Some folks are saying the world has gone crazy, others just frightened and scared, and some, coming into their own to help others that cannot fend for themselves, but the underlying message is we all need to be kind to each other, work together and help each other as much as we can.

ell, where to start this month..life is currently not how we know it!
Under the current circumstances, I have made the decision, to ensure the safety of my team and everyone else that we should come in contact with, for the team to work from home. It is proving challenging but the overall consensus is that the Town Crier is still 'open' and

we are available to support and provide a helping hand for all our advertisers where needs be and will be publishing for as long as possible to continue to bring you news and information. Please do not hesitate to keep in touch with us. This change of life has brought a small positive side also, aside from the good weather we are experiencing and the summer months ahead, it is a time for reflection as we will probably have a little extra time on our hands now... perhaps to look at starting a new hobby or just enjoying being out in the garden in the fresh air or potentially tackling all those jobs we never get round to doing.
as much as we can to help others. From the team and myself are so grateful for our front line nurses, doctors and everyone who are still working to ensure our safety is paramount, the lorry drivers keeping the food supply available and generally putting themselves at risk for ourselves. A heartfelt thanks. I will sign off for now and leave you with these few words.... Be Kind, Be Safe and Keep Well.

MALMESBURY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS
DONATES £25,000 TO
WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE For part of last year, the charity had to lease a helicopter after its Bell 429 aircraft was grounded for technical reasons. The cost of the lease exceeded £100,000, which was not budgeted and therefore made a major impact on its finances. Nevertheless, it still undertook its most missions since the Melksham-based WAA became a standalone air ambulance, with no direct government funding, in 2015.
According to the latest figures, last year it undertook 1,233 missions, with 920 via its rapid response cars and 313 by helicopter. More than one third, 479, were carried out at night. 23 took place in the Malmesbury area. One of these, Rick Dalgleish, 73, a former airline pilot, who lives with his wife Jean in nearby Charlton, suffered a major cardiac arrest in August and was airlifted to the BRI in Bristol where his life was saved. MLOF chairman David Hide said: “This
is the second sum of £25,000 we have donated to WAA, which carries out such important work in Wiltshire and surrounding areas, and continues to be supported entirely by voluntary donations. We are delighted to have contributed towards the additional and unexpected cost of leasing another helicopter and so enable the WAA to continue with its vital work.” Barbara Gray, Director of Income Generation and Communications for the charity, said 4
www.towncriermagazine.com
“ We are so grateful for the continued support of the Malmesbury League of Friends and their generous donation of £25,000 towards the additional costs we incurred by leasing a replacement helicopter last year. “ In our rural county, our helicopter can reach locations which are inaccessible for land ambulances, enabling our critical care team to treat seriously injured or unwell people in a timely manner. “On average, we are called to three incidents a day in our helicopter and Rapid Response Vehicles (cars). These have the same specialist medical equipment that is on board the helicopter, so when one is unable to fly, we can still provide gold standard medical care to patients.”
TIME IS RUNNING OUT I have recently joined Friends of the Down Cemetery to try and locate my Great Grandparents graves who passed away in 1935 and 1953, long before I was born. I was surprised to find out there weren’t electronic records available to locate the graves, the plans only show surnames. Through help from the Friends of the Down Cemetery and the staff at the History Centre in Chippenham I am hoping to be able to locate the graves soon.
Currently there are a number of graves overgrown with brambles as the photos below show the before and after of one of the graves we have cleared. Time is running out as the grave stones are deteriorating as the photo below shows how that information will shortly be lost forever. We are hoping to get as many people as possible to help clear the graves of brambles so we can transcribe them and compile records for future generations. Please come along and help on the second Thursday morning and/or the fourth Saturday morning of the month, all help will be very much appreciated, see pictures below of some of the work still to be completed. For further information please contact: chairman@fotdc.org or visit http://www.fotdc.org/links.html.

HOME
It takes Brits 38 seconds to judge your home The average Brit takes just 38 seconds to judge someone’s home - and they WILL notice if you have vacuumed, if your windows are dirty and if there is a ‘funny’ smell.
A quarter will buy new candles or air fresheners especially for their guest, 23 per cent will purchase flowers and three in 10 will splash out on fancy food and drink. More than one in 10 will even keep areas of the home completely off limits until their guests have arrived. A fifth will clean the windows, with seven in 10 believing good quality, clean windows are important to the overall aesthetic of a home. It also emerged six in 10 adults consider themselves to be a good judge when it comes to other’s homes. The interior of a home is likely to be judged the most (42%), however 36% will form an opinion of a home inside AND out. Of all the areas in a house, it’s the living room (33%) which most judgement is reserved for.
A study has found first impressions count with three quarters of adults admitting they always form an opinion on the dwellings of others. They’ll make a mental note if the washing-up hasn’t been done, what books are on the shelf and if the ornaments are dusty. But the research of 2,000 adults commissioned by the Independent Network powered by VEKA, found three in 10 wouldn’t tell their host what they really think of their homes. A spokesman for the Independent Network said: “Our homes are of course very personal to us and in many ways are a representation of our style. “So there is a sense when we have visitors over that we are leaving ourselves open to criticism and judgement. But people shouldn’t be apprehensive about what others may or may not think ultimately it’s the opinion of the homeowners themselves which is most important.” The study also found six in 10 consider themselves to be house proud, with half worrying what others think of their dwellings. But this hasn’t stopped a fifth from checking for dust upon visiting the home of a friend, family member or colleague. While a fifth have also ‘helped out’ by adjusting any wonky pictures or reorganising ornaments. As a result, those polled feel the pressure when having guests over with 86 per cent giving the house a ‘major’ clean before anyone arrives. And if the visit is arranged at short notice, 50 per cent will give their home a quick vacuum, while 48 per cent will quickly hide any clutter in cupboards. Six in 10 also revealed they are likely to make an extra special effort if their guest is a first-time visitor. 8
www.towncriermagazine.com
Reassuringly, the Independent Network powered by VEKA study carried out through OnePoll, also found three quarters have later changed their opinion of someone’s home. A spokesman for the Independent Network added: “Inevitably we do form opinions when we are welcomed into other people’s homes – people are naturally inquisitive. “But as the research shows, our opinions of a home change freely, so it’s never too late to impress visitors with our dwellings. However our priority should be what we think of our own homes rather than what others think – although getting inspiration from any homes you visit is no bad thing.” To get top tips on how to make a good first impression and for an interactive infographic go to https://www.inveka.co.uk/social-hub/top-tips/ room-for-improvement/ TOP 10 FIRST IMPRESSIONS IN THE HOME: 1. A study of 2,000 UK adults found the nation is labouring over tasks which may clear up dust and dirt visible on the surface, but viruses are being left untouched. More than a quarter will clean their homes with the ambition to make sure everything appears clean and tidy, with 27 per cent working to remove all evidence of dust and dirt. However, expert insight highlights how this could lead to virus-ridden homes as germs can remain on hard and soft surfaces for up to 48 hours - even after a daily dusting. Figures show adults in the UK catch between two and five colds a year on average, while children suffer up to eight bouts. In fact, minor illnesses such as coughs and colds were the most common reason for sickness absence in the UK in 2016, accounting for approximately 34 million workdays lost. Despite this, the research commissioned by Dettol, found just 17 per cent say their main objective when cleaning is to rid their house of cold and flu viruses. Instead, three in 10 confessed to only cleaning when they can see visible dirt. Dr Lisa Ackerley, the Hygiene Doctor, said: “The research has gleaned some interesting insights into the cleaning habits of the nation, and how the actions they are taking could mean they are at risk of becoming unwell this winter.
“Although it’s reassuring to see millions of Brits are in the habit of keeping their homes spick and span, it’s the way they are doing it which might mean they aren’t actually as effective at reducing risks of illness as they think because the home may look clean, but it is not hygienic or disinfected at all. "Studies have shown that flu viruses can survive on common household sites for extended periods of time, from up to 48 hours on wooden surfaces, eight hours on cloths, and 24-48 hours on nonporous surfaces. “People may be surprised to learn that it is in fact hands and hand contact surfaces that can play a very important role in the journey of the germ, and that good hand hygiene together with regular disinfection of commonly touched surfaces can help to reduce transmission of colds and flu. “Studies have also found household objects such as door handles, light switches, pens, tap and toilet handles, and television remote controls can become contaminated with viruses which are transmitted by dirty hands. “In addition, when people come home from travelling on public transport, or being with crowds, for example when shopping, then it is important to wash hands immediately upon coming into the home to prevent the transfer of viruses onto surfaces.” The study also found the average adult will clean for an hour a week, but one in six spend less than 20 minutes a week on household chores. Of this time spent cleaning, 22 minutes are dedicated to vacuuming or sweeping but just 14 minutes a week is used for wiping down kitchen surfaces with an antibacterial cloth. When it comes to the spread of viruses, only half believe this happens in the home. This compares to 73 per cent who would put it down to sneezing, and nearly two thirds who think it’s from touching contaminated surfaces in public. Just 13% of Brits polled, via OnePoll, believe their home is the place where they or their family are most likely to interact with germs and viruses, compared to 38 per cent who would expect it to be at school. And six in 10 think you’re most likely to come in contact with cold and flu viruses on public transport.

It also emerged around two fifths reckon the toilet is home to the most cold and flu viruses, compared to 33 per cent who anticipate kitchen surfaces to be the most contaminated. As a result, more than half will regularly use an anti-bacterial cleaning spray on their toilet seat, with just two in five doing the same when cleaning the kitchen table. Even fewer - one in four - will use an anti-bacterial spray on the door handles between rooms. Through the Clean It, Kill It, Stop It campaign, Dettol aims to educate the British public on how colds and flu are spread via touch where viruses may have been deposited. Pat Cattini, president of the Infection Prevention Society, added: “Influenza and the common cold can be incredibly debilitating, however it appears that aside from getting a vaccination, the UK public need to be more aware of additional 14

URGENT PLEAS to “shop local” from small businesses fearing for their futures as the Coronavirus sweeps the country have been rife. Independent firms, shops and eateries have been hit the hardest by plummeting trade and customer numbers as the panic-stricken public descends on supermarkets to stock up on weeks’ worth of groceries to see them through potential home quarantine. But while shelves at the large stores are being cleared some smaller establishments have already had to close their doors as profits dive but their premises’ high rates and rents remain. Hair & beauty salons and fitness studios were among those forced to cancel bookings and close for the foreseeable, while eateries launched delivery services in a bid to keep customers and address peoples’ fears of catching or spreading the virus through human contact or by leaving their houses.
The government has issued advice and guidance from Public Health England and The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for small businesses, employers and employees at www.gov.uk, as have charities such as the Federation of Small Businesses (www.FSB.org.uk).

This prestigious award was presented to him by the manager of Chippenham Bid, in recognition of achieving 100 per cent customer satisfaction in their mystery shopper campaign. Les has been in the hairdressing trade nearly 56 years, starting on the 1st April 1964, taking on a 3 year apprenticeship at Milsoms Gents Hairdressers, formally situated at 55 Market Place,Chippenham. After his apprenticeship, Les rented a 'chair' within the Milsoms salon and then moved on to renting a 'space' in the Hair Salon, My Fair Lady, which was situated above Fine Fayre for around 2 years. Les then decided to take the leap and rent his own premises, where Leslies Gent's Hairdressers was born and that is where Les has been ever since! On receiving the award, Les was both surprised and shocked as he no knew nothing about it! Chippenham Bid had put Les forward for the award without his knowledge and a mystery shopper visited his premises totally unbeknown to Les. 'Les said it was a total surprise but a lovely one at that' So if you would like your hair professionally cut by an award winning barber, visit Leslies Gent's Hairdresser soon! Many congratulations Les and here's to many more years of happy hairdressing to come!

Let’s look at food trends:
A while ago we were all encouraged to liquidise our vegetables and carry the green, red or purple liquid every where we go, on the bus or train, in the office and in the park as we run. What happened to the old way of sitting at the table and chewing? Then we were brainwashed into believing some ingredients are super food: avocado, beetroot, seeds and nuts and many more. Well, research proved that there is no such a thing as super food. One day eggs, butter, chocolate, cheese and wine are bad for us and not long after they are good for us. The reality is we need a wide variety of ingredients to get what our body needs to function to its best ability. As you know, I only cater and teach Lebanese food. A year ago, I came across a magazine with a cover promoting Lebanese recipes. Of course I was interested. Two points stopped me as I read through: (1) The chef was not Lebanese and maybe that is not terribly important but I wasn’t impressed as food is a main part of a culture. (2) Every single dish featured had pomegranate seeds scattered on top. Not to mention the endless list of spices and herbs used unnecessary. Now, we do use pomegranate seeds in some recipes but we certainly don’t scattered those little jewels on every dish but we do push the boat with our 7 spices mix. It just became apparent that to be appealing we have to twist things to fit with what is current and expected. Well let me tell you, we don’t. My belief is we human are in continuous progress but we have reached a stage when we are under tremendous pressure to be this and that, eat this and that, wear this and that and God help us if we say the wrong word or in the wrong tone. 22

more than profit
Following fashion is a social conditioning mechanism. We all want to belong, we want to be accepted by the people surrounding us, and we want to fit in. Is it me or do you feel the same?
So why don’t we take a deep breath and go back to buying a few fresh ingredients, cooking at home from scratch and sharing our meals. My business logo states ’Lebanese cuisine to enjoy and share’. I was so glad to see it echoed ‘good food should be a pleasure and it should be shared’ in Dr Michael Mosley words in his book The Clever Guts Diet, a book worth a read.
Valuing employees
Are you on trend?
Valuing employees more than profit, being trusted to do the job and NO gossip are among the key ingredients to a happy workplace, according to a study. A detailed examination of workplace culture explored the attitude of employed adults towards their working environment and identified what makes for a positive one. Space to be creative is especially important to those polled, as is being blessed with having time to reflect on things and having an approachable boss. A workplace which empowers all members of staff to make a difference - no matter what their role is - also helps make for a happy environment. Strong leadership and hardworking colleagues are also vital ingredients for a positive workplace.
WOMEN IN BUSINESS
The Perkbox study [https://www.perkbox.com/ uk/resources/blog/what-do-we-really-thinkof-our-workplaces] carried out through OnePoll also found seven in 10 consider their workplace to be accepting and tolerant – open to different approaches and viewpoints. Other words to describe workplace culture among those polled include ‘welcoming’ (27 %), ‘collaborative’ (24 %), ‘goals driven’ (13 %) and ‘risk conscious’ (11 %).
Saurav Chopra, co-founder and CEO at Perkbox, said: “As our research shows, we’re clearly making strides when it comes to consciousness around creating great workplace cultures in the UK. “But at Perkbox we want to make sure this is not just provisional, we want this trend to last forever. “The benefits are too many - that’s why we've inaugurated our very own
#WorkplaceCultureWeek. “Culture reveals a lot about a workplace - with different sectors having very different workplace cultures. So we’ve created a fantastic interactive video quiz to test how many people can work out what sector each person works - based entirely on a series of clues about their workplace culture.” The study also found six in 10 workers are satisfied with the levels of effort their employers put into making their working environment a positive one. And half think their employers have shaped a positive culture outside of the daily grind through regular activities away from the workplace.
Alexandra Sanpera Iglesias, head of communications at Perkbox, said: “#WorkplaceCultureWeek is a week where we all take a step back and reflect upon our culture - the highs, the lows and above all, the effort that goes into curating it, 365 days a year. “Workplace culture is hard work, it’s unique, and ever-changing but it’s the DNA of every business and therefore must be preserved - it deserves to be celebrated. “We hope to see as many businesses as possible joining in our week of celebrations. We already have a fantastic line-up of ambassadors including Beam, CV-Library, Yapster and PensionBee.” TOP 10 INGREDIENTS FOR A POSITIVE WORKPLACE CULTURE: 1. An encouraging atmosphere 2. Strong leadership 3. Somewhere that values employees as much as profit 4. Empowering all staff to make a difference no matter what their role is 5. Hard-working colleagues 6. Understanding bosses 7. Being trusting 8. Space to be creative 9. Space to be reflective 10. Lack of gossip
However, 72 % believe it’s the entire workforce’s responsibility to create a positive work culture and not just the management’s. It also emerged 70 % of employed adults actually look forward to going to work - rather than dread it. Three quarters consider their role to be rewarding and 82 % enjoy their job, while almost two thirds believe they work in a happy and supportive environment. For 77 %, this may in part be because their bosses positively encourage them to perform to a high level. Three quarters said they ‘have to work hard’ in their job - but 52 % believe the recognition they get for doing so makes all the effort worthwhile.

Rechargeable
BATTERIES Do you have a laptop and a smartphone? How about cordless power tools, or even an electric car? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you will be dependent on rechargeable batteries. I was surprised to learn that rechargeables have been around since 1859! French physicist Gaston Plante developed the lead acid cell. This had a lead anode (the positive bit), a lead dioxide cathode (the negative bit) and a sulphuric acid electrolyte (the chemical connector). The Plante battery was actually the precursor to our modern-day car batteries. Regular non-rechargeable batteries and rechargeables generate current in exactly the same way: through an electrochemical reaction involving the anode, cathode and electrolyte. In a rechargeable battery though the reaction is reversible. So, when electrical energy from an outside source is applied to the battery (i.e. it’s plugged into a charger), the negative-to-positive electron flow that occurs during battery use is reversed, and its charge is restored.
The most common rechargeable batteries on the market today are lithium-ion (Li-ion). Nickelmetal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries are also used.
Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) have been around a long time and are pretty rugged, so they are used where long service life, high discharge current and extreme temperatures are required. They allow very fast charging with minimal stress so tend to be used in power tools, medical devices, and aviation. Nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) were developed as a replacement for NiCd. They are used for medical instruments, hybrid cars and industrial applications. NiMH is also available in AA and AAA sized rechargeables for consumer use. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are being used in applications that were previously served by lead and nickel-based batteries. Li-ion batteries have a long life, hold a charge better, operate at higher voltages, and can be made smaller and lighter so they are very popular for phones and laptops etc. But Li-ion batteries are not currently available in popular standard sizes such as AAA, AA, C or D, and they're considerably more expensive. All rechargeable batteries (and the single use variety) contain metals such as cadmium, cobalt and lead that are harmful to the environmental if not disposed of properly. Hence when they reach the end of their life it’s better to keep them out of landfills because these metals can taint the surrounding air, topsoil and groundwater. Remember, even rechargeable batteries will eventually die, though it may take hundreds of charges before that happens. Make sure to dispose of them responsibly at a recycling facility. INSPIRING Generations Two thirds of 18 to 39 year-olds admit they are more inspired by their own grandparents than celebrities – and have a real interest in spending time getting to know their elders.
‘Interesting’, ‘wise’ and ‘experienced’ are among the words the younger generation use to describe older folk, according to a study. Researchers found young adults are no longer giving blanket stereotypes to older generations, and instead found 88 per cent typically respect those over the age of 65. ‘Knowledgeable’, ‘caring’ and ‘relaxed’ are also ways youngsters now refer to those older than them. The research was conducted by stairlift manufacturer Stannah, whose spokesman Patrick Stannah said: “We are delighted to see that so many young people recognise and value our older generations. “All too often older people are portrayed by stereotypes of grumpy old folks who struggle with technology and are generally behind the times, but it is heartening to see that image hasn’t taken hold with today’s 18-40 year olds. “Alongside outstanding role models such as Sir David Attenborough, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Paul McCartney, it is clear that our older generations – parents, grandparents and great grandparents – are inspiring the generations that come after them.” According to the poll of 2,000 UK adults aged 1839, and a further 2,000 over-65s, more than one in 10 over 65’s worry they’re seen as ‘boring’, while 16 per cent think they’re considered ‘past it’. One in 10 of the senior generation think they’re viewed as slow or elderly, and 14 per cent think they’re considered to be ‘out of touch’. But one in five younger folk believe the older generation are inspiring, and half think they’re knowledgeable. And 57 per cent of those under 40 would like to spend more time getting to know older folk in their community – if only they had more time.
28

While half admit they always take the time to say hello to elderly people if they see them in the street, whether they know them or not. Some of the reasons younger Brits respect the older generation include hearing their stories from the past, giving insight to what life used to be like. And a fifth love the fact that older folks can say what they want, when they want, without worrying about the consequences. However, one in three under-40s wouldn’t expect the older generation to have an interest in the lives and thoughts of those younger than them. Perhaps highlighting the divide, a fifth of over65s think younger people probably wouldn’t be interested in communicating with them either. While almost half of older citizens believe youngsters would consider them clueless when it comes to modern technology. And 14 per cent don’t think they are considered as interesting by other generations. A quarter of old folk think the younger generation would be surprised at how much the over-65s love to party. And 22 per cent report that sex actually gets better once you hit retirement age.
CARE & SUPPORT of 10 saying they’re more inspired by their own grandparents than by celebrities. Good news for grandparents. “It seems, however, the older generation is selling themselves short because they’re concerned they’re seen as boring, uninteresting, past it and not worth starting a conversation with. ‘’The older generation also feels that the younger generation underestimates how much they love to party and how enjoyable sex still is. Two thirds would also like under-40s to recognise that those approaching their winter years are stronger or more resilient than they’re often given credit for. Dr Miriam Stoppard, health and wellbeing advisor at Stannah, said: “I found the results of this survey refreshing, particularly the views and attitudes of the younger generation about the old. ‘’Many of them painted a picture of the older generation which is not at all stereotypical instead finding them fun, interesting, inspiring, knowledgeable and wise. “It was a joy to find that nearly nine out of 10 younger people respect the over-65s with six out
“Three cheers for the over 60s who have a lot of life yet to be lived.” Patrick Stannah, added: “When we think about what our older generation have lived through – from WWII, to the post war boom, to the economic crises of the 70s and punk, to social media – they have seen a pace of change unlikely to be paralleled in any other generation. “It is no wonder they have the respect of our younger generations who are eager to hear their stories.” The studies of 2,000 UK adults aged 18-39, and a further 2,000 over-65s, were conducted via OnePoll.com.

CALNE DAY CARE CENTRE
CELEBRATES ROMAS UPCOMING
100TH BIRTHDAY! Roma who attends the Calne Day Care Centre, was born on the 28th April, 1920, in a farm workers cottage located on The Pippin. Roma, like many others attended Calne School in Mill Street until the age of 14 where she remembers leaving school on the Friday and starting work on the following Monday at Harris's factory.
Wadswick Green only employs local staff, making it a convenient way for residents to remain connected with the local community and tap into knowledge around the latest events and developments happening around the area. To help support the local Corsham food shops and merchants, deliveries are made available to residents. Dairy products can be delivered directly to their front door by Corsham-based Plank’s Dairies, as well as quality meat from award winner Toby Haynes Family Butchers, and fresh fruit and vegetables from May’s Greengrocers in Corsham. Ash Lane is the newest phase of apartments on offer and comprises of 45 modern one, two and three bedroom residences with prices starting from £370,000. There are also The Pavilion one bedroom apartments, with amenities on their doorstep, available from £229,500. Interested buyers are encouraged to visit the selection of showhomes at Wadswick Green, allowing visitors the opportunity to experience the quality of the properties first hand and discover the extensive onsite amenities, including a swimming pool with Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, gym, spa and hair salon. To book an appointment and visit the showhomes, please call 01225 584 500 or visit: www.rangefordvillages.co.uk
Roma recalls shelling hard boiled eggs for their Ham and Egg pies! Roma worked 48 hours a week and earned a total of 10 shillings which she would take 1 shilling as pocket money and the rest would be given to her mother for her keep. After an 18 month period working at Harris's, Roma then went on to be a shop assistant at the local Co-op in Calne. During this time she married, meeting her husband to be at a ladies knitting class, where they were both volunteers. During the 1940's, Roma was called up to do 'war' work in Chippenham, based at Weston House, recalling 'testing things'. As Roma approaches her 100th birthday, she loves visiting the day centre and says 'I like all of it, it's the only day I go out....otherwise I wouldn't go out at all. It's lovely to come and have a nice meal and a friendly chat. Calne Community Day Centre aims to support socially isolated and lonely older people in Calne and the surrounding area to help them keep healthy and active and maintain independence. This registered charity has been running since 1980 and is operated mainly by volunteers. The Centre provides social activities, refreshments, lunch, entertainment, and outings for elderly residents who would otherwise not have these opportunities. Transport is available for members. April 20th marks the start of National Stop Snoring Week. Snoring is the distinctive sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose and throat. It is caused by turbulence which occurs due to a partial blockage that may be located anywhere from the tip of the nose to the vocal cords. During waking hours muscle tone keeps the airway in good shape. When we sleep our throat muscles relax and this decrease in tone can cause airways to narrow and vibrate. Though it can certainly feel like your partner is doing it to annoy you, no-one snores deliberately, and unfortunately it can't be cured. But it can be controlled. The key to control is to find out the cause of your particular snoring. Snoring can be related to the tongue, nose, mouth, or it can be multi-factorial. Historically it was considered to be a male problem, but it actually affects males to females in the ratio of 2:1. Women tend to under-report and fail to seek help due to embarrassment because even in the 21st century it’s considered ‘unladylike’ to snore! The risk factors for snoring are similar in women to men: being overweight, smoking, and alcohol are common factors, but women also snore more following the menopause and it’s one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Snoring is often considered a joke, but it can have a devastating effect on people. Sleep deprivation 38
www.towncriermagazine.com
(both the snorer and their partner) is physically and mentally debilitating and can lead to illness as well as relationship breakdown. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a particularly dangerous side-effect of snoring, defined as the cessation of airflow during sleep, preventing air from entering the lungs caused by an obstruction. It is considered clinically significant if a person stops breathing for more than 10 seconds each time and if occurs more than 5 times every hour. OSA only happens during sleep. When you experience an episode of apnoea during sleep your brain will automatically wake you up, usually with a very loud snore or snort, in order to breathe again. People with OSA can experience wakening episodes many times during the night and consequently feel very sleepy during the day. If you are excessively sleepy during the day and feel irritable or restless, you may be suffering from OSA. Your partner may point out that your snoring is loud, often interrupted by pauses and gasps. You might fall asleep at work, whilst driving, or during conversations. You might be forgetful and irritable and suffer with morning headaches. Not everyone who has these symptoms will have sleep apnoea but if you suffer with them a lot, you should seek advice from a medical professional. The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association (BSSAA) has a very helpful website packed with advice and useful questionnaires and information about all aspects of snoring. They even sell approved anti-snoring devices. The web address is britishsnoring.co.uk

Your freezer can be your best friend during isolation! Batch cooking has never been so prevalent amidst these times of social change and unrest. But you can also freeze hard cheese, milk and even fruit thats overripe. Fresh Veg too! So chop it up, and bag it! Grab your tupperware, pots & pans and get creative in the kitchen. Not only a good productive use of your time, but great to stock up and ensure you have a stock of healthy meals to eat. 42

A Moveable HOUMOUS
FEAST! By Sarah Davey
“Easter is early this year!” “Ooh isn’t Easter late this year?” Easter never seems to come on time! In fact, it’s a different time every year. Why is that? We don’t move Christmas or New Year’s Day so what makes Easter so flexible? This year Easter Sunday falls on April 12th. I suspect that for once it’s actually on time though frankly who knows? The reason for Easter being something of a moveable (chocolate) feast is because it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon after the spring equinox. The equinox is the instant of time during a year when the plane of Earth's equator passes through the centre of the Sun. This occurs twice annually. In the springtime this is around (but not exactly on) 20th March. Full moons occur every 29.5 days so between those two events there is quite a lot of leeway when it comes to dates, but Easter is always somewhere between March 22nd and April 25th. So now you can say with confidence that Easter is early…or late…or possibly right where it should be.
Ingredients: 5 mins prep time. 400 gram (14 oz) tin chickpeas 2 teaspoons Garlic Granules 2 tspns Smoked Paprika 1 tspn Ground Cumin juice of ½ lemon 2 tblspns olive oil 2 tblspns tahini 50 mls water Schwartz Sea Salt & Black Pepper to season
LONDON MARATHON Method: Add all the ingredients to a food
processor or blender (excluding the water). Blitz well until the mixture comes together, then slowly add the water. Pulse until smooth and creamy. Season to taste. Serve with tasty carrot, cucumber and celery veggie sticks.

Preparation time: 40 mins Cooking time: 2 and a half hours Serves: 6+
Ingredients: 3 tbsp vegetable oil 2kg beef shin or skirt, cut into bite-sized chunks 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised 2 x 400ml cans coconut milk 4 tbsp unsweetened desiccated coconut
2 kaffir lime leaves, torn 1 Beef stock cube 2 tbsp tamarind paste 1 tsp sugar Âź tsp salt
For the paste 1/2 - 3 chillies chopped (depending on taste) 6-8 baby shallots 2 inch/5cm piece ginger, chopped 3 cloves garlic
Indonesian spicy meat dish with a unique and complex taste!
Method: For the paste, place all paste ingredients into a small food processor and blitz until smooth. Heat the oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole dish or large saucepan. Fry the paste for 5-10 minutes until golden. Add the beef chunks and the lemongrass and mix well. Once the beef has coloured, add the coconut milk plus 250ml water. Bring to the boil, then lower to a very low simmer, uncovered for 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rendang sticking, and more often towards the end. 44

Towards the end of the cooking time toast the coconut in a frying pan on a low heat for 5-7 mins until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Using a blender, coarsely blend it to finer pieces – but not too fine. Put to one side. After 2 hrs, add the coconut, kaffir lime leaves, stock cube, tamarind paste, sugar and salt to the pan. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. The meat should be tender and falling apart when touched. Serve with rice and green salad.
CRISPS!
Who doesn’t love a bag of crisps?
By Tracey Anderson
They are so moreish you can never eat just one. They were reportedly invented by a chef named George Crum who created them in 1853 at Moon's Lake House near Saratoga Springs, New York. Legend has it that a customer kept sending his fried potatoes back to the kitchen, complaining that they were soggy, and not crunchy enough. Fed up with the constant griping Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as possible, fried them in hot fat, then doused them with salt. The customer loved them and "Saratoga Chips" were born! They quickly became a popular item at the lodge and throughout the whole of New England. The crisps (or chips as they are called in the US) began to be massproduced for home consumption. Originally, they were sold in barrels or tins, and quickly went stale. In the 1920s, Laura Scudder invented the airtight bag by ironing together two pieces of waxed paper, thus keeping the crisps fresh longer. Today, they are packaged in plastic or foil bags and come in a variety of flavours though ready salted and salt and vinegar remain the most popular.

Be Prepared… but don’t panic! Zombie apocalypse movies are perennially popular. Human beings love to imagine how we might survive after a global disaster. Recent flooding and the coronavirus have prompted an interest in ‘prepping’, as in ‘prepping for disaster’. Preppers have historically been cast alongside conspiracy theorists, and American survivalists, who build bunkers, live ‘off-grid’ and are scarier than any imaginary zombie. As flooding and extreme weather become ‘normal’ events in the UK, and every year seems to bring a new pandemic threat it’s easy to see why people feel helpless, and why ‘prepping’ becomes seductive. Should we prepare for imminent disaster? The answer isn’t a straightforward yes or no. In this country we are fortunate that food is plentiful. However, food is supplied on a ‘just-in-time’ basis, using predictions based on the public’s past shopping habits. If everyone shops normally, supply and demand remain balanced, but if large numbers of people suddenly panic-buy more than usual to stockpile food, shelves are stripped bare pretty quickly. It makes sense to be aware of this and to think about how we might manage if there was a temporary hiccup in our own food supply chain, perhaps because poor weather or flooding prevents us from accessing shops, or because we’re confined to our home through illness or quarantine. It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard.

By Clare Becker
I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch. A few extra tins in your weekly shop is easy for most people to achieve. Remember, in most instances you will already have food in, which can be used up first. Useful items for an emergency store cupboard: tinned meats, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, pulses and chickpeas, tinned soups and packet soups, tinned fruit, a large bag of rice, a large bag of porridge oats, cooking oil, salt, honey, long-life milk, long-life orange juice, packs of cereal, cereal and protein bars, dried fruit. If you live in an area where flooding and therefore water contamination is likely allow 2 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking and cooking. A simple emergency store cupboard can be built up over a couple of months quite easily by adding a few extras into your weekly shop. A can opener is essential. Torches, batteries, and a camping stove insure against loss of electricity, and loo roll, bleach, hand sanitiser, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters and disinfectant are useful health and medical items. If you live in a flood zone, make sure your supplies are stored high up. Use a vermin-proof storage box in the coolest place possible, and every so often move items out into your regular cupboards, and replace them, to make sure that nothing goes beyond its sell-by date. One last thing. We all have important documents filed away such as birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and house deeds. Ideally these should be stored in a fire and waterproof deed box to protect them. A little thought and preparation goes a long way. No bunker required!

The Loving and Caring Alternative to Kennels
Local pig hates mud and water!! The National Animal Welfare Trust in Great Shefford near Hungerford, is a rescue and rehoming centre that specialises in the care of elderly animals. It’s the only purpose built rescue in the country that helps elderly animals. We are a ten acre site that is home to dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, alpacas, ponies, parrots and tortoises. We are totally self-funded and receive no help from anywhere except our fundraising activities. We are flooded and on the verge of having to close the centre to the public until the water subsides!! Closing the centre to the public will have a huge impact on our income as we hold events, have a café and charity shop onsite that brings in much needed funds. The rehoming of animals does not cover the cost of vets bills, accommodation or maintenance of the 20 year old farm. Not only is this impacting our funds, all of our field animals have been put on higher ground which is not ideal for elderly animals and their joints.

We have one small pig called Barry who lives with a sheep called Bjork as she has special needs and was rejected by the other sheep and their area is now getting inaccessible. Barry must be the only pig in the country that hates water hence we have started a Just Giving campaign called ‘Barry can’t swim’. The aim of our fundraiser is to build ditches along our boundary to enable the flood water when the floods start to drain away naturally into the flood alleviation stream further down into the local village. The last time we flooded was 2014 where our fields were out of action for three months. The just giving campaign is to raise £5k to pay for the ditch work we are lucky enough to have a company giving us the traffic management whilst the work is being done free of charge when the work can start. TRINDLEDOWN FARM
ANIMALS SEEKING HOMES! TRINDLEDOWN FARM is a rescue and rehoming centre for elderly domestic and field animals. This very unique rescue centre relies solely on fundraising and donations. All our animals are thoroughly spoilt with sofas and TVs in the dog’s rooms, the cats have heated pens and our ponies, sheep and 7 alpacas roam the 10 acres of pasture land. Elderly animals make great companions for people looking to rehome a pet and can often suit those with the most sedentary of lifestyles. Our rehoming process ensures we find the right home for each animal in our care. Visiting our centre to meet our staff who are here to help you find the right pet. We then want to see you 3 more times so that you and your pet can start to bond. A home visit allows us to discuss more about life with a rescue pet and to help you prepare for the new arrival. Together we complete the paperwork so you can bring your new pet home. For more information visit our website www.nawt.org.uk or call the centre on 01488 635854
ARCHIE
Hi, I’m Archie, the African grey parrot, some describe me as a cheeky chappy. Although not too chatty I really would like someone to bond with and who will listen to my funny calls. Fancy a chat?
THE ALPACAS
Hi there, we are a group of 4 Aplacas who are seeking a new home either together or as pairs. Our names are Asif (16 yrs) Groucho (16yrs) Matilda (12yrs) and Merlo (15yrs). We have been living as a group here at Trindledown for the last couple of years. We have been used to living out in a paddock with a shelter to escape the bad weather in the winter or the flies in the summer. Alpacas are herd animals and are very social with their own species, they really don’t do very well living alone. 48

I am looking for a home as a non-ridden companion pony! I would be happy to live with any other horses, I’d be happy to be handled by any supervised young equestrians. Will you be my friend? EDDY
My name is Eddy and I’m an 8 year old Beagle x Patterdale Terrier. I am often referred to a little pocket rocket, always on the move seeking the next available cuddle. During my time at the centre I have found meeting other dogs a little frustrating so would prefer a dog free home with children older than 8 please.

DRAGO
My name is Drago and I am a 7 year old Mastiff. The last 7 years of my life have been tough, confined to either a dog crate or a cupboard under the stairs with no creature comforts. My new owner will need to be very strong as when I can see other dogs I am keen to meet them but not always in the best way. I have a buddy that I walk with, he is also a large dog and we do play rough at times leaving me feeling rather exhausted. Despite my past I am incredibly loving, a giant cuddly teddy bear with a heart of gold. Anyone who meets me instantly falls in love (they are not so keen on my drawl though). Ideally I am seeking a couple / family home where children are of a teenager age due to my size. I would prefer to live in a pet free home. Could you offer Drago the new home he has been waiting for? If so please contact the centre on 01488 635854

Hello, my name is Aloh, I’m an approximately 12 year old cuddly domestic shorthaired cat who came into the centre after I was found wandering as a stray. I love being out and about and everyone I meet is my new best friend, I love to curl up in someone’s lap. Do you share my free spirit?
JACOB
Hi there, my name is Jacob and I am a 8 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Everyone who meets me always tells me what a lovely boy I am, a big softy with a heart of gold. I love company and am always at my most content when having cuddles on the sofa. I do enjoy a nice walk out and about but I can also be a bit shy around other animals. As a result, the staff here feel I’d be happiest in a pet free home. The vets who operated on my ears said that with the amount of pain I was in before, I shouldn’t have wanted anyone near my ears, but I don’t have an aggressive bone in my body, so I was just as cuddly then as I am now.I’m a sweet, gentle boy who’s had a really hard time of it and I’m looking for a nice forever home, could yours be the home I’m looking for?
WALLY
My name is Wally and I’m a handsome, skewbald Dartmoor gelding. I’m 12hh and I’m looking for a relaxed retirement home. I am an absolute delight to deal with and well behaved. I am seeking a non-ridden companion home where I have access to a stable in the winter months. I’ve shared my field space with other horses as well as sheep and goats.
GUINEA-PIGS
PRINCESS
I am a friendly 12 year old domestic shorthaired cat looking for a new home. I’m a sweet, lovable girl who needs a quiet place to settle down. Once my paws are firmly under the table I will be your friend for life. I would definitely adult only home, I really don’t like children and I need a pet free home.
Our names are Flopsy, Mopsy and Little One, we are three female guinea pigs looking for a new home as a Trio. Despite being different ages we all get along great. All of us are very friendly, cuddly girls who enjoy being groomed and pampered. We would make great pets for younger children. We would suit a home where we can have a shed/ indoor space in the winter months. www.towncriermagazine.com

The Benefits of Laser Treatment Dr Holly Chivers BVSc MRCVS
www.georgevetgroup.co.uk George Veterinary Hospital Royal Wootton Bassett Clinic
01666 823165 01793 852458
The laser is used as an adjunct to other medical treatments. Our aim is to use a multi-modal approach to improve both your pet’s and your own quality of life without putting them through lots of invasive procedures or additional stress. Our therapeutic laser works by emitting infrared radiation at a specific frequency and wavelength which ensures it penetrates to the deeper target tissues.
It stimulates the body’s normal cells to do their job faster, to: 3 Reduce inflammation 3 Reduce swelling 3 Relieve pain 3 Improve/speed healing
The main thing to know about laser is that it is safe, non-invasive and very well tolerated. The procedure can be done during a normal consult slot, no clipping of fur is required, and the patient does not need to be sedated. There is no heat nor other sensations generated by the laser so generally the patient remains quite relaxed.
The procedure usually lasts about 20 minutes. All laser courses are tailored to the individual animal and condition but in general, for the chronic cases such as osteoarthritis, there is an induction course of six sessions over three weeks and at this point we would drop to weekly or even fortnightly treatments to maintain the benefits seen. Laser can be used on all animals and so it isn’t restricted to just dogs and cats.
A range of conditions can benefit from laser therapy 3 Osteoarthritis 3 Soft tissue sprains/strains 3 Acute traumatic injuries - bruising, swelling 3 Joint problems 3 Tendon damage 3 Haematomas 3 Gingivostomatitis (gum inflammation) 3 Otitis externa (ear infection) 3 Surgical wounds 3 Traumatic wounds 3 Anal gland abscesses The laser has a multitude of uses ranging from chronic osteoarthritis, to traumatic wounds and even ear infections. By changing the settings on the laser, we can target different tissues and therefore create different responses. With laser treatments there are no side effects. As with all treatments, some animals will respond better than others but there are no negative effects in the short or long term. There are certain areas of the body that we do not want to laser, such as the eyes, thyroid and lumps but as long as we don’t apply the laser directly to these areas, we won’t cause any damage or stimulate lumps to grow. The majority of insurance companies will cover laser therapy. We ‘ve had some fantastic success stories whilst using the laser, improving the lives of a number of our clients and their beloved pets. If you would like any further information please speak to one of our Client Care Team, or please email me: dogandcat@georgevetgroup.co.uk

he all-new second generation Peugeot 208 has been crowned European Car of the Year. Offered with both conventional petrol and diesel engines, as well as a 100% electric version (the e-208), the French supermini comfortably beat off a strong challenge from two all-electric newcomers - the Tesla Model 3 and Porsche Taycan. Other finalists included the Renault Clio, Ford Puma, Toyota Corolla and BMW 1 Series. The panel of 60 European journalists praised the 208’s powertrain range saying it providing buyers with “the power of choice”. Its bold design and technology were also singled out. Nearly 110,000 customers have ordered the new 208 since its launch in Europe in October and the electric version accounts for 15% of the mix. Peugeot now enters the “Top 3” of brands with the most awards in Car of the Year history, with six trophies.
The 208 follows the 3008 SUV in 2017, the 308 (2014), the 307 (2002), 405 (1988) and 504 (1969). This prestigious trophy joins the 12 other international awards the new 208 hasalready won.

GARDEN VIEW
CONTAINER
GROWN
FRUIT
By Rachael Leverton
A
pril is the perfect month for planting container-grown fruit trees and bushes. Even if your garden space is limited you can still grow fruit trees and bushes. You can even grow them in containers on a balcony. The trick is to read the label. Look for dwarf varieties that won’t grow too large for your pot or garden. It’s a good idea to buy self-fertile plants too, especially if you don’t live in an area where lots of people grow their own fruit. Even on a small plot buy the biggest pot you can fit into the available space. Bigger pots hold more compost, so they contain more food, more water and more space for strong root growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and cover the base with drainage material. Handy hint – if wind is a problem on your site use heavy material like broken crockery or stones to add weight, whereas if you will need to be able to move the pot easily use polystyrene chunks, which are very lightweight. Fill the container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree or shrub from its original pot, spread the roots a little and plant it in the new container to the same depth. Water the compost well initially and then whenever the surface is dry. If you want to plant your fruit tree in the garden dig a hole as deep as the root system, and about three times the width. Place the plant into the hole and refill it. Then firming the soil with your foot. If the tree is in an exposed area you might need to stake it.

www.towncriermagazine.com
Fruit is very easy to grow, and there are a huge variety of fruit trees or bushes to suit every garden size and aspect, so you’re bound to find the perfect plant for your space. Try: Dwarf apple trees, which provide interest all year round as well as fruit in the autumn. Any of the currants. Blackcurrants are particularly nice. They are low maintenance and great in jams and pies. They like a sunny spot and plenty of water Raspberries are lovely. They fruit in summer and like a sheltered sunny spot. You buy raspberry canes rather than bushes. Look for a thorn-free variety. Blueberries grow really well and are great for growing in a container because they like acid soil and in a container, this is easy to provide. Look for ericaceous compost which you should keep moist because like most soft fruits they are quite thirsty plants. Collect rainwater for the purpose as blueberries are not keen on tap water. I like to grow strawberries in large hanging baskets to make the most of the space. They are easy to grow this way but make sure you keep them well fed with a high potash fertiliser as nutrients leach away from hanging baskets very easily. I protect all my container-grown soft fruit with netting my garden birds tend to view my patio display as a rolling all-season buffet laid on especially for their benefit.
Happy gardening!

What follows is often complex, mostly impossible, but always funny. If nothing else, it will make you think about time in a completely different way.
Winnie's Dinosaur Day
- Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul By Kath Bennett
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Douglas Adams When Douglas Adams' novel was adapted for television, purists complained that the version shown bore little resemblance to the original. That may be true, but it is perfectly possible to enjoy both. The 'detective' element in the title is not entirely misleading - there is a detective story here, albeit one that doesn't follow any of the usual patterns of the genre. As might be expected, Adams interweaves humour, science fiction and a strong sense of the absurd, along with characters who are essentially believable and sympathetic, creating a novel which is much more than the sum of its parts. The plot is almost impossible to summarise. There is a horse stuck in the bathroom of a Cambridge college for a start. An Electric Monk is on the loose. And Samuel Taylor Coleridge is particularly important. Early in the story, electronics entrepreneur Gordon Way, finds himself unexpectedly murdered and refuses to accept that death is indeed the end. His employee Richard MacDuff, soon finds that the sofa stuck halfway up the staircase to his flat is the least of his problems - not least when his old university acquaintance Dirk Gently, telephones him unexpectedly as he is in the middle of breaking into his girlfriend's flat...
It is easy to see how Winnie the Witch has become such a favourite character for young readers everywhere. This is her thirteenth outing and, as always, things don't go totally to plan. Accompanied by her faithful cat Wilbur, Winnie loves to visit the museum. Not only are there buttons to press and levers to pull, there are dinosaurs! Not real ones sadly - just bones and skeletons. Winnie would love to see a real dinosaur - Wilbur is not so keen. So when the museum runs a competition to draw or model a dinosaur, Winnie is determined to win...even if she needs some magic to help. Thomas and Paul work as a perfect team to bring Winnie and Wilbur to life. The words are well judged and often understated, whilst Paul's illustrations help to draw the reader in, giving depth and detail to the tale. Winnie may not always get it right, but it is bound to work out in the end - and children will love returning to the story again and again.

I
remember from childhood learning the old nursery rhyme about Hot Cross buns.
Hot-cross buns! Hot-cross buns! One a penny, two a penny, Hot-cross buns! If you have no daughters, Give them to your sons; One a penny, two a penny, Hot-cross buns!
M
y parents sang it to me, but I also remember singing it at school. It was during the 18th century, long before it became a nursery rhyme, it was sung on Good Friday to accompany the selling of the buns on the streets. Britain’s largest supermarket chain will have sold an estimated 70 million Hot Cross buns by the end of the Easter weekend. They have nine varieties of hot cross bun, including toffee, orange and cranberry, and apple and cinnamon. Of its nine varieties, three are on sale all year round. It you do a search on the internet you will find any number of theories as to their origins. One theory is that the Hot Cross Bun goes back as far as the 12th century. According to the story, an Anglican monk baked the buns and marked them with a cross in honour of Good Friday. Another theory originates from St Albans where a 14th Century monk at St Albans, developed a recipe called an ‘Alban Bun’ and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday, starting in 1361. There was a period of time when a decree was issued forbidding the sale of hot cross buns and other spiced breads, except at burials, on Good Friday, or at Christmas. There are also stories that indicate hot cross buns were baked on Good Friday for superstitious reasons. One tells of buns baked on Good Friday and hung from the rafters of a house to ward off evil spirits over the coming year. Another mentions that sharing the bun with
66
www.towncriermagazine.com
a loved one guarantees friendship for the coming year. What we do know is that they were traditionally eaten on Good Friday, the day we remember Jesus Christ was put to death. The bun’s cross is a reminder to us of what Jesus did for all human kind - even you! What happened on the cross that first Good Friday was Jesus’ act of love which said to the world,“I love you. I have never stopped loving you. I want this relationship to continue. I will absorb all the pain and hurt so that we can have a restored relationship again.” The cross, the symbol of the worst form of human suffering, on which Jesus entered into our pain so that we might be forgiven and put right with God. Victory over all that is evil was absorbed in that one moment. However, without Easter Day Jesus’ death would have no meaning. His rising from the dead was a sign that it was not the end but the beginning of something amazing. In so many ways Jesus looked like a fool when on earth, and not least when dying on the cross. It looked like he had failed. That’s because God’s ways are largely the opposite to the values and behaviours we see in the world. God’s way turns the world’s values upside down, or I would say ‘the right way up’. The way that God intended them to be. So when you share and eat your Hot Cross buns this Easter spare a moment to think about what God has done for you in Jesus. Know that you are forgiven and loved by God your creator, who longs for us to love him too. Wishing you every blessing this Easter time.
