elcome to February edition of The Town Crier. February being the shortest month of the year with 28 days and 29 days in the Leap Year. And of course everyone knows it's coming up for Valentines Day! So heads up all you lovely dovey people. . . But did you know that 2nd February is Groundhog Day? What is the legend of groundhog day many of you may ask? Groundhog Day comes from our agricultural past and marks the halfway point to the spring equinox.

LOCAL NEWS Air Ambulance and 4 Wiltshire their 1,233 missions! House shop in Devizes 10 Julia's needs your support!

It is said that if the Groundhog sees his shadow on this day, there will be six more weeks of wintry weather; if he doesn’t, spring weather is right around the corner! However, Groundhog Day is actually rooted in astronomy. Apparently the date is connected to the movement of the Earth around the Sun. So this means is marks the approximate halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox! Keeping with the February theme, don't forget Pancake Day on Tuesday 25th. Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday is the feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent being

WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE

Wiltshire Air Ambulance aircrew by the charity’s Bell 429 helicopter and Rapid Response Vehicle. Photo: Terry Donnelly

Wiltshire Air Ambulance undertook 1,233 missions in 2019 – an increase of 12% on the previous year. It was also the most number of missions carried out in a year since the charity became a stand-alone air ambulance in 2015. Of the 1,233 missions last year, 920 were in the Rapid Response Vehicles (cars) while 313 were by helicopter. During 2019 the charity hired a back up helicopter, an MD 902, before securing its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC) enabling its Bell 429 helicopter to resume flying in November on HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) missions.

The vehicles have the same medical equipment that is onboard the helicopter so we are still able to provide gold standard medical care to patients. ”We rely on donations to provide our essential service so we’d like to thank our supporters for their generosity and our volunteers for their dedication in attending fundraising events and raising awareness of our charity.”

David Philpott, chief executive of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Despite the well documented issues with our Bell 429 helicopter during 2019, our aircrew were busier than they have ever been. “When our helicopter is unable to fly our critical care paramedics and doctors use Rapid Response Vehicles. 4

The largest number of call outs in 2019 were to cardiac emergencies - 384 - almost one in three missions, while 239 were to road traffic collisions - almost one in five missions. The team were also called to 112 falls, 104 medical collapses, 78 assaults and 66 sporting injuries, of which 27 were horse riding accidents. More than one in ten incidents 132 - involved children. More than one in three missions 479 - took place at night. The largest number of incidents that Wiltshire Air Ambulance responded to were in the Swindon area - 224. Other areas in Wiltshire where the team were called to were; Amesbury - 29; Bradford-on-Avon - 20; Calne - 39; Chippenham - 90; Corsham - 29; Cricklade - 6; Devizes - 73; Marlborough - 28; Malmesbury - 23; Melksham - 61; Mere - 4; Pewsey - 16; Royal Wootton Bassett - 17; Salisbury - 57; Tidworth - 19; Tisbury - 3; Trowbridge - 82; Warminster 57 and Westbury - 27. Wiltshire Air Ambulance were also called to incidents in neighbouring counties including Bristol, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Somerset.

This year Wiltshire Air Ambulance celebrates its 30th year of operation.

KINGSBURY GREEN ACADEMY Students make their mark on the national stage Kingsbury Green Academy has seen its first term draw to a close with two of its talented students making an impact on the national stage. Year 10 student Iona Cameron, 14, was selected to join the England Under 15 Camp for football at The National Football Centre, St George’s Park, the home of England’s 24 national teams. Iona, who came up through the Wiltshire FA Advanced Coaching Centre (ACC) and won a place at the Bristol City Regional Talent Centre, was spotted by a scout, who invited her to join the prestigious camp.

“It was great playing at such a senior level,” said Iona, who has represented the Wiltshire Schools FA and plays centre midfielder for Kingsbury Green Academy. “It’s competitive, but all the staff and other players are very friendly. We had gym sessions and I played against a boy’s team and a mixed team. It was fantastic.” Iona, who lists Manchester City captain Steph Horton and English team member Lucy Bronze among her heroes, says ideally she would like to be a professional player, but if not she hopes to follow a career of some sort in sport. Meanwhile, Year 7 student Monty Payne, 11, is settling down to his role as a young student band member in the Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End production School of Rock The Musical. Monty, who has already attained Grade 6 at piano, sings, acts, dances and plays keyboard in four performances a week. “It’s really fun, and it feels great when we hear the audience applause at the end of the show,” says Monty, who had had no professional performance coaching before being chosen for School of Rock The Musical. “At first I was nervous, but I’m not any more. I’d like to be a music producer when I’m older, I’m interested in a lot of different types of music.” Kingsbury Green Academy principal Jason Tudor said both students are to be congratulated on working hard on developing the talents they have. “Our school motto is Achieving Excellence Together, and it underpins a culture of aspiration, confidence and support at Kingsbury Green,” he said. “Our aim is that every single student will have the tools to achieve their own personal goal in the area of life they want to excel in - whether that is in science, art, music, sport, drama or whatever else. Iona and Monty, though still young, are already demonstrating that with determination and support every student can shine and be his or her best possible self. We’re all very proud of them indeed.”

Come and Explore ST MARGARET’S PREP SCHOOL St Margaret’s is a thriving independent day school for boys and girls, sharing a site with St Mary’s, Calne. Entry is from 3 years when children join Kindergarten and children move to senior school at the end of Year 6 when they are aged 11. Your child will learn in a safe, nurturing environment and spend each day in modern, stimulating and purpose-built teaching spaces. 30 acres of campus and offsite facilities mean there’s space to explore, learn, play, let off steam, relax, think and grow. Teaching throughout the school is tailored to meet the needs of the individual child. Children are encouraged to reflect and evaluate their own learning and with support identify their next steps. Specialist teachers offer a wide range of experiences and as a result, our teaching delivers truly personalised learning for each child. An extensive range of technology enhances learning across the curriculum. Children are thoroughly prepared for entrance examinations to senior schools and St Margaret’s has an impressive record of success in academic and specialist subject scholarships, as well as consistently gaining entry to first-choice schools.

Of course you want your child to be happy, alongside giving them the best possible start in life. They will join a school with real spirit and energy, which lives each day to the full. SPENDING a PENNY!

The history of the public loo. We take public toilets for granted today yet for the majority of British history they didn't exist! The first public flushing toilet was invented and created by a plumber named George Jennings, and showcased at the Great Exhibition in 1851. People were enthralled by this amazing contraption and it proved so popular that the first public loos, called 'Public Waiting Rooms' were opened the following year. There was a huge public desire for better sanitation to prevent the spread of diseases like cholera. In Victorian Britain, the first public toilets were designed for men only. Noone gave much thought to women. For the most part women were considered to be their husband's property, and their place was in the home. Although many working-class women did work outside the home, most middle-class women did not, and neither were they expected to travel much. If they did want or need to travel, women from polite society had to plan their route carefully to include areas where they could relieve themselves. This meant that for the most part women travelled only to see family and friends, within the distance their bladders allowed. The fledgling feminist movement felt keenly that a lack of access to toilets was a barrier to women accessing public spaces. This led to the formation of the Ladies Sanitary Association, which campaigned from

By Tracey Anderson

the 1850s onwards, fairly successfully, and succeeded in getting more public toilets built for females, though the numbers fell far short of those required. Other campaigns for more female toilets were opposed vehemently by men, who either did not want the facilities located in the same place as their own toilets or didn't want them anywhere where they might be visible to men. Society was coyer in the 19th Century and bodily functions, particularly female bodily functions were considered taboo. There were even cases of female public toilets being sabotaged by men! The First World War saw women entering the work force in huge numbers for the first time, as they entered munition factories to help with the war effort. These factories were traditionally dominated by males so had very little in the way of female facilities. But now women had the numbers to begin to campaign for female changing rooms and toilets. Many employers resisted though and there was nothing in law at the time to force their hand because there were only limited protections for workers of either sex. It actually took until 1992 before legislation was passed to dictate that men and women in a workplace must have separate toilet facilities where possible: "Employers should arrange for separate facilities for men and women. If this isn’t possible, toilets and washing facilities must have locks. These ensure privacy and security. (The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)) So next time you spend a penny at the train station or shopping centre, spare a thought for your poor ancestors whose only options were to cross their legs and think dry thoughts!

YORKSHIRE PUDDING DAY FEBRUARY 2ND

175 gram (6 ounces) butter (room temp) 75 gram (3 ounces) caster sugar 175 gram (6 ounces) plain sifted flour 75 gram (3 ounces) fine semolina 1 teasponn Cinnamon Powder Prep 10 mins Cook time 55 mins. Pre-heat oven to 150°C, 300°F, Gas Mark 2.

The first Sunday in February has been designated Yorkshire Pudding Day. 'Dripping puddings' were made in Yorkshire as early as 1737. The recipe was published in a book called 'The Whole Duty of a Woman' which declared you should use a '...good batter as for pancakes, put in a hot toss pan over the fire, add a bit of butter to fry the bottom a little, then put the pan instead of a dripping pan and under a shoulder of mutton, shake it frequently and it will be light and savoury. When the mutton is done, turn it in a dish and serve hot.'

In a bowl cream together the butter and sugar. Gradually mix in the flour, semolina and Cinnamon. Using your hands knead the mixture together to form a dough. Line a baking tray with grease proof paper, place your dough into the baking tray and distribute evenly, press into the corners. Prick the dough all-over with a fork. Bake in the middle of the oven for 50-55 minutes.

Peppered Strawberries with Orange 900 gram Strawberries 2 large oranges Ground black pepper Caster sugar to tase Place hulled strawberries in a large bowl. Grate the rind and squeeze the juice from the oranges over the strawberries, reserving a little rind for garnish. Sprinkle the strawberries sparingly with the ground black pepper. Add sprinkles of caster sugar to taste. Stir carefully so that the ingredients are well mixed. Garnish with remaining orange rind and chill before serving. Courtesy of Scwartz - for more recipes go to: www.Schwartz.co.uk

Ten years later the recipe appeared again in a book by Hannah Glasse, the Prue Leith of her day. The puddings took a while to evolve from flatter, spongier offerings of the time, to the light crispy specimens we know today. The Royal Society of Chemistry once declared that “A Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it is less than four inches tall.” Yorkshire Puddings are a staple of the British Sunday lunch (though my kids happily eat them midweek too). Mostly they are served as part of the trimmings, but in some parts of Yorkshire they are eaten as a separate course prior to the main meat dish. Originally this was for reasons of frugality; the puddings were served with dripping and gravy as a way of filling the diners with less expensive ingredients and thus making the more expensive meat go further. However you eat yours, Happy Yorkshire Pudding Day. www.towncriermagazine.com

For the first time this January saw a ‘Veganuary’ menu with dishes such as carrot and herb pakora with a mango salad to start, a Cumin Roast Cauliflower and Cannellini bean pure with fennel and lemon salad and dukkha for main and to finish off with dessert an oat milk and vanilla rice pudding with a fruit compote- a menu that went down fantastically. The Greenhouse offer a Classic Vegan Burger all year round. The next big occasion is Valentine’s Day where the Greenhouse will be offering a romantic candlelit dinner- booking will be essential.

Arthritis ...

Is your dog suffering in silence? Iain D. Hunt BVMS MRCVS The George Veterinary Hospital 01666 823165 Royal Wootton Bassett Clinic 01793 852458

During the colder, damper seasons the number of dogs we see with painful joints increases. Arthritis is inflammation of a joint (or joints) characterized by pain and stiffness of the affected area. In a healthy joint, the articular surfaces are lined with a beautifully smooth and protective cartilage, with lubrication provided by a small volume of honey-coloured, viscous fluid called synovial fluid. When a joint becomes arthritic,

the cartilage becomes thin and damaged. Consequently, the underlying bone becomes exposed - these exposed bone surfaces rub together causing inflammation and pain. Dogs are often more stoical than humans and may not make it immediately apparent to us that they are in pain. Many dogs present with vague symptoms that, after taking a careful history from the owner, may be suggestive of joint pain. Some may report a gradual change in their dog’s behaviour, ranging from a reluctance to exercise and stiffness after resting, struggling with stairs and getting into and out of the car, to becoming grumpy and spending less time interacting. Unfortunately, many owners put these changes down to “old age” and accept them as part of the ageing process. In almost all cases arthritis is worse in animals that are overweight and unfit.

One of the primary goals in the management of osteoarthritis must be aimed at keeping the joint in use and minimising discomfort. Without doubt, one of the most important therapies for patients with osteoarthritis is the combination of weight control and exercise management. The weight clinics run by our veterinary nurses are a great way to assist this. For those dogs who need a little more help, thankfully there are many options available. The most used treatment comes in the form of “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs” or NSAIDs. There are many licensed NSAIDs available and these are very effective at controlling pain and inflammation. For those dogs who don’t tolerate NSAIDs (e.g. those with a very sensitive intestinal tract) or indeed those needing additional pain relief, we often prescribe medications that, although not specifically licensed for use in dogs, may be used off-licence through the “veterinary cascade system”. These medications are generally tolerated very well with few side effects and can be used in combination with NSAIDs. Diagnosing patients with osteoarthritis is relatively simple and is achieved by a thorough examination of the affected joints and radiography. With an estimated 1.2 million dogs suffering with osteoarthritis in the UK, it is essential that we are aware of this debilitating condition and able to recognise the often-subtle signs. Our canine companions deserve the best care we can give them! 24

HEALTH & BEAUTY

WHY CORE EXERCISES ARE IMPORTANT

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CORE STRENGTH?

We know that getting fit is important for a healthy life. Often, we equate fitness with running, cycling, walking or some other form of exercise. But there's one aspect of fitness that is almost always overlooked; our core muscles. Whenever I talk about building muscle everyone pictures someone at a weight bench pumping iron until their biceps bulge out of their shirts. But strengthening and toning your muscles can be much more subtle. And even a small amount of work on your core strength can dramatically improve your overall fitness and well-being.

WHAT ARE YOUR CORE MUSCLES?

Building a strong core provides a firm and flexible support for every activity your body performs. The stability provided gives you better balance and better posture which in turn helps prevent falls and injuries in your day-to-day life. The support from your core muscles takes the strain away from your skeleton and helps hold it in place alleviating some forms of back pain, stiffness and soreness when you move your body. Any time you move whether it's for exercise or doing the housework or gardening, a strong core will help you perform better and reduce muscle fatigue in the other parts of your body by giving them a firm base to attach to.

Right to THE CORE

Your core muscles form a ring around the middle of your body. Most people think of the six pack muscles in the abdomen, but the core includes a range of muscles in your sides and back as well. Their job is to keep the top and bottom halves of your body connected together whilst allowing them to move independently. They form a strong foundation that the majority of your other muscles depend upon when you move your body.

WHEN DO I USE MY CORE MUSCLES?

Practically every movement you make and every position you put your body into involves your core muscles. They are really important. Bending over to pick something up, twisting to look behind you and sitting up in bed are more obvious moments your core is activated. But running, walking, sitting in a chair and even standing still all rely on core strength. Without it the top half of your body would simply flop over.

By Robert Grant

HOW CAN I BUILD MY CORE STRENGTH?

One of the best things about core strength is that you don't need a gym or expensive equipment to improve it. There are lots of exercises you can do at home. Make sure you seek medical advice before attempting any new exercise regime. Most people think of sit ups as the prime core exercise. I advise people not to do sit ups as they are not particularly effective and the continual flexing of the base of your spine can lead to lower back injuries. My top tips are planks, leg raises and mountain climbers. If you're not sure what these are have a chat with your local personal trainer or gym instructor, or search on YouTube for easy-to-follow tutorials. Take your core strength seriously and it will improve every aspect of your fitness as well as provide the central support essential for your body. 27

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Should you use mouthwash this Valentine's Day? No one wants to kiss someone with poor oral hygiene and bad breath. So, what can you do to make sure your mouth is kissable on February 14th? Gum disease begins with plaque. This is a film of very sticky bacteria on the teeth which, if not removed, causes gum disease. Because it is so sticky plaque can only be removed from teeth with a brush or dental floss. Mouthwash can never replace good brushing. In 2014 a study in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry found antiseptic mouthwash

Many mouth washes contain alcohol, which has been linked to oral cancers in some studies. Alcohol can exacerbate bad breath because of its drying properties, and because it is quite harsh it may also cause stinging. Most dentists and hygienists agree that if you use mouthwash it should be alcohol-free. Finally, most of us don't hold mouthwash in our mouths long enough for it to work. The optimal time is 30-60 seconds. As part of a good dental hygiene routine mouthwashes are helpful but they will never replace the mechanical action of a toothbrush and floss for getting teeth and gums really clean.

used twice a day reduced the buildup of plaque and gum disease over a six-month period. Mouthwash makes teeth 'more slippy' so the sticky plaque finds it difficult to adhere, which in turn means your mouth feels fresher for longer. Bad breath (halitosis) is caused when excess bacteria emit excess gas. Pockets of bacteria can lurk around fillings, ill-fitting crowns and impacted wisdom teeth. Halitosis requires treatment from a dentist or hygienist, but a mouthwash can help. Use one with ingredients such as chlorine dioxide, which kills the volatile sulphur compounds that cause foul odour. 30

Royal Wootton Bassett

by Ben Johnson

On 12 March 2011, the market town of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, South West England, was granted a royal title by Queen Elizabeth II, thereby holding the unique distinction of being the only England town to be bestowed with this royal favour since 1909. Indeed, it is one of only three towns to actually carry the designation, the other two being Royal Leamington Spa and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Situated 6 miles from the busy commuter town of Swindon, Wootton Bassett is first mentioned in a 681 AD charter as being in the possession of the Abbot of nearby Malmesbury Abbey. Wootton Bassett was then known as Wodeton or ‘settlement in the wood’ in reference to neighbouring Bradon Forest. Malmesbury and surrounding areas such as Wodeton rose to particular prominence when King Æthelstan (924-939 AD) based his court there. Indeed, whilst London was the country’s commercial centre, Malmesbury became the religious and academic centre of learning in England at the time. With little in the way of conflict or drama for nearly 100 years, Wodeton found itself under siege in 1015 when the Danish Vikings violently conquered much of the British Isles. Or as Wulfstan II, the Archbishop of

York cheerfully put it; the Vikings became “God’s judgement on England”! Those who survived the onslaught made the wise decision to move the settlement further uphill, where the town’s High Street remains today. In the wake of the 1066 Norman Conquest, the town was recorded in William I’s famous survey of 1086, the Domesday Book, (the ‘book of judgement’ for English and Welsh taxpayers at the time). Wootton Bassett was said to belong to the prominent Norman landowner Miles Crispin and was worth the princely sum of nine pounds.

A rotten borough! Despite its modest size, Wootton Bassett was granted borough status by Henry VI in the mid-15th century. By 1831, there were around 1,500 people living in 349 dwellings in the town, which meant the electorate was small enough (and very willing!) to be bribed for votes by prominent local landowners who could then gain an unfair advantage within the House of Commons. Since the town boasted no major industry or trade links at the time and had high levels of unemployment, this very undemocratic voting system was a popular side-line and vast sums of money (and beer!) changed hands. In the wake of the Reform Act 1832, Wootton Bassett and other ‘Rotten Boroughs’ as they were known, had its borough constituency abolished and became part of the nearby Cricklade constituency. www.towncriermagazine.com

...continued

Royal recognition

Having always been a modest market town with a focus on farming and agriculture, the population of Wotton Bassett tripled in size between the 1960s and 2001 with the construction of the M4 motorway linking London to South Wales. This made the town an attractive proposition to those commuting to the capital, Swindon, Bath and Bristol. The town was also popular with the Royal Air Force following the establishment of the nearby RAF Lyneham base in 1940, which went on to become the RAF’s principal transfer point when it became home to the military transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules, in 1971.

In early 2007, maintenance at the RAF Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire meant that the bodies of British Armed Forces servicemen and women who had lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan were returned home to RAF Lyneham. The drive from the base to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where the bodies were received by their families, took the cortege along Wootton Basset High Street.

...continued The RAF had previously made a decision to close RAF Lyneham in 2012, once all C-130 Hercules had been decommissioned. Flying operations ceased in July 2011, with the transfer of fallen soldiers returning to RAF Brize Norton in September 2011. Wootton Bassett had already received recognition for its support of the military, including The Sun newspaper’s Military Award or “Millie” as it is affectionately known, which was presented by Prince William in 2009. And even though the townspeople were reluctant to accept any praise for something they felt was a duty and an honour, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, announced in March 2011 that “Her Majesty has agreed to confer the title ‘Royal’ upon the town, as an enduring symbol of the nation’s admiration and gratitude”. Wootton Bassett officially became Royal when the Queen’s daughter Princess Anne brought the letters patent – a written order from the Queen – to the town’s council on 16 October 2011.

Join the new virtual quality improvement panel at Dorothy House and help shape the future of services for people living with a life-limiting illness. Dorothy House Hospice Care is looking for people who have used their services to join a new virtual quality improvement panel, to help develop the care and support services they provide for patients living with life-limiting illness, their families and carers. Dorothy House provides care and support for people in their own home, in the community, and through day services and residential care provided at the Hospice. They work across Bath & North East Somerset, parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Voluntary panel members will be able to share their views from the comfort of their own home by completing one or two online surveys and possibly a telephone interview each year. Volunteers don’t need any qualifications, just personal experience of using any one of the services provided by Dorothy House. Working through Evolving Communities, a Wiltshire-based community interest research company, Dorothy House is inviting people to get involved now to help inform priorities in 2021. Evolving Communities wants to hear from people who would like to join the panel and they will be gathering views from January to March 2020. Dr Sara Nelson, Head of Research and Insight at Evolving Communities, said: “Every year Dorothy House produces a quality improvement plan setting out its development priorities for the year ahead. They understand the value of listening to the people who use their services and

they are now seeking views to inform their priorities for 2021. Previous priorities have included, for example, improving gym facilities and developing an online patient feedback system.

“Evolving Communities is setting up a virtual quality improvement panel for Dorothy House to make it easier for people to share their views from the comfort of their own home. We want to hear from people who are currently using Dorothy House services and those who have used them previously, including patients, family members and carers. This is a great opportunity to help Dorothy House improve the quality of life for those living with a life-limiting illness.” If you can spare a little time to get involved, please contact Evolving Communities to find out more.

Britain’s Got Talent WINNER set to stun on 2020 nationwide tour

Calne Bowls Club Open Days

ichard Jones was the winner of Britain’s Got Talent and is a British Army soldier as well as one of the world’s greatest magicians in The Magic Circle.

Having had audiences on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions completely captivated, Richard is extending his sell-out tour of the UK earlier this year – and will be performing at The Neeld Community and Arts Centre, Chippenham on March 3rd. The mesmerising Lance Corporal will show exactly what made him the stand out act to win Britain’s top talent show in 2016… And still the only magician to have won the ratingssmashing series. Followed by their emotional gasps, much of the audience on the recent Champions show were reduced to tears when Richard paid tribute to his veteran mentor, Fergus Anckorn – a fellow magician who died last year before his 100th birthday. Now, on his extended tour of Escape, Richard endeavours to break the boundaries of the mind with his ‘magic with meaning’, debuting a further twist on some of his newest, aweinspiring magic. In heart-warming memory of Fergus, he will be recreating some of his dear friend’s most incredible tricks too - some of which the legendary soldier only ever taught Richard himself.

And let’s not forget what Simon Cowell said… “ You Sir - are a wizard. That has to be magic.” Tickets are now on sale for The Neeld Community and Arts Centre, Chippenham on March 3rd 2020. http://www.richardjonesmagic.co.uk/ tour-dates/ For more details on press for Richard’s tour contact sallywindsor@bigtalentgroup.co.uk or individual venues for tickets. 48 www.towncriermagazine.com

GARDEN VIEW GARDEN

A GAME OF TWO HALVES

VIEW

50

For me February is where the gardening year begins...twice! First - Reaping last year’s rewards: If you were industrious in the autumn, you could now be benefiting from a lovely display of snowdrops (Gallanthus) and Irises.

ahead last year. But don’t panic; the beauty of gardening is that the seasons keep rolling round so make sure you use February to ensure your summer display is top notch. February is definitely the month to start sowing seeds. Fill pots or seed trays with seed compost then firm and level the surface. Sprinkle seeds on to the surface of the compost then cover with a layer of fine grit. Water well with a fine spray. Cover with clear plastic (a polythene bag will do nicely) and remove it once the seeds germinate. Learn from my mistake one year and don’t forget to label the pots! Potting up summer bulbs is generally left until late spring, but I always pot up one or two pots in February. It allows them to get established and provides a nice early display for my patio.

My favourite snowdrops are G ‘Atkinsii’, which are tall with long, graceful flowers and G. nivalis ‘Viridapicis’ with sweet, green tipped flowers. It’s said they’re best planted ‘in the green’ in Spring but I’ve had lots of success with packaged bulbs planted in the autumn so they’re definitely worth trying. As for irises, the deep blue Iris ‘Joyce’ is hard to beat especially on my poor, free draining soil. I planted a witch hazel as soon as we moved into our present house; Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’. I can’t live without fragrance in my garden and at this bare, drab time of year the wonderfully scented paleyellow flowers lift my spirits. I discovered we’d inherited an evergreen Clematis (C. armandii). I’d never grown it before but it’s worth seeking out. It needs a warm wall or fence and well-drained soil then rewards you by being frosthardy and producing lovely creamy, scented flowers at this time of year. Second - Planning this year’s display Perhaps you didn’t manage to plan

FLOWERS

The Language of 'There's rosemary, that's for remembrance . and there is pansies. That's for thoughts . .' Ophelia's speech from Shakespeare's Hamlet is recognised by most people and this excerpt clearly defines the meaning behind certain plants. However, the speech continues and the allusions created by the writer are largely lost to the modern reader. An Elizabethan audience would have readily understood all the hidden meanings and their intimations, as the language of flowers was a common method of sending messages in those days. Victorians took the graceful symbolism embodied by specific flowers to new levels and sent coded messages to each other under the watchful eyes of strict parents and social rules. Rigorous Victorian propriety meant sweethearts needed to send secret and subtle messages to one another.

A sprig of mimosa passed surreptitiously to someone would let them know they had a secret admirer. The the full scale of these veiled communiques could begin. The gentleman may have sent his favoured lady a posy of white camellias, purple lilac, mountain ash, ferns and sweet William, which translate (in order) as

'you are perfectly lovely, I am falling in love. You are safe with me, I am sincere and discreet. Please grant me just one smile!' The recipient could immediately indicate her response by either putting the flowers to her lips, implying yes, or more devastatingly for the man, she may pull a petal off a flower and drop it, meaning no!. Alternatively, she could respond with a bouquet expressing her feelings with carefully chosen blooms, Jonquils, rose leaves and honeysuckle translate as 'I return your love. Keep your hopes alive but I will take time to answer' Perhaps she had reservations so instead sent lavender and pink larkspur; 'I don't trust you as I think you may be fickle'. Nowadays the only floral messages we readily recognise are the red roses dutifully sent to declare our love and the Remembrance Day red poppies. As well as being a symbol of remembrance the poppy is also a symbol for sleep. Red poppies flourish on the churned up battlefields of Europe after the Napoleonic and First World Wars so are very poignant as a tribute to fallen soldiers. Regardless of the language of the flowers you decide on as a fit for someone, the fact you take the time to carefully select a beautifully constructed bouquet from a good florist speaks volumes to the recipient. Giving flowers is such a personal and touching gestue that it makes sense to go out of your way to choose something really special. Imagine the message you are sending if you just grab a random bunch of wilting flowers from the nearest garage forecourt at the last minute.

By Kath Bennet

Knowledge of Angels – Jill Paton Walsh Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought-provoking novels for adults, and ‘Knowledge of Angels’ is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the fifteenth century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of fiction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by local fishermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress. At the heart of the book lie a number of questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Both of their stories are also about love, and self-knowledge, and what is and is not possible. Yet the book is written in such a way, that these weighty questions are explored at the same time as creating a page-turning 62

www.towncriermagazine.com

thoroughly engrossing story, in which the reader is drawn in turn into the lives of Amara and Palinor. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time.

Stormbreaker – Anthony Horowitz The first novel in Horowitz’s phenomenally successful Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, adventure and James Bond style one liners. Alex Rider is a seemingly ordinary 14-yearold boy. However, when his uncle is killed in a car accident, his world begins to unravel. An orphan, Alex finds that without the protection of his guardian he is in the hands of his uncle’s employers – and they are not a bank, but MI6! Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action sequence to action sequence, with a liberal amount of humour and contemporary references along the way. The structure is familiar to Bond fans, and once you have suspended your disbelief at the idea of a teenage spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. In particular, the gadgets Alex uses and the villainous Herod Sayle will appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly sinister character of Yassen Gregorovitch is introduced here, ready to be developed further through the rest of the series. Ideal for fans of ripping yarns and reluctant readers alike, you will find that one chapter is never enough, as Horowitz is the master of the cliff-hanger ending. A 12-year-old of my acquaintance told me recently that this book is ‘even better than the film’ – if you know any 12-year-olds, then you will know that I need not say any more than that!
