An Isle of Mull Bath Hamper

Autumn is here with a chill in the air and the leaves all falling from the trees, this can only mean one thing, Christmas is on its way! Every year I tell myself I’ll get ahead with the Christmas preparations and every year I leave it till the last minute!! A good place to start the festive season this year is the late night shopping events in Calne or Chippenham as there is so much to see and do for all the family. See this month’s magazine for details. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this issue, especially Atwell-Wilson Museum, Greatwood, Wiltshire Air Ambulance, Una Cavanagh and the many more who have sent in their What’s On items. There are many local events at this time of year raising money for good causes - please support them if you can.

Active Wiltshire Active Wiltshire is your first port of call if you’re looking for a sports club to join, an event to take part in or a sports facility around the county. We also have a food diary and BMI calculator on the site and lots of information on the benefit of healthy, active lifestyles. The national guidelines on physical activity for adults is to achieve 5 bouts of 30 minutes moderate intensity activity per week – why not take up a new activity this month and hit your physical activity guidelines! Our ‘Why Become Active’ section has plenty of information on the health risks associated with physical inactivity, top tips on becoming more active and the types and level of intensity that you should look to try and achieve. Visit: www.activewiltshire.org.uk/whybecome-active

‘Life behind the Lens’ Tour Award-winning wildlife cameraman Doug Allan is touring the UK in November visiting The Civic Centre, Trowbridge on 12th November 2015.

You can also take our activity level quiz to see how active you are! Take 5 minutes to come and have a look and see what the site can offer for you!

Doug’s work has featured in the popular BBC documentaries, Frozen Planet, Blue Planet, Ocean Giants in addition to being profiled on BBC1’s Wildlife Cameramen at Work. After a childhood love of diving he qualified as a Marine Biologist, and started his camera career soon after following a chance meeting with Sir David Attenborough in the Antarctic. He has been filming for Attenborough and producing his own wildlife documentaries ever since, despite never having had a formal lesson in photography. He has also been awarded the Polar Medal twice by the Queen and has published his book of stills photography ‘Freeze Frame’. His talk is hugely entertaining with tales of being pawed by Polar Bears to being dragged under water by a hungry Sea Lion as well as touching on more serious topics of the decline of the landscapes in Antarctica and our oceans’ Coral Reefs, he is very passionate about conservation. He also has lovely recollections to share of his time working with Sir David Attenborough in some of the most remote places on the planet. Chippenham Christmas Launch Plans Revealed 28th-29th November Town to see biggest and best ever programme of events Warwick Davis, the actor and television presenter, best known for his sitcom ‘Life’s Too Short’ and big screen appearances in the Leprechaun, Star Wars, and Harry Potter movies, will be the special guest at this year’s Chippenham Christmas Lights Switch On, which kicks off a weekend of celebrations that will be the biggest event of its kind the town has seen. Taking place Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November and commencing at 5pm, the Lights Switch On extravaganza will be centred on a stage erected on Town Bridge. This year’s two day event features a packed programme of attractions and entertainment suitable for all the family and includes; an undercover roller disco in The Neeld Hall; bands, choirs and carol singers; a Christmas market in Market Place; land train; artificial snowstorm; and even a Santa Phone for children to put calls in to Santa. More events and attractions are already in place with additional activity being planned. With the theme of ‘A Fairy Tale Christmas’, the packed programme of events has been organised by the Chippenham Business Improvement District (BID) in association with Chippenham Town Council, as Carolyn Brownell, BID Manager explains, “As this will be the first Christmas in Chippenham under the BID we have been working hard to ensure it is a real draw for people and something that puts Chippenham on the map. There will be no need to go anywhere else and the intention is to make Christmas 2015 one to remember for both residents and town centre businesses. “At a time when many other towns and cities are struggling to be enthusiastic about Christmas, we are very excited to be in a position to really celebrate and make it something special for Chippenham.” Shops and other businesses will be to lighting up their premises with Christmas trees part funded by the BID, while promotion of the event will reach over 600,000 people, with expected numbers attending the event anticipated to increase significantly from previous years to 10,000 people. For more information on the Chippenham BID visit www.chippenhambid.co.uk or call 01225 422051

We need You! The HACCA (Healthy Active Calne Community Area) is a group made up of local people who want to provide opportunities for everyone in the community to cook, eat and play together. These days our lives can be busy and we don’t move about as much or eat as well as we should do. Some of us work a lot of hours and there are lots of opportunities for all of us to watch too much TV or spend too long playing computer games, and everyone has access to cheap and fast food that isn’t as good for us as we need. Everyone tells us we need to watch what we eat and get more exercise … but that’s not much fun! WE NEED MORE FUN … The HACCA wants to create lots of fun, cheap and easy opportunities so everyone can get active and eat well. You may have seen HACCA volunteers ‘apple bombing’ local events like the Food Festival, Skate Bowl opening, Easter Egg hunt and town carnival … letting everyone know about things they can get involved in. The group really needs more people to help plan and run more events and activities. You can be involved in any way you want and for as long or short a time as you like. If you have a few hours spare from time to time and are interested in volunteering with other local people to create fun activities for families, schools, groups and individuals then please let the HACCA know … everyone is welcome! If you want to come and meet the group please let Jane know … jane.vaughan@wiltshire.gov.uk

SPECIAL ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Tuesday 1st December, 10am to 2pm, at The Angel Hotel, 47 High Street, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, SN4 7AQ. There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre-1900 documents/books & maps, cigarette-cards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag believed to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!) We will also be holding a prior event in Portishead on Monday 30th November. If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 627110, sales@lockdales.com. For further information see our website www.lockdales.com

Afternoon tea talk with William Waldegrave at Bowood Hotel

Bowood House Christmas Extravaganza returns once again and, now in its fourth year, with an earlier scheduling as it’s to be held during the last week of November. The three-day event will play to the splendour of Robert Adam’s Orangery at Bowood House while also raising funds for the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust. Shoppers will have the chance to seek out upscale items from a wealth of gift stalls spreading out from the House Restaurant, through to the Sculpture Gallery and on into the Orangery, the surrounding Robert Adam interiors (dating back to the 1760s) and impressive collection of paintings, sculptures and tapestries will bring incomparable panache to Bowood House’s colonnaded ‘pop-up’ shopping arcade. Opening the event, Wednesday 25 November will bring a particular celebratory flourish to the Bowood House Christmas Extravaganza with carols and cocktails greeting visitors. This ticketed preview event - running from 4-8pm and priced at £15 per person - will herald a heightened sense of occasion as Carol singers perform in the private family Chapel. Christmas Coffee Morning

A Christmas Coffee Morning to raise funds for the Oldbury Wednesday Club and to contribute towards a Christmas lunch for its members is being held on Saturday 28 November from 10am until 12 noon in Cherhill Village Hall. There will be stalls selling brica-brac, homemade cakes, books, as well as items for Christmas presents, a raffle and tombola. The club provides day care services for its members mainly from Calne as well as surrounding villages including Cherhill, Yatesbury, and Lower Compton. As well as a place to meet each week, the Club’s 35 or so members can enjoy lunches, speakers, activities and outings. “Costs are increasing all the time and we have to continually raise money through weekly raffles and other activities to ensure we continue to offer quality services,” says Club Chairman Paul Bryant. “This is our major fund-raising event of the year and I’d like to thank all those people who have supported us in the past and we hope this year’s Christmas Coffee Morning will prove as popular.” Any donations of quality bric-a-brac and homemade items for the cake stall for the Christmas Coffee Morning would be greatly appreciated - please contact the Club’s Organiser, Barbara Raven on 01249 812562 if you can help.

Some of the people who ran the Bath Half Marathon in 2015 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Run for Wiltshire Air Ambulance at the Bath Half Marathon by Jill Crooks, WAA Media Coordinator

WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance (WAA) has increased the number of places for people wishing to run the Bath Half Marathon in 2016 following the success of this year’s event. Thanks to the efforts of 60 runners at the Bath Half Marathon in 2015, the charity raised a record amount £19,171.16. Runners included a group of student paramedics and former patient Dylan Jones and his family and friends. Dylan, 22, of Lechlade, Gloucestershire, was airlifted by WAA in 2012 after suffering catastrophic injuries in a road traffic collision. The charity has 75 places at the Vitality Bath Half Marathon 2016 and is now taking bookings. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, WAA’s Fundraising Manager, said: “We are absolutely thrilled by how much our fantastic runners raised by taking part in the 2015 Bath Half Marathon. The total far exceeds what has been raised for us in previous half marathons, and it’s a credit to the hard work of our runners and the

22

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2015

generosity of their friends and family who supported them. “We had a really diverse team, from seasoned runners to people who had never run this distance before. Some even struggled on despite being injured and every runner made it across the finish line. What united everyone on the team was a desire to help keep our helicopter and crew flying, and as a result they have raised enough to fund around seven potentially lifesaving missions. “We’ve increased the number of places to 75 for 2016 and we look forward to making it our biggest and most successful Bath Half Marathon yet.” A place costs £32.50 and each runner is asked to raise a minimum of £200 for the charity. Runners can join the charity’s Just Giving team page at https://www. justgiving.com/teams/WAABathHalf16Team For more information or to book a place email kenresa@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk or call WAA on 01380 739453.

What’s On

The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to present its first ever beer festival on Saturday 7th November, in good time for locals to get in the mood for the run up to Christmas. Following on from their recent involvement in the brilliantly successful Melksham Food & River Festival, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust local branch decided that a Winter Ale Festival would be a great way to have a good time, whilst raising funds for the restoration of the canal. Dave Maloney, organiser of the event, and Chair of the Melksham, Chippenham & Calne Branch, said: “We have many Real Ale enthusiasts amongst our members, and it was evident at the Food & River Festival, that local Melksham people really appreciate a good quality drink, as the K&A beer tent was very popular. This event will give people the opportunity to try an even wider variety of ales. “As it’s a winter ale festival, the beers will be slightly stronger than usual, ranging from 3.8% - 7% proof. We are hoping to have a selection of ten winter ales from independent breweries, so they should be different from those usually available in the local pubs. There will also be a few ciders and possibly a perry. Newman’s, Melksham’s independent local butcher, has kindly agreed to help us by supplying a variety of good quality sausages, which will make tasty accompaniments to the ales.” The Winter Ale Festival will be on Saturday 7th November 12:00 noon – 4:00pm at the Assembly Rooms Melksham. Tickets are £5 and, if bought in advance, will include one free drink. They can be bought in advance online at www. melkshamwaterway.org.uk and from Melksham Tourist Information Centre; they will also be available on the day on the door. Every ticket purchased will include a free commemorative glass. Westbury resident and volunteer Malcolm Hitchinson, Chair of MCC Events Committee, said: “We really appreciated the support Melksham people gave MCC at the Food and River Festival; we hope to see some of our new friends at the Winter Ale Festival and also at next year’s events, including the Food and River Festival which is planned for September 4th 2016. “All money raised will be used to help in the local restoration and promotion of the Wilts & Berks Canal. “For more information on the Trust, please visit our websites at melkshamwaterway.org.uk & wbct.org.uk”

Remembrance Day F

OLLOWING THE END of the First World War, my grandfather travelled to France and spent several months burying the dead. This experience affected him forever. The Great War started in 1914, and after four years of bitter fighting the guns of Europe finally fell silent at 11am on 11th November 1918 – six hours after the armistice was signed in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France. The following year, King George V sent out a proclamation requesting

Sunday 8th November

that a 2 minute silence be held, so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”.

include those who had fallen in WWII and other conflicts. Twelve thousand British servicemen and women have been killed or injured since 1945.

Since that first Armistice Day in 1919, a two minute silence has been observed yearly at war memorials and other public places at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and on the second Sunday of November.

In the words of the poet Robert Binyon:

After the end of the Second World War, Armistice Day became known as Remembrance Day, to

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”

by Debbie Singh-Bhatti

The major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War. Created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies progressively filled the Tower’s famous moat between 17 July and 11 November 2014. Each poppy represented a British military fatality during the war. All of the poppies that made up the installation were sold, raising millions of pounds which were shared equally amongst six service charities. Elephants Never Forget Birthdays by Emmy Butcher

O

N the 14th November Beversbrook Medical Centre will be celebrating its tenth birthday. Since moving from our Church Street premises into our lovely purpose built Beversbrook building, we have come a long way. In our short history we have had some amazing highs and some very tough lows. Over the past decade we have seen many changes in the NHS and in Primary Care in particular. Our founding Partners, Dr Bishop and Dr Sandford-Hill’s, legacy is weaved into the fabric of our building and putting the patient first is at the forefront of everything that we do. We have grown in more ways than one over the years, our patient list has doubled but also we have matured in age, learning along the way and using this knowledge to constantly improve the quality of service we provide to our patients. All this talk of growth reminds me of an article I recently read in the paper, which reported that if you were tall you had an increased risk of getting cancer. This is no problem for me at a short and hobbit-like five foot three, incidentally the average height for a female living in Britain. Not so good for our sisters in the Netherlands, who have the tallest average female height in the world, towering over us Brits at an average of five foot seven. Interestingly, the Netherlands are ranked in 2012 as one of the top ten countries for cancer rates in men and women (305 people in every 100,000). Did you know that Elephants very rarely get cancer, just one in twenty elephants die of the disease, compared with one in five humans. Recent studies carried out by various universities in the US have proven that elephants have enhanced defences against cancer. 34

The elephant’s secret is a gene called TP53 which stops cancer in its tracks. Humans have this gene too but elephants have twenty times the amount! The naked mole rat is another animal who is cancer resilient. These rodents have been referred to as sabre toothed sausages, because of their protruding teeth and completely pink skinned appearance. Mole rats live in colonies in underground tunnels, squeezing their fat naked bodies around with the help of a gooey, viscous substance called HMM-HA, which is produced in their skin. It is this substance which researchers believe prevents them from getting life threatening diseases such as cancer. The truth is, you can’t do anything about your genetics. Height is sadly not something we can influence as adults. In any case, the evidence for taller people having a greater risk of developing cancer is non-conclusive, for example the research did not take into account a range of cancer related factors such as smoking, alcohol intake and sun exposure. So what can you do if you are a tall Dutchman with no elephant genes in your past family, who, unlike the naked mole rat, prefers being

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2015

firmly clothed? Well for starters you could stop smoking, eat healthy foods and take exercise. In fact, this is good cancer preventing advice regardless of your height. Make an appointment to see your Practice Nurse, who will be able to provide lifestyle guidance and support you to live a healthier, longer, life. If you do have a family history of cancer you might like to mention it to your GP at your next consultation, so that this can be recorded in your medical notes. Your healthcare professional can also advise you on the types of screening available to detect cancer early, making it more treatable and improving prognosis. More information can be found on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk. What is important is that the research is taking place. It is so vital to keep exploring and learning more about this devastating disease so that one day we can beat it. Last month, Beversbrook Medical Centre held a Macmillan Coffee Morning and brought together patients on our carers register, our community healthcare colleagues and people from local support groups so that they could all meet, mingle and eat cake. As a bonus, they helped us raise funds for this amazing charity that does so much to support cancer patients and their families. The last ten years has been a blast and we can’t wait to see what the next ten years bring for us here at Beversbrook. A cure for cancer would be very nice, but in the meantime, we will settle for helping our patients to be more elephant like……enjoying long, healthy, happy, lives. NuReflexology

A

by Angie Jones-Moore

S FAR AS MY knowledge went, Reflexology was a treatment purely for the feet. I couldn’t have been more wrong! There is quite a variety of reflexology treatments, Maternity, Hot stone, Reproductive, Traditional and Facial reflexology and all are practiced by Gabriela Slater of NuReflexology. I was fortunate enough to experience facial reflexology combined with traditional and hot stone reflexology. Each part of the body reflected in the foot is also present in the face. I was soon to learn an awful lot more about this complementary therapy and the wealth of benefits it has to offer to each individual. After receiving a professional and warm welcome I was shown into a treatment room with a fresh yet relaxing atmosphere. Gabriela is an experienced reflexology therapist practicing in Chippenham and Hungerford, offering flexibility with her appointment times at different locations. Clients can expect a thorough, individual, in depth consultation from Gabriela who has a degree in Nutrition, and experience from a career in Harley Street. Gabriela has a lot to to offer than just a treatment for the feet!

Information is taken regarding the whole person, as opposed to one ailment or issue. Lifestyle, eating habits, medical history and overall wellbeing are recorded to create an individual client profile. Post treatment the findings will also be documented as a record of the benefits received and advice given to begin to rectify any issues found. With Gabriela’s extensive experience in nutrition, she is able to recommend diet changes, if required, to aid the overall wellbeing of the client, combined with nutritional supplement advice which may also help the client. Gabriela uses Neal’s Yard Organic & Ethical, creams, balms and essential oils whilst carrying out the treatment, hot volcanic stones are also used to give a full comprehensive all over treatment. The initial consultation, allows the time to comprise an individual treatment, to ensure the client obtains the best result possible from the treatment given. Therefore no two clients will necessarily receive the same, treatment which is tailor-made to suit each client - combining the different reflexology treatments to ensure the client receives what

they require and has maximum benefits from their appointment. A full explanation of the process is given; every part of the process described to you and discussed, before it is carried out ensuring the ultimate experience in relaxation. The more relaxed the client is the better the treatment will be received. The heavenly scent of the selected essential oil is subtle to have the desired effect of enhancing the experience with delicate music playing to focus the mind away from the hectic life styles we all lead in the modern world. Facial reflexology is a combination of gentle massage and light pressure being applied to specific points to release tension and toxins from the body. The results are positive and beneficial with your skin left feeling soft to the touch from the essential oils and overall tension released, anti ageing properties are also an added benefit. Gabriela places hot volcanic stones in specific points around the body whilst being covered with a warm soft blanket. The warmth of the stones, the scent of the natural oils and delicate massage the results of the combination are almost instant. Reflexology has many benefits and methods of application. In the fast paced world we all live in Gabriela offers an alternative way to manage our overall wellbeing. For more information about NuReflexology visit: www.nureflexology.co.uk.

Counselling – who’s it for? by Una Cavanagh MBACP

WE all at some time or another (unless we’ve been extremely fortunate) will have experienced difficulties in our lives. Relationship break-ups, job losses and bereavement can be very hard, but mostly we get by with supportive family and friends. What, though, if you are still struggling and really not managing? Perhaps you’re reading this and starting to recognise that you’re feeling overwhelmed? Maybe you’re suffering from anxiety or feeling depressed and can’t seem to move forward? The reasons why people decide to seek help through counselling are wide, varied and unique to them. Counselling is a talking therapy where you meet with a trained professional counsellor and, with their supportive help, begin the process of unpicking these difficult and confusing feelings to help put your life back on track. It’s confidential and you can talk freely without feeling judged or having to worry about how your counsellor will react. It’s a process rather than a one-off event and the number of sessions varies depending on the counsellor or organisation. 40

Sessions will usually last for 50 minutes or an hour, again depending on the counsellor.

Carers Support Tel: 0800 181 4118 - an organisation that can offer counselling as well as other means of valuable support for carers who are often the people least likely to ask for help www. carersinwiltshire.co.uk/

Private Counselling is another option. There is a cost involved but some counsellors offer concessions or a sliding scale of payment depending on your circumstances – don’t be worried about asking. One of the most widely recognised organisations that counsellors belong to in the UK is The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and they have rigorous checks and a register to ensure that their members are fully trained and are working ethically. To find a counsellor through BACP, visit their website, http://www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk/ Another way to find a local counsellor is through The Counselling Directory (it will state which organisation counsellors listed with them belong to www.counselling-directory.org.uk/

Cruse Tel: 0844 477 9400 (for bereavement support) is a national charity www.cruse.org.uk/ or if you have had a relative cared for by Dorothy House Hospice, the in-house bereavement team there offer support.

I hope this has been helpful – I, along with my counselling colleagues, really do understand that one of the hardest things in the world can be taking the first step to ask for help but when you’re ready, we’re here to listen.

Wiltshire Mind 01225 706532 is a charity that offers support across the county by way of counselling and peer support groups www.wiltshiremind.co.uk/

©Una Cavanagh MBACP is a counsellor in private practice based near Calne offering one-one counselling for adults. www.unacavanagh.com

Your GP may have ruled out underlying physical causes and then he/she may, if they feel it’s appropriate, refer you to a counsellor. Getting support through the NHS, however, may take a while and it is often limited to a fixed number of sessions and therefore you may wish to consider accessing support through other means, such as a charity or a private counsellor.

Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum

A

“The only Motor Museum in Wiltshire”

TWELL-WILSON is a small friendly motor museum situated in Calne. The majority of their exhibits are cars from the 1920s onwards, including cars on special loan. They also have a collection of motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles as well as interesting motoring memorabilia and a reconstructed 1930s style garage, complete with cars. Richard and Hasell Atwell lived in the Calne area their entire lives, starting their original collection with the purchase of a 1937 Buick Albermarle, which still remains a part of the Museum collection. A 1934 Vauxhall 14/6 and 1931 Singer Junior arrived shortly thereafter and the collection continued to grow. Supplying one of the cars for a cousin’s wedding provided the inspiration

for the creation of a Wedding Car Hire fleet in 1972. Should you be looking for a vehicle to take you to your wedding there is now a range of cars from 1929 to 1978 to choose from. For more information and details of how to arrange a viewing visit the wedding hire section of the website.

Hasell the present Charitable Company was formed in 2010.

In 1981 the collection was brought together under one roof with the completion of the smallest of the three buildings. Following the construction in 1989 of what is now the Main Hall, the Museum was forged. In 1997 a Charitable Trust was formed to take over the operation of the Museum, followed by the formulation of a support group of volunteers known affectionately as “The Friends”, new members are always welcome. After the deaths of Richard and

The contents are varied, from a number of everyday classics, to rare cars and lorries. Amongst these are a 1934 Alvis Speed 20, 1938 Daimler EL24, 1936 Rover 14hp Sports/Saloon and a 1951 Dennis Fire Engine. Richard Atwell had a strong interest in North American cars including Ford, GM, and Chrysler products which are also on display. There is a good variety of rare motorcycles, including Brough, BSA, Douglas, Indian and Velocette.

Effort has also been made to provide related data so that visitors can enjoy not only what is on display but also discover a wealth of knowledge, technical detail and in some cases, humorous, historical or little-known facts relating to the exhibits.

Prize Draw

THE JACK SPITTLE COLLECTION AT ATWELL WILSON MOTOR MUSEUM

The Friends of the Atw ell-Wilson Motor Mu seum in Calne’s Annual Draw 2015 has a prize of a 1997 Mini Cooper. Draw takes place on 5th Decem ber 2015. Call the museum 012 49 813119 for more information.

As a result of a telephone call back in January Michael Bennett and David Edwards, two Directors of Atwell Wilson Motor Museum drove to Wolverhampton to meet Mrs Beryl Spittle, whose late husband Jack had built this wonderful collection of model lorries. Beryl had decided that she would like the collection displayed together and not split up or sold.

During the summer (1 April to 31 October) the museum is open Tuesday - Sunday inclusive 11am 5pm and bank holidays. Winter opening hours (from 1 November to 31 March) are Thursday - Sunday inclusive 11am - 4pm (except Christmas Day when the museum is closed) . For more information visit the museum section of our website. There is plenty of free parking available on site. For further information contact us by telephone: 01249 813119 or email: enquiries@atwellwilson.org.uk. .

Jack was born in 1922 and started driving on the day war broke out in 1939, but did not have to take a driving test. He drove a lorry for his parents and later worked for Goodyear Tyres and Ever Ready Batteries before starting up his own business, Spittles Transport. Suffering from arthritis of the spine he was told to give up driving and retired aged 57. He then spent the next 30 years making these models and was so busy with them that he didn't have time for holidays. Jack purchased two vintage lorries and would travel to shows within a 50 mile radius of Wolverhampton proudly displaying the models laid out on the flat bed of one of these lorries. Beryl visited the Museum early in March and in mid April her good friend Val telephoned to say that Beryl was more than happy to donate the whole collection to us. On Saturday September 19th Beryl once again visited the Museum to formally hand over the collection.

Home & Garden

10 Tips for Dressing to Sell H by Nikki Seal, Real Paintbox Company

aving just put my own home on the market, I can confirm that, from my experience, dressing your home to sell is an ongoing process that you will continue to work on and tweak until you finally get that all important sale. It can be difficult at first to see your home through the eyes of a prospective buyer. Ask your estate agent to provide feedback from your viewers to gain insight into how THEY see it – you may be surprised at which areas they love and which areas could do with improving. The longer it goes on (and let’s hope it doesn’t go on for TOO long) the easier it will be for you to see areas of your home with a fresh and critical eye. As always, tackle one area, room or task at a time rather than skimming lots of jobs at once and not really making an impact. Here are some areas that could be up for review… 1. First Impressions Count Your entrance speaks volumes about what a viewer will find inside so, when selling your home, why not get off to a flying start! Paint the front door in a beautiful, smart colour

Shine up the hardware

Put a bulb in the porch light (or install one if you don’t already have one!)

Add a smart organised display of contrasting pots (arranged in 1’s or 3’s) and plant up with some dramatic and colourful plants 2. De-clutter We all have too much stuff, so really show off your home’s good points by removing the clutter and displaying each room in showhome style. Don’t try to tackle the house all at once. Take it one room at a time. Clear each space and review your accessories before carefully selecting a few items for display. Everything else can be tucked away in cupboards, or hidden in boxes / storage solutions. If your cupboards are bulging, you may have to do some serious de-cluttering first! Keep your spirits up by remembering that de-cluttering NOW will reduce the amount of stuff you have to transport on the final day of moving! Baskets make great hiding places and add texture and visual interest. Books stacked vertically serve as pedestals to show off prized pottery or other objects d’art. You can even remove the dust covers from hardbacks and group them by color, turning a busy jumble into a decorative addition to the room. Don’t stop at ‘the stuff ’. De-clutter your furniture too. Too much furniture and oversized pieces will make a space seem smaller and more cluttered. Let your home breathe by putting some space around your belongings!

50

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2015

This pruning may be painful, but it will be worth it and it’s FREE! 3. Float furniture

Furniture usually looks better when it’s got some space around it. Rather than making a room look bigger, jamming dressers and bookcases into corners can actually make a room seem smaller and cramped. Instead, centralise them on the wall and let the space breathe! Reposition sofas away from the walls and into cosy conversational groups, placing pieces so that the traffic flow in the room is obvious. In most cases, this means keeping the perimeters clear. “When you place furniture in a room, envision a figure-eight or the letter H in the middle, with clear pathways around it. Not only will this make the space more user-friendly, it will open up the room and make it seem larger. 4. Mix it up We get used to our surroundings and stop seeing our home how other people see it. Move furniture, artwork and accessories between rooms. Just because you bought that armchair for the living room it doesn’t mean it has to stay there – it might look even better somewhere else! When you move things to new spots, you appreciate them again and give your house a whole fresh look for nothing, 5. Give each space a sense of purpose Create spaces that have an obvious purpose. If you’ve got a spare room that’s not doing much (or is a dumping ground for EVERYTHING that doesn’t fit continued overleaf

Home & Garden in the rest of the house!), give it a new lease of life and a sense of purpose by making it into a gym, an art studio, a music room or a den. 6. Light the way Good lighting is essential. Especially in corners of your home that may be in the shadows. Equally lighting that is too harsh will not do your décor any favours. Position lamps in dark corners and consider having dimmers fitted where the lighting is too harsh. While you’re at it, replacing naff light switch covers is cheap to do and finishes a room off. Light shades where you can see the bulb – like coolie shades – can be unflattering too – consider changing these for something more enclosed.

As long as it’s clean, bright and tasteful. If you want to use a pop of colour to add some personality (not too much!!) consider just painting a feature wall. I would steer away from wallpaper – wallpaper choices are very personal, difficult to change and not everybody’s cup of tea. Equally, painting a piece of furniture is a great way to inject life into your de-cluttered space and you can take it with you when you move! If you’re too timid to whip out the paintbrushes, add punch with richly coloured accessories, pillows, and throws.

Often, art is hung in a high line circling the room, which can be a bit uninteresting. By mixing it up a bit, you can make the art look more interesting and keep the eye more stimulated.

time to layer in accessories for the finishing touch. When it comes to eye-pleasing accessorizing, three is the magic number -- though one and five work well, too. And rather than setting your trio of accessories out in a row, imagine a triangle and place one object at each point.

Designer tricks: Uplight a potted plant for dramatic effect. Place mirrors, silver or glass bowls near lamps to bounce light around the room and make it glow even more.

Hanging art at different levels around the room allows the eye to ‘follow’ the line of travel and maintain interest. Also, keeping art a bit lower over furniture groupings makes the picture become part of the group rather than hanging in a space of its own

Scale is important, too, so in your group of three be sure to vary items by height and width, with the largest at the back and the smallest in front. For impact, group accessories by color, shape, texture, or some other unifying element.

7. Make a splash with color

9. Accessorize with flair

Painting is the cheapest, easiest way to give your home a new look. It doesn’t have to be magnolia.

Now that you have your furniture placed, your rooms dappled with colour and your art hung, it’s

A combination of overhead, floor, table, and accent lighting creates great ambience. Having lights on different planes provides good illumination and makes the room more interesting.

8. Make your art sing

The eye naturally “reads” the room from left to right, so putting a striking object in the far right corner will automatically draw your gaze there and make the room seem bigger (this works in the garden too so planting a structural palm to the left of the flowerbed is a great starting point). 10. Bring the outdoors in Breathe some life into your beautiful home with a few plants and flower arrangements. Don’t be afraid to ‘go large’ where appropriate. That said, just a small posy arrangement placed on the toilet cistern or the bedside cabinet can work wonders to lift the space from ‘hum-drum’ to ‘very visually appealing’.

Garden Bonfires by Rachel Leverton

N

OVEMBER seems a good month to talk about bonfires. I’m not actually a huge fan of the garden bonfire; I think that generally there are better ways of disposing of garden waste. Most green waste, such as leaves or grass can be recycled. Woody waste can be shredded and either composted or used as mulch, though it may be more cost-effective to hire a shredder rather than buy one outright if your garden is small. But if wood is diseased a bonfire may be the best way to deal with it. So what are the rules regarding garden bonfires? Rather surprisingly there are no specific laws against having a bonfire, or when you can have one. There may be local by-laws though: laws made by a local authority and applicable only in a defined geographical area. Phone your council or check their website for further information. If you rent a property you’ll need to check under your tenancy agreement too, in order to find out whether bonfires are permitted.

BONFIRE SAFETY CHECK-LIST

Laws about bonfires are generally concerned with their potential nuisance value. So you can’t burn plastics, or painted household waste which may produce toxic fumes or thick smoke harmful to asthma sufferers. Also, the Highways Act states that it is an offence to light a bonfire near a road if the drifting smoke may cause a traffic hazard. Mostly though bonfires are all about common sense. The smoke and smell from a fire might annoy your neighbours, especially if it prevents them from opening their windows or hanging out their washing. It’s polite to warn your neighbours beforehand; they may have an outdoor party planned or want to spend the afternoon pottering in 58

• Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t build it too large and make sure it’s stable, so it won’t collapse outwards or to one side. • Check the bonfire for hibernating wildlife. • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire as these accelerate the flames and may cause the fire to burn out of control. • Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy — just in case • Don’t leave the fire unattended. • Keep small children and pets out of the way. • Once the fire has died down, pour water over the embers to stop them re-igniting. their garden. Light your bonfire at a time least likely to cause a nuisance – remember on a warm sunny day people are more likely

The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2015

to be out in their garden, enjoying it. Only burn dry material because damp material creates a lot of smoke.

Wagging Tails Raises over £2000* for Charity! Saturday 19th September saw a number of volunteers ‘casualties’ dramatically rescued from a lake in Cirencester by trained Newfoundlands and help dog boarding company Wagging Tails raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Lizzie Ritz picked up a bottle of bubbly as top fundraiser having raised £290.00 in donations for

The “Take the Plunge” event was organised by Hilary Coates (pictured with Bea), owner of the Swindon dog boarding franchise of Wagging Tails, in association with Newfound Friends, a group that utilises the lifesaving skills of Newfoundland trained rescue dogs to help raise money for other charities. The day saw 30 volunteer “casualties” deposited into the lake at the Cotswold Water Park before being rescued by a 14 stone Newfoundland leaping from a boat.

being a “casualty”. Hilary also received great support from local businesses such as Chiseldon House Hotel, Go Outdoors, M&S, The Body Shop, Devere Village Hotel, Pets Corner, Accessorize, Majestic Wine, Animal Prints in Silver, PetShed Ltd and Eastcott Vets who provided a number of prizes for the event. Commenting on the day, Hilary stated: ‘Seeing the Newfoundlands in action was spectacular and I thoroughly enjoyed being rescued! Everyone involved had a great day, thanks very much to Newfound Friends for such a fantastic show’. *As at the time of printing, the exact amount of money raised had not been confirmed, please check the Wagging Tails website for any further updates after mid October.

Bath Racecourse multimillion plan

B

ATH RACECOURSE is pleased to announce an exciting multimillion investment plan to develop the facilities at the Lansdown venue. The proposals have been submitted for planning approval to Bath and North East Somerset Council. If approval is granted it will ensure Bath Racecourse becomes a premier sporting, leisure and business facility. The multimillion investment will transform Bath Racecourse and includes: The construction of a new grandstand which will be located overlooking the final furlong. It will include a spacious public bar on the ground floor, viewing steps for up to 400 people and a 200 seat premier trackside restaurant with a balcony on the middle floor. The top floor will consist of an exclusive covered roof terrace offering visitors unrivalled premium viewing opportunities on racedays. The new grandstand will also offer a wonderful function space for non-raceday events including conferences, banquets and weddings;

of the best sporting hospitality facilities within the region. The upgraded suites will include the addition of balconies and feature sumptuous décor and enhanced catering options. On the ground floor there will be a large new public bar for racegoers to enjoy; Improved landscaping throughout the site and use of the outside space closest to the finishing post, created by a small movement and upgrade to the existing parade ring and winners enclosure in order to provide more racegoers with closer proximity to the sporting action; Refurbishment of the existing bar and bathrooms in the current grandstand; The addition of a new café offering visitors a wider range of delicious hot and cold food options. On non-racedays the restaurant on the middle floor of the new grandstand will be transformed into a conference suite that will be able to host up to 300 people

A rebuild of the existing hospitality stand that overlooks the finishing line with the aim of providing one 66

making it one of the largest conference spaces in Bath, with the racecourse being able to provide the added advantage of plentiful free parking for all visitors. All construction work will be carried out while maintaining Bath Racecourse’s current race programme without the need to transfer any fixtures to other racecourses. More details about the exact timeline for construction will be provided in due course once approval has been granted. It is currently proposed that works would be completed prior to the commencement of the 2016 racing season with the exception of the new grandstand which will be completed by the autumn of 2016. Bath Racecourse Executive Director Jo Hall said: “This is an exciting time for the racecourse with the investment plans ensuring it has a bright future. We are already a popular and thriving local attraction but the extensive improvements will ensure we become a premier destination for racing and a wide range of business and leisure events. I would like to thank everyone who is working on this project with us and we look forward to seeing the plans become reality in the months ahead. ”

If you prefer to read a book before seeing the film adaptation then this is your chance to discover one of next summer’s highly anticipated films. 26 year old Lou Clark still lives with her parents in the quiet market town she grew up in. Almost deserted in the winter the town’s one draw is an old castle and when we meet Lou she works in the local tea shop serving the coach loads of tourists who come to visit. With a quirky dress sense Lou never really feels as if she fits in and as a teenager longed to travel the world. However circumstances meant that she could never bring herself to leave. After losing her job she reluctantly takes a job caring for Will, a young quadriplegic man injured in a motorcycle accident several years earlier. She is told the job is just for 6 months and despite a rough start she decides to stick it out and soon an unlikely bond develops between Lou and Will. A romantic novel this also deals with the sensitive issue of disability and the descriptions of Will’s day to day life are well written with brutal honesty and little sensationalism. Things take a darker turn when Lou learns the reason why her contract is only to be for 6 months and she sets out to bring Will new experiences and remind him of the simple joys of life: not easy for a wheelchair bound man whose ideal way to pass the time before his accident was skydiving or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

As a reader you are drawn into the lives of these characters and the development of their relationship is believable. In the hands of the wrong writer this plot line could turn out to be very twee and cliché but Moyes does not fall into this trap. The resulting novel is engaging, difficult to put down and will lead you to appreciate the small wonders of life.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

............................................... Continuing with the theme of personal relationships in the face of illness comes The Fault in Our Stars the hugely successful teen novel exploring the impact of teenage cancer on the lives of two individuals. 16 year old Hazel has cancer and is, reluctantly, convinced by her parents to attend a support group for others in her situation. Amongst the other patients there is Augustus, a 17 year old boy who lost a leg to cancer. The two begin talking and agree to read each other’s favourite books. Hazel’s book is a novel by a Dutch writer about a young girl with cancer: Hazel sees many parallels to her own life here. Augustus is angry after reading the book and discovering that it doesn’t have a nicely wrapped up ending. There is no conclusion, no neat package, no ending: happy or otherwise. Of course life has an ending, but it often isn’t happy or neatly wrapped up. Hazel becomes aware of her fears about getting close to others. She is afraid that when she dies it will hurt them, and this naturally affects her relationship with Augustus. This moving novel deals with issues that most of its teen readers won’t have yet faced in their lives. As a teenager you often feel immortal. You feel as if life is stretching out ahead of you and death is the furthest from your mind. Hazel and Augustus, along with the other young people at the support group view life differently. There is no expectation that everyone will make it to the next meeting. No one is immortal. With a huge teenage following and a successful movie adaptation this novel stays with you long after the closing paragraph.

The Dance

T

he iconic image to the right of the page is “The Dance (II)” by Henri Matisse. It was painted in 1909, hangs at the Hermitage in St Petersburg, and is four metres wide. It is an example of “Fauvism” at its best. It is wild, edgy and vibrant and hugely influenced by the emergence of global primitive art, that carried a spontaneous, almost naïvely childlike quality. Theologians have a field day with this picture. For many Christians, they see this image speaking powerfully of the relationship between the Creator and creation. The dancers (although there are five of them) allude to the three persons of the Trinity that commune in perfect love-relationship with each other, so much so, that their love must overflow and be creative. God was in the beginning, before anything had been created. Isn’t it amazing that everything that continues to be created, including you and me, is an expression of God’s generous, unlimited, uncontainable, love? Each one of us is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139 v 14). Are the Dancers standing on a green hill in front of a blue sky? Or, are they hovering over green land masses and the blue sea? Either way, God is at the centre of creation. As I look around us in the marvellous Wiltshire countryside, I can’t help but admire the Creator behind the Creation. Psalm 121 reminds us, “I look up to the hills, from where does my help come? It comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” Did you hear about the group of scientists who got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God? So they picked one scientist to go and tell Him that they were done with Him. The scientist walked up to God and said, “God, we’ve decided that we no longer need you. We’re to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don't you just go on and get lost.” God listened very patiently and kindly to the man. After the scientist was done talking, God said, “Very well, how about this? Let’s say we have a man-making contest.” To which the scientist replied, “Okay, great!” But God added, “Now, we’re going to do this just like I did back in the old days with Adam.” The scientist said, “Sure, no problem" and bent down and grabbed himself a handful of dirt. God looked at him and said, “No, no, no. You go get your own dirt!”

Are these Dancers celebrating or are they menacing? Do they resemble primitive people dancing around a fire or do they represent inter-dependant relationships in deep communion. Some theologians see these dancers portraying the Church as it should be: full of joy, freedom and genuine unity. If you’ve ever seen me dad dancing you’d know what I mean! The Church is called to be a group of people who place Jesus at the centre of their lives. If the dancers do embody the Church, then there is a detail which is crucial and needs emphasising. Two of the dancers are not quite holding hands. Their hands reach out, but a gap remains to prevent the circle from being entirely closed. It is as though the gap

allows others to enter the circle and enjoy the dance too. The Church was never designed to be an exclusive club for selected members. It is an organic, vibrant, everchanging community designed to bring joy to the world. The hymn “The Lord of the Dance” by Sidney Carter is a favourite in our schools still. The words are written as though Jesus Himself were the one singing them and pictures the Christian life as a dance, with Jesus as the leader. “I danced in the morning when the world was begun…” Perhaps we see this in the Matisse painting? Or perhaps we are in the Garden after the resurrection: “They cut me down but I leapt up high. I am the life that will never, never die.” Or perhaps it inspires us to simply join in with the chorus. “Dance then wherever you may be. I am the Lord of the dance, said he, and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.” Fancy dancing too? Jo Deacon

Penny for the Guy S

UMMER only just ended, golden autumn leaves clogging up the drains, and the nights drawing in with alarming rapidity, and what little joys are in store for us? November, that's what! I love autumn in all its blazing glory. I love to kick up the bronzed and yellowing leaves as they lie in heaps in the gutter. I even love the smells of that season, from the slightly acrid scent of the fallen leaves, to the cloying mist of early morning. If we are to be denied a snowfall once again for the festive season, then the damp and misty autumn will suffice. But I hate November. I don't "do" November. I can't stand November. And why ? Because of some damn fool who failed in his attempt to "do away" with parliament many moons ago. If he'd succeeded, maybe the bangs, flashes and sudden howls of sky seeking rockets would never have happened. The bloke would've been a hero, and there would never have echoed round the streets, "Penny for the guy!" I am terrified of fireworks. It's as simple as that. One bang and the hair on the back of my neck prickles with all the survival instincts of Neanderthal man as he ran for cover from a shooting star. It's a fear I have had for as long as I can remember, and it's not linked to any traumatic experience – as I never had one connected with fireworks. I'm just plain scared. I even watched the Millennium fireworks on TV through my fingers, ducking with every bang. There's no doubt that they were absolutely splendid, but I only felt safe watching them from the usual place I hide when it thunders – under the table!

Here we go again!

I don't like balloons either. I was at a show once in a children's theatre when I was about eight. The jugglers were clever, the acrobats were great, then it all went pear shaped when a man in a clown's outfit (don't like them either) started making animals from sausage shaped balloons. I shrank back in my seat wishing I was invisible, then the clown made a dog and tried to hand it to me. All I remember is the sound of my hysterical screams ringing in my ears as I fled from the building. I was half way down the street before I stopped yelling. Needless to say, I never went back-the management wouldn't let me! When my children were small, they would watch the neighbours children happily waving sparklers around, safely held in mittened hands, then we would light our little fire while my own children held sparklers, carefully lit by Fred and I popped potatoes into the blaze to be eaten later, smothered with butter and cheese. I don't think they ever felt they had missed out on anything, as they "bobbed" for apples, ate piles of gingerbread men, and stuffed themselves on home made treacle toffee, ginger parkin and toffee apples, all washed down with milky cocoa. It was a fun evening and we all enjoyed ourselves. Back when I was a child, fireworks almost always went off ONLY on the fifth. Later, as a teenager, it became the norm that the odd firework would go off a few days before and a few days after bonfire night, but now the damned things go off at all times of the year. If someone has a birthday, the celebration of their birth HAS to be a noisy affair. The same goes for anniversaries, Christmas, New Years Eve, and just about anything.

The new kitten uses its thunder box for the first time – "O let's tell everyone by sending some rockets up!" Or, "the baby used his potty for the first time today – he missed but what the hell, lets make some noise!" It's getting so bad now that if the budgie farts it's celebrated with fireworks! The ones letting them off may be enjoying themselves, but for those of us who just don't like them, it's enough to send you to "Boots" in search of Pampers size 40! The television warns us to keep all pets indoors on bonfire night, but what do you do if you have pets who actually get frightened – UNLESS they can watch them? We had three cockatiels who screamed until they were allowed out of their cage in order to sit on the windowsill and watch them. Twittering amongst themselves, they actually enjoyed (There is nobody "normal" in this house, as I have now just provedA few years ago, I did find the courage to finally hold a sparkler – disaster! I didn't have gloves on, a spark burned the back of my hand, so I let it go with a shriek. It fell on my foot and missed my slipper, landing instead beside my heel, and it burned that too. It wasn't anything needing a swift trip to the casualty department of the local hospital, needing only a small plaster, but at least I proved my point – fireworks and I are incompatible. Now all our offspring are grown up, there is no pressure put on me to get over my fear and try going to a firework display, so I happily shake with terror, jump at each bang, and watch the television from my place of safety, so If anyone wants me – I'm here – under the table and I aint coming out until all the flash, bangs and fizzles are finished for the night ! …… Joanne Deacon @ 2015 ……
