Puppy Walker for 7 years, says: “Volunteering for Guide Dogs has been a life changing experience. I’ve gained confidence and made many friends. I feel great that someone’s life has changed by looking after a puppy.” If you would like to become a Puppy Walker or request more information please call 0845 371 7771, email volunteer@guidedogs.org.uk or visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/puppywalking 54

Cotswold Wildlife Park

First birthday of Rhino baby C

otswold Wildlife Park is celebrating a very special birthday. Exactly one year ago, Astrid was born. She was the first Southern White Rhino calf to have been born in the Park’s forty-four year history. She has since become one of the wildlife park’s most popular residents.

To celebrate the day, keepers made a birthday cake for Astrid. Visitors have even sent in birthday cards to mark the occasion. Astrid is a dream come true for the Park. Her mother Nancy (along with another female called Ruby) made the eleven thousand kilometre journey from Mafunyane Game Farm in South Africa to the UK in 2009 to join young male Monty at the Park in the hope that one day, they would successfully breed. Four years later, on 1st July 2013, Astrid was born. At birth, Astrid weighed approximately 40kgs and was totally reliant on her mother Nancy for survival.

Cotswold Wildlife Park is committed to Rhino conservation and works closely with Tusk Trust to promote vital conservation work. To find out more about these projects, please visit www.cotswoldwildlifepark. co.uk/conservation and www.tusk.org. Astrid’s mother Nancy was named after Prime Minister and local MP David Cameron’s daughter. Mr Cameron opened the Park’s new railway extension in 2007 and still visits the wildlife park with his family. These iconic animals were one of the first large mammals in the collection since founder

of Cotswold Wildlife Park, Mr John Heyworth, opened the Park to the public in 1970. A female Rhino will give birth to a single calf once approximately every two or three years. Their bond is a strong one and the calf will remain with its mother for at least two years, benefiting from her protection. Once the rarest subspecies of any Rhino, the Southern White Rhino was almost wiped out by hunters and farmers in the early 1900s, when approximately twenty to fifty animals remained. They were on the brink of extinction. Thanks to excellent and sustained protection, they are now the most common of all the Rhino subspecies. Sadly, the same cannot be said for one of its two subspecies. The Northern White Rhino is listed as Critically Endangered and is on the brink of extinction. The West African Black Rhino is feared extinct. Poaching for Rhino horn is the main cause of their demise.

Cotswold Wildlife Park opens its doors at 10am every day (except Christmas Day), with last admission at 3.30pm (4.30pm in the summer months). Visit www.cotswoldwildlifepark.com for further details. Photos: Cotswold Wildlife Park

Section Head of Mammals, Mark Godwin, added: “She is the biggest thing to happen in my career so far and a true star with a character to match. I look forward to the day she goes on to be part of the breeding programme and the day when a Rhino birth is a regular event at the Park.” Visitors can see Astrid daily from 10am to 6pm (last entry to the Park is at 4.30pm) in the large paddock she shares with mother Nancy, father Monty and Ruby.

Local History The town of Chippenham and its surrounding villages feature largely in a novel

The Murder of Crows by local author

William Hulbert.

The former Monkton Park Primary School deputy head has penned a part scifi part historical fiction novel based on Kellaways villager John Woodman’s boast in the Lyon Inn that he was going to London to:

“Light enough bonfires to make London as sad a London as ever it was since the world began.”

n the 1960s in The Yelde Hall in Chippenham (then the Town’s museum) local author William Hulbert first heard the allegation, in an old style photo booth, that John Woodman had plotted the Fire of London. Over 40 years and much research later he has published his book The Murder of Crows.

Yelde Hall (interior)

Several local Chippenham landmarks appear in The Murder of Crows. The Lyon Inn where John Woodman is alleged to have plotted the Fire still exists, but is today The Magpie Shop and the complex is intriguingly called the London Buildings. Other local landmarks that appear in the book are The Yelde Hall and its accompanying Blindroom. The Yelde Hall is over 500 hundred years old and in its time has been a court house and main civic meeting place. Upstairs was a Council Chamber where the Bailiff and Burgesses held town council meetings – a council meeting scene with mannequins can now be viewed in this area. The Yelde Hall has also been used as a bank, armoury, Fire Station, Tourist Information and the Town Museum.

Yelde Hall

Two characters from the book are imprisoned in the Blindroom (the town’s lock up). It’s still possible to go into the Blindroom and imagine the helplessness felt by its inmates. Other local landmarks that feature in the book are The Bear Inn and the now demolished Bull Inn; that site now houses WH Smith – the impressive Smith’s doorway being the original passage way for coaches into the Inn. The characters pass through Yatton Keynell where they rest on the wall of St Margaret’s church as well as spying a rather ominous 97 miles to Hyde Park Corner sign.

Bell Inn Yatton Keynell

The characters eventually set off from Chippenham and head towards London, but along the way their journey is fraught with a variety of trials and tribulations. After the Fire of London the authorities issued a warrant for Woodman’s arrest, but he had disappeared; allegedly fleeing the country. Hulbert has come up with an interesting twist as to Woodman’s fate. continued overleaf

Local History

The Murder of Crows contains much researched fact as well as fiction. Readers can follow the route taken by the leading characters in two ways: either by using five maps that are contained in the book, or through Wil’s website mpnw.50webs.com which in addition to containing the maps also has a series of photographs, many of which are in Wiltshire and the Chippenham area. It is therefore possible to metaphorically as well as literally follow the characters’ journey from West Yatton Down, to Chippenham, Silbury Hill, Avebury, Berkshire and on into London. West Yatton, near Castle Combe is now a nature reserve managed by Wiltshire Trust and accessible to the public. The area is less than forty acres in size and is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). It can be reached from the A420 four miles south of Chippenham (heading towards Bath). You need to turn onto a minor road opposite ‘The Crown Inn’ signposted to West Yatton. Continue along this narrow track for about a mile until you come to a black and white signpost for Long Dean, just after this signpost there is parking space for four to five cars on an embankment on the left hand side of the road. West Yatton Down is on the opposite side of the road and is accessed through a gate. The area consists of a valley with very steep sided slopes. Through the middle runs a sparkling stream, but in Summer this tributary of the By Brook, often dries up. The Down has an abundance of flower and fauna including several species of orchids, deer, rabbits, weasels and a variety of butterflies. The former Lyon Inn now Magpie

Although aimed at the adult market the Kindle version rose to number 1 in Amazon’s bestsellers young adults and teenagers sci-fi alien section within four days of its release, and has also featured highly in the historical fiction section. Car Cleaning C

LEANING and waxing your car can seem like a chore. But, it is a worthwhile investment. If you don’t want to do it yourself, take it to your local valet or find one that can come to you. Cleaning and protecting your car’s bodywork can bolster its resale value. Acid rain, bird droppings, road salt and the sun can damage your car. So ensure unwelcome deposits are regularly washed off and wax your car to provide a protective coating. A clean car is also safer. Washing mirrors, windscreens and lights regularly, means you will see more of the road and others will be able to see you better. A cleaner car is also less wind resistance so that helps fuel economy. In addition to regular cleaning and waxing, there are times when special attention is required, such as when you spill milk in your car or a child or pet vomits in your vehicle. Your local valet will have their own tried and trusted methods, but here’s a few tips in case you need to take immediate action. First, wipe up any excess liquid or debris. Second, take out floor mats and seat covers and wash these separately. Let the area dry completely and then apply some baking soda. Put cold water over the soda and allow to sit overnight. Then vacuum the next day. Or you can apply vinegar to the area and again let it sit overnight before vacuuming, or use a special carpet or pet cleaning product. These methods help break up the enzymes in the spillage and reduce odours.

Dash Cams

OU’RE behind the wheel of your family saloon, quietly minding your own business, when a souped up sports car suddenly flies past and cuts you up just as you reach the motorway exit. Seconds later it’s gone, with nothing to show but a trail of smoke. Not so long ago there was no getting back at reckless drivers like this, but in-car cameras now offer the chance to hold them to account.

An absolute given in countries like Russia, Japan and the USA, only 3% of British drivers currently own a dash cam, but the trend is on the increase. A recent RAC survey found that 4 out of 10 car owners would consider buying one, and that a fifth of current dash cams are used to guard against ‘cash for crash’ scams. False insurance claims are growing, and one common way of faking it is to set up a collision and claim the crash was the fault of the innocent party. If you’re the victim in 64

a case like this, capturing the event on camera could help prove your innocence and bring the bad guys to justice. Good footage from a dashboard camera is admissible evidence in court, so if you are involved in a genuine accident it can offer proof of what really took place. You can also use it to protect your vehicle whilst parked. The camera will come to life when damage is detected. Dashboard cameras, which are usually mounted on the windscreen, record onto memory cards whilst the ignition is on. Recording is constant, which means that once the card is full, old files are overwritten. Recording time depends on the size of memory card and the bit rate of the camera, but can run into several hours. Installation is by suction or adhesive pads. Cameras are most often wired into the cigarette lighter, but can also be hard-wired directly into the

car battery - the only way if you want a model with parking mode. When choosing an in-car camera, first consider the size. Smaller models are more discreet, and black is the best low-profile colour. Next, look for one with a decent video resolution. The current standard is 1080p, which will pick out number plates and other details - essential if required as evidence. Check what the night video quality is like, and decide if you want a model that can save footage you might want to keep. Other useful options include date and time stamps, and dual or multiple channels which record what’s behind as well as what’s in front of you. Finally, don’t forget that dash cams can be fun! A great way to capture details of memorable trips, and film the more unusual sights we come across from time to time!

Blooms from bulbs

I

T may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in

When buying and planting bulbs, try and follow these general rules:

price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a mass of white globular flowers borne on short stems.

• Wear gloves when handling, as some are toxic and can cause skin irritations • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Give each a gentle squeeze and check they are firm. Reject any which are not, or appear to have shrivelled, and those showing any sign of mould (normally grey/ blue in colour). • Reject any showing excess signs of growth, with either long or pale stems. Bulbs should not be showing any sign of growth, but a short tip is OK • Damaged or split bulbs should not be selected • Plant using a bulb planter, allowing a hole twice the diameter of the bulb and about 3 times the depth, but I would advise to research it as each variety is different. • Place a little bone meal in the hole for good root development

Why instant websites don’t work In these harsh economic times it can be very tempting to go for a ‘do-it-yourself’ website package. Many companies are offering them, promising quick setup times, easy access and cheap costs. But are they really worth it? While there are some very appealing benefits to these packages it’s worth noting a few drawbacks that might not be instantly visible:

n You don’t get a unique design

This is bad because your website will end up looking exactly the same as tens, maybe hundreds of others. You may very well be able to switch images and colours, but with the internet first impressions count for a lot, and it may take just a second for a visitor to mistake you for a different company – and if they’ve had a bad experience with that company chances are they won’t stick around for long.

n Use of stock images

n Poorly constructed code

In a similar way to the designs you’ll be sharing the same basic code (HTML) as all the other sites on the service. In order

to provide thousands of instant websites the source code will have to be duplicated, which means there’s no way to tailor it for your business. This can result in poor compatibility on certain browsers or devices (like mobile phones) or a loss of search traffic. Chances are you will be provided with ‘industry specific’ stock photography. This can be a good thing, particularly if you don’t have many of your own images. But stock photography should be used sparingly as it can lead to false impressions and leave users feeling that the website feels “fake”. It’s always better to use ‘company specific’ images.

n Too many options

One of the great things about instant website services is that they will probably have a long list of optional features that you can include on your site at the click of a button. The danger is that it’s possible to include all of them. When putting together a website (instant or not) it’s always good to take a step back and think about it from your customers point of view. What do they actually need? It’s probably not everything that’s been made available.

Web design has a reputation for being quite expensive, and instant packages can seem an attractive alternative. But consider this: would you buy a ‘do-it-yourself-heart-surgery kit’? If all you’re looking for is a sticking plaster, to last you a short while these packages may well be the right choice. But if you are looking for a website that is there to aid your business in securing customers and sales there are alternatives that will benefit you in the long run. If a website is worth creating it’s worth creating well.

Ferfoot hosts vintage tea party

R

ESIDENTS of a Chippenham care home threw open their doors to local residents by hosting a Victorian tea party in support of National Care Home Open Day (NCHOD). The specialist dementia home, which has more than 50 residents, is part of the national Caring Homes group. Situated in Old Hardenhuish Lane, Chippenham, staff and residents used the national event as an opportunity to get to know the local community and vice versa. Nicki Stone, manager of Ferfoot, was thrilled with the number of local residents who came for tea. She said: “This was a very important event for us. It offered a great opportunity to challenge the preconceptions many people have about life in a care. We work hard to ensure our residents play an active role in the local community, so this was a great opportunity to invite people in and show off our wonderful care home.’ Staff at the home entered into the spirit of National Care Home Open Day by sourcing vintage china from local charity shops and by baking an array of cupcakes for their guests. Many neighbours came along from local streets, the local church and further afield in Chippenham. Situated in the attractive market town of Chippenham, Ferfoot provides the highest level of residential dementia care for up to 52 elderly people. The home is run by the family-owned Caring Homes Group, which was founded in 1994 by mother and son team, Helena and Paul Jeffery. Resident June Gough entertaining a guest at the Victorian tea party.

A

business woman from Kington Langley has launched a new company that will focus entirely on bringing a unique marine based 100% natural product to the market. The company, called Quinton Healthy, is the brainchild of Gillian Livock who has a pharmaceutical background. Since securing the distribution rights she has quickly gained interest and listings for the product range with major health and well being retailers in England. Livock discovered the benefits of the product Quinton Isotonic while travelling in Europe, where it is commonly used on a daily basis as a supplement that improves nutritional balance and well being. It is also been widely recognised by professional athletes and sports people who are looking for an effective way to replace vital nutrients post exercise. She said ‘Using Quinton Isotonic on a daily basis, will bring your body back to its optimum health by naturally adding, replacing and maintaining the minerals and elements you need to feel great, keep fit and fight disease. Quinton can increase energy and stamina, speed recovery, support immune function, balance hormones and improve mental focus.’ Quinton Isotonic contains a specially cold-filtered marine plasma of phyto-plankton blooms which is collected from deep in the vortex of the ocean which mirrors the minerals and trace elements we need to be and stay healthy. It also promotes better skin health that helps the body overcome skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne, Seborrheic dermatitis etc which are all pathologies that result from a lack of skin minerals that help maintain skin hydration and flexibility. Livock continued “The way food is farmed and produced today means that we will not naturally consume enough food to get to our body’s optimum mineral and trace element levels. The tiny levels of trace elements in your body provide major functions including regulating hormones and enabling immunity mechanisms to kick in and fight disease. NACS Feature

Chimney Safety

UK fire statistics show that each year on average over 30,000 houses have chimney fires. This will be largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough or burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance and causing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep and a valid certificate of sweeping issued that is recognised by insurance companies. If the fire brigade is called out to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been properly maintained, then the local council can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive! Chimney fires can not only destroy homes but also endanger the occupiers of the dwelling. Slow-burning chimney fires don’t get enough air or have enough fuel to be as dramatic or visible as their more spectacular cousins. The temperatures they reach are very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure and nearby combustible parts of the house. Use only recommended fuels for your appliance and flue type (if you are unsure check your manufactures instructions, ask your stove supplier, or a NACS Chimney Sweep). Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also help to increase the efficiency of appliances. The frequency of Chimney Sweeping will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your local NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment. The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only:

Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep. Always ensure you receive a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping. Your Chimney Sweep will also provide advice on your Chimney, heating appliances, what fuels to use, and the best practice for fuel storage. Chimney Sweeps that are Members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) undertake an extensive training programme and have to successfully complete a full assessment prior to becoming and trading as a NACS Member. All NACS Members must hold valid insurance for Chimney Sweeping, of which they provide a copy of to the Association on an annual basis. They must also have the correct equipment to be able to undertake the job which is checked at the time of their assessment. You can search for a NACS Chimney Sweep in your area by visiting the NACS website www.nacs.org.uk. NACS Chimney Sweeps are: • All trained and qualified • Fully insured • Issue an Industry Standard Certificate of Chimney Sweeping for every Chimney cleaned • Follow the Industry Standard Code of Practice • Able to inspect and survey Chimneys using CCTV equipment NACS Members are dedicated to Protecting the Consumer

• Bituminous Coal: Quarterly when in use

For more consumer information and guidance on Chimneys and Stoves, please www.nacs.org.uk where you can also download a free Heat Your Home Safely Guide.

• Gas: Once per year

Article provided by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps

• Smokeless Fuel: At least once a year • Wood: Quarterly when in use • Oil: Once per year

82

NACS Chimney Sweeps are very mindful and conscious of making as little mess as possible, and are in fact trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping. Normally Chimney Sweeps will need a clear passage to the chimney and adequate space to work in. They may suggest you clear any ornaments from the hearth and mantelpiece, and perhaps you could clear the grate of any fuel, ash or rubbish etc before the sweep arrives.
